Oh, Pippin

sophinisba · 10 January 2008 · Chapter 8: Echoes of the Past

I love seeing Aragorn's concern for the hobbits and how he takes his responsibilities in helping them so seriously.

Sophinisba · 7 January 2008 · Chapter 3: The Summons

Oooh, I love this! I really liked the bit about what Merry and Faramir have in common. And again I love this whole feeling of unease Merry has, being surrounded by big people, feeling like he doesn't have enough to do.

Sophinisba · 6 January 2008 · Chapter 1: The Mustering

I just started reading this from Periantari's rec and I really like it so far. I liked that this first chapter was so quiet with nothing too dramatic but you can still feel Merry's deep sadness. Here's a link to Periantari's rec, in case you'd like to read: http://community.livejournal.com/lotr_fic_recs/108401.html?thread=639857#t639857

It's such a nice surprise to receive a comment on something this old. I'm glad you're enjoying this so far. Thanks for providing the link, too. I hadn't seen Peri An's rec. :)

Okay, now I'm just laughing at you. In a good way, of course. You are a dear, dear person for loving this story so much, and it made my inbox happy to see a review for anything, since I haven't written a thing in forever. *hearts you*

Periantari · 9 January 2006 · Chapter 22: Victory

"And to Merry, for his bravery in facing the horror of the Black Captain, and most especially for having the courage to do what he must, even when it meant allowing the rest of us to go into danger without him." That's just the gist of the story. And said so very well here. I love Frodo's toast and all the hobbit's toast and... ::sigh:: this story is just so love. (sorry i'm still flooding your email with reviews. :P) hehe =) "You can’t lay that burden on yourself and apparently, neither can I, anymore. We all made the choice to be here and no one can change that now, simply by wishing things were different. What we can do, what we’ve been doing, is help each other face the consequences of the choices we’ve made." So true. SO true. The dialogue between Frodo and Merry made me think of how similar they are with each other in attitude at times. Both are protective and plan and are practically-inclined and just... yeah i can see similarities between them. THanks so much for this story (again) ...i enjoy rereading parts of it at times when i don't want to go to bed. ;) :P

Author's reply

Never apologize for reviewing. Thank you for caring so much about this story. :)

Periantari · 18 December 2005 · Chapter 22: Victory

So perfect. Omg, what a perfect ending. I knew that Frodo would feel as guilty as Merry for bringing them along... *Such* a perfect ending. And the beginning with the nightmare and Merry defeating it was so great to include. This story just makes me "squee" all over again. ... sorry, i'll be more coherent later. But yes, this was a joy to read and i'm so glad you wrote it. It couldn't have been better. I love your Merry so much. :) Tears flowed freely down Merry’s cheeks as the minstrel sang, and for once, he made no effort to check them. There was not a dry eye in the company and Merry felt his heart would break, for the pain Frodo and Sam had suffered, and also for the love and honour being shown them now. **from last chapter but written so so so so well. :D ANd the last line of this chapter... :*) :*( :*) so incredible. I adore, am in love with this story. :D Thank you so so so so so so much for this jewel. :D

Author's reply

I am so glad you enjoyed this story, and I admire your dedication in plowing through it the way you did! :)

Periantari · 17 December 2005 · Chapter 20: Recovery

"It’s just...I feel so out of control, and it frightens me. How can I take care of Pip and the others when I fall to pieces every time I have a stupid dream?" aww~! Aragorn and Merry talking was written oh so well and it truly is a big step to distinguish between the SHadow-touched dreams and regular dreams. I really liked how Aragorn was so insistent about talking in which Merry is more reluctant... i love your Aragorn and Merry interaction in this story and that is indeed a highlight of the entire story... Suddenly, Merry became aware of a certain glint in Pippin’s eyes. One he hadn’t seen in a long while. Not since Rivendell, he supposed. "What are you plotting, Peregrin Took?" he asked suspiciously. The twinkle was quickly extinguished as Pippin put on his most innocent face before replying. "I’m sure I don’t know what you are talking about, Meriadoc Brandybuck, and it’s a fine thing, I must say, to be suspected of plotting by my own dear cousin." So sweet~ and so glad that Pippin is his normal self again~ lol--suspected of plotting that is such a sweet detail to put in. :D Pippin innocent? really? ;) "I thought about naming her after you, but she is far too pretty and sweet-tempered to be saddled with such a name." lol! That was so funny i literally laughed out loud in RL. :D So funny and..yes i just love it. :D I love the darkness of this tale yet the lightness and the interaction you have between characters is oh so perfect. This is definitely one of my favorite stories because i always wanted a gapfiller of what Merry thought when he had to deal with all his kinsman being injured from the War and the Quest... Thanks so much for this... ::continues to read:: =)

Periantari · 17 December 2005 · Chapter 19: Turn and Turn About

awww Merry! the last bit really surprised me since i was thinking it woudl be all uphill recovering from there but i guess the "trauma" from the Quest still is very much in the hobbits' minds.... It's so cool to see Pippin comfort Merry though--i really liked that. I'm sure there would be nightmares for all hobbits since this Quest really had them going through so much. It's really interesting to think about the psychological effects of the Quest and i guess that's why Angst is so popular in fanon. :D Great chapter~ i also really liked the part in which Pippin knew that Merry had a headache--the scene by the stream was wonderfully described as well and Legolas being there was great as well for this is Fellowship bonding time again. :D but your Merry is my highlight of this story. :D <3Merry! :D

Author's reply

I had to throw in one more little bit of drama before the end, just to keep everyone on their toes, lol. :)

Periantari · 17 December 2005 · Chapter 18: The Morning After

This chapter was awesome. :D Finally, they began to speak of the things that lay closest to their hearts, concern for Frodo and Sam, wonder at the idea they could possibly have won this unwinnable war, and their joy, in the midst of this chaos, to have survived everything and still have each other. awwww~! this made me so excited and just yes, I so agree with this statement and makes me love hobbits all the more. So glad that Tolkien had them all return to the Shire safe and whole--it would've been horrible had one of them died and i just dont' think i could bear that. I love your concern that you show throughout the chapters that Merry and Pippin have for each other-- both of them are tired from the Quest and hurt from the Quest and their looking after each other is so rightly portrayed and just so well-written. Now, you try shouting at Frodo like that, and he’ll hand you your head on a silver platter, but that’s a different story altogether. I’m much more understanding than dear old Frodo." Merry was unable to suppress a snort of surprised laughter. "Well, I suppose I’d best keep my temper under tight control around Frodo, then." "Yes, I suppose you’d best," Pippin agreed with a straight face. lol i love this observation of which cousin has authority. ;) <3Frodo. Merry still needs to beware of his temper with Frodo. :) ANd this is my favortie parrt which really made me laugh out loud: Merry scowled up at his friend. "Is this a new game for you, Aragorn, getting me drunk? Because you are very good at it." "I take full responsibility for the first occasion," Aragorn answered with a barely suppressed smile. "But I think this one is all on you, my friend." Poor Merry and what a rascal Aragorn is! In chapter 14, i was already like, Aragorn what are you doing getting Merry drunk when he's been touched by the shadow and such? lol So great. Hobbits and wine.... i want more stories like that. hehe :D And Aragorn surely knows and has an instinct to know that Merry is a light-weight and needs tea and soothing drinks in the morning--lol... what a mind-reader. :D

Author's reply

My favorite part about writing this story was getting the contrast between those really dark, serious moments, and the light-hearted face that hobbits present when times are grim. All the little games that Merry and Pippin play to keep themselves and each other from falling headlong into the dark are really important. As for Aragorn setting Merry drunk, it was an underhanded trick, but it was also necessary. Merry needed to talk but his controls were so rigid he wasn't about to say anything. Aragorn needed to play a little dirty in order to help Merry. Hobbits and wine.... i want more stories like that. Yes, I like the hobbits and wine combo myself, lol. If you haven't already read 'A Picnic' you may want to check it out. Just a lighthearted bit of drunken hobbit fluff without the dark undertow.

Periantari · 17 December 2005 · Chapter 17: The Giving of Swords

I didn't know you were at SoA until now so will continue reviewing from here. :) I love your Aragorn so very much--his concern adn care for the hobbits is just so wonderfully described. And yes, you made me love him as well. :) I loved his conversation with Merry about Pippin's nightmares--i could imagine Merry being frustrated on not being the one to comfort PIppin. :) And the last part where Merry pledged service to Eomer and the Rohirrim was so wonderfully written...i so loved it and now love Merry more than ever before. =) :D

Author's reply

Poor Merry. All he wants to do is protect Pippin but sometimes Pippin's desire to protect Merry in turn gets in the way, and this is one of those cases. I'm glad you liked the pledge ceremony. It's one of those little moments that must have happened at some point, that Tolkien just brushed over.

Lindelea · 6 February 2005 · Chapter 20: Recovery

So much to love in this chapter! Aragorn's talk with Merry, Pippin having watched over Merry most of the night, Merry learning to fight the Shadow, Eomer's understanding, Pippin's joy at Frodo and Sam's recovery, the "shoving" match, Merry's conspiring to get Pippin to take a nap (even though he was really in need of one himself!). I was right! You finished the story during that busy period when I wasn't able to read anything.

Author's reply

Thanks! I'm glad you were able to catch up and read the rest of this, and that you liked it. :)

Hai Took · 27 December 2004 · Chapter 22: Victory

*sigh* What a wonderful ending! You did the splendidly! They way Merry fought off the shadow in his dreams and was able to defeat it was great! Gives such a wonderful out look for the rest of Merry's life. I'm sorry the story is over but it was well done and fun to follow! I'm glad they are all together! The last paragraph was beautiful and was such a wonderful idea. Thank you for the story! It was lots of fun!

Author's reply

Thank you so much for all the lovely reviews you've left along the way. I'm just glad I made it to the end (there were times when I felt like chucking the whole thing in the trash bin), as I would have hated to leave it dangling for anyone.

GamgeeFest · 27 December 2004 · Chapter 22: Victory

What a lovely ending! Our four hobbits together again, feasting and toasting. Merry's new courage will serve him well in the coming years, and he seems to have finally mastered it with that fight with the Shadow. Well done!

Author's reply

Thank you!

LinweP · 22 December 2004 · Chapter 22: Victory

Thank you for your great stor "A New Kind Of Courage." And congratulations on finishing it! I have been reading it through the links you so kindly provide to Quill and Ink. It was set during one of my favorite time periods, and of course, it featured lovely hobbits getting better after the quest. Very enjoyable and well written. Thank you and happy holidays.

Author's reply

Happy holidays to you as well! Thank you for the lovely comment. I'm glad you found the story and enjoyed it. :)

Mistarry · 22 December 2004 · Chapter 22: Victory

Wow. I'm speachless. This story is-was just....amazing. I really mean that. I asked you the same question for weeks on end, and each week I would check daily for an update. Each update was better than the last. As readers, we followed Merry through his fears, regrets, guilt, and love, and we both pitied and were in awe of him. As a writer, you did a phemonomel job, and I must say that I think this is truely one of the best fanfiction stories ever copleted =)! I am SO sad that this is over, but at least now my question has been answered: YES Merry is for the most part over the shadow. I'm satisfied with Aragorn's answer, even if Merry may not be.... "Merry smiled, finally understanding what Faramir had meant. He looked at his friends and felt his heart bursting with love and a great joy that they were all together once more, but certain now in the knowledge that even if they should be separated again in the future, in their hearts they would always be together. " Once again, WONDERFUL job, and hopefully I'll be reviewing another one of your fabulous stories soon.... ~Misty =)

This is one of the nicest comments I've received for anything I've written. I twas thinking of you when I wrote the end bits, finally freeing Merry from the Shadow. I'm so glad you approved. :)

pipinheart · 22 December 2004 · Chapter 22: Victory

Really great ending to a lovely story..Finally Merry has found a way to fight against the shadow in his dreams. Frodo and Merry have a talk and he wants to ask forgivness for bringing them on this quest...But merry tells frodo, they all made the decision to come along. Merry realizes each of us have our strengths and weekness and nothing is wrong with that, sometimes others must carry on in which we cannott... A new Kind of courage....... Loved it!!

Author's reply

Thank you! It's been a long road for Merry, but he finally reached that understanding in the end. :)

Grey Wonderer · 21 December 2004 · Chapter 22: Victory

Loved it on LJ and love it here too. I like getting to read the chapters twice. Was sorry to see this one end, but I did love how it all tied back together so neatly and how it ended on a happy note! I am a sucker for a happy ending!

Author's reply

Thank you! I'm a sucker for a happy ending, too. I can torture my characters as much as I want, as long as I fix things in the end (at least as much as things can be fixed). I think a part of me is going to miss writing this, even though I was more than ready to be done with it. :)

SlightlyTookish · 21 December 2004 · Chapter 22: Victory

Oh, a lovely final chapter. Yay for Merry, fighting the Shadow and winning! I'm sad to see this story end but this was a wonderful conclusion. Well done :)

Author's reply

It was definitely time for Merry to have a little success fighting against the Shadow. Thank you for sticking with this all the way through! :)

Thanks :)

Grey Wonderer · 11 December 2004 · Chapter 21: The Feast

Love your discription of the feast and so I decided to read it again over here. I also like the happy ending of this chapter with the hobbits off to get a good night's rest after their big day. Merry deserves it! This has been a wonderful story. I am looking forward to the next chapter.

Author's reply

Thanks! I'm going to go work on the next chapter now, and hopefully, I'll even make a little progress on it. :)
