What a lovely vignette - and a much needed, gentle and hobbitlike, diversion.

Author Reply: Thank you. I just love imagining scenes like this.

Now that made me smile! What a very hobbity conversation :-)

You do such a marvellous job with their voices. And I love that underneath it all, it was an act of friendship and love. What a perfect ending too. I like to think of Merry looking after Sam as he looks out for Frodo.

Author Reply: Thanks, Dot! I was originally going to end this with Sam diverting Merry's attention as well, but Merry was smart enough to co-opt the idea for his own. :)

Good for Sam. The Tookses and Bagginses and Brandybucks might think they're the masters of the Shire, but they couldn't last without the solid strength and wisdom of people like Samwise Gamgee.

And beer makes such an excellent diversion!

Author Reply: And I can imagine Sam really pondering this question! I remember in FOTR where he was "saying farewell to the beer-barrel in the cellar" of Bag End.

Thank you for your review. :)

I am all admiration for you and how well you write these hobbits! They're all just spot-on and the story could easily slip right into canon. Sam is the kind of friend everyone wants, and I love his diversion here. What a lovely tale! Thank you for sharing. :)

Author Reply: Thank you for your kind words! I've loved hobbits for so long, and sometimes I like to close my eyes and imagine conversations between them.

Oh, this is so delightful, loving and heartwarming. I love how first Sam distracts Frodo then Merry does the same for Sam. Hobbits at their best. :)

Author Reply: Thank you so much, Addie. I had no idea that the story would end with Merry distracting Sam until I found myself writing it!

Such a charming interlude with the four hobbits. Dear Sam is always thinking about Frodo, and Merry was always thinking of everyone else. And how I would love to hear Gandalf sing.

Author Reply: Thank you, Mews. This was such a fun scene to write. I suspect that Gandalf will find much less rest in Rivendell now than he had imagined!

*grin* Spot on! I can just imagine Sam thinking up such a question. And let's face it--it's just the sort of conversation to keep hobbits diverted for hours.

I can also imagine Pippin gladly passing that on to Gandalf, and pestering him for an answer!

(Actually, I just thought of one: perhaps the enchantment rests with Barliman's barrels. Any ale place in them would receive the blessing!)

Author Reply: Now that's a terrific notion! Feel free to run away with it.

I'm so happy you enjoyed this wee tale. Poor Gandalf is in for it now. :)

Janet, you have absolutely captured the voices of each hobbit so well. I can do Sam I think and Bilbo, but you're one of the few that can do all five of them. This is a lovely little tale. So in keeping with what it means to be a hobbit and so fitting for this group of hobbits at this time.

I was explaining hobbits and their customs to a friend last night, and though I am perhaps too tall to be one I am round enough. They brought cake and I gave gifts to my aids that take care of me in honor of my birthday. So now there's another group with an appreciation of hobbits LOL. Thank you so much for this.

Author Reply: It's such a joy to be a part of this celebration for you today, dear one. May the lightheartedness of hobbits shine about you, and the gift of true friends never waver. ♥

Lovely story about friendship and friends amusing one another, even in hard times. Nobody writes hobbits better, Shirebound.

Author Reply: Thank you, Daw, what a lovely thing to say. Hobbits live in my heart and imagination now and always.
