And Where Are the Children?  by Larner 18 Review(s)

Larner!

A wonderful first chapter. So much was lost in the Shire. I can feel the homeliness of the Shire and the deep regret of all that was lost.

Hope you are well!

MM

Author Reply: Am so glad you like this. I love the Shire, and am glad that I can help bring it to life.

Am well so far, although family troubles have made Thanksgiving a bit difficult this year. Hope you and yours are well, too.

I *really* like this family. :)

Author Reply: I do, too. They seem to be nice folk. ;)

It breaks my heart to imagine our beloved Shire and its hobbits so deeply hurt, so it's no wonder I keep writing all those "happy and healed" AU's!

I appreciate how you write Frodo and Sam as such a bonded team, as they ever have been.

Author Reply: The healing of the Shire was a hard job, and I'm certain all four of the Travellers took part in it. How it must have hurt Frodo to see so much damage done solely to hurt him by hurting his friends,

They are both committed to seeing all made right as well as they can. Sam still hasn't thought of the Lady's gift--how much that must have heartened him once he saw the effects of each grain of its dust as the new trees began to grow at many times their normal rate.

Many thanks for your comments, Shirebound!

Oh, one more observation. It appears that neither Sam or Frodo have any memory of the visions of themselves that the Ring created for their friends at home. It will be interesting to see how that comes out.

Author Reply: No, they don't have many memories not specifically focused on much more than their actual Ring-centered activities. It will be most interesting to see how they are reminded of these experiences. Heh! Again, thanks so, Demeter D.

I have to agree with Sam. "Mister Strider" would indeed have been pleased to see that Frodo had gained from his lessons in observing out in the wild. And, I am sure, "mad Baggins", Bilbo himself, would have taught Frodo as much as he could about being observant on their many treks across the Shire. And, curiouser and curiouser. There are beginning to be many hints that the children and their Gammer may indeed have found someplace safe in which to hide. Hobbits were said to be gifted in foraging for food, even in the winter. This is looking hopeful!

Author Reply: I suspect that all Hobbits were able to forage pretty easily, but getting starches in the winter would have been difficult, which would lead them to look for caches of seeds and nuts, I'd think. And as I have Sam say, I'm certain that Frodo was a quick study for learning to track, particularly once he was in Aragorn's company. Yes, Bilbo was likely to have taught him some woodcraft skills when he was younger.

As for the Teasel children--that remains to be seen, of course. Heh!

How did I miss the first chapter of this Larner? Intriguing and I love a good mystery. I think we share a delight in Cadfael. I am not going to speculate aloud. Looking forward to seeing how this unfolds.

Author Reply: Oh, but I do love Ellis Peter's/Elizabeth Pargeter's writing. I have all of the Brother Cadfael books as well as the Inspector Felse series, and my favorite book by her is the Heaven Tree trilogy.

Hope that the mystery isn't too obvious. So glad to hear from you!

Well, my latest deadline took until the strike of two, but I find this chapter goes just as well with morning coffee as with an herbal nightcap (which I eschewed in favor of going directly to bed). How lovely to see Frodo healthy and purposeful, and his faithful Sam — and a glimpse of Freddy and the Cottons! I’m intrigued at the hint of things to come, and grieved at how much has been lost at the ruffians’ hands, livelihoods and homes and simple comforts. I like Frodo’s determination, and how when the monumental restoration begins to feel overwhelming, Sam immediately bolsters him with hope and a report of other practical hobbits who are already tackling the rebuilding. Frodo is not alone. Shirefolk working together will restore the Shire. A hopeful vision.

Author Reply: To learn that so much was taken, and at times such odd things--that must have puzzled many of the Hobbits of the Shire at the time. But the Master tells us that many hands aided Sam as he saw the infrastructure of the Shire rebuilt, from the small hands of lads and lasses to the wrinkled ones of gammers and gaffers, as each sought to help others as he or she might. That must have heartened all four of the Travellers as they sought to remake their beloved land into the image of peace they remembered as they found others there so willing to help them.

It took until two in the morning? Aach! Although I remember having to stay up late correcting papers or devising particular lessons for my children when teaching. Brailling Spanish lessons often took days to complete!

Thanks so much, and love to the lasses, their father, and the furry ones.

I'm intrigued, Larner! And it's wonderful to see how much Sam and Frodo are already looking ahead to the restoration of the Shire and its folk.

Author Reply: It had to be so difficult for Frodo and Sam in particular to see how much of the Shire was damaged while they were gone, and how much in unnecessary want their neighbors and relatives found themselves. At least both now were able to work on the restoration. They must have been so heartened to find their fellow Hobbits were willing to aid them as they saw the work started.

Thanks so, Shirebound!
