Another Moment of your Time  by Larner 18 Review(s)
Galadriel GardnerReviewed Chapter: 1 on 1/26/2023
Yes, the time for truth indeed, and past it for some of these thick-headed ones. That’s how it is, though. Every generation, among Hobbits or humans, has its hangers-on that are resistant to a way of seeing things different from what they’ve always known.

I love the weaving of gentle humor throughout this serious story. The mushroom story had me laughing, as did Merry and Pippin’s banter. Apparently the Thain hasn’t outgrown the sheer cheek to take something without permission, but what a good decision it was! Writing all over it… well, he’s very good, so I’m sure Sam didn’t mind in the end! Now I must go and read the full text of this song!

Author Reply: Oh, but I missed this comment, and I apologize! I suspect that Pippin never gave over his love of mischief, and this time he was right--in his way.

Thanks so!

Looking for a bit of comfort today, I re-read this. And it brought me to tears, but in a good way.

Thank you again for this lovely treat.

(((hugs)))

Author Reply: And thanks so for being there for me so many times. Another comment I managed to miss.

Sam needed to set things straight many times, I'm certain; and Pippin would be the first to stand behind him at such moments. Thanks so much, and happy birthday!

I've just read through this entire series again, backwards, and it's been lovely remembering all the old ones again. Thank you, once more, for sharing your tellings with us.

Author Reply: I am so honored, Freyalyn! Love finding reasons to imagine Frodo Baggins learning more about himself as well as about his friends and the world they lived in.

As is so aptly said, a prophet may be honored in other places, but never in his own country...but that was always the charm of the hobbits, to be so innocent of (or to ignore) everything that went on outside their own peaceful borders.

But I am glad that Frodo's closest friends stood up for him the way they did. This promises to be a beautiful story and I've only just discovered it. I'm going to read it slowly and relish everything...I promise myself I won't try to gobble it up all in one go. Thank you for sharing it to us readers.

Author Reply: I hope that by now you've discovered that this is a collection of short stories. I do have a few novels, there further down the list, of course; but I admit I do tend to write mostly short stories, as I think most of us do.

We know from the final chapter of RotK that Sam grieved to know that although the people of the Shire respected Merry and Pippin (and himself, which he didn't realize at the time), most had no idea just how important Frodo's actions had been for their safety and the return of their comfort once the Scouring of the Shire was finished. I doubt most Hobbits appreciated just what the Mayor did for the Shire, seeing only that he presided at banquets. We know, however, that he oversaw the duties of the traditionally twelve Shirriffs, and it's likely that he also saw to the registration and archiving of the various contracts, wills, birth, death, and marriage certificates there might be beyond those records kept in the family books such as the Tooks' Old Yellowskin, and that he helped protect the integrity of the Shire's legal system and customs.

I cannot believe that Pippin and Merry's families could remain completely ignorant of all of what Frodo did both within and without the Shire, but I doubt most Hobbits knew or even much cared, and particularly at the time, just how important it was that Frodo served as the Ringbearer and later the deputy Mayor for the Shire. So, such incidents as this were most likely inevitable.

Thanks so much for your comments--they are very much appreciated.

Just to skip the awkwardness that generally follows disappearing for a really long time and then showing up again, I have to say that I'm so happy you're still writing. Every now and then, for the last couple of years, I've peeked back at this site and always look for your stories and read at least one, either an old favorite or a new one. This was wonderful and engaging as always, touching and sweet as well. I was grinning and chuckling over Merry and Pippin's banter and the story of the dried mushrooms...how dare Boromir do such a horrible thing! :D And loved Frodo's defense of his namesake.

This pancake recipe sounds lovely! I'll have to borrow my fiance's skillet the next time I visit and try them...above his protests, I'm sure. ;)

Author Reply: You can't imagine how pleased I am to hear from you! Engaged, are you? Wonderful!

The song for this ends my original "Moments in Time" collection, by the way, in case you wish to see that.

Yes, they are all together, and Sam is frustrated that his beloved Master isn't getting the respect he deserves, and writes out the truth of what Frodo had been through--and good old Pippin makes certain that poem-song is made known to the Hobbits of the Shire in the persons of today's Family Heads.

And that Frodo would be upset that the precious dried mushrooms given him by Bilbo were WASTED by Boromir--well, that was simply fun to work in!

Myself, I can't stand the taste of beer, so I won't use the recipe, but my husband would have loved these, I'm certain!

Boromir dared to throw away mushrooms? In front of Frodo? Bet he never dared to that again! lol!
So this is what prompted Sam to write the song? Unfortunately, most of the family heads are only voting for it because that’s what their Thain, Master and Mayor want - oh, and that king bloke too. But as Sam said, a few did listen and are beginning to understand, and that’s a start.

Author Reply: It was a delight to write this one, I found. The poem started working on me last November; it was a joy to finish it and write this story to explain it.

Thanks so!

Well, you know already how I think about the way most of the Hobbits treated Frodo, so I really felt like cheering Pippin, Merry, Frodo and Will on! Most of them may still not really believe anything, but I hope some do, and it may shut up the others a little bit. Sometimes I wonder if they would believe it when the King himself or the Elves came and told the story, too?

Author Reply: Well, in my-verse Elladan and Elrohir had sung the Lay of Frodo of the Nine Fingers for the Shire his first Midsummer back, and Aragorn told his own story of Frodo's victory when he visited the worthies of the Shire at the Brandywine Bridge just after the unveiling of the memorial to the Hobbits in front of the Citadel. Most still don't undertand or believe, but a few do, and those are the ones who matter.

Thanks so!

Hey Larner - I had to comment on the story and the recipe...

I always enjoy the stories [I never fail to tell you either, especially on LJ! :)] but i especially enjoy the recipes! I usually get something new to enjoy out of them... I confess I never considered beer batter pancakes, although I do enjoy beer battered fries and fish... thanks for broadening my horizons!

Author Reply: So glad you did! Friends love beer-batter pancakes, although I don't particularly care for them, so did this partly in their honor. And it's so great to hear from you whenever!

Take care, and God bless you and your family.

A time for truth indeed - that's telling that Trosco who had absolutely no clue but certainly does now! I love that snatch of Sam's song - now please you have to post all of it, dear Larner, not just tease us with a little!

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: Well, now you've seen the whole thing. Glad you liked the defiance shown! Thanks so, Antane!
