Dreamflower's Mathoms III  by Dreamflower 25 Review(s)

One thing I've noticed: in none of Fiondil's modern-day fanfiction stories is there any mention of J.R.R. Tolkien or his works, let alone of Peter Jackson and his movies. I can only assume that Fiondil's Tolkien universe, as set in modern times, is a universe in which J.R.R. Tolkien was never born--otherwise, people in his stories would be freaking out to see Tolkien's imaginary characters coming to life and walking around parts of this modern-day world! (Finrod himself, working in a bookstore as he does, could hardly fail to come across books titled The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and Tolkien's other Middle-earth books. =))

Author Reply: You are quite right. None of Tolkien's work has been published in the EA universe. It's one of the reasons it's AU.

I've wondered if perhaps in this world, JRRT did not make it home from WW I. Or perhaps there was no Stanley Unwin who took a chance on the odd stories by an Oxford professor. So far as I know, Fiondil only said the stories did not exist. He never said why, I don't think.

I logged onto SoA today, really without thinking. I've been so used to coming here for Fiondil's stories on Mondays... Old habits die hard, I guess. There was an initial pang, but then I saw and read this story (BTW, I love how you write hobbits), and well, now that I can see well enough to type, it is just a lovely story that does indeed fit and flow beautifully with the EA Fiondilverse. Thank you so much for this lovely little gem! It's a treasure.

Author Reply: You are very welcome, and I thank you for your kind words.

Fiondil created such a richly envisioned universe in the EA stories, that it occasionally draws me in just as the professor's own work does, with the sort of "I wonder what happened next?" That engenders fanfic to begin with.

A very lovely tale on it's own, I especially like the ending. And a most fitting tribute to Fiondil I can think off, I'm sure he would have greatly enjoyed what you have written based on his story :)

It's been a overly busy monday for me like usual and I find I greatly miss the EA updates that had become a part of my monday routine. Reading your story was just what I needed!

Take care,
Corine

Author Reply: Thank you. I appreciate that.

I am very glad that I helped to brighten your Monday. You are right that Monday's are just not the same.

Dearest Dreamflower,

I've waited to review until I can do it without tears running down my face. I know Atto Fiondil would adore this tribute as much as I do. Elanor of the Tower, indeed :) Of course, Sam Gardener is perfect for her - dare I wonder if he's in the SCA too, and his name is Fastred or somesuch? If he's heard the old tales himself...hehe. Well done :)

I told you on the phone you've become my Amme indonyo - not as a replacement for Atto in any way but because over a long period of time, you have become that, through Aunt Dora, especially. It just took a while to articulate it. Anyway, I think Atto Fiondil would be proud of this story, and it'll be a long wait for EA 4 no doubt, or what there is of it, but I'm sure this will fit right in. *huggles*

Author Reply: I can't tell you much about young Sam Gardener except that he's a very nice and kind young man and a good police officer. Of course, Legolas is amused by his name, and secretly takes it as a sign that he's right for Gabriella.

Thank you, dear. (((hugs)))

Sorry for typing the wrong name Dreamflower! Still not quite awake. It is an excellent story.

Author Reply: 'S all right, dear! That sort of thing happens to everyone!

And thank you!

Oh, how wonderful, and how perfect a tribute to Fiondil! We each have had our own manner of trying to equal his gifts to the community, and I think he must love this one!

Bless Gandalf for appearing here, and reminding us of Legolas's love for Pippin and the other Hobbits that were part of the Fellowship.

Elanor of the Tower, eh? And she love Sam Gardener? But of course!

Author Reply: I have hopes that he would have liked it. He seemed to appreciate it if others wanted to pay homage to his world when he was with us.

I think the persona of Gandalf would never be too far under the surface of Olorin, and after all he and Legolas are the last of the Fellowship. The Big Folk of the company all loved their hobbits, and I am sure, always would.

I had fun playing with Gabriella's name a little. As a little girl, Gabby expressed her chatterbox enthusiasm. Like many adolescents do, she chose as a teen to pick a more dignified nickname, Ella. Which made it perfect when it came time to choose an SCA name: Elanor of the Tower, which would be an acceptable "historical" name, and also harken back to the other Elanor. Did Legolas' stories influence that choice? I am quite sure they did.

As I said to Garnet Took, the name means something to Legolas, but aside from being a very decent young man, this Sam doesn't have much in common with that other Sam. Still, I am quite sure that name helped Legolas accept him as a suitor for his "niece"!

This was a wonderful story and a wonderful tribute to Fiondil. I cried as hard at the end of the story as I did at the news of Fiondil's death. You did a great job. Thank you.

Author Reply: Thank you. (((hugs)))

Oh, my dear Dreamflower, Fiondil would have loved this glimpse into Gabriella's future and her interaction with Legolas over time. I love the way it shows the community growing and molding itself over the years, and it rings true to his own themes. Thank you for writing this :-)

Author Reply: Thank you so much. I love that Legolas had a chance to be a part of this world, and I just couldn't get the idea out of my mind that he'd have a special relationship with little Gabriella.

I tried to strike a balance between revealing my own speculations about how some things might go while being vague enough that it would not be likely to clash with what's been left behind for EA4. Still, I did try to guess where he might be going with the inclusion of the SCA, and with his emphasis that it would likely be future generations who would have to deal with the final conflict.

I am so glad you like this!

Fiondil would have liked this story, Dreamflower; I'm sure of it. It's a great sequel to his Elf Academy series, and a marvelous tribute to Fiondil as a fanfiction author. It's such a shame that he's not alive to read it! =(

Author Reply: I have hope that he would have liked it. I wish he were with us here, too.
