Heehee... It's amazing what will come out of someone's mouth after too much alcohol. Nice to know Aragorn isn't immune...but yeah. Arwen's father and brothers definitely know where to find him... Thanks for writing!

It was so funny! I loved how you could be funny while maintaining the language of Tolkien. Usual humor fics seem to take liberty in language but this story was so well written. Aragorn was well in character. I always felt he was someone disciplined, grave and sensible. It was a delight to see Halbarad get under his skin. Could you write a story where Arwen comes to know of their plans? I can almost visualize an amused smile on her.
TheDreamer · 26 September 2012 · Chapter 1: Warm Beds and Warmer Heads
Oh my, poor Aragorn ;) Still, it's good that he has Halbarad with him in the wild. And juust great, the thing about "Halbarad the hopeless romanticer". Now I will never be able to let that one go!
Author's reply
I might just be abusing a literary trope, but whenever you get an absolutely serious warrior, it seems to me that they need someone a little more light-hearted to lift their spirits. Gandalf and Aragorn seem to do that for one another, but if Gandalf wasn't around, where could Aragorn turn? That's where Halbarad came in. So glad you enjoyed the hopeless romantic! Thanks so much!

Mwa ha ha ha! That was funny! I love Halbarad and how he teases Aragorn, who needs someone to help take his mind off all his responsibilities and worries. :)

In searching for good Halbarad stories, I am so pleased to have run across this absolute gem! What a fun vignette of Halbarad and Aragorn's friendship. The humor is sarcastic and caustic at times but underlying it is a wonderful sense that these two are deeply connected as friends and fellow warriors. And I love your Halbarad's irreverence. Aragorn needs a friend by his side to vex him just as much as he needs a friend to defend him and cheer him. I've always imagined Halbarad to be just that sort of friend. Very well done... I enjoyed it immensely.

OK, Now we're even, because I don't know how I managed to miss this one. I love the contrast between orderly, uptight Aragorn and flamboyant, irreverent Halbarad. Disembowling his packs full of festering waybread! Wiping the entrails carefully from his weapons LOL! What a great sparring match. Aragorn seems a little outclassed, if I must say so. But then again it's difficult to beat a sparring partner who knows no shame. I loved Aragorn's horror at Halbarad's threat to speak to his mother about Arwen, and Aragorn's admission that his two Mannish vices are pipe-weed and Butterbur's ale. This was delightful!

Thank you! Coming from one who has Halbarad down pat, I'm incredibly flattered, so thank you again! I realize now that Aragorn does indeed seem a bit out of his league, but I appreciate your making an excuse for me. ;) My thought at the time was that he had known Halbarad for far too long and Halbarad had something of a talent for wiggling under his skin, so Aragorn had more or less given up trying to combat it and was instead resigned to what was happening. I'm not sure if I agree with that anymore, but it was my thought at the time, for what it's worth. Thank you again!

Another Halbarad fic! woohoo!...you are right, there are far too few fics with Halbarad and imagine my immense delight when I came across yours. I could almost feel Halbarad smiling smugly at Aragorn beside the fire. Wonderful fic and do write more
Author's reply
Somehow I missed your review. I think my email is acting up and ate it. Sorry about that! Fortunately I checked in and saw it sitting here. Anyway, I agree that there are entirely too few Halbarad fics out there. Poor fellow didn't make the movies, so no one seems to know who he is. Though I sometimes wonder if that isn't a blessing in disguise. Ah well. Anyway, thank you for your comments and I'm glad you enjoyed!

Very nice. I was laughing a lot. The image of the Lothlorien scene was truely one to behold. I enjoyed this a lot. Great job!
Author's reply
You are very welcome, and I'm glad you liked the ideas the Rangers created for Lothlorien. I had quite a bit of fun with that myself.

That was nice, rather formal though, which is unlike you. Halbarad is such a great character, and I agree with your opinion on Bryn's writing. What an excelllent plan...I shall have to pass it on to my connections in Rivendell...wouldn't Lord Elrond be pleased to have such talk as gossip in his fair realm? Perhaps Halbarad could disguise himself as Aragorn, and therefore enfuriate the Elven Lord even more...I hope that updates will be coming soon? *Please say yes*. You left us at some terrible cliff hangers. Keep writing, and more specifically updating!
Author's reply
If you do pass that plan on to your contacts in Rivendell, try to keep my name out of it. Lord Elrond can go after Halbarad and Aragorn as much as he wants to, but I definitely don't want him coming after me! I'm trying to decide what you meant by "formal." Is it the tone of the piece or the way Aragorn gets indignant when Halbarad starts teasing him about rather indecent plans concerning Arwen? If it's the first, I don't think it's all that different from "Stone From Above" or "A Forgotten Casualty." But it is different from my longer pieces involving Aragorn. I think that came from my attempt to get across that a Ranger's life was no picnic before I let them relax a bit with the ale. If by "formal" you meant that Aragorn should have loosened up a bit, it's my opinion that he was fairly relaxed on most subjects with the exception of Arwen. He never talked about her to the Fellowship (except for once, and then only vaguely) and I think that's because he kept feelings that like too close to his heart. And of course his inability to be relaxed about such a topic is only going to fuel Halbarad's desire to tease him about. Ah well. Anyway, thanks so much for the review!

A truly charming tale, with great characterizations and humor. There's a touch of bittersweet sadness though, in that the romantic Halbarad won't live to see Aragorn and Arwen wed. How Aragorn must have regretted the loss of his loyal friend and kinsman at the Battle of Pelennor. Thank you for bringing both Aragorn and Halbarad to life.
Author's reply
You are very welcome, and I'm glad you liked the tale. I was thinking about that, actually, and was rather sad that Halbarad never got to see his friend finally married. I suppose Halbarad would respond by saying this makes the tale more dramatic, but you're right. It's still very bittersweet.

Brilliant, especially "I’m of half a mind to make this fire even larger by adding you to it, so I suggest you hold your tongue and be silent!" Well done
Author's reply
I'm glad you liked it! That line was one of several rather obscure allusions to the title of the fic and I'm rather fond of it. Thanks so much for taking the time to review!
Annis · 19 February 2004 · Chapter 1: Warm Beds and Warmer Heads
Wonderful! Very well done, especially with that "questionably attained ale" !!
Author's reply
It's not a male-bonding experience unless there's some ale to get it started. And thankfully, Halbarad is wise enough to realize this. Pass the drinks 'round again. They're on the house. Thanks for the review!

This is great! I love your Halbarad; you should write more stories involving him! I laughed my head off with this story, thanks for sharing it!
Author's reply
You are very welcome, and I'm glad you like Halbarad. Allow me to direct you to Bryn, who writes a wonderful version of Halbarad. I don't know if I'm going to indulge in Halbarad much more, but there are a few stories coming to mind.
French Pony · 19 February 2004 · Chapter 1: Warm Beds and Warmer Heads
A very sweet and charming story. Is nice to see Aragorn loosen up and let his metaphorical hair down. Also amusing to see his Elvish upbringing working against him. Given the Elvish distaste for smoking, what must it have been like when he brought that habit into Imladris? Ewwww. And the wonderful foolish romanticism of our two heroes! I like Halbarad's sense that all ought to work out in properly dramatic fashion. I can imagine that if he didn't have to be a ranger (that is, if the Numenoreans still lived in Numenor), he'd be the biggest fop Arda had ever seen.
Author's reply
Oh, you are evil. Now I've got this image of a horde of Rangers descending upon Rivendell for medical aid and then contaminating the fair air of Imladris with pipe-weed. Talk about a plot bunny. Not funny. Not funny at all. But I forgive you, if only for the image of Halbarad wandering around Numenor with a giant feather sticking out of his hat. I'm not sure why fop translated into that image, but it did. And for some reason, he's occasionally sporting a feather boa. Go figure. Anyway, I decided that someone in the Rangers should have a different perspective on romantic situations as well as a sense of the dramatic. And since Aragorn has always struck me as practical, pragmatic, and methodical, I gave that role to Halbarad. He's like the other half of the balancing act.
Lera · 19 February 2004 · Chapter 1: Warm Beds and Warmer Heads
That was hilarious! At first I couldn't even remember who Halbarad was, but I like him. It was good to see Aragorn before the Fellowship, doing ranger duties. So often all we hear about before that is his childhood in Rivendell or how he met Legolas. But he was a ranger for a long time, and I can imagine he had many nights around the fire. It's good he had a friend like Halbarad to bring him ale and tease him. Everybody needs a friend like that.
Author's reply
I wondered, actually, when I wrote this fic if many people would remember Halbarad. He's a rather obscure character, and I think he's got maybe a total of five lines in RotK (which is actually quite a few compared to Elladan and Elrohir, who between them have a grand total of one). But I've always enjoyed the thought of Halbarad as someone that Aragorn can relax around. And I'd be willing to bet that Halbarad was the one who introduced Aragorn to pipe-weed, too.
