· Chapter 29: Maelstrom
First, my warmest (if belated) birthday wishes to you - and a blessed, joyful New Year, too! Your gift has been the brightest spot after weeks of struggling against inanities - and what a ride you have led us! Such anguish and grief after that lovely scene with the little girl. That was brilliant how Legolas turned that formidable dragon of a mother into a model of docility and courtesy. I swear he can charm the tail off any rodent, too :-D! Oh, and I just loved the 'foggy' phrase in its context - thank you for wrapping it up so nicely :-) It's great to see Hamille back in the story, I'd love to get a glimpse of Fierthwain now, he must be a sorry sight. But it's Hamille I feel sorry for - he could not have stopped Legolas, and now he must fear for him. Poor elf - don't leave him (and us) too long in suspense!
Hugs,
your rodent
Author's reply
My dear rodent,
Has your week been a bummer too? :-(
I'm glad this chapter lit up the end of it then. :-) Legolas could light anything up: maidens, rodents, Christmas trees, reindeer...
You're welcome to the use of the 'foggy' expression - I loved it so much I couldn't let go of it. :-) And methinks your name will come up one more time before the story is over. ;-)
In the meantime, though... yes, I guess we should all worry along with Hamille. But that won't stop you from enjoying your Christmas and New Year will it? Where will it be? Oh I miss my white Christmases, sigh... so if you're having one, please think of me. :-)
Thank you for your visit. Hope you won't go into hibernation just yet!
Hugs

What a suspensful climax to this chapter. Bravo!

Thank you, Noor. I will try to write the nexy chapter as soon as I can, but it may not be ready till January. Have a great New Year in the meantime. :-)

Hang on Estel, help is on the way. I hope that Legolas brought some more stuff besides the light. Something to catch Estel interest, like a picture of Arwin, some honeycakes, a little wine. A road map to find his way back out.
Author's reply
Oh my goodness, grumpy - this response to your review is terribly late! My apologies - blame it on the time factor, then the difficulty in accessing international sites because of the damaged cables, and then on forgetfulness!
Anyway, I wanted to tell you that your review amused me as usual. :-D But no, I'm afriad Legolas is not bringing along any picture of Arwen, honeycakes, or wine as you suggested. Nor does he have a road map to help him return. Nope, all he has is the Light in his hand and in his loving heart. Will that be enough?
Guess we;ll find out in the last couple of chapters. See you then, grumpy, and thanks for your holiday visit! Happy New Year!

First, Happy belated birthday. Tonight in honor of your b-day, a special showing of Return of the Kings, with loads of butter popcorn.
This was a great chapter for the holidays, reminding us of what is truly important, those we love surrounding us even in difficult times.
Seeing a light, hearted Legolas with children was great too. After this is over we are going to have to get Hamille bonded quickly. Legolas needs some eflings to play uncle to.
Tell Celeborn, Hope is what the holidays are all about
Now for my birthday (I'm a new year's day gal) can I ask Santa for a new chapter??
Author's reply
Mae govannen, Eliza!
Your reviews have sometimes come in just before I log out - tonight is no exception. :-) Guess what - your wishes are not belated, it's still the 17th here. So - thank you! And you must have read into the past - I just watched ROTK (again x the 100th time or so) two night ago.
--"After this is over we are going to have to get Hamille bonded quickly. Legolas needs some eflings to play uncle to." --
IF Aragorn and Legolas make it out, that may well happen. ;-) But for now - yes, loved ones around us - that's so important at any time, and we are reminded of that especially at this time of the year.
And if I don't manage to post a new chapter on your birthday, my dear - I hope it will be a blessed one for you. How lovely to have your birthday fall on a public holiday!
Love and hugs

First of all, Happy Birthday to you.I hope that you have a wonderful day.
Ahh, what grief to end with! Legolas' friends are understandably upset at what he has done, but they couldn't really have expected Legolas to do anything less than go to the Shadow Realm to find Aragorn. After all, Legolas wouldn't be the elf they loved so much if he didn't at least try and bring Aragorn back. They will now have to trust that Legolas'love for Aragorn will break the hold the Shadow has on the King of Gondor. It will be tough......but I'm really, really looking forward to the upcoming battle that Legolas will engage in.Go, Legolas!
You leave us, once again, breathless in anticipation and I'll be waiting for the next chapter in the New Year.Peace, good health and much joy to you and yours in 2007, Legolass!
Merry Christmas.
Ali.
Author's reply
Hi, Linda,
No, Legolas' friends knew he would make the attempt to save Aragorn, but they didn't expect he would actually go into the Realm itself. I'm glad Legolas is with him now, though.
You look forward to the battle, you say? Well, I have to write that 'battle' - and THAT will be tough, lol.
Thank you very much for your wishes and the review, Linda! May your life be good. See you next update.

Ah Happy birthday dear Legolass. What a present of a chapter. Thank you so much. Powerful stuff but I am glad that Legolas has gone to look for/be with Aragorn. Hard thing for Celeborn to do. Looking forward to the next installment but do have a wonderful Christmas.

Thank you for your wishes, harrowcat. :-) I'm glad Legolas is with Aragorn now, too - the poor man needs it, but I don't envy Celeborn for what he had to do.

Hi
Still reading your story and loving every word of it!
Enjoyed this chapter very much and the thought of explaining Legolas's condition to Thranduil is a conversation i would love to witness!
Looking forward to the next chapter.
Author's reply
Hi, Kitty,
Lovely to hear again from you!
Yes, it would be interesting to see how Celeborn explains Legolas' choice, and his own role in supporting it, to Thranduil, so I think I'll give that event a miss for now. :-) If Legolas and Aragorn make it out of the realm, the King will probably start on another long lecture on why Legolas should leave for Valinor (if you've read my other story "For the Love...").
By the way, I never asked you: are you the Kitty from fanfic.net - who wrote stories for a while, then stopped?
Well, whether you are or not, thank you for this visit - it's wonderful to hear from readers. See you next update!

Sorry for the delay in reviewing.
Thanks for another gripping chapter. I love the little girl.
YOu have me increasingly worried about Aragorn.
Wishing you a happy and peaceful Christmas season and joyful new year.
Author's reply
Hi, Linda - we should all have such delightful little children around us. But I'd be quite happy with a Ranger and elf, thank you. :-)
I hope to post the next chapter soon (before Christmas), at the end of which we may have more than Aragorn to worry about - not a pleasant thought, seeing that the story is close to its conclusion.
See you then, Linda, and thank you for reviewing this one.

Yeah for the hobbits, a little girl and Lord Celeborn. I did like his face off with Fierthwain. Now Gimli has his elf back, and Legolas is back with Aragorn. Aragorn needs is wake up from his nap, before he gets sleep lines all over his face. Christmas cookies for you and Estel, if Lord Celeborn can get him back from the dark.
Author's reply
Sleep lines on Aragorn's face?!! Lol - you think of the most ridiculously funny things when the man is literally on his (near)death bed! :-D Well, we'll have to see if Estel and I can get those cookies by Christmas. Maybe not if (1) I cannot update by then (2) Celeborn fails.
But thank you for the thought - and the review. :-)

And I am sorry that it has taken me a whole week to find the time to enjoy this chapter properly so I am fully in sympathy with you about the needs of RL. I am so glad that they have been rescued and that Legolas is reaching Aragorn even if in so limited a way.
Out of the mouth of a babe and a child....comes the truth and rescue!!!
Author's reply
You know, harrowcat, I actually toyed with the idea of naming the chapter "Out of the mouth of babes" - just as you expressed it :-) , but I settled for something that would cover two or three other events in the chapter as well.

Greeetings again Legolass,
I LOVE this chapter! I must say that you never cease to impress me! I apologize that it has taken quite a while from my last review.
It is really touching how Legolas immediately goes to Aragorn despite his ordeal. Also, really beautiful how he is close to Aragorn and Gimli, true friends to the core.
It was really intersting how they managed the truth from the captors. I wouldn't like to be in their places at the moment.
Can't wait for more!
Nayru
Author's reply
Hi Nayru,
Yes I've missed you, so welcome back, and I'm glad you like the chapter. :-)
I'm sure none of us want to be Fierthwain's place right now - to have to face Gimli AND Celeborn *shudder* -- I actually meant to ask readers for a wish list of what they would like to see happen to those goons - forgot to post the notice till today, duh! Would be interesting to hear ideas, lol!
Thank you for 'visiting' again and see you next update,

"There would be time enough later for Lord Celeborn and Gimli to visit their fury upon Fierthwain." Yes, oh yes - and let him stew a little, first (rubbing hands in satisfaction). The extent of his stupidity might begin to dawn on him now, although he does not even know how lucky he is that King Thranduil is not around, too. On the other hand, the heartfelt thanks of a real prince will be very welcome in a different quarter, I think. What a sweet, bright child she is. Her rebuke of Gimli was that hilarious :-D But Gimli also had his moments - and there is quite a sensitive soul hiding somewhere under his gruff beard. And there is a great glimmer of hope at the end. Although you somehow always just missed to tell us (quite unintentional, I'm inclined to believe ;-) ) what exactly might be done to release Aragorn from that spell. Anyway, it's well worth waiting for any length of time!
Hugs and thanks,
your rodent

How wonderful that you are feeling (and enjoying) all the different emotions I wished to evoke in this chapter! Thanks for letting me know you do.
"...although you somehow always just missed to tell us (quite unintentional, I'm inclined to believe ;-) ) what exactly might be done to release Aragorn from that spell..." --- oh yes, it's QUITE UNintentional, to be sure. :-D

Hi, Legolass.I particularly liked the chapter title, especially as it can be taken so many ways. The obvious one is the predicament Legolas & Elrohir find themselves in but, right at the end, you focused on the tie that really defines this story. The fierce love that Legolas & Aragorn have for each other could be seen as a weakness by some, but the bond between them will save both their souls in the end.
You may take as much time away as you need, Legolass, if return with a chapter this good! I really wanted the village baddies to have their comeuppance, but I also want Aragorn to be the one who deals out their punishment.I don't think Aragorn will be too happy when he finds out the torment both Legolas & Elrohir suffered while he lay in the shadow.
If you don't update before the end of the year then I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy 2007.Take care.
Ali.
Author's reply
Hello, Ali,
So glad you like the title - some titles come to mind easily, but I had to think a bit before I settled on this one, and you interpreted it EXACTLY right in both instances! :-) It makes me feel good to know a sensitive reader 'gets' it - thank you for telling me!

Mae Govannen Legolass,
Well done as usual. One thing I love about the hobbits, they follow their instincts. Tell Merry I'll have to make him some thing special. Very touching moment between Legolas and Aragorn at the end. I remember reading some where that many doctors believe that visitors should talk with comatose patients, that subconciously they can hear them. I think Aragorn is trying to find his way back to his friend.
If I don't chat with you before hand, have a joyous holiday season. My grandmother used to tell me when there is too much on my plate, it's time to push away from the table and take a breather. So my holiday wish for you is some down time for yourself in middle earth.
Peace and Joy

Author's reply
Mae govannen, mellon nin!
Legolas never read a medical guidebook, but he certainly knows his unconscious friend needs him - he would agree with those doctors who treat comatose patients. :-)
Have a great holiday/celebration yourself, my friend, and say hi to Mel for me. One day I must write a story about some kind of festival Aragorn and Legolas observe. :-)

Hello, I will now calmly write you another review as my first one got rejected by a certain other site which I give up on! I will let you guess which one.Anyway I was thinking that maybe we ought to take Fierthain and his buddies and leave tham for a nice campout in The Pathes of the Dead for a night or two or maybe three and see how they come out of that! Then I would like to hurt them badly but I think when Aragorn wakes up he will take care of them. Also Jacob my grandson says Hi or should I say Goo! Goo! He looks just like what a baby Estel would look like. I wish I could send you a picture! And dont worry Ill be waiting around for the finish of this story and so will everybody else, its to good to miss!
