Thank you! The muse has returned now so I should get down to writing the next chapter very soon. :)

Dreamflower · 5 May 2005 · Chapter 6: PART SIX: The Journey Continues

Oh my, Anso! It's good to see another chapter up. Now that Merry is conscious again, perhaps he and your muse will return! I loved this chapter with all its details, from the beginning, with Pippin's tears falling on Merry's face, to all the concern about packing up to leave the campsite. I love that Merry thought of getting rid of the fish, and that Aragorn had already taken care of it; and Boromir carrying Merry to the boat--what a lovely image! I'm looking forward to Frodo's recovery. They are not so very far now from splitting up. *sigh* Poor Boromir.

Author's reply

Thanks! Yes, poor Boromir. I haven`t decided if I`m going to have the story all the way to the breaking but the way things are going now it will be a very long one if I do, lol.

Bodkin · 5 May 2005 · Chapter 6: PART SIX: The Journey Continues

Merry would make a good Ranger, actually. In a hobbity way. He is very good at thinking all round a problem - like the fish. Who else, recovering from a nasty dose of poisoning would think to remove the body of the fish so that no other creature could be poisoned by it? Of course, I don't think he'd like the solitude that goes with the role. Or the lack of beer and partying. So maybe not. Glad they're recovering.

Author's reply

Thanks! Yes I think he would be a great Ranger too. He`d be great at anything he set his mind to I believe. :)

shirebound · 5 May 2005 · Chapter 6: PART SIX: The Journey Continues

Whew! I'm as relieved as Pippin and Aragorn that Merry and Frodo are on the mend. What an unexpected 'interlude' that was! "Merry watched as Aragorn surveyed their campsite for any telltale hints that anyone had been there" Very good! No matter what, Aragorn is always thinking like a Ranger.

Author's reply

Thank you! Yes, Aragorn will always be a Ranger, won`t he? :)

Lily Baggins · 20 April 2005 · Chapter 5: PART FIVE: Interlude

Feverish Frodo . . . *blissful sigh* Lovely here, all the TLC you have both hobbits receiving, as well as the decisions that must be faced on how best to care for them. Can I be awful and say I'm hoping that Frodo's hand needs draining? Yes, I'm awful. :) Looking very forward to more!

Author's reply

I`m glad you`re enjoying my first attempt at Frodo h/c! I usually just let Merry suffer all by himself, lol. :)

Mysterious Jedi · 20 April 2005 · Chapter 5: PART FIVE: Interlude

I am glad to see more so soon, but now you've left me desiring yet another update! <>< Saved from sin through Christ, MJ

Thank you! :)

Dreamflower · 20 April 2005 · Chapter 5: PART FIVE: Interlude

Such lovely tender care from Aragorn and the others. Poor Pippin--to see both Frodo *and* Merry struck down like that *has* to be utterly terrifying to the poor lad! It's a good thing Sam is able to comfort him. I'm glad I know they will be all right!

Author's reply

Thank you! Yes it was a tough night for Pippin, but Aragorn does know what to do. :)

shirebound · 20 April 2005 · Chapter 5: PART FIVE: Interlude

Yay for Strider! He's so calm and knowledgeable. And I like how Legolas assured Sam that watching Frodo was as important as watching the camp.

Author's reply

Thanks! Watching and caring for Frodo is essential to the qeust so guarding the camp really comes second when the Ring-bearer is struck down. :)

French Pony · 20 April 2005 · Chapter 5: PART FIVE: Interlude

Well, it looks as though everyone is in good hands. I'm glad they have Aragorn along with them. Getting injured out in the backwoods is a serious proposition, but they seem to be dealing with it calmly enough.

Thank you!

Analey · 19 April 2005 · Chapter 4: PART FOUR: A Fish Story

What a great story! Update soon!!

Author's reply

Thank you! The next part is up now. :)

Bodkin · 18 April 2005 · Chapter 4: PART FOUR: A Fish Story

I think it is probably a Very Good Thing that they did not eat that fish. And anything that did would now be floating belly up. Even the most modest exposure doesn't seem to be doing Merry much good - so I dread to think how Frodo is reacting. He might need someone to do his breathing for him, even. Don't leave him gasping for breath on the river-bank for too long, please. He needs oxygen.

Author's reply

Thank you! Part five is up now. :)

Thanks! I`m glad you like it. More is up now.

Lily Baggins · 16 April 2005 · Chapter 4: PART FOUR: A Fish Story

Guh. Just . . . guh---I love it. A paralyzing fish bite---that is the epitome of a perfect illness for Frodo and Merry to catch while on the river. Oh, this is yummy goodness, to quote Elwen. I see you're writing some Frodo h/c into this, and I'm so very, very excited about it. :) *squees*

Author's reply

Thanks! It`s all my "evil" beta`s idea, lol. It`s my first go at Frodo h/c (allthough I have practiced at Merry for some time) so I`m glad you like it. :) More is coming!

French Pony · 16 April 2005 · Chapter 4: PART FOUR: A Fish Story

That's a major league fish there. Something like that can't be natural to a freshwater environment. I smell a rat. And a suspicious fish. I hope they kept it, since Frodo and Merry look like they're in a bad way here. At least this'll learn them to use fishing poles.

Author's reply

They haven`t thrown the fish away yet and they did use fishing poles, that is untill this big fish started battling them. Thanks for reading!

Dreamflower · 16 April 2005 · Chapter 4: PART FOUR: A Fish Story

Don`t ‘what’ me. Did you think that not telling that your hand hurt you was going to help me?” Frodo looked at him sternly. “Merry. You know that any little scrape or injury can cause infection if it`s not looked after properly.” “You’re a fine one to talk. Are you any better? You weren’t intending to tell Strider at all, and you actually tried to hide your injury from Sam, and you know he sees everything Frodo. He knows you perhaps better than I do,” Merry said, looking over Frodo`s shoulder at the slumbering Sam. I love this part of the conversation; it takes one to know one. Pippin's not nearly so stoic as his cousins, so I think this must be a Brandybuck thing. LOL! I can just imagine Frodo and Merry in competition to see which one can keep a stiffer upper lip. And then to see this: Oh, how he wished he could take the Ring away from Frodo and bear his burden, and make his cousin happy and carefree and safe once more! But there was nothing he could do. Frodo had to go through with this and Merry would help him in any way that he could. He would not leave his side. It always gives me a little chill when either Merry or Pippin think about not leaving Frodo, when we know they will be forced to do so, willy-nilly. And Oooohhh...nasty cliffie! Poisoned by the fish? More, soon, I hope!

Author's reply

It`s just the thing Merry and Frodo would compete about isn`t it? :) I`m glad you liked it. I haven`t used cliffhangers much, but I`m glad this one worked out nice... :) More is up now.

shirebound · 16 April 2005 · Chapter 4: PART FOUR: A Fish Story

Eeeps! An evil, paralyzing fish bite! I love this hobbity h/c, Anso. Thank goodness Pippin woke up and knows what's going on. Oh, and I adore this line: ...Sam forgetting in his haste to reach his master that he couldn`t swim. :D

Author's reply

Thank you! Pippin would wake at an instant if one of his cousins were whimpering in distress like Merry does here and I think Sam would forget all about his fears if he saw Frodo in trouble like this. :)

French Pony · 13 April 2005 · Chapter 3: PART THREE: On the Great River

Oh, I like this chapter much better. There was a nice mix between what Merry was thinking about and what he was doing. I liked the interaction between him and Pippin and Boromir. It must have been rather dull just canoeing down the Anduin, especially with Boromir getting grimmer and grimmer. They must have found something to chat about. And how very hobbit-like that they chatted about geneology and family pleasures and pastimes.

Author's reply

Thanks! Yes I think it must have been dull too, and it`s a challenge to find something realistic they could have done. :)

shirebound · 13 April 2005 · Chapter 3: PART THREE: On the Great River

It's very cousin-y of Merry to not frighten Pip about why they need to conserve provisions. Your hobbits are so sweet with one another.

Author's reply

Thank you! Merry always does his best to not frighten or upset Pip, and running low on food is a scary thing for hobbits. :)

French Pony · 10 April 2005 · Chapter 2: PART TWO: Farewwell to Lòrien

It's nice to get Merry's perspective on events, but this chapter seemed strangely passive and detached. Almost as if Merry was just observing while interesting events were going on just around the corner. But I suppose that leaving Lothlorien must be kind of like that, like coming out of a dream.

Author's reply

I see what you mean. Tolkien writes Frodo`s thoughts and what Gimli and Legolas are talking about, but I think that Merry would not hear what they are saying and he could of course not read Frodo`s thoughts. I picture leaving Lothlòrien as coming out of a dream, and I`m glad that came through. More action is coming though. :)

shirebound · 10 April 2005 · Chapter 2: PART TWO: Farewwell to Lòrien

It's wonderful to hear Gimli referred to as "a fine and sensitive person". And I really like this a lot: "This was all too grand for him to put into words, and when Frodo and even Merry failed to describe the beauty of it adequately, then Pippin had decided he`d not even start to try and would simply try to remember the beauty as best he could with his heart and mind." Your lovely story reminds me of one I wrote three years ago called "Whispers of the Dragon" (which was largely AU). I need to get around to posting it on this site someday! The Fellowship spent so many days on the River, and it's fun to imagine what they might have talked and thought about. Looking forward to more! :D

Author's reply

Thank you! I think Gimli has his sensitive spots and the hobbits bring out the emotions in the rest of the Fellowship so I`m guessing he is getting in touch with his more and more as they travel. I`d love to read your story on it. I can`t say I`ve read it before! More to come soon!

French Pony · 8 April 2005 · Chapter 1: PART ONE: Summoned

Very nice. I like your use of Merry's point of view. He really does seem like the thoughtful, intelligent young hobbit that Tolkien made him out to be. He's got a good perspective on his surroundings and his situation, and he's beginning to understand something of his position with respect to the rest of the world. I can well believe that this is the Merry who will be so changed and matured by the time the story ends.

Author's reply

*blushes* Thank you for such nice words!

shirebound · 7 April 2005 · Chapter 1: PART ONE: Summoned

You describe Lorien so beautifully! And of course I adore this particular detail: "Elves came with food three times a day, and after the first days understood that hobbits needed to eat more often than that, so they provided bowls of fruit and small tarts and cakes in between." I enjoy "seeing" all this through Merry's eyes and thoughts. He always struck me as very practical and thoughtful, and given less attention and respect than he should have. I'm glad you posted this here, and am looking forward to future chapters.

Author's reply

Thank you! :)
