daw the minstrel · 16 December 2004 · Chapter 13: From Enmity to Friendship: Part 4 - Enlightenment

Nice conclusion to the set, LKK. Not a wasted word.

Author's reply

Thank you, daw. I know you're not a big fan of drabbles, so the fact that you read and liked the set means that much more to me. :) LKK

Jay of Lasgalen · 16 December 2004 · Chapter 13: From Enmity to Friendship: Part 4 - Enlightenment

This was a lovely series of drables, LKK - I liked seeing the gradual development of the friendship between Legolas and Gimli, and their differing perceptions of beauty. Very well done. Jay

Author's reply

Thanks, Jay. :) It was challenging yet fun to write four connected drabbles that showed a consistency and progression at the same time.

Eruwestial · 16 December 2004 · Chapter 13: From Enmity to Friendship: Part 4 - Enlightenment

Such a very nice ending to a lovely set. Thank you. I'd like to think that Gimli would reply in kind. Eruwestial

Author's reply

That's very kind of you, Eruwestial. I appreciate your warm comments throughout the cycle. You've been very supportive and that meant so much to me. :) LKK

JastaElf · 16 December 2004 · Chapter 13: From Enmity to Friendship: Part 4 - Enlightenment

Aww now, that was lovely! What a great way to finish off the cycle! Legolas has come around to friendship in its deepest sense at last, and learned something of himself in the bargain.... what a neat drabble! Thank you for sharing this delightful, insightful series with us!

Author's reply

Thank you, Jasta. It was fun to write this gap-filler series to (possibly) explain how Legolas changed his mind concerning Gimli. Many magical things must have happened during the Company's stay in Lothlorien. I'm glad you enjoyed my take on one of those things. LKK

Karri · 16 December 2004 · Chapter 13: From Enmity to Friendship: Part 4 - Enlightenment

That was beautiful, L. An outstanding conclusion to this series. :-)

Author's reply

Thank you, Karri. I'm glad the ending lived up to the series. Talk about pressure! LOL

JastaElf · 13 December 2004 · Chapter 12: From Enmity to Friendship: Part 3 - Searching

Oh, I just love these.... :-) You do such a beautiful job with these little gems of writing. I could never pack so much into so little a space. I don't have that talent! Thanks for sharing them with us. :-) Very lovely job!

Author's reply

Jasta, I am convinced that if you chose to write a drabble, the result would far exceed anything I have ever produced. I am very honored that you feel otherwise though. Thank you so much for taking the time to write me. You made me feel very warm and fuzzy inside. :) LKK

Karri · 10 December 2004 · Chapter 12: From Enmity to Friendship: Part 3 - Searching

Very good! You are doing an outstanding job with this theme.

Author's reply

Your support through this has been immeasurable, Karri. Thank you so very much. I'm glad that you have enjoyed the results of your efforts. LKK

daw the minstrel · 10 December 2004 · Chapter 12: From Enmity to Friendship: Part 3 - Searching

In my opinion, those last two sentences turn this from good to great. I'm not much for drabbles, LKK, but you really are the mistress of them.

Author's reply

I really don't know how to answer your review, daw, except to say that I am deeply honored by your words. LKK

Eruwestial · 10 December 2004 · Chapter 12: From Enmity to Friendship: Part 3 - Searching

Just wonderful! Legolas is so honest with himself, even though this is hard for him. Thank you!

Author's reply

Thank you Eruwestial. I thought it was important for Legolas to admit that he might be wrong. You can't correct a mistake until you acknowledge that you have made one. And we know Legolas will come to realize Gimli's value. :)

Karri · 3 December 2004 · Chapter 11: From Enmity to Friendship: Part 2 - Confusion

Aw! The poor, confused elfling. He needs a nap. Very good drabble, L.

Author's reply

LOL, you might be right, Karri. I think Legolas needs to sleep on this new idea of dwarves appreciating beauty just as elves do. Or ... maybe what the elf *really* needs is to take a walk around Lothlorien. And not necessarily alone either ... ;) LKK

daw the minstrel · 3 December 2004 · Chapter 11: From Enmity to Friendship: Part 2 - Confusion

I really like the idea you're working with here. By juxtaposing these drabbles, you're giving us a story in a very economical form. We get plot as well as emotion, exterior events as well as interior.

Author's reply

I hadn't looked at the cycle in this way, but I like the idea, daw. Four little chapters joined into one longer story. It's still a short story, only four hundred words. But as you say, a story none the less. I hope that "chapters" three and four live up to the first two. :) LKK

Marnie · 3 December 2004 · Chapter 11: From Enmity to Friendship: Part 2 - Confusion

Excellent stuff! Call me obsessed if you will, but I like the way it could equally have been thought by Celeborn ;) I also like the way you don't shy away from Legolas' prejudice. In fact the deeper the prejudice the more remarkable it is that he overcame it in the end.

Author's reply

I never thought of that before, but you're absolutely right. Since Celeborn and Legolas share a distant family history, they're apt to share similar opinions regarding dwarves. Gimli's speech surely surprised them both. Celeborn quickly recanted his anger. Legolas is going to take a little longer to come to terms with this new view of dwarves. But then Tolkien only referred to one of those two elves as "the Wise". :) Thank you for the review, Marnie. LKK

Eruwestial · 2 December 2004 · Chapter 11: From Enmity to Friendship: Part 2 - Confusion

Lovely! That moment when Legolas doubts his own mind where Gimli is concerned. Really lovely.

Author's reply

Thank you, Eruwestial. I'm glad you liked it. I think Gimli's words surprised many elves that night, not just Legolas. :) LKK

Jay of Lasgalen · 26 November 2004 · Chapter 10: From Enmity to Friendship: Part 1 - Mistakes

I like this, LKK. Legolas sounds extremely unfriendly towards Gimli here! I also liked the comment about him not recognising beauty if it stood before him - we know better! It's a goood idea to link the four challenges - I wish I'd thought of that! Jay

Author's reply

Legolas's outburst calling for a plague on dwarves is one of the rare times when he expresses an extreme emotion. It has always stayed with me from the first time I read it. At that moment, I think he was about ready to hit the dwarf. I'm surprised that more people don't write about it. A little hint of things to come: Legolas is going to learn a lot about Gimli's appreciation of beauty before the cycle ends. ;) Thanks for the review, Jay. LKK

Karri · 26 November 2004 · Chapter 10: From Enmity to Friendship: Part 1 - Mistakes

Outstanding, L. You have captured Legolas beautifully.

Author's reply

Thanks, K., I'm glad you liked it. :) Now that I've got Legolas, I'm not going to let him go. You'll have to find a new elf to give round ears to. ;) goes off to find pointed tips to glue back on to the poor elf's ears

daw the minstrel · 26 November 2004 · Chapter 10: From Enmity to Friendship: Part 1 - Mistakes

Oh look! Canon! LOL. Sorry. I'm being silly. This was nice, LKK. You really do pack a lot into the hundred words. The tone of Legolas's "voice" here is quite realistic, I think, not to mention the content of what he says.

Author's reply

Cannon? You betcha! Those elves had loads of gunpowder. ;) Thanks for the review, daw. Writing this drabble was a bit like pulling teeth, rather painful to say the least. The words just wouldn't come without a lot of experimenting. So I'm grateful to hear that you think I got the tone and content right. :)

Nilmandra · 16 November 2004 · Chapter 9: For She Is Dear to Us

I have had outlined in my head for some time what my version of events will look like with this, and regardless of how any writer envisions it, it is still awful and horrifying and she never recovers. And her poor sons never forget - many orcs do pay for what a few did to her. Nicely done.

Author's reply

I can't wait to read how you handle Celebrian's capture, recovery, and departure, Nilmandra. Like you said, everyone sees it differently. But no matter how we see the specifics, Celebrian's story is one of the saddest in all of Tolkien's works, in my opinion. Thanks for the review. :)

Karri · 16 November 2004 · Chapter 9: For She Is Dear to Us

Alas, I am beginning to fear that ranks of the Legolas Fan-girls have lost yet another soul to the Twins. Oh well. The pair seem to inspire lovely drabbles from you. This very good, if a bit chilling. :-)

Author's reply

Me lose my inner Legolas Fan-girl?! Never! Bite your tongue, Karri. As much as I love to read about Legolas, I find him intimidating to write about. The twins are easier for me to come up with drabble & story ideas. I liked that you found this drabble chilling. I wanted to send a shiver up the reader's spine, especially with the last line. Thanks for the review, Karri. :)

Jay of Lasgalen · 16 November 2004 · Chapter 9: For She Is Dear to Us

Excellent. The twins' wrath is very well portrayed, and it is hardly surprising they turned to vengeance. Jay

Author's reply

Thank you, Jay, I'm glad you liked the protrayal. I thought the twins were a natural topic for the wrath subject. I was a little afraid you would have a wrath drabble with the twins out before I could get mine out. I wouldn't want to be accused of stealing your idea!

Sulriel · 16 November 2004 · Chapter 9: For She Is Dear to Us

Well-done. Celebrian and the Twins are some of my favorite subjects. I like how you present their thoughts of revenge as deliberate, it adds depth to their pain.

Author's reply

Thank you, Sulriel. To me, the twins' revenge had to have been deliberate since they persued orcs for so long after Celebrian left. LKK

daw the minstrel · 16 November 2004 · Chapter 9: For She Is Dear to Us

This is a topic I've been thinking about lately. How hard it must have been for them all to watch know what was happening, to find her too late, and then to watch her suffer for a year. In a way, they've been saving up all their anger for later and now it spills over. Nicely done, as usual, LKK.

Author's reply

The year that the family watched Celebrian not recover must have been very difficult for everyone. Once it was clear that she could not recover, I can see the twins giving in to their pent up rage. Thanks for the review, daw. :)

Werecat · 2 November 2004 · Chapter 8: Spoons

Heh, I loved that! You have captured Lobelia perfectly and the last line was a killer!

Author's reply

Glad to hear you enjoyed this, Werecat. :) I appreciate you taking the time to let me know. LKK

Karri · 2 November 2004 · Chapter 8: Spoons

LOLOL!! An excellent snapshot of Lobelia. Very good! Might you consider a drabbling a snapshot of her post-Ring War?

Author's reply

Hmmm... now there's an idea. I'll have to reread that part of Scouring of the Shire to refresh my memory. Then we'll see what ferments. Thanks for the idea and especially the review, Karri. I'm glad you liked the drabble. LKK

Carol · 2 November 2004 · Chapter 8: Spoons

I thought that was absolutly hillarious. Loved the lumpy umbrella!! Just went through something simliar myself. You actually wrote my late father-in-laws girlfriend lol.

Author's reply

Oh dear! I hope you found all the items hid in the girlfriend's umbrella, Carol. ;) I'm glad you liked my little piece of humor. I appreciate you dropping me a note to say so! LKK

Leaward · 2 November 2004 · Chapter 8: Spoons

I think this is very nicely done! It captures her (Lobelia) perfectly -- and I can picture her face when she's caught at the end.

Author's reply

I can picture her face when she's caught at the end. That's what I like about drabbles. I can leave all the hard work (like describing Lobelia's face!) to the very clever reader. ;) Thank you for your comments, Leaward. It's nice to hear that you enjoyed this. :)
