These were all lovely - and I do not think you lost the 'feel' of the Denethor that I have grown to love!

daw the minstrel · 14 May 2005 · Chapter 6: Leaving

You did wonderfully! I'm shocked that you're so young. Your use of language is beautiful, suggesting a great deal with very few words. And your sense of people's feeling is delicate and well-formed.

Thank you!

It's hard for me to believe in long term unrequited love, I guess. I think we tend to love people who love us in return, maybe even because they love us. And in the case of Finduilas, who's to say when fondness verges into love? Love in any marriage changes over time.

Author's reply

I believe you're right. Seeing as I'm only fourteen and having never experienced any real romance, much less marriage, I can't be very qualified to write real love. Still, I gave it a shot, mainly as an experiment to see whether a hormone-driven adolescent such as myself can write a decent romance that doesn't reek of lust and hormones. Would you mind telling me how I did? Thanks! Namarie! Loremaster

Denethor is one of those puzzling characters who has several sides to his personality, and it's possible to go wrong so easily by choosing only one of them. I think you balance him pretty well (for a guy who is eventually unbalanced -- but because he went to extremes out of devotion to this country, so go figure)

Author's reply

Thank you. I've always seen Denethor having extreme emotions so I imagined him loving Finduilas with everything he has. After all, Tolkien did say he loved Finduilas more than any other except for Boromir, and you know how extreme his love for Boromir was in the end. Thanks! Namarie! Loremaster

OOC? Does that mean out of character? One of the many wonderful things Tolkien brought to fanfic writers is his lack of character development. And so we each flesh them out as we ourselves see them. I don't think this is entirely off, because I don't think you've necessarily contradicted anything. You haven't provided many of his typically 'stern' moments, yet we've all seen that before anyway & isn't this series about his love for Finduilas? Granted, he does seem a bit soft here(other than the words to Faramir), but I don't think it's impossible that he was loving in his rare private life, especially before Faramir was born. Not overly loving, mind you - while we don't know he couldn't have received a Father of the Year award, we do know him well enough to remember he'd never have others see those personal moments. I also find it very hard to believe that he was ever abusive to Faramir, or really neglectful, not sure where you're going with that topic. His harsh exchange with Faramir during the siege of Minas Tirith has been blown way out of proportion in so many different ways that many fans have no idea who Denethor really is. My favorite Denethor writers are those that blend his moments of caring for his family & his people, with his keen knowledge and expertise of running a country; those who remember that even with his vast intelligence and diplomacy, he is just a man & he is not an uncontrollable lunatic. He's the most intriguing character in the book & is certainly far from one-dimensional. Sorry for the soapbox here. Carry on!

Thanks for the reviews, mirthor. Yes, I'm starting to hate Finduilas A (the Finduilas from Unrequited, Hope, Wisdom, Shame, and Lessons) for being so mean to poor, poor Denethor. I actually only respected not liked Denethor until I started writing this and now applaud Tolkien for creating such a fascinating character. Thanks for your opinion on whether Denethor is out-of-character. I was starting to wonder if he was a little too soft and mushy for the powerful, wise leader to be found in LotR (that is, before he went crazy). I tried to make references to his public appearance in the drabbles so everyone (and I) wouldn't forget he's still grim, strong old Denethor, but hey, he must have had a different personality for private life, too. At least, I do, but whether anyone else does is beyond me. I don't believe he was abusive, either, but as for what kind of father he was is a bit of a mystery. The only thing Tolkien really says is that's he's grim and favored Boromir over Faramir, but I don't really believe he beat up Faramir and locked him in a rat-infested broom closet every night like some *cough* allude to. Thank you! Namarie! Loremaster P. S. No fuss, I write long replies as well!

mirthor · 10 May 2005 · Chapter 4: Elder

Ahhh, poor Denethor. Though Boromir's presence probably made up for the lack of Fin's love, until she died.

mirthor · 10 May 2005 · Chapter 3: Marriage

Adrahil picked the wrong time to worry! But, isn't that always the way - afterthoughts. I don't think he would have allowed the union if he wasn't sure of Denethor's love, at least.

mirthor · 10 May 2005 · Chapter 1: First Impressions

I don't know if I've ever read a story that included one of Denethor's sisters.

Might I suggest Hands of a King by Anglachel on Henneth-Annun story archive? It's marvellous! And the characterizations are very interesting, especially that of Denethor, Finduilas, his sisters, and Ecthelion. Namarie! Loremaster

mirthor · 10 May 2005 · Chapter 2: Betrothal

A nice take on Ecthelion. Many people write him as a tyrant over his son, as some of what Tolkien has written could possibly suggest such - though it does not have to be so. This was a nice change.

daw the minstrel · 8 May 2005 · Chapter 4: Elder

I'm still finding this series of little glimpses to be very intriguing. I particularly liked the image of baby Boromir listening to the clang of swords.

Author's reply

Thanks, daw! Since I found out I have difficulty writing real chapter stories, I discovered writing bunches of little drabbles can work nearly as well. Happy Mother's Day! Happy V-E Day, too! Namarie! Loremaster

daw the minstrel · 7 May 2005 · Chapter 3: Marriage

I liked this set too. If Imrahil gave his daughter in a political marriage and she was lucky enough to be loved, then the Valar have smiled on him. I know it was common for rulers to do that but it must have been hard nonetheless. I guess they had different expectations of marriage than we do.

Author's reply

True, true. I'm still trying to figure out if Gondor did arranged marriages or not, but it's fun to twist D/F romances to the hilt. I rather like Peace myself out of the three Marriage drabbles. It's interesting to write their marriage day in three different ways, and it's funny that all of these D/F drabbles grew out of the Unrequited drabble in Chapter 1. You see, I was hit by a plotbunny when reading the quote in the first chapter. I was thinking, hm, it says Denethor loved Finduilas, but did Finduilas love Denethor? Than I wrote one with their love mutual, and their marriage of choice. Then, I wrote one with a political marriage, and hence, the three storylines with one of each in each chapter began. (Jeez, I write long replies, don't I? Namarie! Loremaster

Silvae · 7 May 2005 · Chapter 3: Marriage

I loved this chapter - it was my favourite. I really like Finduilas' multiple personalities. And your "Young!Denethor" is really realistic. Please, more, more! Good luck, Silvae

Author's reply

Thanks muchly! It was fun to creat three different storylines with three different Finduilases in the same story. Thanks for complimenting my Denethor. Even though there are three different variations of the D/F relationship in the fic, Denethor is the only one that really has the same personality throughout. Meanwhile we have: Finduilas A - Likes but doesn't love Denethor Finduilas B - Subject of political union Finduilas C - A woman truly in love with Denethor Thanks! Namarie! Loremaster

daw the minstrel · 6 May 2005 · Chapter 2: Betrothal

This was nicely done. You conveyed a lot with the very few words allowed you. Poor Denethor.

Author's reply

Thank you, Daw! I love your fics (Hurrah for in-character Legolas!), and it's lovely to get praise from writers such as you. Poor Denethor indeed. In case you're a little confused, (not that I'm insulting your intelligence) there are actually three storylines going on in my drabbles. One has Denethor loving Finduilas, but she doesn't love him back. Another is a political marriage. The last is that the love is mutual between the two. Namarie! Loremaster
