The Accidental Book Club of Bag End   by Grey Wonderer 20 Review(s)
Garnet TookReviewed Chapter: 1 on 12/28/2014
This was a good little story. I think I fall mainly in Sam and Pippin's camp. I can definitley appreciate Merry's point of view though. I liked the movies but they just didn't have the impact for me that the book did. I came to tolerate certain character and really like some others. I felt let down that the deaths of some characters didn't affect me at all when I really liked them both in the book and the movie.

Thanks for sharing this with us and we want to see more from you again. You're one of the authors I miss seeing around here.

Author Reply: Thank you so much for the review and the encouragement. It's very nice to know I've been missed. Thank you for that.
I am glad there are four hobbits. It makes it easy to show both sides of things. I'm glad some of it reflected your feelings. I figured Sam would like a bit of romance. After all, he did have 13 children. : )

“I’ve had too much ale this Yule,” Merry sighed.

“As you do every Yule, Meriadoc,” Pippin yawned, stretching out on the sofa and closing his eyes.

“No, I believe I've had more than usual I’d say,” Merry said thoughtfully. He peered at the book in his hands and frowned.

“I lost count of your consumption this year so I dare not comment,” Pippin said. “And, as there were, and still are, a great many hobbits about, all of whom have likely had too much ale, I doubt you can put a number to it.”

“You were counting?” Merry asked looking up from the book for a moment.

“I always do in the beginning. Then things become slightly hazy and I begin to question myself. Was that number six or number nine, I say to myself. Those two always put me to some bother as upside down it’s one of them and right side up it’s the other, so usually I lose count at six,” Pippin said. “Of course, if I make it past six, then I tend to lose it at nine.”

“No, I was meaning to ask, why were you counting my ales?” Merry said, more directly. You had to be direct with Pippin or you got such nonsense as that information about the sixes and nines.

“I always do,” Pippin repeated raising up on the sofa, seemingly wide awake now when only just moments before he had looked about ready to drift off.

“You make it a habit to count the number of ales that I have and you do this for what purpose?” Merry asked looking slightly annoyed. “Even my mum doesn’t count my drinks. Why would you?”

“So I can see how many I should have,” Pippin said as if this made perfect sense.

“So, you decide how many drinks you should have by counting mine?”

“I do. I think it’s very practical of me. It might be one of the few practical things I do.”

“How, by any stretch of the imagination, is this a matter of practicality?” Merry asked now more curious than annoyed.

“Well, normally I come to these Yule events with you, so I like for one of us to be able to find our way home again. If I count your drinks, then I can determine if you will be able to get us home again or back to where ever we might be staying. If you’ve had too much then I know that the task will fall to me,” Pippin smiled. “If it’s my duty to see us home, then I try not to have more than is prudent.”

Pippin as Designated Walker. *snerk* If that patented GW dialogue had been the only part of the story, it would have been enough for me! But you still had more up your sleeve!

The Adventures of Oblib; ohmigosh, that's too funny! Poor Merry!

I love the way each of the characters react: Merry indignant at the changes to something he likes the way it is; Pippin liking the extra adventure, and Sam the happily married enjoying the romance; while Frodo the scholar knows the whole history behind this mysterious second edition, LOL!

And the names were hilarious--I especially liked "Token"! *grin*

I'm so glad your Muse came back! I hope it doesn't take another long vacation, because the world NEEDS more GW hobbits!

((((((((hugs and hugs and hugs and hugs)))))))))))))

Author Reply: When I get a *snerk* from you then I know I'm on the right track. lol
So glad you enjoyed it. I don't know if the world really needs more of my hobbits but if the muse sticks around then, there will be more.
I had fun with the names. I wanted people to know who was who but it was fun playing with it all. I stuck Bergil into this one because Jackson's inclusion of a young lad in The Hobbit when he'd left poor Bergil out of the LOTR films struck me as kind of funny. As to Token, well, I think that one explains itself. lol
I did try to show all opinions in this and thankful there were enough hobbits to do the job.
Thanks so much for the lovely review. It's encouraging that people will still read this kind of stuff from me.

This was very cute and clever. I'll read Merry's original version!

Author Reply: Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it and if any of the hobbit in this story reflected my opinions, Merry came the closest. For some reason, when I write, Merry nearly always gets to express my personal take on things, if I have one.

You are awesome! I love it! Morris Mapleshield, Token, Armulus, Bored, Boar... those are such great code names i love it!
I agree with Merry's thoughts because they echo yours and mine! =) So great! Should link it to speedyhobbit for i'm sure she'll like it too.
This is so great. I love it a lot! =) It's all our grievances towards PJ and i share them toO! :)

Author Reply: You are more awesome! hehehe
The names were fun to come up with. I'm so glad you liked them.
I knew that you, Speedyhobbit and I were in the Merry camp. The reviews are pretty even on it though so I'm glad I was able to show both sides of the issue. Thank goodness Tolkien gave us plenty of hobbits to play with.
Thank you for this sweet review! (hugs)

OH MY GOODNESS!!!! I am DYING with laughter over here!!! :-D How Absolutely PERFECT!!! (Huge round of applause) Please excuse the capitals and exclamations - I am completely serious. Your story is excellently written and I enjoyed it immensely! Thank you!

If you can believe it, even after reading your prologue I was halfway through the story before I realized what you were doing...and had to go back to the beginning and read it again, this time with my smirk getting wider and wider as I read! :-D I will be sharing this with my brother who went with me to see the Battle of the Five Armies last week. Thank you again!
~Lossen

Author Reply: I don't mind the capitals or the exclamations at all. I'm just so glad that you enjoyed it. I hope your brother does too. Thank you for this lovely review and for taking the time to leave it. Your exclamations and capitals are much appreciated and so I give you a big, THANK YOU!!!!!

Oh, dear, love it! Goes to show it takes all kinds to make the world turn! Did love the discussion regardin Aragorn and Arwen marrying over Elrond's disapproval. We have so missed you!

Author Reply: I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Thankfully, I had enough characters and was able to show both opinions. I believe it comes off about even or I tried to make it even. LOL That bit with Aragorn and Arwen just turned up as I was writing and I went with it. So glad you enjoyed that. Thank you for reading this one.

Ha. (I repeat myself.)

I love Pippin and Merry's conversation in the beginning. For the first thing, it sounds like they've both had a number of ales. For another, it explains the splendid parties that were evidently so talked about they made their way into a book -- no need to worry about finding one's way home, when one is the host.

I once had a brother with this exact quality: Pippin had a way of taking you on a verbal side trip and making you lose the path. If you weren’t careful, the point of things got lost in the muddle.

Oh, and was that a reference to Princess Bride?

Milkweed! I love your creative re-names.

“How could you be less-than thrilled with Strider?” Pippin objected.
I can imagine a few scenarios. Between baths, for example.

She isn’t supposed to be in the book.
Reminds me of Sam saying, in Osgiliath, "We're not even supposed to be here!" (With which I was in complete agreement.)

...just so long as the ale isn't watered down...

No no no, the Bowman would not have been the one to train the dragon. That would be his son. (Bergil? Where have I heard that name before?)

This made me laugh out loud: “Whatever you are reading, it must require a lot of shouting,” Frodo said tying his robe about his waist. “I could hear Merry *reading* all the way in my room. Are you each taking turns reading aloud without me?”

“Is there a point to this?” Merry asked. Reference to While You Were Sleeping perhaps? I can hope, anyhow.

“The good one?” Merry objected as Frodo handed Sam the book.
I know, Merry, I know. I had the same reaction when people told me how superior the film The Fellowship of the Ring was to the source.

Yeah, that Jack in the Beanstalk... I can see Sam's version, should he rewrite the story. He'd make it Jack and the Tater Vine... potatoes and tomatoes are related, after all, and after you cut down potato vines (or rip them out) you still have the taters in the ground. Imagine the size of those taters! Still probably, couldn't hold a candle to the ones grown by the Gaffer, in Sam's opinion, I'm sure.

Thank you for the most fun I've had in days. Maybe weeks. Months, even.

Don't be a stranger. (notice the "a" in that sentence. definite shade of meaning.)

Author Reply: First, I love your detailed reviews. It lets me see what I've written from another POV. So very helpful and such fun! Thank you!
Glad you caught the 'Bergil' reference. Since poor Bergil didn't make it into the LOTR films, I just substituted him for the child we did get in The Hobbit. lol
As to The Princes Bride, I've never seen it. It drives a friend of mine half mad that I'm sure a geek in other ways but have never seen that classic film of geekdom. Now the While You Were Sleeping reference was intended. I just didn't expect anyone to catch it. Good job!
So very glad you had fun reading this one. I will try very hard not to be "a" stranger. If my muse will stick around then I will keep on turning up.
Thank you again for reviewing. So many of my old friends on here have moved on. It's great to see a familiar name. (hugs)

I'm convinced that SOA doesn't like Macs, lol. I need to figure out how to put the font to I size that I can read.

Anyhoo....I'm with Merry!! Yes, I enjoyed the movies, and the first one showed real promise, but I am wholly disappointed with the Token character and the triangular love affair between her, Kell, and Armulus (sp? Can barely see it). I feel guilty complaining, but really, I could have done without all that. Loved the original!!

Aside from that, your hobbit characters are still sweet and hilarious! I hope your Muse comes around more often!

Author Reply: When I was writing Merry, I let him say what I would like to say. You are in the same group as I am on that deal. : ) Good to know we still have things in common. That gives me a smile.
I attempted to let Sam and Pippin enjoy the new version of things in order to show both sides and to give Merry something to rant about. hehehe I enjoy letting Merry blow off steam. I let Frodo be the voice of reason because, well, that's who he is, isn't he?
Thank you so much for the review. I had no idea that you were still keeping a watch on things. I will be emailing you soon to chat. Good luck with the Mac! I am so jealous! (hugs)

Oh this made me howl with laughter GW. Perfect and captures my feelings about the films so well.
Good films in themselves but I imagine most Tolkien purists are cringing. Lovely to read with you again too!

Author Reply: Harrowcat! Hi! How are you? I'm so glad this made you laugh. Good to know that somewhere in all of that dialogue I caught your feelings on the films. I was trying to show all sides of it and thankful I think I managed that at least. It is wonderful to hear from you again. Thank you for reading and reviewing. It makes posting here feel like old times and I do miss those days. (hugs)

You rascal. This is delightful! And it's especially delightful to read fic from you again. *beams*

Smug is a great name for that dragon, and the very idea of "collaborative efforts in literature by the elves and the dwarves" is wonderful. But of course the best parts are the "Grey Wonderer" signature lines, such as:

"A watered down character from Rivertown! They live on the water,” Pippin said as Merry glared at him. “It’s amusing if you think about it. Everyone who lives there is probably watered down, wouldn’t you think?”

“I don’t’ believe you want to know what I’m thinking just now,” Merry growled.

Poor long-suffering Merry. I enjoyed this very much. :)

Author Reply: Thank you so much for this delightful review! I'm glad you liked the dragon's name. I had lots of fun coming up with all the names but that one just seemed like a natural choice. hehehe He was a bit smug, wasn't he?
I enjoyed doing this and I hope the muse is back to stay for a while but you just never know. It's great to see what parts people enjoyed so I thank you for letting me know that the dialogue worked for you. Sometimes I'm afraid that I'm the only one it works for. lol My hobbits talk way too much in these little stories.
Thank you again! See you on LJ! *waves*
