Loved Celeborn's version of the father of the bride / son-in-law ritual. And the arrival of Cirdan to save the day and stand with the groom. Though Elrond should make a note that his parents-in-law seem to have a very thorough understanding of him - and that perhaps he should be rather wary of their insight! It will do Elrond a power of good to build his own happy family. And he gets about 2500 years to bolster him against the strains to come. Good tale!

Sorry to be late in reviewing (again--I think I'm just going to program a macro key on my computer so I can hit the key and it types that whole sentence for me). I chuckled at Elrond's 'discoveries' of the loss of his library, the Hall of Fire etc. When I got married, I lost little pieces of my house each night as the wedding got closer. Decorations covered my dining room table. Family members took over my spare bedrooms and living room. My mother-in-law took over my kitchen... So I felt for the poor guy. And I cracked up over Celeborn's conversation with Elrond--so casual. Hehehe. That was great! Valandil's arrival was exciting and a neat touch. And I loved the wedding and Cirdan's role in it. That was very appropriate and I liked it a lot. I loved the gifts, especially Cirdan's unfinished pearls. Great story FP--very funny and a lot of really poignant moments in it too.

Good, I was hoping for Cirdan. He is who I would have chosen also (and did! but that is for much later). All of these wedding preparations made me feel likely to elope, which at my age I should anyway, should I ever marry. Celeborn's 'talk' was quite good and every bridegroom should gulp a little before his future father in law.

This was a great story! Boy do I ever empathize with Elrond. I always figure that after the absolute insanity of my wedding (including my reception being crashed by Elvis impersonators)the actually marriage HAD to be easier. (22 years & counting). All your characters are nicely done. It's great to see them all in another light, especially Thranduil & Celeborn (what father doesn't have a little heart to heart with his future son in law). Looking forward to your next story. Post soon, Eliza

I had to laugh at Celeborn's "tradition", it was an amusing scene, "I shall cut your throat, pass me the chicken, you'll regret it if you ever hurt her, try this wine..." so politely threatening! It was the perfect gentleman's behaviour. And all is well that ends well, and ELrond finally went through this ordeal! It gave me the shivers! At fifteen, I had attended enough family weddings for two or three lives! so when I fell in, it was an almost too private affair... but my sister-in-law, who earns her living staging events for other people, almost crashed down when it came to her own wedding, while my brother, as it becomes any groom, simply called in in the last minute to see if his help was needed, and to allow my mother to check that the formal suit he was supposed to be wearing fitted him..( this, the day before the wedding!) Nice story, FP, and thanks for the musical tip.. I was wondering if it came from Purcell....

So many wonderful details that I felt like I was present throughout this event, including everything that led up to it. The "hurt my daughter and you're so dead" ritual speech by Celeborn was highly amusing, as was Elrond's surprise. Elrond's education must be sadly neglected if he was unaware of the ritual of such threats from all future father-in-laws. He's lucky that Celebrian has no brothers or else he'd be getting an earful from them as well. I quite like your portrayal of Thranduil, a rare glimpse of what he was like in his younger days before he got bogged with kingly duties. I guess Galadriel and Celeborn know Elrond well after all, much more than Elrond gives them credit for. A nice, completed picture with Cirdan standing in for Elrond's father. Thank you for this wedding tale. Now if only the family wedding that I am attending this weekend can proceed as smoothly as this one and not end with certain relatives leaving on unspeaking terms with one another.

I was amused by this image of an elaborate wedding. I don't enjoy that sort of thing and so didn't do it. No one seemed too surprised. We got married in the student chapel in Ann Arbor with our immediate family and about 30 friends. But of course, when you figure out who Elrond was connected to over the centuries, he had a whole different set of problems. But in the end, it was love that made the difference. He was surrounded by people who loved him, as he deserved to be.

I'm behind on reviewing, but I wanted to tell you how much I'm enjoying this story. Delightful, just delightful. This wedding should be quite an interesting show! I'm looking forward to reading more. Karen

elliska · 28 July 2005 · Chapter 2: Kindred And Friends

Sorry, I read this yesterday at work and then didn't get to review it. ROTFL! Thranduil killed me in this chapter. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's start at the beginning... What a wonderful gift Thranduil brought. I really liked that idea. And the dialogue between Elrond, Celeborn and Thranduil was great. :-) I also like Elrond and Thranduil's discussion as they planted the trees--the dancing about to the topic of who will stand with Elrond was well done, both sad in the theme and comical in the way it was managed. Ha! Then my diplomatic skills are improving!" Thranduil cried. "One day, Lord Elrond, I will perfect the art of speaking in circles, never coming out and saying what must be said." "And when you do, Beren and Lúthien Tinúviel will return to this world to celebrate." *Snort* But for the first time ever to the best of my recollection, I did literally spit my drink at my monitor when I got to Thranduil's bawdy songs. You are and evil author! That was hilarious. And Galadriel's interruption was priceless! Oh, it had to be her. That was twisted! I loved it! Great chapter.

perelleth · 27 July 2005 · Chapter 2: Kindred And Friends

IT is so funny to see these people relaxed and "almost" enjoying being around one another for a change! Thranduil's gift was a very well-thought one! And poor Elrond's troubles are only worsening as the day approaches. I bet Galadriel is enjoying her mother-in-law role! Mmmm, I believe I'm seeing everything blue around, too, poor one. Thranduil speaking in circles! That would be a feat indeed! I really like your sense of humour, FP :-)

Jule · 27 July 2005 · Chapter 2: Kindred And Friends

Thranduil rules. He is the best and my absolute favorite. Legolas is definitely his Ada’s boy. King Thranduil is exactly who Elrond needed in the midst of all this stifling formality bring sad memories. Yes getting married is happy, a wedding not always so much. It should be but I swear I have seen people almost drown in “perfect plans.” I am glad the mischievous young King of Mirkwood is there to throw Elrond a lifeline. My favorite was imagining Thranduil singing those types of songs. I am curious where Celeborn and Galadrial sent Thranduil. Please write more soon. Thanks Jule

Manderly · 26 July 2005 · Chapter 2: Kindred And Friends

It's nice to see that even elves (Elrond, no less) face the same nerve storms as mere mortals before the big date. Interesting that he chooses to ask Thranduil's advice in such delicate matters. Thranduil's advice (so far as the wedding night is concerned) probably wasn't too helpful, but it certainly was entertaining. Is this a glimpse of the bachelor party to come? The beech trees - what a wonderful and thoughtful wedding gift! Well, it seems like everything is going to be blue for this wedding. I hope the sky will be blue that day too.

Pernauriel · 26 July 2005 · Chapter 2: Kindred And Friends

I enjoyed reading it was very amusing. When you mentioned Thanduril my first thought was that he would be a good stand in.

TithemFeredir · 26 July 2005 · Chapter 2: Kindred And Friends

I loved your wounded, generous, boisterous, complex Thranduil. And poor Elrond, it looks like he won't get a break anytime soon. This is a very amusing story. Looking forward to the next chapter! ~TF

daw the minstrel · 26 July 2005 · Chapter 2: Kindred And Friends

Oh my lord. Of course it would be Galadriel who comes along while Thranduil is singing bawdy songs to her future son-in-law. And Celeborn too! LOL The gift of the trees is wonderful. I liked the allusions to how all these people looked at the Last Alliance and the sense that they're picking up the pieces of their lives again and going on in stubborn efforts to be happy.

perelleth · 21 July 2005 · Chapter 1: Of Troubles And Trials

Sorry it took me long to review, but I've been away since last Sunday and I'm far behind in my reading in my reviewing..:-) I really like your warped sense of humour FP, and daring to portray Elrond, pardon me, Celebrían's wedding is a definite proof that you do have it. I was laughing from the very first line! Also, I liked the apparently tiniy bit of problem Elrond is facing. It must have been truly difficult for him in that situation. I liked uderstanding and emphatic Galadriel and now I'm wondering who's going to fill in the vacant. Ready to have more fun!

elliska · 21 July 2005 · Chapter 1: Of Troubles And Trials

Ooo. I come back from training to a whole new story! Cool. And this one looks to be hilarious. You are too right the weddings are better than circuses (sp?). I thought the conversation with Erestor and Glorfindel (pink wedding cloak and all) was absolutely a riot! I rolled all the way through it. And the conversation with Celebrian was very well done--quite sad but something that had to be on his mind. I am definitely looking forward to this one. I love a good wedding. ;-)

Nilmandra · 20 July 2005 · Chapter 1: Of Troubles And Trials

My mother had a sewing business making weddding dresses and I met enough brides and bridesmaids and mothers of the bride to determine that I would elope. All the build up and decisions and so on was very funny. Elrond's problem, however, is very real and look forward to seeing what Galadriel proposes as a solution.

Bodkin · 20 July 2005 · Chapter 1: Of Troubles And Trials

Poor Elrond. He can face down a Dark Lord or two, but confront him with a damsel discussing wedding finery and he's in pieces. Not, of course, that Galadriel is just any damsel. Still he can console himself with the presence of Celebrian in his arms, which is probably compensation enough. Interesting the pink/blue thing. Somewhere I have a book that says that until the twentieth century pink was considered a much more macho strong colour more suited to boys, while blue was thought of as rather wishy-washy and more suitable for girls. How things change! I think Elrond and the male brigade might discover that there is another time when females take over the asylum. I believe the last few weeks before the arrival of a child can lead the men to go and hide in the stables, too. Most enjoyable. I wonder who will stand with Elrond - I'm looking forward to finding out.

Manderly · 19 July 2005 · Chapter 1: Of Troubles And Trials

The timing of the arrival of this story cannot be more perfect. I have a family wedding coming up in three weeks (my husband's nephew) and can more than sympathize with what Elrond is going through. It seems like there is always someone (or someones) ready to hijack the entire event from the bride and groom. Poor Elrond. At least he should take comfort in the fact that Galadriel's choice of colour is blue, and not pink. A very entertaining chapter. It will be interesting to see if I will be seeing the same things in your future chapters as what I am seeing now with this family wedding.

TithenFeredir · 19 July 2005 · Chapter 1: Of Troubles And Trials

I laughed through the beginning of this chapter where Elrond, Glorfindel and Erestor discussed the plight of elvish grooms. Erestor in pink? Oh my. Mirdan's muted sadness was touching, as were Elrond's feelings of abandonment. The way you wrote Celebrian she seemed just the sort of warmth he needed, but then as Jay pointed out, it gave a twinge to read her declare that when they were married he would never be alone again. Very nice. ~TF

daw the minstrel · 19 July 2005 · Chapter 1: Of Troubles And Trials

As someone whose son recently announced he is getting married in March, I read this with interest. Thank goodness my main responsibility appears to be to show up, wear what I'm told, and keep my mouth shut. I can do that! But I sympathize with Elrond. The marriage customes of LACE assume a much more stable world than the one he inhabits. You can see that even in the smith who made the rings. Luckily for Elrond, he and Celebrian love one another and that will outweigh everything you have planned for them. I think!

harrowcat · 19 July 2005 · Chapter 1: Of Troubles And Trials

I wasn't sure that I was going to like this as I tend to prefer fellowship stories but I am always intrigued by Elrond & you have me hooked! My heart goes out to Elrond - to stand alone without close family is lonely at best and knowing what happens to Celebrian as we do is so sad. More soon please!

Jay of Lasgalen · 19 July 2005 · Chapter 1: Of Troubles And Trials

My, this brings back memories. The planning. The details. The careful courtesies so as not to upset anyone. I remember it all well. And as of next Tuesday, I will have been married for exactly 25 years. I feel for Elrond here. It's not just the petty details, it's the important things like who should stand by him - he's lost so many who are close, he's bound to think of them all. Elros, Gil-Galad, Maglor - all would have been good substitutes for Earendil. Particularly sad is Celebrían's observation that they will soon be married, and then Elrond will not be alone again. That's yet another loss he'll have to face :( Good story so far. Jay
