Oh no! At least this time the elf is not under the rock. Very exciting stuff, and personally I would go for the Dwarf with the chisel theory of removing elves from trolls ,
great stuff

*Grin* ;) Yes, the chisel would be better than poor Elrohir turned to stone! I hope you like the rescue scene.

Oi! Another cliffie! :-P I hope that Legolas and Elrond will not have too much difficulty rescuing the twins and Estel - Legolas's poor head isn't really up to it. Elrond's going to have his hands full of difficult patients, in any case.
Author's reply
Legolas's head injury is the least of his problems when he goes into the cave - he has to confront a few nasty memories as well.
Besides dealing with injured sons, Elrond also finds he has a horse-stealing daughter in the next chapter.

I was amused that Elrond looked like Thranduil when he wanted Legolas to stay home and heal. I guess all fathers have the same look when their grown sons are being foolish.
It's not surprising that Legolas is still haunted by having to shoot his own warrior. It's a truly horrible thing.
Author's reply
I liked Elrond having the Thranduil look too - and Legolas didn't argue any more, did he?
I'm not sure that 'talking about it' too much is the best way to get over such an experience, but both Elrond and Thranduil have had to do terrible things in their time in battle, so they do understand.

Ah, I love how my Lord Elrond is constantly and gently persuading his elflings (and Estel) to sleep with his potions! *g* Not that I don't think he enjoys a little well-deserved revenge for them constantly scaring a thousand years off his life!:) Anyway, did a dance when I saw this story and "Memory..." updated this morning...you have been a busy little writer, haven't you? *3 cheers for jay!!!* But this chapter was great...after suffering knowing Legolas had been knocked into next week, I was quite relieved that his injuries were not as severe as imagination could make them. ;) I was very sad about Linhir, tho', and very glad one of those trolls got another well deserved arrow to the mouth, while the other turned to stone with the sun (but when he grabbed one of the twins...*shudder*... and turned to stone with a piece of his sleeve in his paw....scary!) And I thought they would never find Legolas....they needed our help, didn't they...we could find that elf in a heartbeat! *vbg* Wonderful stuff...update soon! Now on to "Memory..."
linda
Author's reply
I think I'm falling into the fanfiction trap of making Elrond too 'potion happy' - he's a responsible healer, and wouldn't drug for the sake of it. (Mind you, his sons and Legolas deserve it!)
Legolas is not going to bounce back from this immediately, so your imagination wasn't far out.

Oh that wonderful elven sleeping draught. I wish I had some when I get a migraine - I don't care how bitter it is
Another wonderfully exciting ch - I liked the bit about not getting stuck when the trolls turned to stone - painful!
Thanks
Rose
Author's reply
Sometimes that sleeping draught can have side effects, though - something I'm looking at in the next chapter of Memory of Darkness. I also need to think about what would have happened to Elrohir if he'd been caught as the sun came up!

Oh, Jay, what a chapter! I confess I hadn't considered the danger of being in a troll's grip when the sun came up, until just at that moment... how awful that would have been! They'd have had to chip him free... Ouch!
And considering everything else, I'm glad that didn't happen! Poor Linhir... and poor Legolas! His injuries sound quite nasty, and yet I think you described them very realistically. I absolutely LOVE what Elrond said as he examined him: “Oh, elfling, what have you done this time?” what a grand line, and its follow-up about only three people called him that: Thranduil, Glorfindel & Elrond... heh heh heh... ah the joys of eternal youth in the eyes of eternal elders!! :-)
Going to be a long recovery, I fear. Oh the angst, however will we bear it?? (heh... you know I love it!!)
Thanks for another fine chapter, nin mellon!
Author's reply
Thanks, Jasta! I think it would have been interesting to explore what would happen if Elrohir had been trapped by the troll, but I already had enough problems in this chapter. I think I've learnt my lesson, though, about killing elves we know and like - poor Linhir had a very brief entrance and exit!
Legolas's recovery will be the subject of the next chapter - soon.

You know who I feel sorry for? Elrond. He can't let any of them out of his sight for a second without having to stitch and medicate afterwards. And Legolas must indeed have a thick skull. I trust whatever is wrong is going to get better, given that Elrond felt no bumps or anything.

Poor Elrond, always on hand with his repair kit. Legolas will be fine eventually, but he's going to have a bit of a concussion for a while.

A terrific chapter, Jay! *sniff* Oh, Linhir! I am glad that the body count was only one and not three, though. A close call for Elrohir and Legolas.
Author's reply
I've made the mistake before of killing an elf I'd come to like during a story. So poor Linhir didn't get much introduction, or I wouldn't have been able to do it!
I think Legolas and Elrohir were both lucky.

· Chapter 4: Waiting
You're torturing him in two stories, Jay! Well, we could look at this in a positive light - you could treat it like a prisoner doing concurrent terms, vs consecutive terms. All punishment served at once and then he is free! No more torture!
Yeah, right, no chance of that. I really liked how the elves were into the battle. There had to be such a rush of adrenalin in bringing down these dangerous trolls, and in figuring out how to do it. Dangerous, though, as Linhir and Legolas learned. Legolas should be glad for the sleep, poor elfling.
Author's reply
Don't try to pretend that you don't like elf torture and hurt/comfort! Where's the fun in getting it all over quickly?
Of course, in this story the comfort part has to come from someone other than Thranduil - for now - but the trick with the trolls will be useful in the future!

Oh NO! Poor Legolas--he forgot to duck!!!
A very fine chapter in so many ways: not the least of which is the dawning of comprehension on Aragorn's part. I'm glad he figured it out (or had it explained to him in small short words... ) before Legolas got hurt by that Troll.... think of how silly he'd feel talking about "saving Legolas for Arwen" and Arwen taking his Human head off his shoulders...
I can't wait to see what happens next! I trust Legolas will be all right--but he's going to have one HECK of a headache!
Author's reply
Poor Aragorn is still a little unsure of himself where Arwen is concerned, but does now realise he'd got it wrong. Just as well, really, or he'd be jealous of the TLC Arwen is going to administer to Legolas. He's going to need it ;)

Clearly shadow has dampened Legolas's abilities some - nearly washed away in the river and now flattened by a troll! Jay, I hate to inform you of this, but the People for the Ethical Treatment of (fictional) Elves - otherwise known as Petfe - are looking for you.
Worse, I think Thranduil was with them.
Author's reply
Thranduil? (Jumps up and down in delight) Now there's an elf I'd like to meet! Oh. You mean he's after me because I do nasty things to his beloved son? I see. I'd better hide before he sees the final chapters of this story!
However, I could point PETfE in your direction after what you did to Elrohir! (And perhaps send Thranduil to Daw?)

I like the tie to the Hobbit. Legolas's account of his father's "stubbornness" had the ring of truth! But geez, you leave Legolas in kind of a bad place.

I figure Elladan and Elrohir would have been around somewhere during The Hobbit, even if we didn't see them. So they'd know all about the trolls.

A great chapter, Jay! But an evil cliffie. And I would argue that Thranduil was very much in the right to toss the dwarves in the dungeon, and he should not let anyone convince him otherwise. I hope to see more of this and Memory of Darkness soon. :-)

Oh, Thranduil was right to throw the dwarves in prison to start with, but he soon realised they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was just that Thorin annoyed him so much he was dammed if he let them go!

ummm, sorry!*deep breath* That was a terrific chapter. I liked the developing interaction between Legolas and Aragorn (poor jealous guy), and that little scene with them "inventing" terrors for Lasgalen....oooo, creepy. It must be a "guy thing" to try and think of worse things than orcs, and Nazgul, and giant spiders, and wargs, etc. (My son and his cousin do it often! ;) ) So they finally caught up with the trolls, and Legolas found a weak spot, and got KNOCKED INTO NEXT WEEK!!!! umm, sorry...update soon, please?...sanity at risk.. ;)

Poor Legolas - trouble does seem to follow him! I hadn't realized you had a new story going - do not forget that poor Legolas is actually still senseless in his earlier life, poor elfling.
I am looking forward to seeing them do a little troll hunting, and I would bet Legolas's and Elrohir's little adventure will be made known. I would not be surprised if somehow, Arwen and Aragorn reataliate too!

I'm relieved that the horse is OK. Elladan and Elrohir are wicked to tease Legolas about Arwen, and so is she! These friends are a lot of fun when you see them together.
So is the lost pack going to come back to haunt him somehow?
Author's reply
I think it would be logical for everyone to expect Legolas and Arwen to marry eventually - apart from them. So the twins have fun reminding them both about it.
Hmm, the lost pack - it does not reappear in the original story, but as I'm making several changes as I repost, it may! It would add to the angst level in Lasgalen, after all.

The main changes are in the way the characters speak - I got rid of contractions like "I'm" - and several scenes have been developed and expanded where they were too rushed before. The ending will be slightly different too. I'm glad you're reading and reviewing here!

Havens, you scared me! (I love it, Havens instead of Heavens, I guess). I figured Legolas was going to get banged and pummeled by floating logs and rocks and whatever, and just about die. But...NOT! Thankfully, the elf and the horse were none the worse for wear. :-) Good chapter, I love the idea of a troll hunt....just think of all the trouble those 4 can get into on a hunt like that! It boggles the mind! And Arwen...it would serve Legolas right if she planted her fist on his pretty nose! What was he thinking...or rather was this at Aragorn's expense, just to see his reaction? Great chapter - I was just getting ready to leave when I saw it flagged on my email. Terrific way to start the weekend! BTW, have a good one, Jay!

I could have had Legolas seriously injured by the flood, but this story is about the troll hunt. Besides, Nilmandra has aleady done it wonderfully to poor Elrohir in History Lessons. There will be plenty of action and angst, don't worry!
Legolas was teasing Aragorn, he'd noticed how smitten he was with Arwen. Legolas was just 'remembering' an idea that Thranduil, Elrond and Celebrian had once had - 'hey, wouldn't it be great if the kids got married when they're grown up?' ;)

Excellent! I especially enjoyed the bridge you described. Your story is easy to read, which not all stories are. (Some other stories I find quite confusing as to what is actually happening). I look forward to the next chapter!
Just a comment: I don't believe there were any giant moths in Tolkien, but
I'm no expert. Fire is well known for frightening animals away, so the only reason for not building a fire (that I can think of) would be to avoid being
seen by men.
Also, I had the impression Legolas was stronger than the horse, when he didn't care how hard he pulled on the mane and then hauled the horse sideways. My limited experience with horses is they can't be moved unless they want to.
Flowing water of great depth is always stronger than anyone can imagine.
I wouldn't be surprised if both the horse and Legolas were swept away.
Still, this doesn't detract from a really good story! Keep up the good work!
Author's reply
There's a chapter in The Hobbit ('Flies and Spiders') where the dwarves build a fire while travelling through Mirkwood. They could see 'hundreds and hundreds of eyes all round them', and 'moths, some nearly as big as your hand' attracted to the fire.
Pavisel is of course an elven horse, so he'd know what Legolas was trying to do, and would co-operate. That's my excuse, anyway!
Many thanks for the review, I'm so glad you like it!
