For some reason I thought it was going to be Meriel herself, first. :) Very well written. I like it.

Wonderful! I definately think that you should continue this. I love the maid's defiance of tradition. In America, where I live, black is a color of mourning, but ladies wear it because they *think* it makes them look thinner. Either that or they wear white. So every party, girls and women are wearing black or white dresses, so I decided to defy that horrid tradition and wore bright fuchia-pink with bright orange flowers and lime-green trim (don't worry; it didn't really look that bright and clashy). And how they stared..... rather like I imagine they did at this maid's purple gown amid the golds and silvers. Thank you for this lovely story. Farawyn

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like you must have been a sensation at the party.

I forgot to review this when I read it a long time ago :( Wonderful story- the pride and arrogance of the speaker perfectly reflects those of Númenor at its worst. She's very realistic in her joy and temerity at thumbing her nose at the gods. But she's not hateful, either. Very nice. Feel sorry for the nurse, though, and those others of the Faithful who presumably were unable to leave :(

Thanks for the feedback. I don't find her hateful either - she's too young to be hateful, I think. Her dad I might well find a lot easier to dislike, I reckon. The drowning of Numenor, while in the great traditions of many religions seems very unfair - both children and some of the Faithful must have drowned presumably.

I don't think I've read a piece from the PoV of someone who isn't one of the Faithful. I like it, you have the casual arrogance of someone who is young and thinks that she will live forever. I don't have any beta comments - it's fine as it is.

Thanks, Elvenesse. You know, once I started she just wrote herself - and now I can see a fine old mix of inspiration in there. There's everything from young driver fatality rates to the decline of the Roman Empire to Georgette Heyer's Regency novels... oh, yeah - and some Silm. ;-) Avon
