Oh, and I meant to mention--and it was the first thing on my mind when I read this yesterday--but as I said, was interrupted: I am so *very* glad that most of the Fellowship is there for the wedding. I loved your description of Merry's and Pippin's rambunctious greeting, and I do so hope that you will give Lothiriel a few moments to make their acquaintance, especially that of Merry, who is going to end up as one of her husband's dearest friends (why else would he travel all the way to Rohan at the age of 102 to be at Eomer's dying bedside?) so she really needs to get to know him.
Author's reply
Merry and Pippin are going to have their grand entrance a little bit later.

· Chapter 5: Chapter Five
I wanted to review this chapter yesterday when I first read it, but was interrupted.
From the very first line:
Nobody had ever mentioned to her that love could be so irritating.
to the very last line: She loved her brothers. She truly did. But she was glad that she was going to get shot of them.
this was an absolutely delightful chapter! I loved the various attempts at talking made by the two principals, and I also loved the details of Lothiriel's morning toilet, her new friends and her new handmaiden sound like wonderful OCs, and I am very pleased to see her making such friends.
Eomer is so aware of his effect on her--that's wonderful; usually in these sorts of romance fics, the male is completely and unrealistically oblivious. Your Eomer is anything *but* oblivious.
I can just imagine that Lothiriel *is* going to be glad to be shot of her brothers. Only Erchirion seems to have much in the way of discretion and tact, and when he gets going with the other two even *he* seem to lose track of those qualities. As for Elphir, he is a pompous twit full of hot air, and I would very much like to see his future brother-in-law prick that self-importance and deflate him. And Amrothos--he can't seem to treat anything seriously. Lothiriel *should* get over that reflex-action of defending him when she knows him to be in the wrong.
As for Amrothos and Merewyn--"couple from hell" might be accurate, but I still think that they'd be cute. I bet if anyone at all could throw him off guard it would be Merewyn, with her propensity for blurting out whatever comes to mind without any thought for consequences (I have an OC like that myself; those sorts of people are usually so sweet that you can't help but like them no matter how frustrating.) while he seldom says anything without trying for effect.
Author's reply
Oh yes, Éomer is very aware of his effects on Lothíriel. He has been aware of it since their first meeting, but he is also aware that she can't keep up with him and usually lets her off the hook and stops short before things get out of hand - most of the time. But Lothíriel believes in studying and learning and she is determined to be an apt pupil. And she certainly has some effects on him.
Her brothers? I love them, because nothing is really known about them and as a writer you can do with them whatever you want. Even mix Amrothos up with an OC.

Great job on your story!!!!!
Well, it’s nice to know that Éomer and Lothíriel made up—quite easily, in fact, much more easier than I would have expected after such a violent argument. You were right, Madeleine, Lothíriel can take care of herself quite easily. Now her only problem is to get used to Éomer’s presence. But I trust you to enable her to do just that. :D
The stone wall thing without mortar was funny, because I thought that Éomer would tell her that the wall did have mortar, except that it was designed to be invisible. Éomer’s betrothed is quite an observer.
And their “compromise” that they reached: Éomer would be riding still, and Lothíriel would still be into her healing studies. In that situation with Gandalf, where it says:
“Oh, not officially,” Gandalf replied in a friendly manner. “But we spoke a few words at the Houses of Healing, Princess Lothíriel. I think you said: ‘You are in my way!’ and I answered: ‘My apologies.’”
I can most certainly picture myself in Lothíriel’s situation. What an embarrassing moment! It’s surprising to know that Lothíriel isn’t the least a bit shy at all; on the contrary, she can be quite brisk, which makes her sound rude and insolent.
Gimli was pretty funny too. He’s rather nosy, and that quarrel between Éomer and Lothíriel was certainly not about the weather. Legolas is just something like an obsessed elf. First he comments on the weather, then he comments her on her elven-blood. The way he said it, it seems as if he could see through her veins and detect what kind of blood flows there.
This quote I found funny because it reminded me of Hagrid in the Harry Potter series. J.K. Rowling stated that Hagrid’s hands were the size of trash can lids.
'The introductions went on for quite some time. Lothíriel met Erkenbrand, Marshal of the Westmark. A mountain of a man with the biggest hands she had ever had to entrust her own to. He had once chosen a wife in proportion to his own configuration and therefore their children, two sons and two daughters, were of similar size. A truly large family. She had never felt so fragile.'
Imagine that: Lothíriel having to allow her hand being “entrusted to” another man’s whose hands are large beyond measure.
'Éomer still held one of her hands in his and suddenly she felt a tug which was becoming all too familiar. He was trying to slide her glove from her fingers. Lothíriel made a fist. She looked up into the green-gold gaze. His grin nearly made her knees buckle but she refused to give in. Finally he raised her gloved fist to his lips and dropped a light kiss on it.'
Wow, Éomer’s sexual desire must be stronger than ever now, I guess. Soon he’s going to become a stripper. Yeecccchhhh!
“What makes you think he can think?” Amrothos butted in. “By now you should have realized that he has the brain of a chicken.”
Man, Amrothos can really be rude when he wants to. Chicken-brain-Elphir. Imagine that! LOL…I personally think, out of the tree, Elphir is the most stupid, insensitive, and grumpy, not to mention him being a killjoy.
Ah yes, the going-into-room-and-slam-the-door-shut technique. It always works. Remember last time when that happened? It was the first time that Éomer and Amrothos quarreled. But this time I have a feeling the argument will stop then and there, seeing as the trio saw that their sister was okay and she just came and yelled at them and retreated without ever letting them say anything.
I did NOT send this on February 15. Instead, I sent it on Valentines Day, and I have no idea why it says the fifteenth, because where I come from, it’s only 11:00 pm. So….
HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!!!!!

The wall of the city is indeed constructed without any mortar. Explanation in a later chapter when Lothíriel sets out to inquire.
Well, Erkenbrand is not modeled after Hagrid, but after a neighbour of mine and his family, who are all very, very tall so that next to them I always feel somehow dwarfed - and I'm not short.
Lothíriel didn't intend to be rude to Gandalf. She just concentrated on her work - and he was simply in her way. I can't stand it when I'm trying to do my job and there are onlooker underfoot.
Door slaming? You could call that our family's distinguishing mark.

That was brilliant! I loved the ending. It is about time she had the last word with her silly brothers. Believe me I've got four of my own, and it feels good to be the last one standing! I am so glad to see that Lothiriel really feels comfortable in Rohan, however I worry for her going into a marriage ceremony she knows nothing about, and she still has not learned the language...hopefully Eomer will prove an adequate tutor! Keep up the great work, can't wait to see what happens in the morning, one more good argument?
Author's reply
In my own experience: you can learn a language only properly when you are in the country where it is spoken. That's the reason why I refrained from having Lothíriel begin to learn Rohirric while still in Gondor. And I considered Westron to be the euqivalent to the medieval Latin, which was the universal language for all of Europe.
But don't worry. Lothíriel is going to find a well qualified teacher.

A very engaging chapter. Loved the chicken brain comment! But I miss Merewyn. I liked it when she chattered.
Eomer is a strong, self confident young man. He must have had a personality of iron to have survived Wormtongue et al and come out like this. Or maybe the hard times made him stronger.
Author's reply
From what we now about Éomer from Tolkien (and unfortunately Peter Jackson's otherwise wonderful films have mislead many people in their perspective of his character)he had indeed a very strong personality, was a keen observer of human nature and a very competent and charismatic leader of his people.
And Merewyn will be back a little later - and in full force!

ah, yes, i understand that feeling lothiriel has--just kick her brother in the shins, HARD!!! but, i can understand her hesitation too, and her reluctance in doing so if she found out that eomer can come stealthily despite all that heavy and rather noise-inducing armor. however, i can tell that the emotion she feels whenever eomer is present is starting to make her feel weary. and it's a wonder why eomer never considers embarassing himself or his betrothed whenever he says suggestive things in front of an audience...especially if one of the audience members was his betrothed's own father. eeeeekkk...
for example, one of his rather humuliating things to say was:
“Mutilating flowers,” he repeated softly. “Those you use for your salves and oils, like sweet violets, roses . . . marigolds.”
well, i think he is rather describing himself. he is the mutilator, and lothiriel is the "flower." he's been trying to arouse her ever since she arrived in rohan.
AND AMROTHOS!!! this is totally getting untolerated. he pops up EVERYWHERE, and it's always whenever lothiriel and eomer are alone together. i can tell that amrothos's appearances are NOT coincidal. and merewyn! she is starting to get on my nerves. can't she tell that lothiriel is obviously discomfited when naked? obviously not. no offense, but i think that merewyn is rather thick...
well, you've done a great work and especially this time, because, if you haven't noticed already, you've written a very long chapter describing such a short period. let me tell you, not many writers can write like that. if you ask me, you are a born writer at heart. :)

As I said before: do not worry about Lothíriel. She is not a helpless flower. Besides her capable tongue (she just needs a bit more experience when dealing with Éomer)she will prove to be quite resourceful when it comes to confronting fully grown men in the future.
And nothing in the vicinity of Amrothos has ever been a coincidence.

Have I said before how much I love the tension between Eomer and Lothiriel? Am I getting repetitive?
And Amrothos! It's just as well his sister loves him. Although - once the tension is relieved a bit - (and I do love the way that poor Lothiriel keeps realising that she is not up to all the innuendo) - Eomer might actually find that he gets on quite well with Amrothos. Amrothos is very intelligent and has a wicked sense of humour that might just appeal to Eomer once he isn't its focus. And Erchirion is charming and rather less of a tease - I loved the way his little sister dragged him away by the surcoat to hiss in his ear. I would love to see them both with Rohirric wives - they would be a great deal better suited than poor Elphir and Frosty.
Merewyn is great too - 'the nice one' and 'the grouchy one'. I loved Lothiriel's hope that she meant Erchirion and instant realisation that she was talking about Elphir. I'll bet Elfhelm is keeping a wary eye on the youngest prince of Dol Amroth. Even though I'm certain he wouldn't want to send his daughter so far from home!
Leading on to Eomer's offence at not being considered 'nice'. Hilarious. I'm sure he'd be reassured if she told him exactly how she does regard him!
I am torn between wanting you to post more and more of this story and a real hope that you never finish documenting this relationship.
Author's reply
Rohirric wives for Erchirion and Amrothos? Intriguing possibilities. Does that mean they let two more ladies from Rohan (besides Éowyn, of course)loose on Gondorian society, or does´poor Éomer has to find "jobs" for his brothers-in-law in Rohan?

On the other hand, perhaps a word or two in Elfhelm's ear, and Amrothos could find *himself* betrothed. I think he and Merewyn would make a cute couple...

I do love your portrayal of Lothiriel's brothers, though, with their varying personalities. And it's nice to see that Lothiriel still gets to be healer in Rohan. Lothiriel was very brave to admit that she finds Eomer's presence confusing - and yet wants more of it! She's done better at admitting her feelings than Eomer has. Of course, Amrothos doesn't take quite as much pleasure in interrrupting her!
She hasn't realised how proud Eomer is of her, though. Eomer just gleams with delight at showing off her talents.
And Elphir isn't showing himself off very well. I expect Imrahil is pleased that Amrothos managed to avoid spitting ale down his neck in his reaction!
Perhaps Elphir and Eothain should get together - they might not have much in common except for disgust at having Lothiriel working as a healer, but it's a start. I like Berenwald - he's just the right sort of healer for a bunch of orc-fighting Rohirrim.
Lothiriel's reaction to the burning is so understandable. And, of course, gave Eomer an excellent opportunity to comfort her! Even if it was in the presence of the High King.
A delightful chapter - with two people who really need to get that wedding ceremony out the way. Before they burst!
Author's reply
It must be difficult for both of them. They met only very few times, they are drawn to each other but both are still uncertain about the nature of the feelings of their soon-to-be spouse. And perhaps even about the genuiness of their own emotions.

this was probably my favorite chapter of this story. you do have a way with you in causing suspense by ending a chapter when the tension is the greatest. that's what makes you so popular a writer. well, this chapter tells me that Eomer is clearly not to messed with. you can tell he has this "don't mess with me" attitude when at the beginning he changes his tone from seductive to sharpness, and later he displays his sarcasm, heavy on the victim as they feel it. it's a wonder Lothiriel didn't collapse from the strain of his penetrating glare and her weariness combined. but, it's nice to know that she and Eomer made up eventually, i would have screamed at you if you kept them mad at each other yet at the same time long for each other's caresses. but, finally, i liked the part when it mentions that the door closed and Lothiriel heard the awful sound of Eothain screaming from the pain and agony as the iron made contact with his skin. it's also funny to know that she can't do anything about it even though i suspect that she wanted to burst back into the room and comfort the victim of agony. and, in the end, Eomer told Lothiriel about his true feelings about her, and their supposed "privacy", because Amrothos pops up out of nowhere and scares both of them to death. it was quite clever of Lothiriel to retreat into her bedchamber to avoid the must-be violent argument between her brother and her betrothed, and to take a well-deserved and long waited for bath. aahhhhhh, life is good.

This chapter has to be one of my favourites out of all your stories--the wordplay, actions, humour, and sexual tension between Eomer and Lothiriel just make this particular chapter a delight to read from start to finish!
I noticed that on Open Scrolls your visual inspiration for Lothiriel was the late Audrey Hepburn and, I must say, that having the image of her in my mind when I read your stories just made the character come to life even more.I could almost hear Audrey Hepburn's voice---and, of course, Eomer would find her the most beautiful woman he had laid eyes on!
I just want to let you know that I have printed out your entire stories for me to read at leisure.I hope you don't mind, but they are much better that many books that I have read and I'm not in the habit of reading romances! Your Eomer and Lothiriel are both irresistable and, as Daw pointed out, Eomer is HOT!
Looking forward to your next story!

Yes indeed, I think somebody like Éomer would like the type of woman Audrey Hepburn represented: delicate, but not short; a beautiful and unforgettable face. And quite exotic for Rohan.

“But right now I feel that the quick and painless death that hemlock provides would be too good for Elphir.”
Poor Elphir. Mind you, he does need a certain amount of torment! He is letting the family down - the rest of them might be quirky, but they are all intelligent! Elphir would be lucky to measure up as a moron at the moment.
If he only realised that Eomer and Lothiriel only need to be in sight of each other for the temperature to rise some twenty degrees! A glimpse of her leg!! I'm surprised Eomer's hands remained steady! A good moment for Imrahil to intervene and bring them both back to the present.
But it only took the sight of blood to overcome propriety and return her to healer mode! Eothain (the idiot) should be glad of that - but I don't know that he will be too impressed.
Merewyn seems a lot younger than Lothiriel - but I suppose she has led a very different life and 17 to 20 is a big gap. And, then, things aren't always what they seem at first.
And, just when we think Lothiriel is going to bathe away the dust of the journey, there at the door is Eomer. Looking at her. And asking for her help. And LACING UP HER GOWN. Oh my. I'm not surprised she turned into jelly and allowed her mouth to do her thinking for her!

Yes, poor Elphir. This one of Imrahil's offspring has to take the rap for my dislike of an acquaintance of mine (one I would rather not be acquainted with at all). I always try to find some real live models for my characters. So if one of my cousins is going to take up reading fanfiction one day, she might find herself personified as Merewyn, including the mop of hair and the untamable tongue.
But there aren't any real life models for Lothíriel and Éomer. They are too good to be real. Or, as Beatrice (Much Ado About Nothing) would put it: they are "too costly to wear everyday."
