By Such a Foolish Name  by Cairistiona 18 Review(s)

Hey

While reading this on Teitho, I was thinking the whole time, "this reads like a cairistiona ficlet". And sure enough....

I fell in love with Bowen and this story. Such a thoughtful and kind man. You make your characters so endearing..what's not to love? All Breelanders aren't so mean and aloof after all.

And Aragorn..through Bowen's perception, you've made him more enigmatic than ever.

Another fic that has become one of my favorites!

Author Reply: Thanks, RS! Yeah, you spotted me. LOL I have no idea how to disguise my writing, I guess, because several readers spotted it as mine. I'm glad you liked the story and Bowen... it was fun to look at Strider through a friendly Breelander's eyes, a rare thing! And isn't Enigmatic Strider fun? *g*

Thanks for the review!

Oh rats...complete? I really liked this and wanted to read more. I hope Strider wasn't too ill. :( At least he has someone looking out for him.

Author Reply: Thanks, LisaG! Yes, this one is complete, but there's no ruling out a sequel or follow-up. *g* I'm curious about what happened next, myself, so maybe if the muse cooperates we'll see more of Bowen and Strider. Thanks for reading and leaving a review!

Oh, this is beautiful. Nice to see some common good in Arda. It always annoyed me that the Breelanders were so callous, complacency is no excuse for lack of manners! As for no fit name for a king...all you need to do is translate it into an ancient language that almost no one speaks anymore, and it works great! LOL.

Author Reply: Thank you, AzureSkye! I've done my share of writing the Breelanders as the callous type, so it was nice to change gears and show their kinder side (even Barliman's!) And yes, too bad Bowen didn't know Quenya or he might have translated it in his head and decided Strider *could* be a king's name after all! (I wonder if he'll make the connection, once he learns that strangely-named Strider is now impressively named Telcontar!)

Love the story. Is a silly name, isn’t? No fitting for a King.
Bowen is a good observant character; he can deduce a lot only from his observations.
Good that poor Strider found some kind, softhearted hobbit that took pity of him.
Thank you,

Author Reply: Thank you, Fantasia! I'm glad you enjoyed this, and it's interesting that you interpreted Bowen as a hobbit... I intended for him to be one of the Men that lived in Breeland, as Rushlight is given as the name of a family of Men according the the Encyclopedia of Arda, but I suppose you could take it either way. :) But whether Man or Hobbit, he definitely has a kind heart, even if he does have a pretty limited idea of what makes a good name.

Hee! What king indeed would have such a silly name?

A lovely sketch, Cairistiona, rich with detail. Bowen is indeed an astute observer of character. And, oh, you reminded me much too acutely of how miserable it is to be cold and tired and sick and out in the elements....

You know, I'd like to think that the future King of Gondor might remember in some small way all the kind people who helped him in his more, erm, disreputable-looking days.... Imagine getting a thank-you note from a great king, and finding out that he's that massively tall guy with the funny name that you helped when he was ill!

Nicely done, Cairistiona!

Author Reply: Thank you, Barbara! Oh, that would be a nice thing, all those people getting beautiful cards from the Great King for kindnesses rendered that they probably barely remember. "Hmm, was he that grim-looking fellow that I let sleep in the barn? He was a king?? Fancy that!" (Or, alternately, they'd simply faint dead away!)

I'm glad you enjoyed this little vignette... thanks for the review!

This was a really nice look at Aragorn from a totally different perspective. Very nicely crafted.

Author Reply: Thank you, Erulisse (one L)! I'm glad you enjoyed it... I like taking a look at Aragorn through the eyes of other characters. I imagine the men of Breeland had a sort of fascination with Rangers, and it was fun to work with that idea in this story.

Hee-hee! No king ever, indeed! *giggles*

Wonderful story, dear. It got one of my votes. And yes, I recognized it was yours. :)

Author Reply: Thank you, Ellynn, for voting for it and for reviewing it here. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Can you imagine the look on Bowen's face when he finds out Strider is a king... and still uses "Strider", in a way? *g*

Weathered was the word that sprang to mind, like an old oaken barn that had withstood the onslaught of the seasons for years beyond count and would continue to do so for untold years to come.

That's a great description. How these folk must have been amazed when the King at last took his throne, and his story was told.

Author Reply: Thank you, shirebound! I love to imagine the look on Bowen's face when he finds out that Strider *is* indeed a name for a king!
