Tedicus, An interesting relationship going on here Haleth. Mystery and humor with lots of sexual inuendo, this is my bag baby! I'm glad I didn't give up at the begining with the lemming myth business, the banter and introspection are making this a quite entertaining tale. Looking forward to where this is going.

Author's reply

Thank you, Tedicus I'm happy you're enjoying the story. You're right. Lemmings do not, in fact, throw themselves off cliffs. They will crowd each other off cliffs or drown if they fall into unfamiliar bodies of water, but they aren't suicidal. Haleth

Anna Wing · 18 March 2006 · Chapter 26: A Day in Wilderland

I've been reading this from its inception, and enjoying it very much. Frankly, I didn't much care for the whimsy in the beginning, but it is growing and developing in very interesting ways. I look forward particularly to finding out what Haleth actually is, because the way that I read it the hints seems to indicate that she is not in fact human, or if she was is not any longer. And in Middle-earth there is a very limited list of things she could be, since she is surely not an elf, dwarf, orc, balrog, ent or hobbit. The possibilities I am considering are (i) stray wizard (Tolkien said at one point that there were more than five) who has forgotten what she is, or (ii) mortal who accepted a starter Ring of Power from Celebrimbor in an unwise moment (Tolkien did say that the Mirdain made more than just the Great Rings). It is very amusing to speculate and I await future episodes with anticipation.

Author's reply

Thank-you, Anna I'm glad you persevered through the initial silliness (there is a lot of it) and are finding the story a bit more enjoyable. I am very flattered that you're putting so much thought into Haleth's identity. I hope you'll forgive me if I don't divulge the information at this time. So far, only one person has managed/bothered to puzzle out her origins. I hope you continue to find the tale entertaining. Haleth

Hi Haleth! Haleth Singing crude songs is one of my many favorite moments in this delightful story.... Thank you for so thoroughly entertaining Inglor and me ;-D... - Barbara

Author's reply

Thank you, Barbara You might not say that if you actually heard Haleth sing... Haleth

Bodkin · 18 March 2006 · Chapter 26: A Day in Wilderland

Experiencing something new - yes, that must be rather earth-shattering for an elf past his first couple of millennia. I love the picture in my head of a wide-eyed, open-mouthed Inglor. And, surely, much more satisfying for Haleth than losing her temper at his managing ways. (Still don't get why they're avoiding Eryn Lasgalen, though - although I'm sure Inglor knows. And just doesn't want to say.) Brilliant stuff.

Author's reply

Thank-you again, Bodkin I guess it would be a surprise to discover something new. Inglor is so certain he's experienced everything before. Haleth's lewd ditty lifts him out of himself and shows him that there are still new things in the world. Inglor has (he believes) good reason for avoiding Eryn Lasgalen. And you're right. He doesn't want to explain them and will likely manage to avoid clarifying. Thanks again. Haleth

kelsey · 17 March 2006 · Chapter 26: A Day in Wilderland

Haleth is such character. I love reading her! This chapter was wonderful, just like all the others. But when did Haleth and Ingor meet in Laketown? I didn't miss that, did I? Your story has a lot of open ends, but the mystery is enticing. Too many authors just throw everything into your lap. I espeically loved how you bought up the point that an elf doesn't have many new experiences after living so long. I don't think many people remember this, but you sure did, and you played it to the fullest. Bravo ;)

Author's reply

Thank-you, kelsey. I'm glad you're enjoying the story. You haven't missed the two of them meeting. It's a separate story and it's somewhere in the editting process. In theory, the little mysteries and allusions scattered through this story are the seeds of future stories. It's been quite challenging posting the this particular tale at Stories of Arda as people aren't shy about calling me on the loose ends and inconsistencies. Thanks again. Haleth

Lyn · 17 March 2006 · Chapter 26: A Day in Wilderland

More delightful traveling with Haleth! ^_^; Why do I feel such sympathy for Inglor? Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent with others!

Author's reply

Thank-you, Lyn. I think anyone who's had the pleasure of being on a long trip with a volatile person would sympathize with Inglor. He's finally beginning to learn the fine art of distraction. Haleth

Bodkin · 16 March 2006 · Chapter 25: Dwarven Etiquette Lesson

If Haleth thinks Surprisingly, Inglor was very well versed in the etiquette of dwarves and he must have studied it in Rivendell - does that mean she was already well versed in the etiquett of dwarves and didn't need to study it in Rivendell? Mysteriouser and mysteriouser. Frar is remarkably open - and I love Inglor's response to his wish not to discuss why the Palantir was distracting the lads. And I wonder why he wishes to avoid Eryn Lasgalen and the two he refers to as Thranduil and Celeborn. Haleth is horrified at discovering herself being overcome with speeches of elven delicacy. While Inglor is amused. These two just kill me. (I hope Meandering through Mandos is coming on for my further entertainment.)

Author's reply

Thank-you, Bodkin Regarding Haleth and the dwarves; yes. Frar knows trouble when he sees it. He's sending them to his boss to avoid any unfortunate misunderstandings. He'd likely send messengers to Thorin II, warning him to expect them. Thanks again. Haleth

ziggy · 15 March 2006 · Chapter 25: Dwarven Etiquette Lesson

Hm.There is a LOT more to Inglor than meets the eye... what is going on here? Is he just playing the innocent with Haleth? I havwe thought for a little while that he is waiting for HER to catch up in a way...

Author's reply

Thank-you, Ziggy There is a lot more to Inglor than meets the eye. Then again, there would almost have to be, wouldn't there? Haleth doesn't really know that much about him. She makes all kinds of assumptions based on the way he behaves, and you know what they say about assuming thing. Thanks again! Haleth

Fire · 15 March 2006 · Chapter 25: Dwarven Etiquette Lesson

I just read the entire story so far and I love it... These are some interesting characters you have here. I would love to read about Haleth's other stays at Rivendell (Lay of the silver ware?? sounds like an iterresting story) And what of being fished out of the lake? I didn't know the palantiri could be used for entertainment but it seems to be quite entertaning..... do we have to guess at what you could see if you want to... or does my imagination go whre it should'nt ?? ;)

Author's reply

Thank-you, Fire Lay of the Silver Ware? You've just given me an idea! Thank-you! From what I've read of them, the palatiri could be used for a history lesson rather than entertainment but dwarves can be very resourceful. Haleth

perelleth · 14 March 2006 · Chapter 25: Dwarven Etiquette Lesson

I agree with Inglor, Haleth begins to sound like an Elf... "How could nothing be distracting?" Haleth wondered " Now, that sounded very Inglorish, didn't it? :-) The Book of Calming Thoughts seems like a very practical reading, and something she might have carried along, for advanced practice... Yet Inglor was lucky that she had time enough in Rivendel to go through it... And now we find out that he's so well-versed in Dwarvish etiquette... I'm adding clues in my list of clues...

Author's reply

Nothing is distracting. That really does sound like Inglor. I never thought of that until you pointed it out. Inglor should probably send an expensive thank-you present to the author or the Book of Calming Thoughts. It's likely to save him from a few tongue lashings. Regarding Inglor's identity, please let me know how your clues add up. Thanks again. Haleth

Lyn · 14 March 2006 · Chapter 25: Dwarven Etiquette Lesson

My favorite story! Just a couple of suggestions: Haleth faired a little better. I believe the spelling is "fared", from the verb that brought you "farewell---fare-thee-well" "We'll found out soon enough" I think it should be, "We'll find out soon enough" as the contraction in full would be, "We will find out soon enough" Thank you for sharing your talent!

Author's reply

Thank-you, Lyn Once again, thank-you for pointing out the errors. I should have caught them. This is going to sound really presumptuous, but do you ever beta read? (Please?) Haleth

ziggy · 12 March 2006 · Chapter 24: Interlude III: In Durin's Halls

So Inglor is still being 'protected' from this terrible harpy!!! What is the mystery surrounding Haleth and Rivendell? WHEN did Inglor fish her out of the Long Lake?WHY does Elladan distrust her so? oh- just questions and more frustrating questions!! Haleth missed her great chance didnt she - I assume there are many more missed opportunites to come. Saeros is lovley- like him. More please- It might be interesting to see how Inglor would react if Saeros made a bit of a fuss of HAleth.... And I love the way the dwarves are spending too much playing witht he palantir - I can just imagine the tricks they might get up to.

Author's reply

Thank-you, ziggy. It's Haleth's impression that Inglor is being protected from her. She's over-sensitive about Inglor and it's probably colouring her perception. She's likely over-reacting to Elladan and the separation from Inglor, but she hasn't discussed it with anyone and no one has explained the situation to her. She's just jumping to her own conclusions based on incomplete information. WHEN did Inglor fish her out of the Long Lake? That story is actually written but it needs a beta reader to pick it apart before I'm willing to make it public. Poor Haleth. A chance comes along and she doesn't know what to do with it. And whatever you're thinking about the dwarves and the palantir? You're probably right. Thanks again for reviewing. Haleth

perelleth · 12 March 2006 · Chapter 24: Interlude III: In Durin's Halls

Oh! The palantir had its own history -and cache memory, and delete option! -Féanor was a genius indeed! And I loved the fhought of the poor foreman just figuring out how to erase the traces of improper use before returning it! I'm still howling!!!

Author's reply

Thank-you, perelleth. The palantir does have a memory cache. I took the idea from the chapter The Palantiri in Unfinished Tales. This most likely wasn't what Tolkien had in mind when he described how the palantiri worked, though. Haleth

Bodkin · 12 March 2006 · Chapter 24: Interlude III: In Durin's Halls

I do like the thought of the Palantir becoming a bit of a liability. Very practical dwarf, that Frar. Give the problem to someone else. Quickly.

Author's reply

Thank-you, Bodkin. The palantiri were powerful artifacts and could be very useful. However, there is always a danger of a powerful artifact being misused. It could also attract the attention of powerful people who would like the chance to misuse it. Or powerful people who think it's theirs and want it back. There wasn't much else Frar could do with the palantir. He couldn't keep it; it was disrupting the work. If the King of Gondor somehow learnd that the dwarves had a palantir, he would want it back. Frar could have sent it directly to Aragorn, but he would have risked Thorin II's disapproval for simply giving away a Seeing Stone. So Frar is happy, but it has complicated things for Inglor and Haleth. Thanks again. Haleth

Bodkin · 9 March 2006 · Chapter 23: The Stay in Rivendell

Poor Haleth. Becoming soft in the presence of an elf. It's probably just as well she's usually as sharp as a scalpel - or she wouldn't have survived anywhere near as long as she has. And Rivendell must be a good place for a bit of skill-honing. And reading Quenya is yet another of her talents. And visiting Rivendell too many times to be too sure of how many. But she's still a disaster area anywhere in the vicinity of Inglor. How does he do it? He seems so harmless! I just love them. More! Lots more!

Author's reply

Thank-you, Bodkin You've got to watch the apparently harmless ones. They can cause an infinite amount of trouble without even being aware of it. Haleth

perelleth · 7 March 2006 · Chapter 23: The Stay in Rivendell

This stay in Rivendell is weighing on poor Haleth more than she suspected! Now she's caught sneaking into Inglor's rooms! and she must be still blinking at how easy it was to set the elf in motion!!! But I suppose that all the training she managed to learn in the dusty tomes shall be put to good use shortly!:-) Yes, I suspected that she would be older than what she seems, but to the point of not remembering! Wow! She's had a troubled life indeed... And now you go and tell us that Inglor saved her from the cold waters of Long Lake, long time ago... she dived there to get rid of him, didn't she? :-) Wonderful, engaging, funny... but now i also feel for her. And I am so glad that you seem to have regained the posting pace...;-)

Author's reply

Thank-you, perelleth Haleth probably isn't accustomed to staying in one spot for any length of time. Her worst nightmare is probabaly a lie in the sun and do nothing vacation. And you've probably guessed correctly about those old books. Thanks again. Haleth

Yelena_of_Baelandalai · 7 March 2006 · Chapter 4: T'Ang

LOL!! T'Ang! Very crafty use of modern world stuff in Middle Earth. Did you know that tang was originally created for space travel? This could connect with Earendil's uses!

Author's reply

Thank-you, Yelena I can't take the credit...or maybe I should say the blame...for the T'ang idea. My husband came up with it. I don't think I want to know what made him think of it. Thanks again. Haleth

kels · 7 March 2006 · Chapter 23: The Stay in Rivendell

This whole story is great, and I love your character! She is quite hilarious. Ingor is so adorable, too. Brilliant, please let me know when you update again (very soon!... hopefully).

Author's reply

Thank-you, kels. I'm glad you're enjoying the story and the characters. Haleth

Lyn · 7 March 2006 · Chapter 19: Interlude II : The Palantir

This is one of my most favorite stories! Just a couple of suggestions: She could chose the manner in which she would obey, though. Should be: She could choose the manner in which she would obey, though. I choose, I chose, I have chosen, but I could choose, would choose, should choose. bells peal; the pealing of the bells was a pleasant sound. "But this weights heavily on my mind." should be: "But this weighs heavily on my mind." You weigh something; it weighs a lot. The weight of it was a lot. (The verb, to weigh ) (The noun, weight, has a T)

Author's reply

Thank-you Lyn. I'm glad you're enjoying the story and I'm very glad you pointed out the errors (which are now corrected). I can't drive the image of bells covered in citrus rind from my mind. I guess it serves me right. Again, thank-you for reviewing and if you find any more errors, please don't hesitate to point them out. Haleth

ziggy · 5 March 2006 · Chapter 22: The Hall of Fire

I enjoyed catching up with Haleth and Inglor. The style is as witty as ever and made me laugh- thank you! Inglor is getting more and more mysterious- what is interesting is hte change in the power balance once they get to Rivendell- I supose htat is natural, but you have built this up with Haleth's telling Elrohir about his finding her and following her. And the constant questions- do you know who he is... just feeds the mysteries. Haleth has clearly a 'past' but Inglor's naivety is beginnig to feel more than just that... I Like the detaisl that create three dimensions in this, the boots that were made for Haleth give her a past outsdie this tale, but is not the only one. I have such a clear picture of Haleth in my head. Cant wait to find out who inglor is.. and head Haleth's sputtering reaction!

Author's reply

Thank-you, ziggy This story is a lot of fun to right. It all started out as a joke and very quickly got way out of control. It's surprising that Haleth doesn't ask Inglor more questions about his background. Maybe she has and he hasn't really answered. For all that he seems naive, he really has a way of directing their conversations into unexpected places...and away from the topic. Thank-you again for reviewing. Haleth

perelleth · 5 March 2006 · Chapter 22: The Hall of Fire

Now! Keep wondering. How old is Haleth? I suppose it took them some time to recover form her tale, in the Hall of Fire, and I wonder what Inglor made of it.... But surely Elladan got what he deserved. Poor Haleth. She seems to be quite tense and suspicious, maybe seing thing,s although Elrohir's appearance would not do much to appease his nerves, what with his quetions and all... So he just began to follow her and now she follows him.... Very itnerseting I'd really much like to see hthe background of this post. Meanwhile, i am content to follow them. And I like her more every chapter. DYEt she's so hard on herself! :-)But she managed to catch Elrohir nicely, too! Go HAleth!

Author's reply

Thank-you, perelleth How old is Haleth? She's older than she looks. She has good reason for being hard on herself. It would be rather surprising to wake up in the middle of the night and find your host at the side of your bed and in the mood for conversation. I guess Elrohir felt the questions couldn't wait until the morning. Haleth

Bodkin · 3 March 2006 · Chapter 22: The Hall of Fire

Haleth seems to be quite well acquainted with the sons of Elrond. And Elladan required a song of her, huh? That story sounds very allegorical - telling Elladan he is looking at the wrong villain, perhaps. I don't know that Haleth is being quite fair to herself in comparing herself to an ugly dog. Or to Inglor in suggesting that he is innocence personified. But maybe I'm reading too much into her tale. Elrohir's enquiry produced a very interesting reply. I think I'm as intrigued by the characters of Haleth and Inglor as I am by what they're doing!

Author's reply

Thank-you, Bodkin. That is exactly why Haleth chose that particular story. She can't compare to an elf for beauty, but she has other worthy qualities. Then again, she does seem overly sensitive to insult while she's in Rivendell. Haleth

perelleth · 28 February 2006 · Chapter 21: An Inauspicious Arrival

Oh, such a treat! Three chapters on a row! As usual, I have more questions than smart comments. Shall we ever get to know more circumstances about Haleth and how she met Inglor and why she so mistreats herself and why she is called a thief? Shall we, shall we, shall we? The reciprocal reluctance between her and Imladris in general was very amusing, but I fear that you are punishng her most underservedly, if in a very amusing way. Peas through her nose! Now that was a scene I would have paid for seeing...

Author's reply

Thank-you again, Perelleth Questions and smart comments are more than welcome. They're inspirational. There is a story describing how Inglor and Haleth meet. It was started a few years ago and still isn't ready for public posting. Haleth might be a little over-sensitive about how the people in Rivendell have received her. And the peas through the nose was based on an actual incident. I don't recommend it. Thank-you again. Haleth

perelleth · 28 February 2006 · Chapter 20: The Mystery is Solved

forst apologies for missing last chapter, but I've been away for sometime... Dwarves and ELrdon's sons! I don't know hat is more exciting to looking forward to! :-) But it seems that Inglor and Haleth are slowly getting used to the other's tips... what! Haleth is beginning to speak like an elf! :-) and Inglor is slowly beginning to be mildly sarcastic in a manner she can understand...:-) I can figure the girls' excitement at the elf's possessions! Adn mercifully, HAleth was spared the agony of explaining "fetish" to the Elf... now that would have been an itnersting conversation! :-)

Author's reply

Thank-you, perelleth. I guess it was inevitable that Inglor and Haleth would begin to understand how to communicate with each other. Having a common language isn't always enough. They have a completely different frame of reference. I'm trying to imagine Haleth explaining the word 'fetish' to Inglor. She'd be beet red and he'd be utterly confused. I might have to try that some time. Thank-you again! Haleth

Kathy_SFF · 20 February 2006 · Chapter 21: An Inauspicious Arrival

Poor Haleth. I would really love to know a bit more about both Inglor's and Haleth's background (so much mystery). How bad can Haleth's luck be...choking on her food then having a nose bleed. Can't wait for the next chapter...maybe Inglor can ask Haleth some more "difficult"questions and take her mind off what happened at dinner .

Author's reply

Thank-you, Kathy_SSF. Haleth really does have bad luck at the dinner table. She's probably a little too sensitive about the elves' reactions to her. I'm glad you're enjoying the mystery behind the characters. There are hints of Haleth's background through the story. Inglor, on the other hand, doesn't really give many hints about his exact origins. Thanks again.
