I am sitting here cackling like a loon at this MOST excellent story! It's a good thing no one's home or, by Durin's ax, they'd have me committed! What a hoot! Legolas is building up his 'good luck', I suppose! And Gimli with his beard envy! *snickers* This was amazing, GA! I bow to your superior wit!:-)

I'm so glad you enjoyed it. It was a hoot to write, too! The things my muse says....

I hope Pippin manages to be there when he inveigles the two into meeting. Aragorn will be having a fair few of these confrontations - but I suspect they are all going to make entertaining viewing.

Then there's the whole question of whether Theoden recognized him....

Considering how I love writing recognition moments into my own stories in which various folk realize they've met the new King before, I LOVE this one. Yes, in for a very pleasant surprise, this barkeeper is. Wonderful!

That's a great scene. I'm sure there will be many old campaigners who are astonished -- and delighted -- to find out their new king's 'remarkable past'.

This is a bit of a preview of a sequel to "Theme and Variations," that some day my schedule will allow me to write.

I hadn't realised that I hadn't dropped in and left a note for this one GA. It is hilarious. Larner came up with a reason for Strider carrying a useless sword around - it was so that Frodo would recognise him from the history lessons that Bilbo had taught him. Didn't seem to work though did it! *g*

Thanks, harrowcat! This tale is up for an award at the Middle-earth Fanfiction Awards. Drop on by and leave a review there!
I hadn't heard Larner's reason. It's a good one. Could make a good story.....back, you bad plotbunny, back! Stop biting me!

A woman with clear sight of her own. I am sure the blade also gave her more confidence in times of trouble.
Author's reply
Tolkien never says much about the powers of these daggers, but they must be pretty strong if one could kill the Witch-King!

· Chapter 4: The King's Dagger
Odd to find a new one put into the middle like that. i quess it is for your own plan to organise them. A lovely piece. i can just see the young lady going about her business. Her family must have served the last king, a long time ago. If people can continue to believe in the powers of good and light, the dark will not prevail for long. A nice little moment.
Author's reply
There's a note of explanation of the arrangement of the pieces at the very beginning. The first set of drabbles and vignettes focus on Aragorn and are arranged in order as they would occur in his lifetime. So this piece is set when he is between 20 and 26 years old; the other Ranger is Halbarad.
I wrote this after pondering long about what knowledge the remaining people of Eriador would have about the "Old Kings" (that's Frodo's phrase). And the muse presented this tale.
Thanks for reviewing.

· Chapter 4: The King's Dagger
A very nice one, although I was surprised to find it in the midst of the stories instead of the end of the list.
I'd like perhaps a better surety as to which Rangers these might be.
Author's reply
Thanks for reviewing, Larner! They are Aragorn and Halbarad, but the farm maid couldn't possibly know that, could she? And the story is from her point of view. My hope was that the mystery would add to the bit of suspense in the tale.

But the hair on Rosie's toes is a sign of great beauty to hobbits! She would look ... weird ... with bald feet!
I love the influence Bilbo has had on the children of the Shire. I doubt there were many lads and lasses playing Beren and Luthien before he started his tale-telling.
Author's reply
Yes, and they are trying really hard to please him.
Regarding the hairy feet, maybe slippers would help? I think the old Hobbit is trying to tell them in the most polite way that there is a basic problem with their project....

How wonderful to see more of Beorn! And his wife sounds *just* the sort of wife an unusual fellow like Beorn would need.
Isn't it funny how stories about some characters seem to blossom among different writers at the same time?

Yes, the wife is quite a gal. Thanks for tipping me off to your Beorn story. I'll be sure and check it out.

I imagine Aragorn might have gotten a bit tired of having his height the subject of jokes and comments. He would have had to develop a sense of humor about it, just to get by!
