This is just too hilarious! Poor Aragorn trying to defend his brothers. Arwen was great. And again, I love Gimli. You should do more stories with him. You really capture him well here, I think. These were great, Bodkin. :-)
Author's reply
Aragorn might have been a little more enthusiastic about the joke if he hadn't just been caught out. And could picture himself putting his foot in it with the dwarven diplomats. But Arwen managed to convince him . . . Or, at least, take his mind off the subject.
I'm so pleased you like Gimli. Maybe I will have to do more with him. Thank you.

Now this is the best one for multiple reasons. Gimli is perfect in this--in his reactions to Elladan and Elrohir initially, in his contemplations of elves and in his reaction to hearing the twins' curses. This really is a perfect example of what I love about your stories--part of them make me really think (Gimli's thoughts on elves) and part of them make me laugh myself silly. Utile et dulce. Love it!
Author's reply
It is now hard to believe this started so simply. I'm so pleased you like Gimli (an underwritten character, I think). And that his response to the flighty elves seems right.
I'm flattered that you think the stories work on more than one level. I know this one was a delight to write.

Your Galadriel and Celeborn are the best! Galadriel's body language in this was great. I loved it. And the ending:
I accept the warning,’ Celeborn told her. ‘But believe me when I say that I know you too well to be taken in. Attempt to deceive me, my love, and I will see that you pay for it.’
‘Promises,’ Galadriel said, taking his hand and leading him inside. ‘Promises.’
That is so perfect. I can just see those two strong willed elved having that conversation.
Author's reply
Thank you. I think this . . . incident brought them a glimmer of light in the midst of their sorrow. Just for a moment, Celebrian was with them - bright and joyous and full of mischief. With the promise of reunion held before them.
And they had each other - mutual support to bring them through yet another trial.

· Chapter 2: Poetic Justice
And I love Glorfindel and Elrond in this.
I cannot remember ever being quite so young and cocksure,’ Elrond observed.
Glorfindel laughed. ‘I am not sure that everyone who survived the First Age would agree with that. I have heard some stories of the sons of Eärendil . . .’ His eyes gleamed as he glanced at his friend. ‘I had thought of passing them on to your sons,’ he added innocently.
‘I have always regretted not being acquainted with those who knew you in your youth,’ Elrond winced. ‘Mutual blackmail would, I feel, be only fair.’
That is a hilarious interchange. These two are great together.
And this:
I have clearly failed in my attempts to educate them properly,’ Elrond mused. ‘Khuzdul was among the languages they were supposed to learn.’
‘It was hard enough to get them to study Quenya,’ Glorfindel remarked. ‘They were convinced that fluent Westron was more than enough for the modern elf.’
*Snort!* That exchange just cracked me up. Great dialogue here!
Author's reply
Glorfindel is just so - Glorfindel-ish. He is very good for Elrond, who always seems to be just a bit too devoted to duty. Glorfindel makes him play.
I don't think the twins were enthusiastic students. The kind who demand to be told the point of studying algebra or literature . . . because they'll never need it.

Thank you. This whole arc has grown completely out of control!
It's such a pleasure to have a healthy mischievous Celebrian enjoying the same traits in her sons. As to whether she is more like her adar or her naneth, I wouldn't like to say. (Both of them!)

Oh no, now you have done it, over a hundred years of subversive elf baiting just to find out their full vocabulary - hehehe. Your Gimli is so spot on I find myself retrospectively missing his voice in your other work. Bother mortality anyway - bah!

Author's reply
And, what is more, he has developed a cunning plan - he is going to see if he can add to that vocabulary. Just the odd muttered imprecation - uttered so that only elven hearing can pick it up . . . and Gimli keeping careful score. A dangerous game, but someone's got to play it.
I have written very little Gimli - so I am very pleased that you think he is in character. (Not least because your Gimli is such a great character.) Yes, it's a shame that the Fellowship end up divided by something as tedious as mortality.

LMAO! TeeheeHA, this is a gem! Had me laughing from chapter one, especially with the thought of such a wise, stately Elf as Galadriel being aware of the more, uh, vulgar aspects of communication *g* I think my favourite chapter was 'Brothers Beneath the Skill', especially Gimli's translation on these mysterious phrases. Mind you, I'm a bit suspicious now of all those Sindarin and Quenya phrases I've picked up over the net ^_^ Definitely a breath of fresh air to see the Peredhil twins being the clueless subjects of a self-inflicted joke. Thank you, I really enjoyed reading this!
Author's reply
Galadriel likes to put across the image of Miss Perfect Hair, but underneath it she is quite earthy. It's one of those things she hides - except from Celeborn. Not to mention one of the things he likes about her!
Brothers Beneath the Skin just jumped out at me and begged to be written - it was difficult to think of suitable phrases without becoming too vulgar myself. I'm sure some of the things they say are a little cruder. Dwarves, too, are quite earthy.
Someone's review mentioned teaching foreign exchange students to use really unsuitable language - I just hope that LOTR enthusiasts are more mature. No? Maybe not!
Poor twins. I think they will have to get their own back somehow. They really aren't simple-minded jokers. Most of the time.

Now all he had to do was get those flighty elves, without realising his intent, to reveal all their choicest expressions – and that would make a pleasant project for him over the many peaceful years to come. NOw, come, did he, did he, did he? When, how, why?
Oh my, thanks I'm all alone on the whole floor, I was able to snicker all the way! You know, this has actually finished up the twins in my eyes! Never again I'll be able to read about them without remembering this, I fear! That was superb! :-)
Author's reply
I've just copied a bit of what I said to Dot here
- However, Gimli (this one is NOT going to make it to paper) has a devious little scheme of his own to keep him entertained over the next century. Not only is he planning to collect the phrases used by the sons of Elrond, he has in mind the possibility of adding to them. Just a few casual phrases - accidentally employed in elven earshot. Elladan and Elrohir will collect them thirstily - like a plant in the rain at the end of a dry week. And Gimli will watch and listen and act dumb. And enjoy. Although he will have to act carefully so as not to pollute the mind of his elf.
I have no plans to add this at the moment. For one thing, it would turn snippets from various points of view into a Gimli story - so it would have to be a stand alone and I don't think I'm confident enough to centre a whole story on Gimli. And for another - the poor twins have suffered enough! For the moment.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Well, good for Arwen! No point in spoiling it now. Of course, she could just figure that it’ll save them more embarrassment by not telling them than telling but I prefer to think she’s enjoying a good joke ;-)
I actually didn’t expect Aragorn to react that way any more than Gimli did. Men! Wanting to save his brothers instead of embarrassing them???! LOL. Perhaps Gimli should just have explained it to Arwen and let her decide whether or not to tell her husband…
You know, I was just thinking that if I were a dwarf and heard someone using those phrases, I’d actually be more likely to think they were making fun of dwarves than anything else. Which is actually rather worse than just thinking that the king or the sons of Elrond have some verystrange wishes. Either way, Aragorn owes Gimli big time now.
Arwen is wonderful in this. Her mother and grandmother would be proud! Her powers of persuasion have obviously been finely honed over the years. And the best part is that she has no shame whatsoever in using her, uh, skills to handle her husband. I love the little moment shared between herself and Gimli.
‘Let the secret tongue remain in the safekeeping of the dwarves’ Good man.
And Gimli is happy :-)
Author's reply
No point at all spoiling it now! When a joke's been running over 2000 years and is so old it has whiskers bushier than Gimli's, you might just as well let it ride!
Well - Aragorn was embarrassed enough by the information himself - he really didn't want to know what he'd been saying - so he was overcome with a wave of protectiveness for his foster brothers. Of course, once his natural buoyancy has had a chance to revive, he will see the point in continuing the gag. And relish every slip of their quicksilver elven tongues.
No more developments, she sobbed, please. I have decided (!) that Elladan and Elrohir didn't really spend a huge amount of time of / with / near dwarves. In their younger years, Elrond and Glorfindel (who are in on the joke) were more of less in control of them - and what contact they had was fairly formal. In other words, they weren't about to be spouting what they believed to be bad language. They have enough diplomatic skills to be in control of their tongues. And they know that dwarves really don't much care for outsiders to be speaking their language. (Some exceptions. Possibly Galadriel.) In later years - when they were orc-slaying and beyond - their contact with dwarves was even slighter. Dunedain, yes. Rohirrim, possibly. Men of Gondor - on occasion. Elves of different realms. Dwarves, no. Gimli is the first dwarf in donkeys' years to make it beyond 'slightly suspicious stranger' to 'elf-friend' and the first dwarf who has been close to the Elrondionnath when they have been playing. So he is the first dwarf to have been in earshot of their little slips of the tongue since the ones who taught them in the first place.
But Aragorn does owe Gimli - because dwarves are involved in the rebuilding of the White City, and one accidental use of an interesting expression could cause an International Incident. However, Gimli (this one is NOT going to make it to paper) has a devious little scheme of his own to keep him entertained over the next century.
Arwen is the descendant of a whole raft of very powerful female role models - and she has learned the knack of getting her own way from mistresses in the art! (Not that Aragorn can't wangle his way round her - she wouldn't want him to be a doormat. But they are newly wed and he's been waiting nearly 70 years and it doesn't take much to turn him to mush.) She didn't quite wink. But she could have done!
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

So the twins have been doing this for thousands of years. I wonder how many dwarves have heard them? Gimli is right though. Arwen is quite scary when she sets her mind to something.
Author's reply
Maybe not too many - I hope. After all, they think they are being very rude. And they haven't been that close to all that many dwarves - and then not as friends, until Gimli. Maybe, when they search their memories, they may be able to convince themselves that they have managed to get away with it. Maybe.
Arwen is the cherished daughter and youngest child of a remarkably powerful house. I can imagine that, much like her grandmother and mother, she is pretty accustomed to getting her own way. (Though I think Aragorn must have had - or developed - some pretty good Arwen-managing skills. I can't imagine she would have appreciated a doormat. But wisdom does suggest not getting between an elleth and her older brothers.)

Brilliant Bodkin. I had wondered, previously, whether Arwen knew - after all she is daughter and grand-daughter and we females should stick together! So it was nice to see her in this chapter supporting Gimli's POV!
Giml's Observation of her was very astute. I don't think that Aragorn stands a chance of changing her mind ever either. And what a fun project to last for years!
Author's reply
And I've just had the thought that Gimli might have taken great pleasure in very subtly adding to the twins' vocabulary. Not directly, of course - that would be too obvious. Just, perhaps, using a phrase in their hearing that they could then adopt. And he could score himself on how many and how stupid the expressions.
Arwen in nearly 3000 years old and the descendant of Celebrian and Galadriel. Once she chose to bend Aragorn to her will, I imagine he bent! (Puts a new perspective on who chose whom, really.)

A terrible shock. He was quite disconcerted. At least until he had to fight back the laughter.
Immortality isn't all it's cracked up to be. It must have been almost impossible for the elves to release their sorrow for all the sad things that happened. I hope the BR made up for it. But I doubt it.

‘Most people find that I am pretty capable.’
‘I think you will find that only Arwen claims that,’ Elrohir said solemnly.
‘Or does she insist that he is pretty and capable?’ Elladan asked.
‘It is pretty frightening to think of what she finds him capable.’
Elvish wordplay...you gotta love it, especially when it's suggestive. I also love it that Aragorn picked up his brothers'fractured Khuzdul. Could it be that during the war he was hollering out...stuff? I guess Gimli has a point that the King of Gondor shouldn't be making that sort of mistake, and I'm glad he is so protective of "his" elf. Oh to be there when Legolas learns the truth! I don't know how he resisted teasing the twins about it as long as he did. Great story! ~TF
Author's reply
Poor Aragorn. Little brother - slavishly copying his big brothers' bad language and still subject to being teased relentlessly! Still, it must make him feel at home!
I'm sure Gimli will see that Legolas doesn't make such errors - and he will probably have a word with Aragorn.
Legolas probably didn't know before he sailed, I think (Gimli could have made sure he didn't), and then it was a long time before he and the twins met again. But I think he must have heard them over a good few years - I can't imagine they would keep quiet about their favourite phrases. Maybe it just seemed better to keep it to himself. Perfect! I had hoped that Aragorn had studied enough in his youth to understand the curses, but Gimli quietly telling him is better.

I don't think Khuzdul was considered an essential part of Aragorn's education. Too many other languages. Westron. Sindarin. Adunaic. Quenya, maybe. Rohirric. Perhaps a smattering of the languages of the Southrons.
I hope Gimli does tell him. We wouldn't want the King of the United Realm to stub his toe in front of the dwarves who come to help with the rebuilding and then come out with a phrase that begs to have his body smothered in lemon frosting, now would we!

LOL!
I just loved the opening, with them all enjoying themselves and discussing the twins. You’ve managed get so many different parts of their personalities across before we even see them. I really like the phrase “deadly visions of dancing death that had blazed before the Black Gate.”
The “pretty capable” discussion is just priceless. I’m glad they can all have this time together, although my heart went out to the twins at Legolas’ explanation of their “mask of mirth”.
I’m still grinning away here at Gimli’s discovery of the elves’ use of his language. “The picture of those two offering themselves naked to be footstools for the comfort of aged matriarchs was one that would remain with him as long as he lived." Uh, I’m thinking that image will stay with me for a while too… And Aragorn is using Khuzdul too!! Oh, that’s brilliant. I feel the teensiest bit bad because Elladan and Elrohir probably thought they were doing a good thing in teaching him… bit it’s too funny. I sincerely hope Gimli does tell Aragorn. It would not do for the king to be caught using those phrases! Of course, he’ll tell Arwen… and… *g*
I love Gimli in this. His possessiveness of “his elf” is wonderful, as is his indignation at the thought that anyone might try to play a similar joke on Legolas. Although, I bet there was a time when he’d have tried it on him himself.
More please! :-)
Author's reply
Arwen . . . Yes . . . She really needs to come into the mix, doesn't she!
I'm beginning to feel that Elladan and Elrohir were certainly not suspicious enough when they were young. They let those dwarves play them like fiddles.
Aragorn, of course, as little brother, would have been all ears for picking up all those little pieces of language his elders would rather have kept from him. But he and Gimli and Legolas were the Three Hunters - from the Nine Walkers - they're practically brothers. There's no way Gimli could let Aragorn embarrass himself in front of other dwarves.
Gimli has exempted Legolas from flighty elfhood. Legolas is his friend. Other elves don't get that credit. (Legolas has reversed the process, too, I think.) Gimli can torment Legolas himself, if he wants to - but woe betide anyone else who tries!
I'm glad you liked the alliteration - and the different sides of the twins, including their melancholy. (I have to remind myself that they are happy in the BR and that their happiness will last a very long time.)
There's now another part added to this saga!

I liked Gimli's musing on 'his' elf here, and his possessiveness of Legolas. Yes, I can imagine some dwarves would greet the interloper with veiled insults.
Now, if Gimli warned Aragorn, he'd have told Arwen. I can just imagine her secret delight in her brothers' comments!

A lingering image. Not altogether delightful. (Partially clothed elves are preferable!)
Gimli has grown a lot over the quest - and so has Legolas. But I think they are both at the point where their own elf / dwarf is excepted from the general rules. (They continue to grow in understanding over the next century.)

Thank you. And that beard is very useful for hiding your expression when you don't want the elf to pick up your amusement. Legolas is only Gimli's elf in contrast to all the other flightly creatures who are most definitely NOT his elves, he'll have you know. Gosh, I guess this is really a review for the last 2 chapters.
You do know I worship your skill at writing so swiftly and with such wonderful language, don't you? Eh, the eloquent kind and banter, that is. Letting us see how everyone but the twins knows and will not tell is quiet hilarious.
The exchanges between Elrond and Glorfindel were great and some plot bunnys hopped in after that chapter for a lot of readers, I'm sure. The exchange between Celeborn and Galadriel was just as marvelous and touching. Eh, both kinds of touching, that is. Very nice bit of deduction on his part. But, would he, wise elf that he is, really be that ignorant of the language of the Naugrim? I wonder. That also seems "both unlike him and highly irritating". Just wicked - all three of them! You handled the ambiguities perfectly.
Darn, I simply cannot stop myself from nitpicking...! They are the same height.
Very much looking forward to the next segment and perhaps the twins catching on that everyone else - even Daeradar! - knew what they were saying all along. ;)
Author's reply
Plot bunnies breeding like - well - like rabbits!
I think Celeborn would not willingly speak or understand the tongue of the Naugrim. Perhaps he knew more of it once - but language changes must have seemed very rapid to the elves, so maybe modern Khuzdul was to him like us listening to Anglo-Saxon. Anyway, for these purposes, it is not one of the languages in which he is fluent!
They are the same height. You can rest your head on the back of someone the same height - more shoulder, I suppose. Just where his shoulder meets his neck, in my mind's eye. Cheekbone on his spine. And, if your are trying to dodge looking Celeborn in his very sharp eyes, you could dip your chin to inspect the collar of his robe.
This small revelation gave them a moment of closeness, I think. Made them feel a family still - and brought a happy, laughing Celebrian to be with them for a while.
Thank you. This has been such fun - like being on a runaway train, with new ideas constantly being thrown at me. And it's five parts now, not four!

And Lord and Lady have another reason to find intimacy....
Lovely!

I see this as a small revelation that reminds them both of a happy mischievous Celebrian - one able to take joy in the presence of her family, as well as to give them a daughter who will be there, strong and joyful and healed, when at last they set foot on the shore of the Blessed Realm. Such a foolish thing to help lift the shadow of grief that plagues them - but so often it is something foolish that breaks open the blankness of sorrow and regret.
And they have each other.

But to the vignette. Nice choice of setting, and the little glimpses of evrything: celeborn´s disregard for dwarves as a race, putting them all in the same "box" and Galadriel being vexed by that! And I've had in mind to do something or other with Glorfindel in the BR for ages, but just not got round to it yet. But I have so many things on the edge of wanting to do them. And not enough hours in the day!
