Such a good chapter!! Pippin naming Gimli's ax, Sam helping with paddling the boat, dear Frodo starting to realize that his wound will never fully heal. A lot for the Fellowship to deal with.

Tigger · 30 November 2005 · Chapter 9: Nazgûl

Wow...What an interesting idea you bring here m'dear. That Frodo would wonder about him really being "cured" by Elrond after feeling the effects of the Nazgul being near. If he's wondering, then Sam's got to be wondering too now. Oh *no*...I've already got three stories to finish. I don't need another plot bunny streaking my way right now. Now see what you've done!!! ;oD I love how Aragorn realized what was going on and to bring Frodo out of his anger. He's right, if anyone in the Fellowship has a right to be cross, it's Frodo. And Boromir's need for the Ring to go to Gondor is showing itself even stronger. It is so bittersweet that a truly noble person w/the best of intentions ended up being corrupted by the Ring. That's true for many though. Loving this story and looking forward to more. :o)

Yes, I think that at times Frodo, particularly when tired, frightened, and in great pain as he was then, would get angry and had every reason to do so. And we all bless the old Hobbit for making certain Frodo had that protection as he left Rivendell. That Frodo would only realize then that his shoulder could hurt to respond to the presence of the Nazgul is an interesting concept. Glad you thought of having Aragorn point out its advantages.

Larner · 30 November 2005 · Chapter 8: Choices

Missed this one as it was posted. The poor hobbits, having now to make that decision, and now being aware that Boromir is being tempted by the Ring. A wonderful shorter chapter.

harrowcat · 30 November 2005 · Chapter 9: Nazgûl

Giving Gimli's axe a name - Very Pippinish! *g* Mithril or no, I'm sure that hurt quite a bit." Strider, the master of the understatement! And Frodo's anger at learning thetruth is a very believable reaction. Great Chapter Shirebound I am really enjoying this. BTW I loved Boromir's reaction too.

layne67 · 30 November 2005 · Chapter 9: Nazgûl

First time here and I love this chapter though I see that I have to read this story from the very beginning. Nicely done!

Linda Hoyland · 30 November 2005 · Chapter 9: Nazgûl

I'm very glad you have gone into detail with the arrow inncident as it seems so rushed in the book. You also give Boromir more reasons for acting as he does and I like the way Sam overcomes his fears.Another enjoyable chapter of a great story.

*frowns* I forgot to leave a review? *frowns deeper* That's not good *slaps hand* Silly me. You know I love every chapter of yours. I still remember that scene vividly in the book... very good scene, it's a pity it wasn't filmed. It would have been awesome! Can you imagine Legolas shooting the wraith out of the sky? The company struggling to get to the other side? All the arrows all around them? That would have been brilliant. Well, I am absolutely swamped with homework, and I'm a bit sick... my Thanksgiving was spent with bronchitis -_- Gah, being sick is not fun... no wonder Aragorn hates me *snickers* I'm so evil >:) Cannot wait for the next chapter! ^^

Baggins Babe · 29 November 2005 · Chapter 9: Nazgûl

This was a very tense and believeable chapter - poor Frodo, ever the target for the orcs and drawing the Nazgul like a magnet. Nice to see that Frodo can be angry sometimes, and with reason. He's usually portrayed as impossibly saintly and it is nice to see him displaying real traits. I loved Gimli's conversation with Pippin - he's an old softy really! And Pip's name for the axe is perfect. Orc-bane indeed!

French Pony · 29 November 2005 · Chapter 9: Nazgûl

Ah, the Nazgul puts in an appearance. That was thrilling.

Andrea · 29 November 2005 · Chapter 9: Nazgûl

Orc-Bane! I think, Pippin found the perfect name for Gimli's axe! The river scene was simply great. Maybe, Frodo really hadn't realized before how badly he was hurt by the Morgul knife and how close he was to becoming a wraith. And good old Aragorn, always the practical ranger, is right: his ability to "sense" the Nazgul can (and will) be very useful at times.

Dreamflower · 29 November 2005 · Chapter 9: Nazgûl

Poor Frodo! It had never occurred to me to wonder how he would have felt to realize that he could still feel the Morgul wound, and that he was still sensitive to the presence of Nazgul! But of course, the first time it happened, he must have felt dreadfully angry to know the pain was coming back--really the first intimations of what he would suffer the rest of his life!

aprilkat · 29 November 2005 · Chapter 9: Nazgûl

I love the way you are weaving your story throughout the actual book events. Legolas bringing down the fell beast is one of those memorable moments. Also, their experience makes more clear movie Aragorn's reluctance to move toward the eastern shore until night falls again... The interaction between Pippin and Gimli was wonderful. You keep ALL the members of the Fellowship connected throughout this story, letting us understand from whence comes the strength of this bond and its importance to the Quest and to Frodo.

Lindelea · 29 November 2005 · Chapter 9: Nazgûl

What a lovely moment between Pippin and Gimli! Your expansion on the original scene, close to the Eastern shore, was very true to the original work, and gripping to read. "Cross" indeed! Very hobbity.

SlightlyTookish · 29 November 2005 · Chapter 9: Nazgûl

The boat sequence was very exciting - you had me on the edge of my seat! And I especially enjoyed seeing Pippin and Gimli interact at the beginning. I love their friendship :)

Ariel · 29 November 2005 · Chapter 9: Nazgûl

I think reading so many h/c fics where the hobbits, particularly Frodo, are made weak and girlish that I've become very sensitive to fics that stray towards such treatments. I know lots of people like it so I don't complain but I wanted to thank you for this chapter and at last showing me a defiant, resolute Frodo rather than just telling me he is so. I very much appreciated it.

SurgicalSteel · 29 November 2005 · Chapter 9: Nazgûl

Yet another great chapter! I adore protective!Gimli with Pippin - neatly foreshadows the Gimli who's willing to search through corpses on a battlefield to try to find Pippin. And Aragorn's so gentle with Frodo, trying to get him to see what good he can from the results of his wounding. Just lovely!

Cuthalion · 29 November 2005 · Chapter 9: Nazgûl

The Dwarf was beginning to think he had been given a task as impossible as finding mithril on the moon; he hauled the hobbit back just as Pippin was about to dash off for the third time. *snickers* And the rest - simply marvelous. I like Aragorn's remarks about the wound; very clever and convincing. I'm eagerly looking forward to more!

Garnet Took · 29 November 2005 · Chapter 9: Nazgûl

Once again you have created a wonderful chapter. That scene at the beginning with Pippin and Gimli on watch was so sweet. I know Gimli would never admit it, but he has a very large soft spot for the hobbits, and I suspect Pippin in particular. You really fleshed out that moment on the river where they reach the rapids. That is a very frightening moment that the good Professor just kind of glossed over. We never got to see much of the Fellowship's reaction once Legolas shot down the Nazgul. I still wonder what was going through Merry's mind after such a near miss. And what about Pippin? He almost saw his best friend shot, and he has to realize just how easily it could have been himself. Oh, so many questions, so little time. Thanks for an update. I really am enjoying this one a lot. Garnet Took.

Pearl Took · 27 November 2005 · Chapter 8: Choices

"If only one of the eagles could fly Frodo to the mountain, he mused, and he could just toss the Ring overboard... then just a short flight home... if only... finally he fell asleep." Wonderful :) I love the imagery of "...toss the Ring overboard..." That would have been a blessing indeed - though the story would be so much the less for it ;) LOL Well done - so very well done :)

periantari · 21 November 2005 · Chapter 8: Choices

just want to tell you i'm enjoying your version of the Fellowship's journey in the Great River--i really enjoyed the last chapter about choices-- It does sound very reasonable that Aragorn would alert Merry to the imminent decision that he and Pippin must make. I would even think that Aragorn would insist upon them following Boromir to Minas Tirith as he would insist that Legolas and Gimli to do so as well... I think in The Breaking of the Fellowship, it was mentioned that only he and maybe Legolas? (not sure) should accompany Frodo and Sam... I loved that bit with Gimli and Legolas musing about the usefulness of hobbits. That was just so precioussss! =) And i also enjoy references to Frodo's light. =) Good job! I'm keeping up with this as well! Can't wait for more. :)

Cuthalion · 21 November 2005 · Chapter 8: Choices

If only one of the eagles could fly Frodo to the mountain, he mused, and he could just toss the Ring overboard... then just a short flight home... if only... finally he fell asleep. Yes, if only... but what would have become of this awesome story? But I admire the faithfulness of Merry and Pippin - and Merry's sharp-eyed understanding that something is utterly wrong with Boromir. Extremely well done, dear.

SlightlyTookish · 20 November 2005 · Chapter 8: Choices

Of course Merry and Pippin would continue on! I loved their little conversation and also all the special care Pippin has been getting. And Merry's observation that Pippin is growing up...*loves*

Linda Hoyland · 20 November 2005 · Chapter 8: Choices

i liked the way Aragorn talked to Merry about having to choose where to go and how Pippin had already chosen.Poor Boromir, the tradegy is growing closer and this story brings out just how tragic events were.

pipspebble · 19 November 2005 · Chapter 8: Choices

* "Are you scared something will happen to me in... in...?" He pointed across the River. Merry just looked at him and said nothing. "Silly," Pippin smiled and touched his still-tender bruise. "Something can happen anywhere." Merry sighed. "You're growing up so fast, Pip, it's hard to keep up." Pippin lay down again, a bit sorry he had sat up so fast. "I'm scared for you too, you know." He was quiet for a moment. "But I'm mostly scared for Frodo. Let's help him get rid of that awful Ring and go home. All right?" * Oh, I just adore this exchange! So brave, the both of them, so loving, so loyal. I've loved this story from the start, just not said so because of life's current craziness. But this is a gem dandy, and I'm enjoying every word of it. Especially the above passage. :-)
