I wondered if I hadn't pared away too much on that one, but the joke didn't seem like enough to support anything much longer. That one came out of a couple of lines in Unfinished Tales (in "The History of Galadriel and Celeborn") where Fëanor asked repeatedly for a strand of Galadriel's hair, which she always refused him. Somebody on another site wondered what would happen if Fëanor had somehow managed to get himself released from Mandos before Gimli showed up with his little souvenir of Lothlórien, and this is what I came up with.

I almost tell him of the Bounders teaching us to look just above the horizon to spot movement in the dark, of moonless nights keeping watch so any attack would find all our menfolk well-rested. Just in time, I remember how pleased he is to think that nobody here really changed, and say only, “You should have eaten your carrots.” You pack so much into 100 words! I'm hoping you get put on hold more often!

Yep. I remember "Dinner Guests". I'm sure I reviewed it over at another site. I couldn't believe it was canon and started looking for references... Amazing, the complexity of Middle-earth.
