Another wonderful read so atmospheric I don't think I have ever read such a great description of what spider nests would be like or how the wood elves would destroy them. Once again your word pictures are more powerful than the real thing. Loved that Todith thought Legolas might be like his brother while Eilian was thinking of his old captain as well. Also that Beliond championed his charge against Tinar Thank you for sharing your talent J

Author's reply

Glad you liked the spider stuff! I revised several times to make it as creepy as possible. I don't like touching spiders when they're a quarter inch across, so I just blew that feeling up big time. Todith must have had an exciting time when Eilian first came under his command. The poor guy. He probably had nightmares thinking about having to tell Thranduil that his baby boy Eilian had jumped into trouble and Todith had been unable to grab him by the scruff of the neck and drag him out again.

Fadesintothewest · 14 December 2003 · Chapter 5: First Battles

Tinár is certainly going to be a pain in Legolas' behind. At least he has Beliond as someone he can count on. It seems that Legolas' is understanding this. It's funny, I was almost expecting Legolas to be a little bit more like Eilian, but Legolas will be of course, Legolas! I like the relationship that is developing between Eilian and Galelas, I only hope Legolas does not become jealous. But it's a great realthionship for Eilian, it seems it's going to help him better understand himself!

Author's reply

There is only one Eilian, and a good thing by Thranduil's reckoning. Tinar is probably a pain wherever he goes, but he is certainly disturbed by Legolas's presence. Legolas is going to have to exercise whatever maturity he's managed to develop to keep from reacting to the jerk. And I thought it would be good for Eilian to take care of some other folks. It will help him feel better.

meckinock · 13 December 2003 · Chapter 5: First Battles

Fantastic battle sequence! I think I'm going to have nightmares. Beliond is turning out to be such a splendidly complex and mature character. He corrects Legolas when he thinks it's necessary but stands up for him when it's the right thing to do. Way to put Tinar in his place! It was nice of Beliond to share a quiet moment with Legolas later and fix his rune, but overall, Legolas ought to be grateful he's got someone around who's not afraid to kick him in the posterior when the occasion warrants! Poetic justice for Eilian- what goes around truly does come around. Now that he's the one responsible for other's lives, it would serve him right to get a frightening young warrior under his command who behaves just the way he did!

Author's reply

I'm so glad the battle sequence came off OK. I find them hard to do, mostly because there are only so many ways you can say "and then he put an arrow in the spider's eye" before it gets boring. So I try to concentrate on my characters' reactions instead. And thank you for your comments on Beliond. He's getting a good sense of what Legolas can and can't do already, which might help the kid stay alive long enough to learn. Eilian is sort of getting what he deserves, isn't he? ;-)

Dot · 13 December 2003 · Chapter 5: First Battles

Ooh, excitement all round. As much as I enjoyed watching Legolas’ first real battle and the way he deals with his actions and experience, I think what was really interesting about this chapter was the reactions of those around him. I felt I was getting to know them but it’s only in pressurised situations that we get a deeper glimpse of their personalities. Todith is clearly scarred by his experiences with Eilian! I felt quite badly for Legolas, particularly as he didn’t realise at first why Todith seemed to presume he might act irrationally. It looks like he’ll always have to try to prove that he’s his own person. I really like Todith and at least he admitted his mistake, but I suppose as such an experienced captain he should have known better. Just how badly did Eilian scare him?! Now, what is Tinar’s problem?! Seems like he’s the one who should be paying attention to what’s going on around him and less to what Legolas is doing. O.k., you have me totally intrigued by Beliond! He’s really growing on me. And you were worried you wouldn’t be able to redeem him! There was obviously more to his over-reaction to the spider incident than he’s saying. Who was killed, then? Or am I presuming too much?! I don’t know why I’m even asking – you’re hardly going to tell me….!! I loved the scene between him and Legolas when he apologises and praises his courage and behaviour during the fight. I almost wish that Legolas didn’t realise that he had Eilian’s rune of protection because it means that he will worry about his brother, but at the same time I’m glad he knows how valuable his gift is. It’s almost funny that both Todith and Beliond seem utterly relieved that Legolas handled himself well against the spiders – so I suppose ultimately it was probably good for him that the battle was so soon for him as they might worry less about his abilities now. Oh, and the whole description of the spiders was just horribly vivid! Great writing, but a bit too great – I hate spiders with a passion and am afraid I’ll never get those images out of my head!! Eilian thinks about his father a lot, doesn’t he? This particular assignment seems to be quite good for him. Obviously in the southern patrol they wouldn’t have had new warriors so he seems to be learning a lot from watching Galelas, especially in realising why his captains reacted as they did to his own behaviour. It probably helps that his young recruit isn’t Legolas or even Annael, but someone to whom he has no attachment so that he has an objective view. It’s fascinating to watch him in this position. Before I forget – thank you so much for directing me to “Eilian’s Begetting Day”. I found it and was completely thrilled. She really did your characters justice and it was such a treat!:)

Author's reply

Thank you so much for saying that those other characters were interesting! I never get inside their heads, so I have to hint at what's on their minds and I'm not always sure I'm clear. But, of course, a little mystery is good too. Like with Beliond. I think those responsible for commanding and guarding Legolas will gradually relax as he gets some experience. He's good at learning from his mistakes as well as his successes. I went over the battle scene a couple of times trying to make the spiders more disgusting. :-) I'm glad you liked Nilmandra's story. I asked her to put it up on Stories of Arda too because, to me, it feels like part of my cycle of stories.

Nilmandra · 13 December 2003 · Chapter 5: First Battles

I am really liking the Beliond and Legolas interaction. Beliond is suddenly seeing his young charge as a person, and his concern seemed to be more than just fear of what he would tell the king if something happened. Legolas is already glad for Beliond's presence, and if he will start to thind of Beliond as an ally, someone good to have next to him in battle, they will get along so much better. And my curiosity about Beliond grows. Hints of a wife and marriage that perhaps didn't go as planned, of a battle whose stain cannot be washed away from his mind, acknowledgement that courage and skill are sometimes not enough. I have my ideas....about a son lost, maybe, in a terrible battle - and a wife who cannot forgive him for it? :p And that is just one of the scenarios running through my mind! I also liked that although Legolas did not see the spider above him and was chastized for it, he did see the one bothering Tynd and shot well to protect him. He did do well, he will never forget to look up again, and he will do better next time. One can really see the difference in Legolas from Eilian here.

Author's reply

I think Beliond himself was probably surprised by how strongly he reacted to Legolas being in danger. These two are not out of the woods yet, but they are making progress. And Legolas did so well in his first battle. He was nervous as any sane person would be, but he also outfaced his nervousness and fought well. And he's not afraid to admit he made a mistake, which many people have trouble doing!

The Karenator · 13 December 2003 · Chapter 5: First Battles

What a great battle with the nasty spiders. I liked that Legolas was slightly nervous...it was his first battle, after all. When I read Todith's admonishments to him to keep the game plan, I did have flashes of Eilian. Todith's experiences with the king's sons...or at least, one of them...had apparently made him a bit wary. Legolas handled himself well even if he did lose focus of what was going on above him. Tinar is such a hoot! Everything is about him. Legolas competing with him! I was glad that Beliond stepped in to put the braggart in his place. If anyone can, I think it might our good, but sharped tongue Beliond. It was interesting what he said about young warriors and that skill and courage are often not enough. And his comment about never being able to wipe away the stains of battle entirely. More clues, Lady Daw? I hope so because my mind was racing with possibilities. No matter what Beliond's story is, I think he's seen too much battle and suffered too much heartache. Makes me wanna bake him cookies or something. It was also interesting that Legolas did not realize until Beliond pointed it out that his rune was not new...and 'then' Legolas realized it had been Eilian's. Of course, now Legolas is even more worried about Eilian. I like the changing dynamics between Legolas and Beliond and the progress they've made. I always love a look at what Eilian's up to. 'His' rune brought some nice revelations, too. And Galelas...he's trying so hard. I just don't feel the arrogance of his brother in him. The picture I get of him is that he will never feel good enough for the standards his father and brother have set...and probably 'will never' meet them, since Tinar is the favored son. But then, his actions gave Eilian a good look at himself as a impetuous young warrior. "Young warriors are frightening creatures"...I think this was a 'light bulb' moment for our fair dark haired prince. No matter what path he has walked to get to where he is, he's such a good brother, a good warrior and though Thranduil might, at times, ask for the top ten reasons why...he's a good son. Wonderful chapter, Daw. I look forward to more. Karen

Author's reply

I thought Legolas did well for his first battle, but I didn't think it would be natural for him not to be nervous. And your assessment of Tinar is right on: it's all about him! My guess is that your guess about Beliond is probably accurate. I think we'll hear more of his story when he runs into someone who has known him for a long time. Not the next chapter, but soon! You're also sharp about Galelas, I think. In some ways, being away from home is probably freeing for him. He no longer has to listen to his parents talking about Tinar. I'm afraid Thranduil will not be pleased with Eilian in the next chapter (or Ithilden either, for that matter, but that's another story).

LOTRFaith · 13 December 2003 · Chapter 5: First Battles

Well;-) Legolas finally realizes whose rune it is. I feel that Legolas gave Beliond a rather large scare. Makes me wonder what happened to him in the past that he is today. Speaking of scaring. I think Galelas scared a bit out of Eilian. I would hate to see someone die under my charge. Though I can't really relate to what Eilian is probably feeling, I can certainly understand that a dark shadow has been cast quite thickly over him. Poor elf. :-) Namaaaire! LOTRFaith

Author's reply

Eilian is gettig better though. His moments of darkness are getting fewer and father between. Galelas did scare him though. He hasn't worked with such green warriors in a long time. I am planning to tell a little about Beliond's past if I can. :-)

ANA · 13 December 2003 · Chapter 5: First Battles

Another great chapter! I very much like your action scenes - excitement and pace without too much gore, though the spiders were, well, yucky! Beliond is getting to be very likable, though I never disliked him even when he first appeared as his grumpy and sardonic self. He's getting a bit protective of Legolas, isn't he? Not just of physical dangers, but verbal ones as well. I am looking forward to your further development of the relationship between Legolas and Beliond. And there's Eilian getting a taste of his own medicine, praying that his little brother would not take after his recklessness. What a hoot! I am always telling my daughter that I hope someday she gets a daughter just like her as kids will never know how aggravating they can be until they have aggravating children of their own. Hope you post again soon!

Author's reply

If the spiders were yucky, then I succeeded. I think their yuck value is their main threat to armed warriors. They are less dangerous that Orcs but are awfully repulsive. And Beliond seems to be softening up! He and Legolas still have some rough moments ahead, but they're gradually getting to know and respect one another more. You are evil to your daughter! LOL What a fate. The worst thing is hearing your parents' words come out of your own mouth.

tigerlily713 · 13 December 2003 · Chapter 5: First Battles

Lovely chapter. Both of your battle scenes, the spiders and the warg, were done beautifully. The action was clear and consise, without being overdrawn or tedious. The emotions and thoughts of your characters were also done brilliantly. I love how Legolas caught on so quickly regarding his captain's fear that he would act just like Eilian. Wonerfully done; I eagerly await your next update! ~Lily

Author's reply

Thank you, Lily. I have trouble writing battle scenes, because, in truth, I think they're boring. On the extended TTT DVD, PJ says that he found that in battle scenes, he had to keep his focus on his main characters and what they were experiencing, and I think that's what I try to do. What matters is how the characters experience the battle, not the battle itself.

Jay of Lasgalen · 13 December 2003 · Chapter 5: First Battles

The spider battle was well described - I wonder if Legolas realises the narrow escape he had? The others were right, he should be been paying more attention! And the least he could do is to say 'thank you' to Beliond. I also liked the warg attack - especially Eilian's words to poor Galelas! At least he recognised the irony, and saw himself when younger. No Thranduil this chapter :( I wonder if Beliond will send a report about the spider fight and its outcome? It would be enough to give him a heart attack! Jay

Author's reply

I'm glad the battle scene read well. I have trouble writing them and I had to go back over this one several times. I missed Thranduil too. Having my characters scattered all over the place makes it hard to keep up with all of them!

Wow! What a chapter!!! The excitement of battle, Spiders, Wargs, and mystery... Okay, okay, I'll bite. What is Beliond's story? You have been baiting your trap for several chapters now. First the hint about a wife in an earlier chapter, then this softening toward Legolas as he tried to clean his arrows and the conversation about that, then Beliond telling the young rookie that courage and skill were not always enough. Is he talking about himself when he was younger, or does (or did) Beliond once have a family and he is speaking from past experience, past regrets? I'm beginning to get the hots for Legolas' keeper! So, Daw, what does Legolas' guardian look like (you once sent me a picture of what you thought Eilian might look like, remember?). Mysterious men, er, Elves, definitely whet my appetite. Legolas is almost as curious about his keeper as I am at this point, so what gives with Beliond? Or are you going to continue your torture??? (Is that evil laughter I hear over the Internet?) It was particularly touching when Legolas realizes that his rune was Eilian's before him. Give me more, more, more of Legolas and his keeper! Was so good to catch up with Eilian. I see hero worship in Galelas' eyes. He is trying very hard to be all that Eilian thinks he should be. I find it amusing that Eilian's eyes are finally being opened to how he was as a young, adventuresome warrior in the eyes of his own captain and keeper. Now he has his hands full with the same thing. Turnabout is fair play and a great source of learning. This is a terrific story! Can't wait for the next chapter. Be kind, Daw, and post soon. Please? BG

Author's reply

I hadn't actually thought much about what Beliond looks like! That's probably bad. I should be describing more maybe. Nilmandra also liked Legolas and Beliond together so I will probably be doing more of that. That's exactly how I see Galelas. He finally has a chance to be on his own and impress someone without Tinar around. And Eilian is getting a dose of his own medicine. LOL

So Legolas is making his hole into the small society of the patrol :) Good for him. I find Sólith increasingly exasperating. I think I just want to beat some sense into him. Though I can see his point of view, I don’t think he will be able to accomplish anything if he is killed by spiders or orcs, because he was living too far to be protected by the patrols. :( His notion of the world took a sudden lurch. ROTFLOL Centuries old and still so naïve where women are concerned :D I notice that Legolas hasn’t given any rune of protection to Eilian ;) An oversight on his part, I suppose :P ~Arbelethiel

Author's reply

Legolas has not yet figured out that the rune Eilian gave him came from his own neck. I'm working on that little oversight right now. Ithilden cracked me up too. He's so honorable himself, and has such an idealized view of women, that it never occurred to him they might be peeking at the swimming hole. I love the guy!

Eredadain · 11 December 2003 · Chapter 3: A First Patrol

I've read chapters 1 - 3 and am looking forward to more. It's gratifying to see Legolas develope, both as a warrior and as a "person". Daw does a great job fleshing out his LOTR persona, and I think she adds some critical (and needed) depth to his character. Beliond is a pain, but critical to L's growth. Will they have a knock down drag out at some point?

Author's reply

Thank you for the kind words, Eredadain! I cannot imagine writing a knock down drag out between Legolas and his keeper. Thranduil would kill him. Or maybe kill both of them. I'm in the process of writing some slow softening in their relationship. It's the weekend now and I have no more students to pain me, so I can write! Are you going to post?

Tapetum Lucidum · 10 December 2003 · Chapter 4: News from Home

I am glad my slow review was well timed. Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow... Thranduil sure has a soft spot. If my parents had ever written anything so sweet to me I am sure I would be in tears as well. Legolas' attempt at laundry was very amusing. I was wondering if he would have that problem since Eilian also seems to think muddy clothes are disposable. Beliond's attempt to help him was cute and the reaction of the warriors was accurate - pounce on any weakness and tease one another mercilessly. Um, could Tinar be any more clueless. Can you imagine being married to him for eternity. Poor elleth! He better watch out or she might have to turn his urine blue. Solith is a thorn in everyone's side. Yes, he is trying to save the forest, that is wonderful, but Thranduil's resources are not unlimited. I hope they can figure out a good place to move. Is that near Legolas' or Eilian's patrol? I have lost my may and since I am a woman, I will ask for directions. Ithilden's time with Sinnarn was very sweet. It is very exciting to spend fun time with Ada. Alfirin and the commander's discussion about spying on members of the opposite sex was great! I find it hilarious that the straight laced Ithilden never realized that the elves were spied on as well. I don' think he wants to know if Eilian was ever at the elleth side of the pool. Ignorance is bliss. It must be hard for the two eldest elves in the family to knowingly send the younger pair into danger. I don't think I could do it. I think I know what Ithilden wants to send. Apparently these elves are a superstitious lot. Wargs and spiders? shudder... I think I will stay home, especially without my map. I am glad to see Galelas seems to have shaped up nicely, in spite of his older brother's influence. Being the second born is rarely easy and I think Eilian may have a few things in common with him. Thranduil's scolding of Eilian seemed appropriate for the circumstances. It will be uncomfortable until they clear the air. I hope nothing bad happens until then. Of course, where would the fun be in that? Looking forward to meeting some spiders. Tapetum

Author's reply

Tinar's betrothed must be nuts. I haven't done anything to picture her in my mind except conclude that she admires him without question. It's the only thing he would accept. Maybe he'll learn to give a little if she really needs something. The settlement elves are not going to be near either Eilian or Legolas in this story, which is probably a good thing. I don't think Solith and Eilian are soul mates. I am getting fonder and fonder of Ithilden and I always liked him because he was so competent. I want him guarding my part of the world. But he is hilarious and touching with his wife and child.

Brenda G. · 10 December 2003 · Chapter 4: News from Home

My favorite chapter so far... Longing and laughter and a peek into the heart of each character completely emersed me into the richness of the lives you have created on each page. We see Legolas, a fierce Woodland-warrior-wanna-be blinking back tears he had not expected to shed upon reading his first letter from his adar. The love and longing in Thranduil's letter to his youngest was as tender and poignant as anything we have ever seen from the Mirkwood King in those rare moments when we are allowed glimpses past his stern exterior. I found Legolas' first brush with laundry quite humorous. Nana Beliond? I crowed with laughter over that one and then smiled broadly when Legolas realized that his "keeper" indeed possessed the capacity to make a joke. As I said last review, I am definitely warning to Beliond, and I believe that Legolas is finally also beginning to see light at the end of this dismal tunnel. I do hope that in time Beliond will come to consider his charge more than just duty to his King. I foresee many merry adventures ahead for this odd couple. It was refreshing to visit with little Sinnarn again, more and more like his Uncle Eilian as the days unfold. Ithilden and Alfirin make me smile. Their relationship, even after 10 years of marriage, seems fresh and evergreen - and still able to surprise the King's eldest son. I found it hilarious that the thought of maidens spying on the males, rather than the other way around, was such an unexpected discovery by Ithilden, so much older and more mature and knowledgeable than his centuries younger wife. Alfirin is just a precious, precious jewel to all who know her and absolutely perfect in her role of wife, mother, lover and friend. I'm glad Thranduil was firm, even impatient, with the settlement Elves. I felt he made it quite clear that he expected them to settle in the areas he considered appropriate, but rather than making it an order on the spot, he has given them time and space to come to that decision on their own. They do have a duty to defy Shadow, as all Elves do, but also to work in unison with their King in achieving that end. Better a rap on the knuckles by their King, than an all out slaughter of the settlement occupants by the enemy to prove who's right or wrong. Eilian... So good to visit with him again, and I have hope that his Shadow sickness is lifting somewhat. The Warg insertion was intriguing. I believe Eilian is right about where the Warg howls, the Orcs prowls. And with new spider colonies newly discovered, I see bows being tweaked and arrows fletched for upcoming chapters. When Eilian opened Ithilden's package and pulled out yet another rune necklace, I laughed along with him. How loved this Elf is! Surely, despite his many exasperations with family, Eilian knows this. I look forward to his continuing healing and eventual complete restoration. My heart goes out to Galelas, trying to grow up in the shadow of his older and more established brother, but he is on the right path and in good company to steer him clear of the obvious pitfalls that Tinar blindly ignores. Tinar's day is coming, but also (I hope) is Galelas'. I also had to chuckle at Eilian's attitude that he would write to his father when he was a little more repentant than currently. Same ole Eilian! What a rich feast you have laid before us, and my appetite is already sharply whetted for Chapter 5 (which, dare I hope, will soon make its appearance). You're my hero.

Author's reply

Wow, what a great review. I considered calling this chapter "Domestic Interlude" because it was all about people's home lives and relations with their families, even when they were far from home. Oh, and domestic chores like laundry too. I like the thought that Thranduil's sons are all loved because they are dear to me, I have to admit. And Eilian is getting better. He's in a happier part of the forest and his family (and Maltanaur) are showing their love for him, even though his father is also driving him crazy. I'm thinking he can help Galelas and that might help him too. I have a back story written for Beliond and just have to figure out how to work it in a little. I dropped a couple of hints in this chapter, but it's harder to figure out how to make things explicit. Thank you for taking the time to do this.

Lera · 9 December 2003 · Chapter 4: News from Home

That was a fun chapter, I got to talk, er, eavsdrop on everybody! I love the fact that although Legolas might not know how to do every household chore, it never occurrs to him that it's beneath him. Tinar seems like the kind of guy who might think it's beneath him. I doubt he'd lift a finger to do his laundry if he were at home! How did he get a girl? Maybe he's handsome or something. Personally I'd rather not get married at all! Beliond obviously has a story. Are you gonna show it to us? Please? I'm excited to see Legolas in battle. Beliond better watch his own back(arm) with Tinar in the patrol. Thranduil's scenes really touched me. I was very proud of him, he didn't totally freak out about Legolas being in danger of spiders. I loved seeing Ithildien with his family. It was so sweet seeing him teach his son to do basic kid things, like swimming. Maybe he should teach him to do laundry! I saw a little cousin over thanksgiving who I haven't seen in forever, and I was like, "That is totally how I picture Sinnarn." It was weird. Ithildien seems like a wonderful Ada. And Alfirin seems like a wonderful mother. I like seeing parent child relationships where the parent adores the child and spends lots of fun time with him or her, but still is respected by the child. Those seem to be the happiest relationships. I also love how Ithildien and Alfirin are still so hot on fire in love with each other. I look forward to seeing if a bit of a relationship developes between Eilien and Galelas. Poor kid doesn't seem to have the greatest dad and brother. Ciao.

Author's reply

Somebody needs to warn Tinar's girlfriend right now! I think I will write her a letter. :-) And Legolas was indeed fine with doing his laundry. He just didn't know how. I'm going to eventually tell you a little more about Beliond. At least I plan to, if I can figure out how to let his story come out naturally. I laughed at the idea that someone is going around seeing Sinnarn in real life. You must have an active little cousin.

kalile · 9 December 2003 · Chapter 4: News from Home

There was a time when I first started reading your work when I would skip over the parts that dealt with Eilian or Ithilden or [insert name of OCC here] in favor of reading about Legolas and Thranduil. Now, however, I find these character incredibly fun to read and so real that if I had no background on Tolkien's books coming into your series I could have sworn they were in there. Anyhoo, I find myself constantly cheering for a happy Eilian (all he needs now is for Legolas to give back his old rune of protection and he's good to go.)And Ithilden (who I think reminds me too much of my own older brother) is starting to grow on me too. It's good to see his tender side in his interactions with his family and that he isn't always "Thranduil #2" in his interactions with Eilian. I'm curious, does Ithilden mean anything in Elvish or did you just pick it because it sounded nice? I remember reading something that explained Eilian meant "sky bridge" and was just curious.

Author's reply

I smiled from ear to ear when I read your comments on my OCs. They seem real (and canonical) to me now too. I need to get over myself, but I do love these pretend people I made up. I made up the name "Ithilden" but I used the Sindarin word "ithil," which means "moon," to do it. Then I added a common ending. "Eilian" means "sky bridge" or "rainbow," as you say, and, of course, "Legolas" means "green leaf." In my happy imagination, their names come from the circumstances in which each of them was conceived. In other words, Elves do it out of doors.

meckinock · 9 December 2003 · Chapter 4: News from Home

Grand slam! Where to start? Eilian, of course. Thranduil is just such a wonderfully overbearing father - first indignant that Eilian overreached his authority, then deciding on second thought maybe he didn't comport himself so badly after all, and then in the end not being able to resist chiding him about it in his letter. Eilian is obviously accustomed to this behavior, makes mental note to appease his father when the mood strikes him...Eilian's reaction to the healthy trees was touching. Sometimes we don't realize how much we need a vacation until we're on the beach, smelling the salt air. Ithilden and his wife were just delightful. Lovely to see this stern, overburdened warrior being gently teased, and cuch a delightful scene with his son at the swimming hole. I am still intrigued by Beliond and can't wait to find out what his story is. I am not surprised that he has a hidden sense of humor, you can't be around as long as he has without developing one or going mad, I'm sure!

Do I detect some Eilian love growing here? He is a charming character and I can't believe I once considered killing him off. Thank god, I came to my senses and changed *that* plot element. One of the things that's interesting to me about both Eilian and Ithilden is that they are willing to be at odds with Thranduil, although they plainly love him and feel loved in return. They are adult enough to know that they are separate people. Legolas is just figuring that out. Ithilden's family is such a sweet element in his life. The stars shone on him with them.

Great chapter! I really loved Legolas washing his clothes. And you're right, it's not just the guys who can't do it. I'm a fifteen year old girl and completely clueless as to the ways of laundry. LOL! Eilian and all his protection. It's really nice that Ithilden sent him a rune. I thought it was so sweet. I love the family scenes, too. I was just wondering, when Eilian was captain of the Home Guard for awhile in One Year in Mirkwood, was Maltanaur around. I just can't seem to find him mentioned and wondered if he stayed in the south? Awesome job, please update soon! Laura

Oh my goodness, Laura. I think you're right. Maltanaur must have stayed in the south! Eilian was home with an injury, so at first he didn't need Maltanaur's protection and then he just stayed where he was. :-) I think what really is helping Eilian right now isn't the runes themselves but the fact that he knows that all these people love him and want him to be protected. He needs that!

Oh, such a great chapter – I really enjoyed that! That laundry scene was priceless. Just the image of him enthusiastically swishing his clothes around in the water and then trying to copy everyone else while pretending to know what he was doing… LOL! If Beliond had realised, he could have had great fun concocting ways of doing laundry and poor Legolas would probably have imitated him… And Tinar is betrothed! “Gewiel is timid and needs guidance” *snigger* I’d love to know how she ended up with him. Nope, I just can’t picture it… Oh, and Beliond is being very mysterious. Has he a story, eh? It’s really great to see him a bit more lighthearted for a change – and it looks like he’s feeling all parental towards Legolas despite himself! I was so delighted you let everyone have an appearance in this chapter. It seems to be the same old story for Thranduil back at the palace. Solith is as irritating as ever, I see. No, I do see his point about holding his ground against the shadow but did he learn anything from nearly losing his home and family? Apparently not. Y’know, I’m really going to have to get myself a map of Mirkwood ‘cos I’m a little lost. Solith and co. aren’t going to end up anywhere near Eilian’s patrol, are they???! I just love Ithilden as ada! He’s so different when he’s with his family – Alfirin and Sinnarn really bring out the softer side of him. It was so funny that he genuinely never realised that the maidens just might tend to spy on the males too. Alfirin can be mischievous, can’t she? Like his father, Ithilden does deserve more of these family moments. Ooh, I wonder what Thranduil was like in happier times – did his wife have the same effect on him as Alfirin does on Ithilden… Just thought I’d wonder aloud, it’s not a story request or anything….;) Yikes, spiders. That’s incredibly close, isn’t it, if the Home Guard found them. And now it looks as though Legolas will encounter some soon. So much for safe patrols. Things don’t bode well for Mirkwood. Still, Annael obviously came through his encounter safely and if Legolas can too, maybe his father and brothers will feel less protective of him. Nah, that’ll never happen…! I’m really beginning to like Galelas in this story! It seems like he’s really learned a lot about himself. Actually, Eilian’s managing quite well, if he prevented himself from chasing the warg. Giving him others to protect was a good idea. I cringed, though, at Thranduil’s letter! It started off so beautifully but he just couldn’t help himself! It’s quite funny how they manage to annoy each other even across great distances. Another rune of protection! If nothing else, it should show him that his family care… Is Legolas the only one who hasn’t realised where his rune came from?! It’s hilarious, though – if Eilian gets any more he’ll be so weighed down by them that he won’t be able to go into battle at all…so I suppose he’d be protected. Hmmn.

Of course Beliond has a story! It's all right here in my notes. I'll hold them up to the screen so you can see....So what do you think? I love the idea of Beliond deliberately misleading Legolas about the laundry. Too bad I didn't think of that! Eilian is north of the Forest River right now, so Solith and his merry band are not talking about being anywhere near him. For the time being, Solith is just hanging around Thranduil's stronghold waiting for the king to see reason. It's been tricky to bring everyone in in this story because they are so scattered. I still feel like I'm neglecting everyone but Legolas. The only glimpse I have of my Thranduil with the wife I gave him was written not by me, but by Nilmandra. She wrote me a birthday fic called "Eilian's Begetting Day" in which Eilian is 20 (so about 8 in human terms). Thranduil and his wife go off and dance naked in the rain. Sigh. It's in a folder at Royal Mirkwood Home For Wayward Elves. If you can't get to it there, I can send you the file. I was glad to be able to write the little glimpse of Annael.

Hmm. I just read the chapter again, and I'm wondering about Beliond. His comments about marriage, that it's not all as expected, and also his extreme reluctance to look after 'the young'. Are there unhappy memories in his past? He's growing on me, though, and I'm glad Legolas is also beginning to like him more. Jay

Clever cogs, Jay!

I did like the image of Legolas being homesick - yes, he had longed to be away from home, but found he missed it. But wargs AND spiders? Who do we need to fear for most? Eilian or Legolas? Or do you have plans for them both? I loved the bit about swimming - poor Ithilden, confessing like that only to find the maidens do it as well! Poor dear, he has no idea how hot blooded some females can be when faced with luscious elves, does he? :) Jay

No, he doesn't, Jay, and we're going to shelter him from that knowledge, poor thing. I have plans for both of the Thranduilion brothers actually, but spider hunting is next on the agenda. Our new warrior is going to get a taste of battle. :-( Author Reply: No, he doesn't, Jay, and we're going to shelter him from that knowledge, poor thing. Well, I am glad to see Beliond lightening up;-) Everyone needs a sense of humor and I am glad that he indeed does have one:-) I liked the part where Legolas was washing his clothes. I personally think that every male should learn how to wash his own clothes. It somehow gives a further apprectiation to females I think:-) I laughed when Eilian recieved the package from Ithilden. That was cute. I got the thought that Eilian thought that his giving of his medallion to Legolas wouldn't be noticed, quite the opposite it seems. :-) Namaarie! LOTRFaith

You're right. Eilian didn't think anyone would notice, but really there's only one person on whom it hasn't dawned that Eilian gave his rune away. I think that if Thranduil had had a daughter, she too might have missed learning to do laundry. Actually, there were lots of folks, both male and female, staring blankly at those washing machines in the dorm when I first started college. The problem with lots of males is that they feel entitled to forget how to use the dang things once they are living with a woman!

Jebb · 9 December 2003 · Chapter 4: News from Home

This was so lovely Legolas learning to do his own laundry and discovering his minder is not as bad as he first thought Ithilden and Alfirin and the swimming this was so funny especially when Ithilden didn't dress andquicker than usual! Eilian who trys so hard and still manages to annoy Thranduil even when he is leagues away! At least the Wargs will keep him busy and Ithilden sending him the good luck charm is he going to need so many? And the wonderful letters from home so full of love and despite his desire to keep his children safe Thranduil doing the right thing So many great lines and ideas this was so enjoyable

You make me feel very appreciated because you name all the scenes I loved writing! I don't know why it is that Eilian just can't seem to do the right thing where his father is concerned. It's clear that his family loves him. They keep sending him jewelry after all!!!
