In the Court of the High King  by Dreamflower 24 Review(s)
MîdhaerReviewed Chapter: 1 on 6/17/2010
I had a feeling Aragorn would be the kind of person to ignore protocol completely. It seems to me he didn't realize court protocol mostly involved him sitting on the throne while Faramir does all the work. I think the hobbits were the perfect excuse for him to ignore protocol, given their informal nature. Wonderful job thus far. I can't wait to find out what happens next.

Author Reply: In my mind, he's been chipping away at protocol for a while, and this arrival of the hobbits gives him a big chance to throw some more of it aside and set a new precedent. And because they are hobbits, the people are not going to really mind.

Hooray! Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah! What a proper welcome for the Hobbits of the Shire!

Great start!

You could feel with the hobbits kneeling nervously before the High Kings throne.
But somewhere inside my mind I wondered how long Aragorn would stick to protocol ;-)

He's the best king ever!

Author Reply: Yes indeed! They were all very nervous, but I knew that Aragorn would greet them himself!

He is.

What a delight. I know I will enjoy this tale as it unfolds and I will have to look back through archives to find the prior ones and get more familiar with the characters. Trust to Aragon, both demonstrating the value that he places in the hobbits, as well as making them feel more comfortable in this city of large people and larger buildings. Taking himself and the Queen from the dais down to Hobbit level was a stroke of genius and exactly what Strider would have done. Beautifully crafted - this will be a joy to read.

Author Reply: Thank you very much! I'm glad to be continuing the story I began in "A New Reckoning" and "The Road to Edoras".

Yes, Aragorn is serving notice to the populace of the city that hobbits enjoy a very special place in his heart.

Yeah you are continuing the story at last. Looking forward to seeing how this progresses. But I cna imagine how the hobbits felt as they appraoched the throne. Waiting to see what happens while they are in Minas Tirith - a lot I suspect - and of course Aragorn has to deal with the two miscreants as well.

Time to go and re-read the earlier stories I feel

Author Reply: Yes, at last!

He certainly does have the miscreants to deal with...

Poor Hobbits, I can imagine how they feel. Edoras was already a bit much, and while Meduseld is beautiful in its own right, it's a bit rustic in comparison and can't really prepare anyone for the White City. Minas Tirith is not only impressing, but intimidating, and for Hobbits probably even more so than Men, as they aren't used to anything even remotely similar. And then to be introduced to the High King ... though I guess Aragorn will soon put them at ease.

Loved it how the audience started out all proper and Aragorn then decided to screw protocol and cut the whole formal stuff short. And how like him to notice that Poppy was having problems with her knees and help her up! I'm certain she will appreciate it.

Look forward to more! :)

Author Reply: Yes, they've moved up in increasing gulps when it comes to the towns and cities of Men: Bree and Tharbad seemed huge to them-- until they encountered Edoras! And now Minas Tirith! Which of course, is the largest city of Men in the West!

I think Aragorn and Faramir had decided ahead of time to "screw protocol"-- both as a way of showing their friendship and honor to the hobbits, and to set their own sort of precedent for dealing with the hobbits. It's a way of serving notice that hobbits have a whole different set of privileges!

And he'd certainly notice that Poppy had a bit of difficulty kneeling, and so give her a hand up. This was also a sort of tribute from me to a number of SCA monarchs who served me that same favor from time to time.

Finally! And just the other week I was wondering when (or if) you would ever write this sequel. Great start and I look forward to reading the rest. Just wish the chapters weren't so short. I just get into them and.... ack! where's the rest? *LOL* Thanks for writing this. I know I'm not the only one who's been waiting to find out what happens to Freddy and Berilac and Mistress Poppy and Viola and, yes, even Clodio and Dago, and the other hobbits as they experience life in 'the big city'. *grin*

Author Reply: LOL! Well, we hobbit writers often tend towards shorter chapters, LOL! But I am really going to try and keep this updated regularly!

I too, am looking forward to their stay! They will be learning a lot-- and so will the people of Gondor!

Author Reply: Yay!!! ((((hugs))))

I hope to keep updating regularly again. (And BTW, I have not forgotten the bunnies you sent me... keep your eyes open!)
