· Chapter 3: Concerning Ladders
I was so glad to be reminded of this one GW. And I still don't know the answer to the last question. Having spent the afternoon wrapping my Dad's presents for my 3 year old Nephew so I might have a good idea! Why can't children's toys come in square boxes?
Author's reply
I say we need more things that come in square boxes! Gift wrapping is hard enough without the challenge of wrapping ladders and umbrellas and recliners! (Yes, I had to wrap a chair once and I am still complaining about it.) Thank heavens video games come in boxes that wrap easily! Thanks for reading and reviewing.

· Chapter 3: Concerning Ladders
He wants a ladder, and for it to be wrapped as a surprise, does he? And even if one does managed to wrap a ladder, how does one disguise it?
Dear Pippin, and he knows he has Merry over a--over a ladder! Heh!
Author's reply
This time Pippin does have the upper hand. I can't imagine disguising a ladder without taking it completely apart, can you? LOL Maybe Merry did.

Small children and presents just seem destined to bring disasters somehow. Lovely reissue of a story I just love anyway.
And Pippin's warning Frodo about what might happen if he's not careful with the decorations he found? Hehehehehehe!
Author's reply
Glad you enjoyed this one again. Yes, Frodo got his warning a bit too late, didn't he? LOL

Silly little hobbit. He should learn not to scout around for Yule gifts since you could turn into a Yule decoration for it!
Author's reply
You know how it is with curious Tooks. They are into everything all the time. LOL

Oh my, yes. My little was so wound up about her birthday this year and when she asked me if I was having a party,I said no. She looked shocked and said "But why, Mama?" And it was dreadfully hard to explain why things change when you're older. But your Frodo was definitely right on target - it's watching the little ones get excited that makes the holidays fun. Well written!
Author's reply
Thank you. A comment that someone made on LJ caused me to write this last year. I think everyone goes through one holiday when they are between being excited and learning to share the holiday with others more in the focus. Glad that you enjoyed it and thank you for reviewing!

Thanks for the response GW but what I actually meant was, What was Frodo doing looking in the cellar AFTER everyone else seems to be in bed, if not quite asleep? It doesn't sound quite like a legitimate errand for that time of night! *g*
Author's reply
Oh, I always think of Frodo as a bit restless and the sort to be up and wondering around when everyone else is asleep. I figured that since he was older that he would be up after Merry and Pippin were asleep. As to why he originally chose the cellar to roam about in, well, I never did explain that. I'm not sure I considered it when I originally wrote this one.

· Chapter 2: Making Merry, Merry
This is just so true. The year you realise that your kid sister is far more excited about your birthday than you are. Or that Christmas is just a day. It takes a while to learn that providing pleasure for others is actually more gratifying than receiving it.
Frodo's advice is very wise. Enjoy it through the eyes of others - and be glad of what it does bring. Rescue Pippin from bossy-but-well-meaning Pearl and settle down with some good food in the company of friends.
Author's reply
I remember that let down feeling and was talking about it with someone just the other day. It seems you plan and plan and it's over in the blink of an eye and there is a year when you come to terms with that feeling. Glad you enjoyed Frodo's advice. I do think that half of the fun is surprising others and enjoying their company once you out-grow Santa. There's still a bit of magic it's just harder to find.

Pippin makes a very cute Yule fairy. Perhaps he should sit at the top of the tree! And I can see where Merry learned his Yuletime threat to sleepless hobbit lads.
Author's reply
Yes, Merry was quoting the words of his father but the trouble is that Pippin didn't take him seriously on his threat. LOL I think Pippin would have made a great tree topper, except I suspect that they would never have gotten him to sit still. Happy Holidays!

Brilliant timing for re-posting this GW as I am in the middle of my pre-Yule blues. Being single is, sometimes, not much fun. Thanks for giving me a clue how to deal with it!
Author's reply
I hope you have a lovely holiday and I know what you mean. Since my 'little one' has been all grown up the holidays aren't what they used to be. Glad this story helped a bit and thank you for reading!

Mostly I like my imagination just fine but, just occasionally, I wish I had a camera in ME! Great stuff GW - Now! Just what was Frodo doing down there anyway?
Author's reply
Frodo found the Yule decorations and then left his lantern when he went up to get Merry so that he could show him all of the old decorations but a certain little Took beat Frodo to the decorations while Frodo was waking Merry. LOL

Awww! Terrific, GW! I apologize for not responding right away...this story was definitely one of those lovely holiday gems. Its so true about losing the magic at a certain age then picking a bit of it up by celebrating through a young child. I can’t imagine any of these three spending Yule away from one another. Hope your Yule was a grand one...happy holidays! Thanks for sharing. :-)

Funny, I was just about to take this one down now that the season is over and tonight I find two new reviews for it. Guess I will leave it up for a bit longer. I usually take these down like Christmas decorations. LOL I had a lovely holiday and thank you for asking. Hope you did too!

Pippin stood still for a whole minute? lol. I remember that feeling of Christmas suddenly seeming pretty pointless. I would even find excuses not to go visit the family. But you do get over it and find other things to enjoy about it. Loved the story of Primula challenging everyone to a chess match and how everyone would hide from her. And I'm sure Pippin enjoyed his Yule snack with his two best friends. Lovely story. And Merry Christmas.
Author's reply
So glad that you enjoyed this one. I think everyone goes through what Merry did in one way or another. Except maybe, folks like Pippin who never lose the magic. I was more of a Merry on this one. Happy Holidays and thanks for the review!

This was wonderful!!! I loved how you captured that let down feeling we get as we get older and lose some of the magic of the holidays. It always wonderful to see "Yule" through the eyes of lil ones.

I found this story extremely poignient, as I went through the same thing as Merry a few years back. I remember well what its like to suddenly find holidays don't mean the same thing to you as they did when you were a child. Thank you for this story and Happy Holidays.

I remember that feeling also. It takes a while to figure out how to go about enjoying your holiday after that, but if you're lucky, you come up with something. There is nothing like the magic of Christmas when you are a child. Thanks for the review and Happy Holidays to you also!

I have been lurking at SoA for almost a year now without ever leaving a review. This story however, finally broke my lurker status. This was one of the sweetest Hobbit stories I've EVER read. Holiday disenchantment is one of the most painful realizations about growing up. You've captured it perfectly with this bittersweet story. You are one of my favorite Hobbity writers!
Author's reply
Why thank you so much! I am honored to be your first review and so glad that you enjoy my version of the hobbits. A friend posted something on her LJ that gave me this idea. I appreciate this lovely review very much. It's like an early Christmas present. Have a Happy Holiday and feel free to lurk about any of my stories that strike your fancy!

I loved this! It`s good to see Pippin looking after Merry for once, and to see Merry share his thoughts with Frodo. He is growing up and wants to share Pippin`s joy in things, but hasn`t yet learned to share it through him properly.
Author's reply
Lots of folks get depressed for one reason or another during the holidays, but that point at which you become one of the older folks and a little bit of the magic slips away for you is very difficult. I thought that Merry might be somewhere between Frodo's grown-up Yule season and Pippin's young child Yule. I am so glad that you liked it. It gave Frodo a chance to play the older cousin while letting Merry be the one in need of help. Happy Holidays!
