Yes, a perfect moment for Boromir to begin to realize that the North, too, has fought the long war, and has paid dearly for it.
Author's reply
The Dúnedain of the North and South have fought the enemy in very different ways. The participation of Aragorn's people in the war is much harder to recognize, given the secrecy in which they lived and fought.

· Chapter 7: Trouble
Oh, dear--a child's natural love for sweet things leads to confrontation. And now Ada's found him, as Ada always will, I think....
Very nice moment here.
Author's reply
I know that when I was a child, my oh so perfect hiding places where discovered all too quickly by adults ... And I doubt that Imladris' cakes were easy to resist.

Yes, Thorongil would ever be open to spending time with children, I think. Very nice.

Oh yes. He might have argued with Denethor had he asked him to attend to some formal meeting. But to deny a child ...

Yes, at this time Denethor is still loth to lose the Captain....

Yup, he may not like him, but Thorongil is still a valuable addition to Gondor's forces.

/Larner giggles. A bit of twitting of their friend by Gimli and Legolas, is it? As pleasurable, in its way, as my idea of him finding a patchwork quilt has been added to his bedroll for when he goes out with the Rangers of Ithilien.
Author's reply
I think Aragorn needed a good tease now and then. With all the seriousness of being king, he surely needs a break. And Legolas and Gimli are just the two to provide the necessary distraction.

· Chapter 3: An Unexpected Party
Aha! So Thorongil is familiar with the devious nature of dragon-talk, is he? Yes, let the challenge go on.
Author's reply
Since Thorongil has spent his younger days in Imladris and was certainly present when Bilbo returned (though I am not sure if they met), I bet that he is very familiar with Bilbo's adventure and the demise of Smaug. Furthermore, I am quite sure that there were few things Denethor in his obsession to gain knowledge and control about everyone and everything did not try in order to discover more about his secretive Captain.

Halbarad's thoughts are true enough. Bless him as he stands at Aragorn's side.

Halbarad's devotion to Aragorn has always amazed me, as well as Tolkien's brief hints at their friendship.

Aha--Arwen and Aragorn considering the changes life has brought him. No, I'd not miss the days spent without cover in rain; but with her at his side he'd find a good deal of joy to be found in what is NOW.
Author's reply
I think there are aspects of his rangering life that Aragorn would surely miss in his life as a king. But rainy days in the wild certainly don't belong to them :-)
Thanks for reviewing this chapter twice ;-)

· Chapter 12: Insubordination
I love the image of dripping Aragorn, calmly explaining to Denethor why he chose to disregard orders. I kind of sympathize with poor Denethor here, though!
Author's reply
I was not quite sure if the whole setting is believable. Aragorn would need very good reasons to defy an order. But I think there must have been situations where his opinion and Denethor's opinion where just too far apart. And even Aragorn's patience has its limits, especially if he is convinced that he is right and Denethor is not. But he would not ask someone else to act against Denethor in such a way, so he had to go himself ;-)

What a nice image. You're getting me all hopeful for an update of "Doomed to Live" now...

My Aragorn muse complains that this image is not nice. But with posting all those drabbles I rediscovered on my harddrive I am myself getting hopeful that "Doomed to Live" might make some progress one of these days ...

Another memory between Denethor and Thorongil--the one whom his son wished to see? Perhaps another perception that Thorongil stole the love of those Denethor cherished, from Denethor's POV, of course.

Love this bit of April foolery committed by Gimli. Must have had fun thinking it up!

The sparring between Thorongil and Denethor must have become intense at times, as Denethor sought to prove his suspicions. Love this, and love the dragon-talk.

I like thinking of Thorongil being looked on as a pet-come-hero by baby Boromir. Although I don't think Denethor is so keen.
Author's reply
I agree that Denethor is not overly fond of Boromir's admiration for the Captain. Thorongil has so many admirors already. But Denethor is more than willing to give in to his son's demands knowing that Thorongil would rather seek his own bed. One of the small joys in Denethor's life :-)

· Chapter 7: Trouble
This is a disaster with the inevitability of rain in April. Small boy, cake, icing, visitors = cake on floor, tipsy trifle and irritated adults.
I rather imagine that small boys in large households are attracted to the kitchen like flies to jam, too.
Good thing that Elrond is a very patient and long-suffering eld - and that his kitchen staff were probably trained by the twins to know what to expect.
Author's reply
Thanks for the review. The kitchen staff of Imladris is not only well trained in expecting mischief in their kitchen but also well trained in expecting where to find the miscreants.
Have a nice Sunday,

This fairly begs for elaboration! A diversion for what? Why did it go so horribly wrong? What *did* happen to Thorogil that even the healer asks that question? Was the 'cost' really so surprising--or did that play a role in why Thorongil volunteered?
So many questions...I'd beg you to answer them in a story, but I'd be afraid of distracting you from Doomed to Live (hint hint). I understand how busy life can be, though.
Great writing, as usual. Thank you!
Author's reply
Thanks for the review. I agree with you that this begs for elaboration. Unfortunately, my muse came up only with this snippet. Though I am fairly certain that the 'cost' was not surprising for Thorongil but among the reasons he volunteered. I, too, am trying to find out more about the circumstances, but for the moment, 'Doomed to Live' and 'Frost and Thaw' have precedence (don't want to wake any of the peacefully sleeping plottbunnies under my desk).

Bet he did miss it. Until he remembered the advantages. Amongst which he would be unlikely to include council meetings, but would definitely include the loving embrace of the Evenstar.

But it's such a good idea! Is Aragorn really going to dismiss it out of hand?
Oh - I quite forgot - Sauron isn't there to besiege the city again.
Maybe Legolas's scheme would be more suitable for a city re-accustoming itself to peace.
Author's reply
I think Legolas' scheme would have been as outrageous as Gimli's, only in another way. I think Gimli and Legolas have come to the conclusion that Aragorn has turned much too serious, now that he has become King.
