Another Moment of your Time  by Larner 18 Review(s)
Grey WondererReviewed Chapter: 1 on 1/20/2010
I love the fact that Sam sat up all night composing a poem and that he was so moved by the ignorance of those at the meeting. I also enjoyed the fact that to young Frodo, everything seems so obvious because he has grown up knowing what is so. I liked the image of Pippin stealing the poem and setting it to music as well as using it without Sam's leave for an important cause. Also, I could just see Merry standing there daring anyone to disagree.

Very enjoyable.

Author Reply: I can so imagine Sam doing exactly this. And for Frodo-lad this must have been so frustrating, knowing how close his father and Uncle Frodo came to dying and yet the majority of Shirefold could care less!

And Merry would stand up for both his cousins, the one present and the one absent but under discussion! Am so glad this feels real to you. Thank you!

I guess people find it hard to understand what they not experienced. At least some still recall Frodo and what he did.

Author Reply: They may not appreciate what he did "Outside," but at least a few appreciate what he did within the Shire to help with its restoration! I'm so glad Benlo and Will made it plain they were to be present!

Oh, Larner! I love Pippin in this one! After all of his telling Sam, "Never mind what they say," he went ahead and let them all have it with both barrels, and then some!

And then on top of all that-- it's a RECIPE!FIC!!!! Good heavens!

I feel as if it were my birthday!

Those pancakes sound really yum, too!

Author Reply: And I can so imagine Pippin doing just this--well, obviously, I guess....

And of COURSE it's a recipe-fic, although just why I'm not certain. Have had beer-batter pancakes once and didn't particularly like them, but then personally I loathe the taste and smell of beer. But that's just me, of course. But for Hobbits? I think they'd love them! And I'm so very glad that Lindelea was pleased!

Thank you ever so much.

I really liked getting the context to your previous poem in here! As you know I have a lot of interest in how the Shire treated Frodo Baggins' memory after his departure, so I enjoyed your take on things and especially the small victory attained at the end. You're probably spot on as to why Frodo didn't encourage hobbits learning of what he did or why--although he seems to have been okay with Sam reading out of the Red Book!

Author Reply: I do believe that Sam read as frequently out of the Red Book as he could, but doubt many outside of the family paid that much attention, much less realized this wasn't just a dramatic tale. Or, if they did listen, I doubt they felt it had that much to do with their lives.

But am so glad you feel I caught Frodo's own somewhat conflicted feelings on the subject.

Thanks so, Celeritas.

Frodo-lad shook his head. “But even though most of them will vote for it and even convince their families to vote for it, still most of them think Uncle Frodo only went out of the Shire for a lark. They don’t really believe.”

Sam looked down on his son with a wry smile. "No, them don’t, and that’s a fact. But a few does--and that few is what’s important."

I totally agree!

And well done, Pippin! He waited for the right moment to sing the song to the family heads and that way he gained their attention. Together with Merry and Sam - not to forget Frodo-lad and old Will - he was able to make at least some of them believe.

It is also remarkable the Pippin was *able* to wait ;-) Before the quest this would have been impossible. He has grown a lot!

Author Reply: Oh, our golden lad here has indeed grown up in the intervening years, and now as Thain has a far better appreciation of his own people than he did as a callow lad off on his first adventure. And it was wonderful to be able to work Will Whitfoot into this! I enjoyed it that he decided to make an appearance!

Thanks so very much, Andrea.

Awww. *blushes*

How sad, and yet true to form, that Frodo is honoured everywhere except his own country. I love that the remaining Travellers gain some sort of recognition for him, even grudging and perfunctory as it is, and that Frodo's namesake is fiercely protective of both Sam and Sam's beloved Master.

I love fiery Pippin, reminiscent of his standing up for Frodo, the "little cock-a-whoop" as they began the scouring of the Shire, and Merry's firm and steady support.

The song, of course, is perfect--you can hear Sam's frustration and sorrow in the words, amid the wonder of what mere hobbits managed--with a little supernatural help, perhaps--to achieve.

And I like Mayor Will speaking up, quiet but stubborn in his knowledge, better than most of the others' there, of Frodo's struggles in those last months in the Shire, and firm in his respect for what Frodo accomplished in the Shire (forget what he did in the Outside World--Will knew very well how badly the Shire had been damaged (like himself, after his time in the Lockholes), and how much had to be done before restoration was complete, if indeed it ever could be.

The wee hobbits are talking to me, and Zoe needs her breakfast, so my thoughts are fragmenting and flying away. However, I will force myself to concentrate a little longer, just long enough to speak a resounding word of "Thanks!" for this birthday treat!

Off to begin our science lessons, along with a fortifying cup of tea...

*hugs*

Author Reply: I can't think that Frodo-lad would be anything but protective of his father and the memory of his "Uncle." And I was indeed thinking of that line from the book, and Pippin's reaction then. That he'd become even more this way as he matured just seemed likely, and that his sense of timing should also grow more refined.

I was so pleased that Will insisted on being part of the meeting--he's stayed quiet for quite a while, and I find I quite like the old fellow. But as in my-verse Frodo spent time with him and Mina during the months he served as deputy Mayor, it seemed likely that he, too, would want to let folks know that Frodo did his part in the restoration of the Shire, even if few realized just how much he'd done, quietly behind the walls of the Council Hole.

Anyway, am so very glad that you enjoyed your birthday gift, and again joy to the children and Zoe and the hubby! I hope to visit again during the second week of February.

That's a wonderful backstory to Sam's song, and Pippin's strength of character -- and love for his cousin -- truly shines through.

Author Reply: Indeed, Shirebound--and precisely what I'd intended. Thank you so!

Very clever start Larner. I did a double-take, as I am sure you intended.

I found myself getting alternately cross/angry & saddened alongside those you really knew Frodo Baggins.

And in case I hadn't commented elsewhere yet - loved the poem.

Very happy Birthday Lindelea. One of the first people I started to chat to on SOA. Thank you for being one of the people to introduce me to fanfiction.

Author Reply: Am so glad I appear to have managed to communicate just what I'd intended, Harrowcat. And again I find our beloved Lindelea has managed to inspire friends--but then, what else could I expect? She's a special lady indeed.
