At last, they're reunited! And Pippin is soon to be in Elrond's healing hands! Thank goodness. I had been worried that something else might befall the travelers before reaching the safety of The Last Homely House. I have much faith in Elrond's healing abilities, but I hope it won't be a long, arduous recovery. Pippin has been through so much already! LKK
Hai · 25 October 2003 · Chapter 59: Found
I bet they were all overjoyed to see each other again! I'm glad Pippin didn't need to try and fight off anyone in his state! At least they are almost back to Imladris! I hope Pippin's sight returns, how terrible! Looking forward to more, thank you!
tetshira · 25 October 2003 · Chapter 59: Found
Phew!!! I was hoping it was the other Hobbits coming. Not knowing a thing about horses I have to ask does the burnt sugar method thingy really work? I love the way the hobbits band together around each other when one of them is hurt! Thanks so much for a wonderful story!!
Author's reply
Hi Tetshira! Thank you for the review. To answer your question, I don't really know if the sugar trick would work. I was told about it by a 'horsey' person who said it would, but I would hate to be stranded in the Wild and have to try it out. I, too, love writing the hobbits supporting each other - they share a closeness that so many of us would like to have and so few do.
Grey Wonderer · 25 October 2003 · Chapter 59: Found
This chapter and the one before it are wonderful. This story just keeps getting better with each new chapter. Keep them coming.
Lindelea · 25 October 2003 · Chapter 59: Found
Ah, lovely reunion. Evocative descriptions, as usual. I especially liked this turn of phrase: "began to walk as smoothly as the wind over grass" I only wish my horse had been as intelligent and pleasant as your horses!
Pearl Took · 24 October 2003 · Chapter 59: Found
Budgielover, Another cliffhanger! How wonderful the love of hobbits! Not only does it fill and surround them, it touches all of good heart who come to know them. I love your elven horses and their ability to understand. I will wait patiently, good writing takes time, but know that I am waiting. Pearl Took
shirebound · 24 October 2003 · Chapter 59: Found
SUCH a wonderful chapter! Brave Pippin, and gentle, compassionate Aragorn, and that AMAZING horse, and the hobbits nearly unable to bear up under their relief and shock. Oh, I loved every bit of it! And of course, things like this... "Displaced from hugging his little cousin, Frodo wrapped his arms around Pippin’s knees, as if to keep the tweenager from going anyplace else."
Lindelea · 20 October 2003 · Chapter 58: Adrift in the Darkness
Oh, my, whatever is going to happen next? Cannot wait! Update soon, please!
Pearl Took · 15 October 2003 · Chapter 58: Adrift in the Darkness
Budgielover, This is such a wonderous story!! I've enjoyed every tiny bit. All of the characters are supurbly done and you have an excellent flow of calm, light moments and tight, fast, anxious ones. I about died laughing over Pippin's bread scupture and then Merry's profound embarrassment over the use to which it was put. I love how Frodo moves so easily from being silly with his young cousins, and Sam, to being the mature adult hobbit laying down the law. Elrond felling exhausted by all the hobbit energy, everyone finding themselves drawn to and loving the little ones, the growing up the hobbits are already doing - all marvelous!! Simply a joy! LKK · 14 October 2003 · Chapter 58: Adrift in the Darkness
Strange footsteps approaching Pippin. Not good. Not good at all. I suppose it's too much to hope that the approaching sound is the elven horses. Speaking of the horses, I loved that whole scene with the herd. Very nice. Good chapter. I'm anxious to find out who Pippin hears coming. LKK PS: Thank you for telling me about Merry and the Sons of Elrond. Somehow between switching from Fanfiction.net to SOA, I managed to miss a chapter or two. I'm going to go back and start reading the story from the beginning here to make sure I catch up. Thanks for not chastising me for my faux pas!
Hai · 13 October 2003 · Chapter 58: Adrift in the Darkness
Poor, Pippin! He doesn't need to cry because I cried enough for him! I'm glad that Aragorn was able to get some kind of reaction out of Merry. Frodo and Sam's concerns could be valid should Merry dispare too much. It was wonderful to see another chapter! And so quickly, wow! looking forward to more, tahnk you!
fliewatuet · 13 October 2003 · Chapter 58: Adrift in the Darkness
I only hope that Pippin is just about to meet the rest of his 'walking' party and not more evil men/beasts/whatever. Though I fear for Merry's state of mind should he discover the extend of Pippin's injuries.
shirebound · 13 October 2003 · Chapter 58: Adrift in the Darkness
Oh wow, the whole scene with the horses is just too amazing, Budgie! What incredible respect and communication and intelligence! I was mesmerized!
Ariel · 13 October 2003 · Chapter 58: Adrift in the Darkness
Again with the cliffhangers! LOL! Well, you do know I really love them, don't you? Very nice chapter!
LKK · 12 October 2003 · Chapter 57: Decisions To Be Made
I don't know which I hope more to happen ... for the elf to return Pippin to Elrond before meeting the others so that Pippin can receive the medical attention he needs ... or ... for the others to catch up with the elf so that they will no longer worry as much about Pippin. Legolas' idea for speeding the chase was quite clever. Summon Elrond's horses. I liked that! The reference Merry made to a horse being set free as a reward for her service, is that from a previous story? I would like to read it if you give me its name. Another fine chapter, Budgielover. I'm looking forward to seeing which reunion you choose. (It'll probably be one I'm not expecting at all.) LKK
Author's reply
Hi, LKK! Thank you for the review of my latest chapter of "Recovery in Rivendell." I always appreciate it when someone takes the time to let me know they enjoy my work. It makes it worth it. (And it's so much fun to tease people and say - "no spoilers!") To answer your question on the reference of Elrond setting the mare free, that came from somewhere around chapter 32 or so of this story. On FanFiction.Net, where I also post, I have split this story into two halves, because it kept growing so as to be unmanageable. But on SOA I combined it and think I like it better that way. Anyway, you will find that event taking place somewhere around chapter 32 - it might be one or two chapters in either direction. Thanks again, Gayle/Budgielover
daw the minstrel · 9 October 2003 · Chapter 57: Decisions To Be Made
Progress seems to be being made here. The Elves are doing what they can (and I tend to have lots of faith in Elves) and the walking party should have increased hope because of what they found. We'll see what Elrond can do.
fliewatuet · 8 October 2003 · Chapter 57: Decisions To Be Made
The combined tracking skills of Aragorn and Legolas are not to be underestimated, and Aragorn sure has a trick or two up his sleeve (I love the idea of summoning the aid of retired horses with a bit of candy). I only hope that you will show mercy when it comes to Pippin's health. At least he is heading back to Lord Elrond's care.
Hai · 8 October 2003 · Chapter 57: Decisions To Be Made
Eek! Maybe it will be Inmara will come and ease Merry's heart a little! I'm so glad that the elves decided to oen of them go back with Pippin, hopefully you aren't going to go so far AU as to let Pippin loose his sight! Oh, dear. I'm anxiously awaiting more, you write some of the funnest stories on here and I can look forward to them being long! Thank you!!
Lindelea · 8 October 2003 · Chapter 57: Decisions To Be Made
Wonderful! You converge the threads neatly, and yet they have not met. An old friend might come? The mare (I forget her name), what fun! A small grammatical error, one I often make myself. You have a "who's" where you ought to have a "whose" ("who's" means Who is, while "whose" means belonging to whom)
daw the minstrel · 2 October 2003 · Chapter 56: Two Discoveries
I am so glad that someone is helping Pip, but I'm sorry that his friends are still so worried. Nicely done.
LKK · 1 October 2003 · Chapter 56: Two Discoveries
oh This is horrible :-( The hobbits, Aragorn, and Legolas think Pippin is dead, and Pippin is blind. Alive, but blind. And scared. But at least he's not alone. I hope his saviours can return him to Elrond's household soon so that the others' anguish won't last too long. Another gripping chapter, Budgielover. I hope to read more soon. LKK
Hai · 1 October 2003 · Chapter 56: Two Discoveries
Good think Pippin was found by friendlies! It seems they will take good care of him and hopefully the others won't use too much time looking for him and they can all be reunited in Rivendell. Poor, Pippin! I couldn't imagine loosing my sight! Very frightening! Looking forward to more, thank you so much!
fliewatuet · 1 October 2003 · Chapter 56: Two Discoveries
So the strange object was a dragon's tooth. I quite like the way you mix geographical phenomena with fairy objects. But then, you don't spare our heroes aught! Poor Pippin has to suffer a head-injury and has even lost his eye-sight (only temporarily, I hope), and the rest of his walking party are worried sick about him. And though Pippin is safe with that patrol that will take him back to Lord Elrond's care, the others have no chance of finding his body and won't be spared the sorrow until they return to Rivendell as well (that is, unless something foul happens to them until they reach it ...)
LKK · 22 September 2003 · Chapter 55: Aftermath
Please let Pippin be all right. And soothe the hurts in the hearts of the hobbits, elf, and man. :-( This chapter brought tears to my eyes. It was especially hurtful after the wonderous joy I felt when the hobbits were watching the geyser. (Although I use the word "hurtful", I mean it as high praise for your writing.) Oh, please let Pippin be all right! LKK
