We did stop and ask directions, and the fellow said he’d go one better and show us the way himself, though I wouldn’t trust him any further than I could paddle a boat
We all badly need a wash, even Mr. Frodo. I know, you always say Ponies sweat, gardeners perspire, and gentlehobbits sort of glow but to tell the truth, even gentlehobbits can be in need of a bath sometimes, though it would never do to say so.
Those were the parts that were funny to me just now, the first more.
Author's reply
"even gentlehobbits can be in need of a bath sometimes..." One does wonder what the working hobbits really think of the gentry (who can better afford to make mistakes) sometimes.
Thanks so much for reading and pausing to share your thoughts!

· Chapter 2: Book II
They had a grand moot today with all the visitors {Sam calling it a moot!}
Master Peregrin Took wants a good deal of looking after, I'm afraid. Do you know how you taught me never to chuck things down a well? Seems as if he don't have enough sense to stuff a turnip
My favorite parts from this chapter.
Sam doesn’t mention Boromir tossing the pebble into the lake, but maybe he doesn’t know, and the Gaffer wouldn’t care anyway.
Author's reply
I love it when people tell me their favorite parts.
Ah yes, the pebble in the lake. Bill the Pony certainly noticed. I hadn't thought about Sam... he was rather preoccupied by the thought of parting with Bill at the time, I think.
Thanks!

These letters are so much fun. My mum used to quote that saying at me too. I am glad that Sam got to use his rope. I always think that the stuff PJ has them using in the film is a trifle thin even for real elven rope.
Author's reply
Yes, funny how those old sayings stick with us.
That rope *did* look awfully thin. I should think it would be hard to get a grasp.
Thanks!

These are good fun, Lin :-) I like how he keeps talking about taters. I loved the barrow-wight - a fellow that stole the shirts off our backs! LOL
I hope you finish out the trip :-)
Author's reply
LOL, working on it. Also got Bill's trip to finish. Whew!

This is so charming--I love it!
My favorite line, which made me laugh out loud: "They badly need a good gardener here, but I don’t think the wages would suit." :D
Author's reply
I do so love it when people quote their favourite lines!
Thanks!

*snerk* I do love Sam's style in this, LOL! The bit about asking directions was hysterical!
Well, we do know Sam will get his look at an oliphaunt soon enough!
Author's reply
LOL, ain't it the truth?

Big Folk and Oliphaunts--and they'll soon have their fill of both! Untrustworthy fellow indeed. And needing baths. Yes. Good thing Hamfast can't read anyway, I think.
Author's reply
LOL, I suppose he'd have to go down to the Ivy Bush and buy someone a beer in exchange for reading a letter to him. OTOH, considering the importance of gossip in the Shire, perhaps the reader would render the service for free!
"Reunion", eh? I thought I'd read that, but don't recall the details. (Of course, if I didn't leave feedback, then I probably didn't read it!) Will have to look it up again.

Oh, I'm so glad he realizes Mr. Frodo wants a good deal of looking after! Wonderful, Lindelea!
Author's reply
Thank you!
I've always seen Sam as having this basis of rock-solid good sense.

Okay--the Black Riders and Wights are "shady fellows" and Aragorn is "Grubby"? Now, that's a new one! How did I manage to miss this?

These letters are so dear! I especially love, " know, you always say Ponies sweat, gardeners perspire, and gentlehobbits sort of glow but to tell the truth, even gentlehobbits can be in need of a bath sometimes, though it would never do to say so." :)
Author's reply
Yes, a sort of variation on a genteel saying my mom used to quote from *her* mom. *g*

Oh this is a fun read for a Sunday evening. I had a choice - chores such as the ironing or catch up with the reading. Well no choice really was it especially with the temperature in my little bed-sit around the high 80's (31 degrees in modern money). When you tell me the temperature where you are has dropped 10 degrees the steam came out of my ears I was so jealous! You lucky person!
I liked the way you ended both chapters with Sam's nemesis - boats and water!
Author's reply
I am hot, sticky, and grumbly, sorry to say. Reading reviews is certainly cheering!
You know I hadn't noticed that coincidence! Fascinating!

LOL! Those letters are great!
I'd very much like to quote everything - but that would be boring ;-)
So, I've picked something out, as example:
Hobbits isn't the only folk what lives under the ground. Dwarves do as well, only their smials are a deal larger than Shire-folks'.
A deal larger? Haha! Your Sam is wonderful!
... and Mr. Frodo wants looking after, no doubt about it
Well, that's how Sam puts it. I think, Mr. Frodo would have much more liked to sneak away ;-)
Don't forget to mention the incident with Gollum and the taters: "You wouldn't believe it, Dad, but that sneaky Gollum creature doesn't know what taters are!"
I'm looking forward to reading more.
Author's reply
Ah, how I love it when you pick out examples! (I'm even trying to do that when I leave reviews, and it's harder than I thought!)
Ooo, good suggestion, Gollum and the taters... (making mental note)

Bravo!! MEWD, Lindelea!!
These are so casual . . . and yet, there is a tension to them as well. Wonderfully written :)
Author's reply
Thank you, you caught that! Sam doesn't want to worry his old dad, after all.

Samwise Gamgee, Master of Understatement! LOL! This is funny--I love the way he skirts around the "bad parts".
Author's reply
Thanks! He's got a way with words, he does.

*giggles* I do love these matter-of-fact letters!

"some shady characters who stole the shirts off our backs."
Wonderful.
"Cannot tell you where we are going but it is someplace with elves."
And that is all he needs to know!
Author's reply
LOL, that's right, and probably would be more meaningful than mentioning "Rivendell".
Thanks for stopping by!

Heh-heh. Clever and very uh...Sammy like. Here's my favorite quote-
"Seems clear to me they don’t have the sense to sew their valuables into their underwear as they ought."
I don't supose the Gaffer ever got these letters, did he?
Author's reply
Hmm. I don't know. Perhaps Sam posted them after the Battle of Bywater.

ROTFLOL! I especially loved the "afctnatly".
Author's reply
Funny thing is I have seen that spelling in old letters... as if the people got to the end and were just too tired of writing to put all the letters in... or something.

"Grubby is travelling partway with us."
A perfect start into a new day (or rather... afternoon)

I can see Sam writing these! It's perfect and I think this story will turn out to be quite a bit of fun. Can't wait for more.
Author's reply
Why, thank you! Appreciate the encouragement. I'm hoping more will come to me over the weekend.

You absolutely slay me. How do you come up with these wonderful ideas?
I loved Samwise's "voice," and his spelling. According to canon, as much as hobbits write letters to each other, I am sure that our hobbits would have at least tried to send letters home. Circumspect letters, but still, they surely would have tried. Of course, the Gaffer would have to have someone read him Sam's letters!
ANOTHER incredibly inventive and delightful Lindelea story.
Author's reply
Thank you. This was just an off-the-cuff remark during a silly phone call with Dana that I was going to let go, but she persuaded me to write it down, and the rest is history.
And my goodness, the high praise is simply wonderful, especially coming from one of my favourite authors!

Love it!!! I hope this is just the beginning of many missives from Sam (or from the others).
"Mr Frodo disappeared. Can’t say I blame him."
*snicker*
More! Soon!
Author's reply
Well, I hope to do also Book II, Book IV and Book VI from Sam. We'll see about the others.

Cute. A little confusing, but very funny once you think about it.
Author's reply
Ah. Glad the confusion cleared up for you. The worst response a humorous piece can get is head-scratching, "I don't get it..."
