· Chapter 82: Hearts Healed
Lovely to see Frodo dancing, joyful, and healed!
And Sam...
And seein’ him, alive and in joy--that’s healed me!
Yes, I can see how that would be part of Sam's healing. And so very practical, down-to-earth, and hobbity, even in his elevated surroundings.
"I may not be the dancer as he is,” he said over his shoulder, “but I’m not gone yet! I may show even him a thing or two!”
Left me grinning.
Author's reply
Joy to you this morning. And Christ is risen!

Whoa! Do not get between Frodo and the mushrooms that are his. I can relate to that. My chocolate is mine, and nobody better even think of eating it. I have been known to share with hamdsome rangers!
Author's reply
Oh, I'm with you regarding chocolate, Grumpy! I regularly give up chocolate for Lent, and am counting down the hours until Easter comes at the moment! Heh!
And if a certain scruffy Ranger came my way, I think I, too, would be generous. However, Frodo isn't as amenable to masculine charms as I am....

Really, I felt sorry for Aragorn. The poor guy couldn’t know that the rest in the pot was meant for Frodo, after all. And he got a pretty good impression how Frodo earned the name ‚rascal of Buckland’! Frodo really took his revenge for missing a few mushrooms *grin*
Author's reply
Oh, I suspect that, being Frodo, he did indeed earn that title. Now Aragorn KNOWS what this Hobbit is capable of!
Glad you enjoyed it!

My sympathies are entirely with Strider. After all the poor man really had no idea of his crime. I love tales of the journey from Bree to Weathertop when the hobbits are getting to know the ranger and this was a rare treat.
Author's reply
This is the third story I've written of that time (not counting my one AU tale). It's fun to write something light and fun, and that shows Frodo at his most determined and devious. Strider didn't realize for whom the mushrooms were being saved, but I think he did know there was a reason they remained in the pan. But who could resist Sam's mushrooms, eh? Heh!
Thank you so much, Inzilbeth!

Muahahahaha! I'm still glad to see Frodo has his mischievous streak even at this age and with this many worries weighing down on him.
Never come between a hobbit and his mushrooms...
Author's reply
Oh, yes, I like to think that even out here in the wilds he can think of ways to get back at whoever manages to really tick him off! Thank you for the feedback--am glad I gave you some chuckles!

Ah yes! Never come between a Hobbit his dinner, especially if it contains mushrooms!
Rather petty of Frodo if you ask me, Strider wasn't to know the mushrooms were being saved for him!
He is one sneaky Hobbit though!
More please,
Lynda
Author's reply
Well, although Frodo doesn't know it as yet, Strider does know Bilbo well, and ought to know just what mushrooms mean to a Hobbit; and he knows those mushrooms were NOT put on his plate. Petty, yes, but as you noted very devious! Heh! Glad you enjoyed it!

Ah, the Terror of Buckland strikes again! LOL! I love the way everything he did was so subtle--one or two could have been an accident. Two or three a coincidence--but all of them?
*giggle*
Poor Strider!
Author's reply
It was such fun thinking of all the ways Frodo might have found to let his annoyance be known. And this is one offense I think he would retaliate about! Heh!
Thanks so!

Oh, poor, poor Pippin! Oh dear, how embarrassing for him, poor lad!
I love seeing Frodo and Aragorn in action, as it were, though, and the way Pip's fellow revelers stood up with him, bless them. The end was really touching...but I'm betting such an incident will never happen again!
Author's reply
Golden was the one who set the conditions she wished to see built into this story, and it was most intriguing bringing them all together! Heh!
Embarrassing for our young Took, but instructive for all. Those Guardsmen who know him respect Pippin the more, and the others no longer can dismiss him merely as an executive whim, if you will. And Frodo has had a necessary correction to thinking he can or even should try to protect Peregrin Took.
Am glad you finally got to read it.

Ah, I like Griffo; he seems a good soul. It's always interesting to see bits of those last two years from new perspectives. I especially love the conversation Sam and Griffo had at the beginning.
Author's reply
I've written Griffo as a bit less aware of the friendship that's grown between Frodo and his gardener than I usually do, but then this was originally written to be submitted to an anonymous competition so I was purposely writing it so as not to be readily recognizable. But the joy Sam must have felt at the moment just poured out of him, I found!

Such a cozy story, though!

Yes, poor Frodo--but it turns out better than he'd looked for it to, I think.

*shakes head to clear it* Dear dear, I feel like I've been spying. *grins*
Alas for the Ring's presence, and for Pearl's fear, and for Frodo.
Author's reply
This was fun to write--in those innocent days when I'm certain Frodo thought the pleasure and joy of the moment would last forever. At least he had the chance to know some such joys and pleasures, even if they didn't stay with him for the rest of his life!
Aw, I love this one. Love Sam's way of getting Frodo to talk whether he really wants to or not, love the whole depiction of this not-so-ordinary-after-all part of the trekk. And the end is chilling.
Author's reply
The challenge was to face this particular portion of the quest, indeep providing a gapfiller. It had been thought by Dreamflower perhaps I'd look at the Hobbits getting lost in the Emyn Muil; but I found that the trip about the foot of Amon Lhaw was far more provocative. As for Gollum's part in it--he, too, has his part to play....
Thanks so.

Awww!
This is so perfect! I thought to catch up on fanfic while I put off a conversation with my dad about not having been accepted into one of the colleges I applied to...yeah, I know, I'm horrible, but I really don't want to tell him. I didn't know I'd find something so conducive to cheerfulness. :)
I just love seeing Bilbo's POV on all this! He was surely meant for Frodo as much as Frodo was meant for him. So heart-warming, I love it!
Author's reply
Procrastination about an unpleasant topic, eh? I certainly relate to that!
I was lucky--only applied to one college and got accepted right away.
Am glad this was found a pleasant diversion, and that it made you smile. Yes, the two Hobbits who were truly intended to be there for one another. Thanks you so for all the comments!

But then according to her I’m so cracked I can’t find my way out of the hole without a map in hand and two at my elbow to guide me *lol* How very Lobelia! That has to be the exaggeration of the year ;)
Nice little interlude with Folco. That copying books is something I remember well - I think Sam said he was the best copyist in the Shire, at least after Frodo left.
I'm sorry for Saradoc and Esmeralda for losing their foster son, but so glad for Frodo and Bilbo. It really was the best the old hobbit could do for his young cousin to take him under his wing in Bag End.
The farewell from Brandy Hall was moving - and very typical of Frodo.
The rest is just lovely. To watch Frodo brightening more and more, to see him enjoy himself is great. And I love Sam's reaction at seeing Frodo :) It truly was the beginning of a great friendship, wasn't it?
Author's reply
Yes, how very much Lobelia indeed!
Saradoc and Esmeralda may be losing the presence of the son of their heart, but in the end I suspect he loves them the more for seeing to it his true needs were being met at the moment. And we know that Frodo and Merry remained friends and almost brothers always.
Am so glad you found it moving and lovely--that makes me very glad! Thank you so!

Of course I did not mean to imply that Sam being 'in love' with Frodo was romantic since we both share the professor's view and the hobbits' own view of this tremendous love. I love your response about the growth of their love.
Namarie, God bless, Antane :)
Author's reply
I know you don't mean that, but some folk who don't understand our appreciation of the love between Frodo and Sam have rather risque imaginations.
Yes, it grew over time, the love of these two brothers of the heart!

· Chapter 79: The Transition
Sorry it's taken so long to get to this. :( But it's certainly well done. This was such an important step in Frodo's life and not without its heartache. You can see already that he hates goodbyes, maybe because he was robbed of saying goodbye to his parents? I can see another part of myself in him when he admits to feeling ugly inside at times when he's angry at people. I'm working on that, more annoyed and irritated than angry. This is a big moment in Bilbo's life too and I love the way that was handled too. And certainly a big moment in Sam's life too! :) He's already in love and Frodo will soon be too. Indeed the two were made for each other, but also for so many others. Cute first meeting there. I would absolutely love if they could somehow put that meeting in the second Hobbit film.
Namarie, God bless, Antane :)
Author's reply
I think most decent folk feel ugly within ourselves at times--certainly I've found it in myself often enough.
The last time Frodo bade goodbye to someone he loved, he lost them completely. Perhaps it's a terrible superstition he's developed, but if he can help doing so he'll avoid saying goodbye in the future.
Sam is definitely fascinated by his first glimpse of the Master's new ward, but the love that will develop between him and Frodo will come to its own over time. Not an erotic love--definitely the love proper to friends and brothers of the heart, or so I see it. This love will help to sustain both when it appears all other comfort is lost to them, and it will be the last true love, perhaps, Frodo will know within Middle Earth. But it will serve to the needs of all in the end, preparing Sam to take over his friend's role as protector and nurturer of the Shire.
