Oh what fun! I have thought in the past that Legolas and Boromir had quite a bit in common - but it hadn't occurred to me that they would be the only ones who didn't suffer with withdrawal symptoms if the pipeweed ran out!
Author's reply
Yes, LotR was definitely a book of the author's times: seven out of nine in the Fellowship were smokers! This is probably completely opposite of what it would be in the modern world! I can certainly imagine the two non-smokers bonding over this!
Dana · 1 January 2006 · Chapter 1
lol. That ending really just -- well, it rally brings it all together. Very nicely done!
Author's reply
Thanks! I had so much fun with this one!!
Gryffinjack · 18 November 2005 · Chapter 1
Very clever! From the title right down to the last line! This certainly would not have been addressed in the books, which were written during a period of time when it was quite the norm to smoke. However, it makes perfect sense for those seven to be having tobacco withdrawal symptoms. While Gandalf would have been smoking for ages and Aragorn and Gimli for decades, the hobbits do seem to be rather fond of their prized leaf and are no doubt just as dependent upon it. I reckon poor Bilbo went through the same thing when he first settled at Rivendell. Legolas and Boromir - now *there's* a pairing you don't see often! Quite refreshing to see the smug interaction between the two of them. I imagine there were a lot of eye rolls between them while the others went through their smoking withdrawal. Very amusing little story!
Author's reply
No, it wouldn't. And it was something I wondered about--where would they get leaf when they ran out? And I had always noticed how Legolas seemed to want to stay downwind of the others--really, think of "Flotsam and Jetsom" and Legolas wanting to go outside as soon as the others light up. And I think Boromir would have felt much the same way. And yes, I was imagining the eye-rolling.
Saoirse · 28 February 2005 · Chapter 1
LoL! Oh, my! ... lol I just love the image of all those poor guys being snappish with each other...And Legolas and Boromir standing off in the corner just watching wearily (and no doubt with some amount of amusment) at their ruffled companions. I know I am going to be laughing about this for days to come...how clever! :)
Author's reply
It just seemed logical to me, LOL! Even Gandalf in Moria says "I have been too long without smoke." And Legolas and Boromir were the only non-smokers in the entire Fellowship. *snicker*
Nina the powerwriter · 6 December 2004 · Chapter 1
Well, I'm going around catching up on all your ficlets that you've been posting. I adore this one! I guess the company got kind of dependant on the pipe-weed? lol, they'll soon settle down. I liked the interaction between Legolas and Boromir. You don't really see that often. Good little story!
Author's reply
Poor Legolas and Boromir were the odd ones out in this situation, LOL! It is fun to do interaction that is a bit different from the usual!
Ariel · 18 November 2004 · Chapter 1
ROTFLMAO!!! Oh, can I relate to this! Very cleverly done. Thank you!
Author's reply
You're welcome! Glad I could give you a chuckle!
GamgeeFest · 17 November 2004 · Chapter 1
Gandalf in need of a fix. Now *that's* scary! Very cute and funny. Boromir and Legolas are the smart ones, never getting hooked on that poison. Now they get to sit back and watch everyone else be miserable. I feel for Sam when everyone finds out he still has a bit more stash. They're going to pounce on him, lol. Thanks for the laugh!
Author's reply
Oh yes! Gandalf had probably been smoking for hundreds of years! Gimli and Aragorn had been smoking, I'm sure for decades. The hobbits are younger, and though they had not been smoking as long, I would imagine they smoked even more often. I like to believe that the variety of tobacco in JRRT's M-e is not as nasty as the modern stuff, but it was definitely addictive, as Gandalf admitted in Moria. As to Legolas and Boromir, well, Elves probably never smoked since it would offend their Elven senses, and pipe-weed was not known in the South, so Boromir had probably never even heard of it until his journey. As for Sam, can you imagine what kind of "emergency" he might think he would need pipe-weed for? LOL! Glad I gave you a giggle.
good_one_pip · 16 November 2004 · Chapter 1
Clever! I had no idea where this one was going. Quite amusing. I'd never thought about how hard it would have been to give up their "habit" of pipeweed. An interesting look at things.
Author's reply
Well, you know, Gandalf told Pippin in Moria that he had been "too long without smoke", so I figured that would go for all the smokers in the group. I got to thinking about it when I noticed that Legolas suddenly wanted to go outside as soon as Merry and Pippin passed out the Longbottom Leaf in Isengard. Now why would he do a thing like that, do you think? 8-D
Kitty · 16 November 2004 · Chapter 1
*snickers* That was funny! I can feel with Boromir and Legolas, as I myself hate smoking. After plagued by it from all the others, they have indeed reason to be smug!
Author's reply
I thought it a bit amusing. Imagine them trying to stay upwind of everyone else all the time. And of course everyone else is going to smell like smoke.
Bodkin · 15 November 2004 · Chapter 1
You can tell so much that the epic was Of Its Time in this - Legolas and Boromir appear the odd ones for not puffing endlessly on the old pipeweed, whereas now they could invoke all kinds of laws on passive smoking. I love the image of all the weed-deprived members of the party snarling at each other - and at L and B particularly for not feeling the effects. Seriously entertaining image of L and B standing to one side feeling slightly smug - and also actually of them joined in something against the rest. Not one of the more usual parnerships.

*Giggle* I could just see the lawsuits now: "Famed Wizard and Companions Implicated in Second-hand Smoke Suit by Former Friends" It definitely gives them something in common, doesn't it? Can't you just see them giving one another Looks every time one of their companions gets a bit snappish? I first got the plot bunny for this when I was doing the CotW summary for "Flotsam and Jetsam" and noticed how as soon as Merry and Pippin had provided everyone with pipe-weed, Legolas suddenly got the urge for fresh air. Hmm...
Lamiel · 15 November 2004 · Chapter 1
Ha! Laughed and laughed at this. Ah, poor Boromir and Legolas. Putting up with the smell of the stuff is bad enough, but then to have to deal with the tempers when they run out... there should be an extra medal for those two. Thank you for a nice lift to my day. And that's a clever title, too.
Author's reply
Boromir and Legolas were definitely outnumbered in the Fellowship by smokers. But at least it gave them something in common. I can see them sticking together for a few days, kind of keeping a low profile and rolling their eyes at one another when the tempers flare. I'm glad it brightened your day. And you are the only one so far who's picked up on the title, *grin*!
SharonB · 15 November 2004 · Chapter 1
LOL, that last part was precious. SO they are all going theough nicotine withdrawl. No wonder the lot is grumpy. This was cute. Thanks.
Author's reply
Oh, yes, withdrawal for the smokers! *Not* a pretty picture,LOL! Glad you liked it!
Larner · 15 November 2004 · Chapter 1
Yes, a week should do it. Lovely blending of reality into the mix. Love it!
Author's reply
I just thought it might be a bit of a problem. It's not like they can run down to the corner store for a pouch of Old Toby or Longbottom Leaf. *grin*
Imrahoil · 15 November 2004 · Chapter 1
Oh no, I didn't even see what you were getting at up to the last sentence. It's nice to start lunch break with a good story - goes away, still sniggering quietly -.
Author's reply
Glad I was able to give you a chuckle! I like stories for lunch, myself!
