Lots of nice details in this one. I like the way that Aragorn warns Eldarion to keep his composture and then how Eldarion worries about his father. He is shocked! shocked I tell you! that anyone would think he is babying Aragorn.
Legolas's pride in Earnulf was also great to read about. I was surprised about the Ent. I hadn't expected that.
Author's reply
So glad I was able to be unpredictable - it is so hard when you have nutted out an idea in pain and torment ( well, with some difficulty anyway -G-)to see it as either surprising or good.
I try to post before I have got to the 'this is complete rubbish, why do I even try' stage and delete the lot.
Thanks for your loyal reviews

I loved this chapter. I like your Aragorn - and Eldarion. So cute to see him looking after his father and conspiring with Cirion to ease the pressure on the king.
Legolas is so . . . . sweet - 'gazing at the horseman as if he was a mid-winter gift', full of the 'flightiness of elves'. I relished the embarrassment of the poor young captain of the Rohirrim as Aragorn had to tease out his reason for visiting - and what a reason it was! An unexpected visit from an Ent! And Treebeard lost. It certainly sounds as if the adventure is gearing up to be exciting (and painful, of course - but, hey, what do we expect.) I am really looking forward to the next instalment.
Author's reply
Pain, oh yes, there will be pain - evil laugh. The trouble is I get to like all my versions of these characters that I have trouble getting to the meaty stuff, mind you, not that much trouble. Rubs hands. heh.
Thanks for your time - I so appreciate the review.

What is it with New Zealanders and librarians? Don't you like us, don't you need us? First this sad excuse of a figure in FotR, - he could of course have been an archivist, that would be o.k., archivists are stuffy - and now you ... Librarians are very nice, hardworking, helpful! people and when we swat our users it's only for their own good.
Before you told us I hadn't even noticed that the story lacked a plot so far, hmmm. Well, if a plot helps you with updating, yay for plots.
Author's reply
Rose runs away and hides under a pile of overdue library books-G. I am sorry. New Zealanders are always ranked in the top one or two of world populations who read rather than do anything else, we frequent our libraries so assidiously that the odd, rather draconic, librarian looms large in our collective imagination. Calumny really, since all the librarians I have had anything to do with in the last ten years are models of customer service and knowledge. However, I am an old fart now, my children remain scared to death of the volunteer dragons at our local library.(And they are 20,17 and 14)!
I might be able to make it up to the poor maligned fellow later in the story. Mind you, I think to put the fear of god into a feisty dwarf like Gimli is no mean feat -VBG.
Thanks for the review and I hope the plot lives up to your yay. And equally that the formatting is now FIXED.

Why, RS! As I live and breathe...an update!!!! YAY!!! I have been watching ever so long for one and here it is! And do I get to review right away? Of course not! RL has had me in a choke hold lately and I am getting sick and tired of it, ya know? (I'll bet it's had you, too.) How dare it interfere with reading and reviewing stories about M-E? Anywho, I am really glad to see this chapter.... :-) :-) :-)
The thought of Gimli diligently searching through towers of books and scrolls in Aragorn's library made me smile HUGELY (the name Sneezy comes to mind LOL)! Our dwarf has hidden capabilities, tho', doesn't he? And with a commission such as he has been given, a little research is in order. Enter elf-nanny Legolas...and in a sarcastic mood, I see. "Even great dwarves need to eat, or so you have always lead me to believe. Or is this need another that has been waived by the grace that visited you in Firien Wood?" Smart-aleck elf! *vbg* Gimli must be mellowing indeed if he didn't take exception to that little lecture! :-)
Narvi a girl dwarf, huh? That seemed to boggle Legolas' mind! LOL
OOOOOOOhhhh, another RING!?? RS, you KNOW how much trouble rings cause in M-e! Now we have a new one...concealed for ages, but important enough the Aule seeks out one of his own to search for it and repair whatever damage has been done! Trouble, yep, I sense trouble brewing!
So, we're off now to see Celeborn in Imladris (dare I hope the twins make an appearance later? *begs and pleads*) Of course, first Legolas must get over Gimli's mild insult, but hey, what are friends for - especially these two!
Isn't the concept of time and the elves' perception of it fascinating?
I loved the crack about humans and their uses - honestly, that's two for Thranduilion in one chapter!!!! :-)
Earnulf - I liked him before in "Cadenza" and he's really grown up now. I loved the part about him being excited about seeing his lord Legolas again, and the test he is expecting from Aethel when he gets home. I wonder what the message from Elfwine was!? Great stuff, as usual...Update soon, my friend...

My friend, why would I writeif not for your superb reviews! Thank you.
My son decided to sit on my lap and read the review with me (he is fourteen, go figure, other mothers have to chase their boys for a cuddle, I have to beat mine off with a stick ) It took some reading. How wonderful to have such a detailed review. For my knees' sake I may have to read any future ones standing up (fourteen year old boys are heavy!)
RL as you so perceptively comment, is decidedly lumpy. Everything happens not only at once but on top of each other - followed by deserts of not much of anything at all. The muses are back now, hopefully they will stay and updates will be weeklyish.
I have no idea if I can shoehorn the twins into this, with my cast of thousands sticking up their hands and saying 'pick me'it is a bit of a lottery who is going to make it into this fic.
Magic Rings seem so ME, aye? I hope I can do the genre justice.

I love the image of Gimli in the library. There's no reason he shouldn't be good with books, I guess. I just never pictured him that way. I was also amused at your making Narvi a "she." I guess with dwarves it's hard to tell!
The scene with the Rohirrim was nicely done, with enough detail to give a real sense of their discomfort and their relationships.
Author's reply
Thanks daw, Narvi as female has been generally well recieved, there must have been some of them for heaven's sake! I am glad you like my strapping Rohirrim, I am rather fond of them too. (dirty old woman that I am)
Appreciate the review

I don't know how I missed this story! There's a nice build up with details of Gimli's ill-health - how Legolas would grieve if he had really died! But I would think divine intervention is rather worrying - what do the gods want in return?

No such thing as a free lunch huh? I suspect they will charge the usual, life, soul, honour - very scary getting involved with gods.

'What is the point of having humans if they don’t do chores?” '
Humans as pets to the greater races!
Author's reply
A shameless lift from 'On Golden Pond' that I have being dying to use for ever! (In the film the protagonist says of his grandson "What's the point of having dwarves if they don't do chores?" which has tickled me ever since) - could not for the life of me think of a respectful way to use that, ever, in a fan fic, but it works turned round, I hope.

Oh good - I was wondering about this!!
What's worse - being an elf who cares for mortals and watching them decay around you or being a mortal trying to come to terms with ideas such as elves you know having been present during events in the distant past and being present still when you are dust? It's no wonder that elves prefer to have little to do with mortals. A quick acquaintance of a year or two would be all right, but prolonging it would only be painful.
I like Narvi being female. There are too many places in Tolkien where generations appear to have happened spontaneously by cloning, in the complete absence of females. (It irritates me, actually - and I wonder whether he would have been able to get away with it if he were writing now.) And dwarven females, being relatively difficult for outsiders to recognise could just as easily be among the names listed.
I enjoyed watching Gimli in the library, with Legolas sneaking him meals. I wonder just how intimidated the librarian felt with the two of them looking at him. And the event he seeks is too far back in history for him to find it in books, so he's going to go and ask someone who was actually there!
What are the Rohirrim doing, though? Earnulf sounds as if he has grown up to be rather an attractive horse lord, but I can't imagine what he is doing in the big city. Please don't take too long to indulge my curiosity.
Good to see this - look forward to more.

Oh, thank you for your prompt review, especially as I have been so niggardly with mine recently (mainly owing to reading nothing as a spur to writing this!)

OK. Now I am totally wondering what's going on. Gimli apparently needs to go on some sort of mission. I was really feeling for him with his mourning for his lost prime and now he seems to be full of vinegar again. I'm so glad.

Well, mellon nin, you had me there...I knew Gimli was dead, and facing Aule, and all I could think of was "send the boy back cos this will be the death of the elf", especially if he got Gleowyn's note and wasn't in time...*sniffsniffsniff* And I was listening to the sound track of RotK, the part right before Pippin sings (where Faramir and others are riding through the streets on the way to certain death) which makes me cry anyway!!!
Now Gimli has a mission given to him by the Vala (that's cool, and I can't imagine what in Arda he wants Gimli to do), and Legolas and the trees are relieved beyond measure. (I liked your take on Legolas losing his composure and giving the dwarf a BIG hug! His relief was palpable there, and you caught it so well!) This story was full of crying places...I almost lost it again when Legolas found him and thought he was gone...which he was...but thank Iluvatar Aule has always liked Gimli best...and he restored Gimli's health, too, at least for a time!! :-) This was great...do hurry and tell us what the request made by Aule was!!

What a chapter! Fantastic. Good for Aule - Gimli needed rescuing at this point. (Though I suspect it could lead to Other Things.)
I love the way everybody is wanting to help the irascible dwarf - and he doesn't even realise that they all care about him.
More! Soon, please.

Indeed, no free gifts from the gods, I am inspired by Lois Macmaster Bujold's wonderful fics in which those that are touched by the gods are not exactly comfortable to be around. (hey aim high in you influences I say!)

Hi, Rose!
Just to add to the review I left at fanfiction net already:
I just registered that I got it wrong and this story is set in FA 110, not FA 120!
Sorry, then, because in my other eview I was getting the circumstances all wrong, and therefore wrote a few things that make no sense.
Anyway, all the things I said about the way you portray Gimli and how he deals with the revelation of his impending mortality (with is beautiful and subtle) on fanfiction net is true, nevertheless, and I am looking very much forward to see more of this story! Legolas will be very hard hit by Gleowyns letter, since it brings home to him with zttermost shapness the mortality of his friend. And it will also bring home to him the mortality of Aragorn again, wich he will dislike also. Now he is starting to pay the price of associating himself so closely with "Mayflies"! On the other hand, knowing that Gimli may have another ten yeras to live in Middle Earth at leasst (according to canon), will make it all the more amusing (although also heart-wrenching) to see Legolas fuss over him....
But I am relieved that they have, at least canonically, ten more yearsd alltogether to enjoy in Middle earth, includuing the stricken dwarf.
Please continue soon, this is very promising!
Greetings to you,
Aislynn
Author's reply
Aislynn, thank you so much for both of your reviews. The length of this story requires some years before the end of things, and anyway I am sidling up to the difficult stuff! I've been thinking about the theme of this, which has struck something of a chord for my readers. The endeavour will be to make this a story more about maintaining hope against the odds, as well as about the mortal stuff. It will be interesting to see if I can do it (ducks and runs for cover) Nothing like aiming high, huh?
Stories of Arda have such a clever system I do appreciate your reviews here, although my sad review count on ffnet will miss your steadfast support.
Next ch next week I hope.

*gulp* RS!!!!!! Is it you??? It is! And I almost missed this story! Bless the elf, if I hadn't been looking for stories about Legolas, I would have! Yours was right on top! I looked at it for 5 minutes thinking, I don't remember that story....duh, linda, because it's new!
I am, as usual, absolutely blown away by this first chapter! So, we are still dealing with mortality/immortality, huh? I feel a crying jag coming on...I really do! Poor Gimli! (I know how he feels...since I reached a certain age, I have been literally falling apart. :-/) And now, even Aglarond offers little comfort to him...the caves are immortal, too! So, a trip to see the King of hearts, and my favorite idea guy...the one who talks to trees, ya know! I loved seeing Gleowyn and her family again...Barda is dead? Not fair at all...and poor Brytta, to think it was his fault. Then he sees Gimli drinking the same stuff as his Grandda and knows immediately what's wrong...a double blow for the boy! *sniff* I loved Gleowyn's foresight in sending Legolas a letter about Gimli's impending trip...of course, the dwarf will not appreciate it if the elf turns up to escort him, will he? This is just great, and I am so glad to see it! (had to laugh at your note before the story, about losing ch.1 in the black hole of cyberspace somewhere...don't you just hate tech-no-logy sometimes?...I know it H-A-T-E-S me!) Linda, I knew there was a reason I was putting myself through this again, (writing) And here it is - your wonderful review! Go kiss yourself on the cheek from me (Hah!)
I think there is a LOTR junky on the line between Theresa and me that pinches our e-mails and reads them! Hers are the only mails that go missing, it is verrrry strange.
You have been hiding your light under a bushel as well - Yes we want to read about the horse and his elf! And as many other tales as you can drag out of the brain!
Mortality, hmmmm. Occupies the mind, doesn't it, when you get to half way? I hope that the themes won't get too clunky throughout this fic, but there are LOTR canon questions I want to have a tilt at.
Updates weekly I hope.

Oh GOOD! Poor Gimli - it doesn't seem right for his indestructability to be infringed upon by something as paltry as ill-health. He is right - he is a warrior, not an old dwarf. Except that time gets to us all, except the elves - and I doubt that is always a good thing.
I'm sorry Bardor died - he was a good strong character, and Gleowyn and the children will miss him. Poor Brytta - children do have a tendency to see themselves as being responsible for things they cannot possibly help, while at the same time being incapable of taking the responsibility for things they can control, like the tidiness of their rooms! Also typical that he blames the medicine for killing his grandfather rather than for keeping him alive . . . although, mind you, he could have a point. How much medicine is taken to counteract the side effects of other medicine? Can't remember, but I seem to recall it is quite a large percentage.
Very sensible of Gleowyn to get straight onto Legolas. Too sensible for any of the chaps, of course.
Very happy to see this. Keep the inspiration flowing.
Author's reply
Thanks Bodkin. I agree, Gleowyn has retained her forthright nature and does not intend for her dwarf to get lost somewhere in the wilds. I did feel sorry for Brytta, but more on him later, I hope. Gimli, of course, has forbidden Frior to pass on any of his medical information to Gliver, or anyone else otherwise no way would his heir allow him to be tripping aroun M-E without an escort, there will be an accounting when the other shoe drops. There is a fine line between self sufficiency and selfishness I think, and to give him his due, Gimli, who is both humble for a dwarf and honourable to his bones, has no idea just how beloved he is of his people and his wider cicle of friends.
Enough already, on to ch 2.

So, mortality as a theme again, Rose? I find it interests me more as I grow older. The poet Stevie Smith says that what gives the first half of life its intensity is the possibility of love and what gives the second half of life its intensity is the possibility of death. Oh dear. I sound morbid and I don't mean to. I feel for Gimli though because he is also mourning what seems to be the loss of himself.
Poor Brytta. I like seeing these characters again after the time gap. Brytta was just a baby!
Author's reply
Ummm, blushes. Yes, I suppose the whole great galumphing cycle has mortality as its theme, since I still have not answered the questions I posed myself at the beginning of the tale. (The usual questions of life the universe and everything, with immortality and extended lifetimes thrown in for good measure, not to mention just what posessed Gimli to go with Legolas at the end of Aragorn's reign.) Still haven't got the answers, but finding out some of the why's and wherefor's has been fun. I hope to have a little dance with the Valar in this one, hey if its good enough for the Greeks? (dodges lightning bolts for her hubris!)
Sometimes I find being an author is a bit like being an elf, time just flashes by and before you know it the baby is ten!
Thanks for reviewing, I will do my best to keep the tone light given the angsty subject matter, I will even try to add a love story sub plot (mind you the wretched protagonists are fighting me every step of the way on this one)
Enough already from me.
Thank again for the encouragement.
