The Least of Rings  by Dreamflower 31 Review(s)
LindeleaReviewed Chapter: 5 on 6/3/2013
"Rivendell doesn't exactly have signposts." I love Gandalf's understatement! Sounds just like him.

Aha, Lobelia is speculating -- yes, Frodo, you had better take care.

Author Reply: Thanks--Gandalf does have that rather dry and understated way of speaking!

Lobelia would jump if she thought he was leaving--a very different reason for the need of secrecy than in canon.

Number 24! LOL! (I wonder what became of the first 23?)

So, not the Ruling Ring, it seems. No wonder it didn't have the hold on Bilbo that I expected.

Author Reply: No. It's not. It still makes him invisible; it still extends his life to a certain extent, but it was never made to dominate!

Pande has written an excellent story about Samaril--his backstory is that he was one of "Annatar's" apprentices during the era when rings were being experimented with. I was thrilled when she offered me the loan of him for this!

Oh, my! Bilbo gives it up so easily!

Author Reply: Yes, very easily indeed, with no need of coaxing from an upset wizard. And no mention of feeling like butter spread over too much bread...

I can certainly empathise with Frodo here, both in terms of morning reluctance and love of bacon and mushroom omelette! (Just finished a bacon and tomato omelette, as a matter of fact.)

Again, a great gapfiller that could fit the original as well as an AU version. While I'm not thinking of the book at the moment, I can hear the movie Frodo saying, "Bilbo's Ring..." in the scene with Gandalf after the Birthday Party, showing he knew what it was and it wasn't a secret from him.

Author Reply: There are hints though, in how the ring is handled...

:::Raising my mug along with Balin::: (though it only contains herbal tea)

Such a lovely, homely chapter. Sounds as if it could plausibly fit in to either original or AU.

(and if this is AU, does Balin have a happier end?)

Author Reply: Yes, THIS chapter could...

Questions may be answered. Or not. ;)

Huh! Very interesting! I hadn't read this version before...

Author Reply: It was the first version, as published in 1937, before JRRT had ever had the idea of the One Ring.

What a fun series! I am looking forward to reading more and I am glad that Frodo doesn't have The Ring. Enjoyed these last few chapters that I am now caught up with.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: It's nice to know that Frodo won't have to deal with the One Ring, isn't it?

Time to set the dragon on Lobelia! Dratted woman!

Now what is she up to?

Huggs,
Lynda

Author Reply: Whatever she could be up to if she believed Frodo had left the Shire!

That is one of the funnier things I've read in a long time. The inscription reminds me of one of those little slips you find in the packing materials: "Inspected by number 32". And now that we see that this is one of the lesser rings, the use of the original, less ominous form of "riddles in the dark" in the prologue seems very appropriate. It will be fun to see where you go from here.

Author Reply: Actually, that's sort of what I had in mind, that and that it's one of the practice rings, so Samaril made the twenty-fourth, LOL!

Yes, I tried to leave hints that this ring wasn't as serious as the others, with Bilbo less reluctant to give it up and being OK with Frodo trying it on.

And there was Gandalf, getting his knickers in a twist over it being The One Ring!

Huggs,
Lynda

Author Reply: Yup. He was SO SURE that's what it was--he was quite shocked to learn he was wrong!! *grin*
