This chapter was very different from the others we have receieved as of late. It was very good; haunting, meloncholy, sad. But it also had its fun moments; the letters and the idea of Legolas bounding through the doors and injuring Herenion's nose. Great chapter! Lily

· Chapter 52: Letters
A long and sweeping chapter with a lot going on. I liked the Blind Man's Bluff game and the letters. Frankly, I cannot imagine Rhinure in Minas Tirith but you never know! And your picture of the sea longing was touching.
Author's reply
Hmmm, you telling me politely to cut down on the chapter lengths?! ;) To tell you the truth I can't imagine Rhinure in Minas Tirith either. If she does go - it is going to be VERY awkward. Shudder - might have to get her a new wardrobe. Black on a wedding day doesn't sound like a good idea.
At least Legolas will be there to smooth things over. He might need lots of practising though. Should get her back quickly so that he can start.

· Chapter 52: Letters
I like seeing the thoughts of the future in this chapter, away from just the daily events in the forest. A wedding, news from the outside, speaking of the sea longing and the need to sail, partings, who would go and who would not - I think it advances the plot to lay these things on the table. Legolas must find it odd to think of himself as newly married, and then knowing he must leave soon and she is unlikely to come with him. I wonder if Thranduil has any regrets about forcing the marriage, knowing Legolas might end up parted from Rhinure forever?
Author's reply
I think this is hurting Legolas more than he is letting on. He knows in the back of his mind that he might be parted from his wife. More pressure - but for one it is something he did. Or at least something in him which is a potential cause for tension.
As for Thranduil - he probably regrets the whole thing. But given the choice to do it all again, I don't know if he would change anything. Duty comes before everything else - no? And besides, now that they are together at least they have a chance to work things out. If Thranduil never pushed the marriage, they would never have met. Then where would have the two been? Alone. :(

Fabulous chapter, Fan! I like the way it starts off in the hope of a new wedding and ends in a certain amount of despair for old ones. I loved Legolas' slightly dangerous edge in the scene with his warriors, and the clear love there is between him and his father.
Now I must go back and read this story from the beginning, so I know what's been going on. How nice to have a good long read in store for over Christmas :)
Author's reply
Thank you - I love positive reviews. They make my day - especially now when I am stuck at home with a cold. :( However, I do want to warn you - this fic is nearing 200,000 words and God only knows when it will finish. So you are in for a LONG LONG read. Hope you like the rest of it too.

I've been a big fan of this story since I first read this over at ffn, and I'm so glad it's found another home - and another lot of admirers! Anyway, this chapter was so beautiful - and you've captured the personalities of each of the letter-writers perfectly. The discussion of the Sea-Longing was so lyrical and, well, perfect. This chapter definitely requires a tissue-warning!
Author's reply
*Fan hands Flo a box of tissues* Am very sorry for making you cry. I really didn't mean it - okay I did. ;) The letters took me a long time to write. Glad you enjoyed the chapter.
Isn't this a lovely site btw? It lets me directly reply to reviews. Yeah!

· Chapter 51: The Lost Ones
I enjoyed seeing the meeting of the Avari leaders. It was good to finally hear why they had formed an alliance with the wood elves, and what would motivate them to keep or break that alliance.
On the personal side, though, I think we get a good understanding of exactly why the Sacrifice is called the Sacrifice. It is apparently a literal term, and suddenly it seems that for Rhinure, there is no good end. And if that is true for Rhinure, I guess it is also true for Legolas. Her position is truly tough, and it seems we have to hope that these two truly fall in love for that may be what helps them personally survive. I think...I keep changing my mind depending on what angle I look!
Author's reply
I hope every day that Rhinure and Legolas fall in love and every day my muse makes me write something that makes me shudder. I am working on it but sometimes my characters just decided to take matters into their own hands. I have started to dream about this fic.
Must go to see a therapist.

How wonderful to see an update from you, Fan! Poor Rhinure. This chapter makes clear just how difficult her position is. I am annoyed by all these people who are willing to "sacrifice" her for these lost kin. Life is already hard enough without making rules to make it harder.
Author's reply
I am very annoyed with these people as well. I have retribution planned for Cothion at least. Am working on the rest. And don't worry - too much. Rhinure is not going to go down so easily. *fingers crossed*

Interesting look at some of the emotional complications of life for both Legolas and Arandur. And maybe for Rhinure. If you are going to be married to someone until the end of Arda (and maybe beyone), then you would hope for love, I would think. But duty and honor are powerful and worth acting on too.

Ah I wish I could leave a longer review but work beckons me. A very tense filled chapter. I am glad Erutinin did not die, but it was such an irony that he was defeated the same way Cothion was defeated. Speaks to Rhinure's state of mind at the time of her own trial, and we know Istion did not perhaps do this for the purest of Avari motives. Hmm, wonder if the same can be claimed of Rhinure.
Author's reply
I didn't realise that any of the Avari motives were "pure". The poor things really don't understand themselves very well. Or maybe they work on the plausible deniability principle - if they never accept anything, no matter how obvious, they can always deny it ever happened.

Oh my, this was an excellent chapter... You describe the interactions of the Avari amongst themselves in such an excellent way! Both with description and with dialogue--the latter of which is decidedly the harder bit to do well, though you seem to have mastered it just fine! :-) --you give these people dimension and life. I love reading about them, and am coming more and more to care about what happens to them.
I do, however, worry constantly over Legolas and what may happen to his heart in all this...
I've even started having bizarre dreams about it. :-) Stories do sometimes affect me this way...
I hope there will be more soon! (Don't you love readers who whine for updates, then the moment you give them one, they want more? we're all addicts here...
Thanks for an excellent chapter!
Author's reply
Don't worry - I dream about them too - a lot. Though mine are a little more 'plesant' since I am working a few chapters ahead - round about when Rhinure get back to Legolas. Yes - a lot more 'pleasant'.

The tension and high emotion of this chapter was great. The motivations of each player show how clearly emotions do rule the Avari - and one has to wonder the price each of them pays for hiding it. You have put much thought into this Avari culture, and you are sharing it wonderfully.

This was really a scary chapter. I was afraid that one of the combatants was going to kill the other and I did not want either one to die. The Avari are an incredibly fierce people and they think they don't let emotions affect them!
Author's reply
I must say when I wrote this - I was thinking of the Roman gladiators and their salute - "We who are about to die salute you" version. I thought it was such an Avari line - but a little too Hollywood but it helped set the tone in my mind.

That was a very good chapter...but I cannot help but wish that Erutunin had won. Of course, he did make the best choice, but I have the impression that Istion will cause trouble somehow. I hope I am wrong ;)
It is amazing how manage to include us in the Avari universe. You still have some chapter centered on the Avari left, haven't you? And a bit of Erutunin too, no?
Continue to write! You're doing a marvelous job!
Author's reply
I wish Erutunin had won too but I decided against it. I would have had to seperate him from his family and even I was not soo cruel. As for Istion - he is Avari - OF COURSE he will cause trouble. Though it may be of the good variety.
There are many more Avari centric chapters left - but only a few more specifically before Rhinure gets back.

· Chapter 48: Sparring
Legolas really has responsibilities here. They do weigh on him. It's really too bad that has so many of the worries that come with having a wife and so few of the joys (as of yet anyway).
The contrast between expected Avari behavior and wood-elf behavior is nicely shown in the scene with Legolas and Erutunin. What seems normal to one, seems bizarre to the other.
So what's with the orcs, I wonder? And the idea of Rhinure living up to her title is kind of scary.
I liked seeing Thranduil's musings. His hope that he had chosen well for Legolas was touching, but I was also interested in how well you show his acumen. The sparring scene was great and I loved the "two elflings."

· Chapter 48: Sparring
I think my favorite parts of this chatper were seeing how some of the Avari saw Legolas through new eyes - they think only through the filter of what they know (as we all do) and I give them credit for looking beyond what the know to see him in a different light.
The orc is both descpicable and yet worthy of pity. That hunger would lead him to tell all he knows. But, now the wood elves know more than they did, and Thranduil is crafty enough I know he will figure it out. And Legolas' line about sharing information was wonderful.
I loved the end scene - father and son sparring as they were. It was fitting Thranduil would win, and the love he has for his son just shines through.
I am little worried about all the comments about Rhinure possibly fulfilling her position - those comments certainly raised the tension politically for waht is to come. I am glad that the two seem to be falling in love.

· Chapter 47: Home?
It was nice to see Rhinure with the children, she seemed comfortable with them. That gives me hope that she may wish to be a mother one day. Also of interest was that she seems to question in her heart where 'home' is - with Legolas, who she appears to be falling in love with - or with her people. Obviously, the best solution would be for her to have both. I am glad she is missing Legolas, though. I would, in her place. *grin*

· Chapter 47: Home?
I knew it! Even Avari children are adorable and full of curiousity like all others, yet it is tempered by their strict upbringing. It was so refreshing to see Rhinure lighten up a bit, that is not having to wear the Sacrificial mask as she always does. I think this is the most "herself" I have ever read her being, and I am liking it very much. Oh dear she just needs to give into this darn sexy and shinging prince, once and for all!

Rhinure's interaction with the children seems to allow her to talk freely in a way that she does no where else. Their honesty and simplicity seems to be good for her.
It's difficult to see how all this is going to resolve itself.
