I enjoyed this story so much and I have read it a couple of years ago. I mailed you then because I didnt know how to become a member.I decided to read it again and it is so romantic, humourus and sexy . I laughed so hard at the chaperonescenes, the beard on Cirdan, Glorfindel and Celebrian at breakfast where they manage to get a double entender " do you want another tart dear", no I prefer something sweeter hahahaha! Or maybe I just have a slightly naughty mind about that line haha! Glorfindel had it coming and he deserved it at breakfast. And bedroomscenes ofcourse. That was so hot and so much fun with Elrond and Celebrians comments :D ! You have managed to create a lovemaking without the bad words and uncomfortably simple "porn"feel to it as in other fanfiction I have come across where that seems to be the only thing that matters to squeese in as many nasty descriptions as possible..And Glorfindel should have a wife too- hes so fun and attractive in in your story:D ! You really feel how happy Elrond and Celebrian are:) If you have written other stories I must read them as well as you are a good storyteller. Take care:)/ Marianel, Sweden .

this so describes the peoblem eith knowledge, when it comes time to apply it close to home there is never enough information available; imagine the terror of a distressed unborn fea calling to its parent, how nerve wracking not to be able to touch and calm it.

Author's reply

I am glad that touched you. It did me too - angst just seems to wind it's way into almost any story about Elrond.

Idril Telrunya · 6 November 2008 · Chapter 1: First Comes Love (Elrond)

I really enjoyed the story, I haven't found many Elrond/Celebrian stories on the net.

Author's reply

Elrond and Celebrian don't seem to be a popular couple, probably because it is backstory to the book and not in the movie at all!

Idril Telrunya · 6 November 2008 · Chapter 2: Then Comes Marriage (Celebrian)

Oh wow, my face is burning right now.. Anyways, good story!

Author's reply

I am glad you enjoyed. I seem to remember my face burning when I wrote it. :>)

Fimbrethil · 3 October 2006 · Chapter 3: A Double on the Baby Carriage...

Wow, another masterpiece! I could easily believe that Tolkien himself had authored these stories. I especially enjoyed Chapter 3. The way you moved from Celebrian's anxiety and nervousness to Elrond's understanding, to their joy in conceiving a son, to their worry and anxiety about the child's fea, to the unexpected arrival of Celeborn and Galadriel, to their wonder and delight at having conceived twins; marvelous, brillant! You are a true master of the art of writing and keeping us on the edge of our seats. Bravo, keep up the good work. Fimbrethil

Author's reply

I am glad you enjoyed this.. it was so good to write this (mostly) happy time in their life!

elliska · 19 December 2005 · Chapter 3: A Double on the Baby Carriage...

Oh I really enjoyed their decision to conceive their first child(ren)--I like Elrond's 'smugness' over his unique abilities and again that was a delightfully steamy scene. But honestly, the part I like most about this is the elfy way they are prepared to conceive and how you showed them worrying because they didn't entirely understand what was happening since neither had experienced twins before. I thought that was really clever (poor things). This was a really great story and I am so glad you wrote it. I love seeing Elrond and Celebrian in some of their happiest moments. :-)

Author's reply

I admit I got a little hung up trying to imagine what parts of conception an elf could control and how that fit in with what we know of reproduction. The 'twinning' happens at 4-12 days, which of course made me wonder about when the fea became known - and was it two fea in one zygote, or did the fea split... and yeah, I'm nuts. But I know it and have admitted I have a problem...

elliska · 19 December 2005 · Chapter 2: Then Comes Marriage (Celebrian)

I love Galadriel's conversation with Celebrian in this--don't I remember you saying that you wrote this for something else and ended up cutting it? It is so perfect here. So true the power Celebrian has because of Elrond's love for her. I love those lines! And I must say I amused myself contemplating what Celeborn said to Elrond and what Galadriel's brothers must have said to Celeborn. *Scary* And I loved Cirdan in this along with the gift he gave Celebrian and her touching his beard--it would be irresistible. And as for the rest of it...*fans self* *whew* Geez, um I think I need to read that several (hundred) more times. ;-) Seriously, that was very well done! Loved it! And I still have another chapter. :-)

Author's reply

I still have that piece... not sure if I will find a place for it, but I wrote kind of a precursor to it here - worked in nicely for that scene, should i find a place for it. I like writing Galadriel and Celebrian together - I can't see Celebrian as some pale reflection of her mother. As for the rest of it... we can thank Elrond for going to visit you! It turns out when Elrond is not around to distract Celebrian, she is a quite forthcoming muse! I am glad you thought it was well done - I don't normally tread beyond PG13.

elliska · 19 December 2005 · Chapter 1: First Comes Love (Elrond)

Catching up with reading again and I was so excited to see this here! How many times can I tell you that I love your Glorfindel. He was wonderful here, helping/making Elrond see what he was missing. I love how you show how well these two know each other--how easily they read each other. And their 'courtship.' Hehehe--I always felt sorry for Elrond having to court Celeborn and Galadriel's daughter while all of Imladris watched. You did a great job playing with that. You are truly cruel to have Celeborn appear at the moment that he did. Poor Elrond! I was laughing much harder than that tree. But I loved the note and the tryst--that was perfect, a perfect way for them to plight their troth. I just loved it. And I thought you did a great job showing the first time Elrond allowed himself to touch her fëa. I love that elfy sort of thing. “And you were chaperoned.” *Snort! On to the next chapter. :-)

Author's reply

I was thinking as I wrote this that nothing Elrond ever did was probably 'private' - too many people around! I could just see (my version of) Celeborn having great fun teasing Elrond - until Celebrian made him stop, of course. Glorfindel does shine at times, doesn't he? And then he is so happy to fade into the background. He is a great supporting character for that reason! (I think he just doesn't want me to delve to deeply into his life, but he says he is happy to keep the spotlight on Elrond...)

Dot · 17 December 2005 · Chapter 3: A Double on the Baby Carriage...

Oh wonderful. Magical. Beautiful. I love the banter and easy relationship between Glorfindel and Celebrían, but I love even more the fact that Glorfindel knows when he has gone too far and apologises for it. LOL at Elrond getting straight into the spirit of things! I’m sitting here smiling at the effect he has on her. A frisky Elrond is apparently a difficult person to talk to. Particularly if he’s licking your ear. I felt a little sorry for Celebrían, though, because she genuinely did want to talk to him. I was glad to see that he knew what she was thinking so that she didn’t have to struggle to voice it, even though it didn’t surprise me at all. Gil-galad’s begetting day! Oh, that’s perfect. I love the idea of her knowing that it should be today, without being able to figure out why. And Elrond is naked under his robes! LOL! She’ll have to try harder if she wants to surprise him. I kind of like the idea of him always going about naked beneath the robes, though… I’m always fascinated by the idea that they can control their bodies to the extent that they can choose when to have a child – these children are always wanted and treasured! - and you write it wonderfully. It makes this moment so much more special and it’s romantic and beautiful and filled with love. How amazing it must be to be able to feel that moment when new life begins. One of my favourite parts is when Glorfindel realises by looking into Celebrían’s eyes – and she promptly gets as much enjoyment as possible out of his shock! It’s right, really, that Glorfindel is the first to know, even if he can’t say anything yet. All the stuff about the fëa and what it could mean that Elrond can’t reach it is so interesting. My heart went out to the two of them as they worried about their child. What an awful time. And I really felt for Glorfindel too, who must have been very troubled when he knew their news and yet there seemed to be no joy. Well, thank heavens for ancient elves with good memories!! You made me smile to see Galadriel and Celeborn’s amusement and happiness, Celebrían’s sheer joy and Elrond’s shock! Lovely moment. And an even more magical moment is when Elrond suddenly becomes aware of the two fëar and can even already get a sense of the people they will be. I admit I welled up a little at that! Having Celebrían sleep while her family gather around her to share this makes it more touching – it’s sad to think that these three will be looking down on her again when she’s suffering rather than content, but that’s far in the future and for now it’s a beautiful and special time. I love the idea of the official announcement, even though they can all tell (and news seems to travel very fast in Imladris!). There seems to be great delight in the idea of twins! Of course, it does make wagering more interesting. Hilarious that Glorfindel had them all running off to the library! It seems Celebrían can look forward to spending the next few months either eating or sleeping. I hope she doesn’t neglect her duties in keeping Elrond from becoming too serious ;-) The ending, with the lullaby, is lovely. There’s such a sense of family in Imladris, with Elrond and Celebrían at the centre of it. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, Nilmandra. Not only have you given me some rather delicious images of Elrond to treasure, you’ve shown us the depth and beauty of the love between Elrond and Celebrían. Definitely one to be read over and over again :-)

Author's reply

Writing frisky Elrond was fun! This was a completely different look at them, I hope, and so nice to show some joy in their lives. I have always thought that Celeborn and Galadriel was likely another great love story as well. They remind of a Lion and Lioness :D. It was really fascinating to think about what control over reproduction the elves had - what they coudl control, when they first new the fea of the infant.. and then try to reconcile that with what we know of reproduction - fertilization of the egg, the implantatin of the zygote, when twinning happened. And of course, in reconciling it I managed to create angst for Elrond! All I can say is I promise that Arwen's conception and delivery were completely angst free. I am glad you enjoyed it.. I stepped out of my comfort zone here, so I am really glad it worked. I hope you enjoy it over and over again. :D

I am glad you liked it - its outside of the norm, but very engaging to write :)

Dot · 16 December 2005 · Chapter 2: Then Comes Marriage (Celebrian)

So. Wow. Go Elrond! No wonder you want to be Celebrían. Ok, with great difficulty I’ll drag myself back to the beginning of the chapter… :-) I really like the fact that Celebrían doesn’t start this day with any hint of nerves. She’s excited but there’s also almost a serenity to her as she finally becomes what she has longed for. Of course, she had the best of the best organising her wedding! The dress sounds beautiful. I laughed when I read the bit about it having very few clasps, having an inkling of what was to come later!! I’m always fascinated to see Galadriel as a mother. There’s actually something very special about her relationship with Celebrían, even though it’s completely different to the magic between Celebrían and Celeborn. I love what she says about Elrond, and the insight she gives her daughter. It’s a nice glimpse into what Galadriel feels for Elrond too that she knows that the thing he needs most is to be loved. It also shows the respect Celebrían has for her mother as well as Elrond that she is willing to listen to this, rather than just expect Elrond to be told to look after her. I’m trying to imagine the conversation between Finrod and Celeborn! For all that she speaks so casually about that now, I’d love to know what Galadriel made of his words at the time. And for whose sake Finrod said it… Of course, I highly doubt Celeborn disagreed with his words, but like Galadriel says, it must have been a bit of a shock! I thought the little hints about Celeborn and Galadriel’s relationship was a great touch. As well as being intriguing, it proves that no matter how much love is there, everyone needs to work at a relationship, that there’s give and take, good times and bad – and yet the love will endure and grow stronger over the years. Er, centuries. Actually, it’s a nice foreshadowing of the trouble between Elrond and Celebrían in HL2. I nearly melted at the image of Celebrían twirling under her father’s hand! Celeborn is doing quite well, actually, for the father of the bride. But I suppose it helps that he and Galadriel are so fond of Elrond too. I’m afraid I had great difficulty in giving poor Círdan my attention after reading about the “resplendent Lord of Imladris”… I thought it was one of the funniest moments of the whole chapter, though, when Celebrían actually whimpers when he steps between her and Elrond :-D There’s something very sweet about both Círdan and Celeborn trying to mind Celebrían’s outfit. I do love your happy!Círdan. I’m almost as glad to see him experience such joy as I am for Elrond. He’s obviously waited a long time for this day. And his gift is very generous and fitting. It has so much meaning for Elrond and represents so much history. I think Círdan really likes Celebrían too! Perhaps because she has such a childlike spirit. LOL at her touching the beard! I thought you did a great job with the wedding, creating a sense of the day and of the atmosphere rather than telling us everything in detail - we share Elrond and Celebrían’s experience of knowing the joy and beauty and celebration happening around them but being too distracted to give anything their full attention. One of the most beautiful images is of the little circle of family against the setting sun as the vows are exchanged and blessings spoken. I love the idea of a very intimate moment in the midst of the celebrations for those who care so much about each other. How lovely of Galadriel and Erestor to do up the rooms for them. I think if I needed something done efficiently around the house, it’s these two I’d want! You know what I love most about the whole love-making scene? How Elrond seems to know exactly what to do. This is new for both of them, but he seems to instinctively know what will tease her and give her pleasure and I just love seeing him so unselfconsciously take control. Equally, it was fun to see her explorations. I don’t blame her for fainting. I nearly did just reading it. I laughed when Elrond answered her private musings! He can be very wicked sometimes. But I like the little reminders that for them, this is more than just about joining of the body. I’m sure there’s probably something more intelligent I could be saying if I could just get past how hot this is! Wow! You say you’ve never written anything like this before? Hmm. Well, thank you for letting us share your fantasies such an intimate and important time – please don’t think less of me if I tell you I enjoyed every single second of it :-D And it seems Celebrían has learned something by the next morning. Oh yeah, she’s going to be good at de-stressing her husband. I love seeing these two so playful and happy. And I can just imagine the knowing grins everyone else was wearing when they turned up for lunch! Right, onwards… Something tells me there could be children in their future… :-)

Author's reply

So. Wow. Go Elrond! No wonder you want to be Celebrían That obvious, huh? LOL, I do love them together. I love Elrond happy like this. I enjoyed writing the mother-daughter scene. I have wondered what kind of mother Galadriel was, and its hard for me to imagine her as a bad mother. She has grown wise and seen much. Also, her relationship with her daughter is one of those things that makes her just like everyone else. She is not this Queenly figure, this super powerful elf, the object of wrath and desire by various males who either hate her or fall in love with her -she is just Galadriel, Celebrian's mother. I did have to think about the concept of the wedding and how uptight everyone might be. I didn't want it to be too modern in that sense, of how we make weddings into these affairs where quite often we forget what really is important. Brides so worried about the table decorations are not thinking about their husband to be. I like it when the wedding is a stepping stone to a big life change and that is the focus - its the two becoming one that is important. I thought you did a great job with the wedding, creating a sense of the day and of the atmosphere rather than telling us everything in detail Cool... if she had noticed every detail, then Elrond faded behind those details and I wanted him to fill her thoughts. And if you thought it was romantic and a little erotic, I am pleased! I hope you meet and marry someone who becomes your Elrond and fills your thoughts and desires. Marriage should be wonderful - work, and filled with trying times and so on.. but the actual committment between husband and wife is something sacred. I love that they were virgins, that the two becoming one was a joinng of not just bodies, but minds and souls. As it should be, I think. My fantasy encompasses all of that, I admit! I was well pleased at the end of this. Thanks as always for your wonderful reviews. :>)

Being as I am a sucker for a good romance, I had to read this. I may not be an elfy type but this is sweetly done and not too esoteric for those of the hobbit persuasion to understand. I am looking forward to the rest of it.

Thanks, Ariel, I hope you enjoy it. Its a change for me, but a good love story hopefully transcends a lot of boundaries.

Oh my, that was good! Such a sweet, romantic story... Work has delayed all holiday fun these two weeks. ;( I did not like having to wait til today to read even the first chapter. But then, I got to read it all in one sitting. *mmmm-boy* 'twas Very Enjoyable for not having to suspend the pleasure by the necessity of waiting for the next chapter to be posted. ;) Anticipation is over-rated sometimes. Poor Elrond and Celebrian getting such a late start. Thank goodness for a valiant friend to propel him forward. Celebrian has a lot more patience than I would have in her place! But then, she is a lady. Weddings and wedding nights are meant to be special! Big, beautiful, and bountiful! Drinking and dancing! Shivaree! woops, not elves, I guess. It was really lovely how their House was home to not only an extended family, but a close community. An ideal setting for raising a family. The ideas about conception and souls were very interesting - and harrowing. I felt so sorry for both nervous parents and so pleased when the older more experienced parents calmed their qualms. Just one of many *appreciated* realistic touches. I certainly hope you do more of these side-stories from HL. I just love this sort of tasteful historical romance. No ripped bodices necessary. Thanks for sharing this!

Author's reply

LOL, glad you liked it. My beta told me I couldn't post it all at once, it was too long... so you'll have to tell daw about anticipation :D. No ripped bodices necessary. That is always the fear, that romance/love scenes become just another bodice ripper, which is not what I wanted, but certainly what I feared. I hope it did come through as a love story. Thank you for your kind words. :)

This should come with a " Do not read at work" warning, NIlmandra! I was reading it early this morning while waiting for the printer to spit out my last reports and I feared it would go in flmaes! It's good to see that you're enjoying yourself.. and sharing with the rest of us. I bet the twins never received this piece of History LEsson... and it was good to read about a lighthearted...Elrond. GLorfindel was superb in his preparations, a hundred-years' old permission to marry the lady! It was very fun and wonderfully hot... surely the snow melted around your home! I apologize for being so late in reviewing this, yet it was a very welcome surprise!

Author's reply

This should come with a " Do not read at work" warning, NIlmandra! LOLOL... we don't want Beliond to ask why you are fanning yourself :D. No, the twins never learned this in their History Lessons, and Elrond is so weary by the end of the story that he remembers her love, but not so much the passion. What better reason to write from Celebrian's POV? I love her version of events!

Elena Tiriel · 15 December 2005 · Chapter 3: A Double on the Baby Carriage...

Ah, Nilmandra, this is just delightful! As far as I'm concerned, you write the definitive Elrond and Celebrían, and this story just increases the pleasure.... Thank you for sharing it with us! - Barbara

Twins!!! Yay!! And now the family has been extended. I love the portrayal of Glorfindel. He is such a guardian for the family. Yet I'm sure he has to put up with little bits of stress here and there. Again, the chapter was just as nice as the last two. Now I get to look forward to History Lessons:3rd Age. ^_^

Author's reply

LOL, the begetting was fun to write. I liked them playful like this while making a decision of great joy. Yes,now back to HLIII and angst :/ I have to write Elrond happy to deal with all the sorrow of that story.

Bejai · 14 December 2005 · Chapter 3: A Double on the Baby Carriage...

Glorious, Nilmandra, as always. I have a soft spot in my heart for Elrond and Celebrian, and count you as one of my favorite writers (fanfic and regular fic alike). Any opportunity to get a glimpse into Imladris through you artful prose is cause for celebration. This was breathtakingly sensual while being blessedly tasteful, a masterful interpretation of elven love and childbearing. Bravo!

Author's reply

Thanks Bejai. I am glad you liked it - and it was fun to write. This was breathtakingly sensual while being blessedly tasteful I am so glad to know this! Tasteful is important... yet I wanted their passion to come through. All great loves stories should be those things. Thank you.

Loved all of the concern of Elrond's. It's interesting to see him in a position of not knowing what to do and watching him handle it - even if he handles it badly. Loved Glorfindel's surprise at discovering the news and the bet at the end. The sensing of the new llife/lives was beautiful to read. Very well done!

THis is great! I've never seen you write something this steamy before. Well done!

Author's reply

Oh, I'm glad you think so. The bonding of the elves was more than physical, it was also of the mind and spirit, which seemd to me an intense thing. The joy they must have felt in marrying for love and for all time... if its the right person, it must be wonderful. Thank you.

Ellie · 14 December 2005 · Chapter 1: First Comes Love (Elrond)

This is beautifully done. The forbidden sensuality is nicely combined with the presence of the chaperones. Loved the comment about "old elves". Very nice.

Author's reply

Thanks, Ellie... I like this group of elves 'managing' Elrond so well. And Celebrian deserves sainthood for her patience!

Mandy · 14 December 2005 · Chapter 3: A Double on the Baby Carriage...

Once again, Nilmandra has surprised me. I never thought to be interested in the First or Second Ages, nor the courtship of Elrond and Celebrian (I'm more of a Legolas/Aragorn fan), but knowing how her writing has pulled me in before, I thought I'd give it a shot. This is a wonderful little story. In the film, Celeborn came across as rather one-dimensional; it's nice to see him portrayed as a real person. And to think that at one time Elrond was actually happy. Now, if she could only finish "History Lessons: Third Age," I'd have a new reason to logon. Thanks for this one, and all the others I've read and not reviewed. I especially liked the side plot with Elrohir and Arwen.

French Pony · 14 December 2005 · Chapter 3: A Double on the Baby Carriage...

That must be weird, to be able to feel all the goings-on of pregnancy so early. Just the thought of that poor confused little fëa, only a couple of days old and already suffering the great shock of twinning. It kind of makes me feel sorry for Elves who miscarry, though, if they can feel the fëa so early. It must be a horrible loss, and so many pregnancies miscarry so early. You'd think they'd be more on the lookout for twins, though. Twins tend to run in families, and Elrond's family has a habit of producing them.

Author's reply

I admit that this really got me thinking, as if I haven't thought enough about elves before. If they choose to conceive, I wonder what part of conception they have control over. Can they pick the sex? Is the guy remote control driving a particular sperm while the female is coaxing out an egg? Or is it a little more chancey than that? And if they can control certain factors, do miscarriages really happen? Tolkien wrote that there was no 'fall' for the elves as there was for men. So does that mean their childbearing (the curse for the fall) is not as painful? Ne deaths in childbirth? No miscarriages? And if a person is a soul that has a body, which seems to be the belief Tolkien had in line with the Judeo-Christian teaching, then what exists first? Does the zygote need to merely form.. then it gets a fea? Or does it need to implant? and if so, then what happens if there are twins ... the twinning happens 4-12 days post fertilization.. so does one fea split or two exist in the same zygote until then? If yes, then it implies someone (Eru?) knows that twins are meant to exist and the 'twinning' is under control, not chance. Or perhaps its some predetestined thing. Twins seem very uncommon in elves.. the only twins are in the Line of Feanor and the twins of Luthien's descendents. Tolkien made it seem like a big deal, I think even wrote some theories about the strenght of spirit of the fea or one fea needing two distinct bodies to fulfill some purpose. As for them not thinking about the twins ... those twins did exist but over 3000 years ago! Elwing's brothers were lost/died so young and Elros didn't have twins. Out of sight, out of mind! The whole thing was fascinating and I really had to remind myself that no one but me cared and answering all these questions was not needed for the story. The story was supposed to end with the begetting... until I realized I had to know at least a little of when they knew there were twins ... and well, you see how my mind works. I have enough education to be dangerous. I'll shut up now.

Thank you for another wonderful story, Nilmandra! I have been enjoying all of your writing that I've worked through so far (mostly the History Lessons series), but this one struck a special chord. I love how you portray Elrond and Celebrian's marriage as so full of love and passion. And, my husband and mine's anniversary is at the end of December, so I had plenty of personal joy in this, too. :) This is a marvelous testimony to the joy that can exist in married life - thanks for giving it voice for us!
