Home is the Hunter  by Bodkin 12 Review(s)

Oh God, Bodkin. This is exquisite. The language is just beautiful. I'd forgotten how wonderfully you write.

I love how you draw Celebrian's character and enjoyed seeing her utterly undo Elrond :-) There's so much depth here and yet, I also just loved the romance of the moment.

And I do think Celebrian's new project is a worthwhile one! Stunning, Bodkin.

Author Reply: I love playing with words. But it's so difficult to come up with plot - and action!

Elrond needs Celebrian. It's a tragedy that he lost her for so long. My brother (who is a serious LOTR reader) feels that fanfiction is not True to the Word - but I think the Word needs amending in various points. Nothing wrong with a bit of romance to fortify the upright elf.

Thank you.

Bodkin, this was lovely. No one does gorgeous details like you do.

The very air sang of her presence, the motes of dust gleamed, and her nearness resonated in his bones

the gleam of her moon-bright hair and inhaled the freshness of unfurling leaves after spring rain

Those are so lovely and physical and right, and they set the stage for the moment when the Last Homely House comes to be.

‘Just because someone knows how to write, it does not mean that he should,’ Celebrían sniffed

Oh boy. You got that one right, Celebrian! Actually, I think this is one of the best characterizations of Celebrian I've seen, done in a few quick strokes.

deeper and wilder and more passionate. Her mother’s daughter, undoubtedly, but her father’s, too. Strong and wilful, generous and kind, understanding and intelligent. His wife, his Celebrían. He was still surprised that her parents had allowed him to approach her. How had they borne her decision to leave them for someone like him?

That makes her seem so substantive, so she's a far better match for Elrond than a wispy girl would be. I like the idea of her as her father's daughter as well as her mother's. Celeborn is an underappreciated character. And then he has to struggle to keep up with her...in a number of ways, actually. Like settling into his role at home in this valley rather than in a role as a warrior. And like "bringing new life" to his family.

I seem to have mostly quoted your story back to you. Sorry! But this was great.

Author Reply: Thanks, daw. I'm glad you like it. It's hard to imagine Elrond falling for a girlie girl. I think he would appreciate strength of mind.

Not a lot of plot, though. Plot is much more your thing. (Plus sustained characterisation and world building.)
