Wow...awesome chapter! I do love how Merry is observant and protective of his beloved Pippin. LOL, the "linen closet incident" was cute!
I see more sublte changes here, and as I've said before, I am truly enjoying this tale. Yes, I enjoyed the original, but this is excellent! Thank you for sharing this yet again. :-)

· Chapter 6: Fun, Work, and Plans
I don't know that Aster and Topaz need any coaching in misbehaviour! They seem full enough of mischief as it is.
Pippin might be accustomed to working at harvest time - but I suspect he's a bit out of practice, especially if he's just spent a week in bed! And sword training probably uses entirely different muscles.
He wants to invite Diamond to partner him, does he? He might have his work cut out to convince her - her self-confidence is not her strong point, and she is bound to see the negative side of the attention. While at the same time really wanting to spend time at his side. Still. Pippin has plenty of Took charm, together with a kind heart and an unexpected streak of practicality.
Author's reply
Their skills just needed some refining :)
I'm sorry for the confusion with Pippin's healing time. It has been more than a week that has passed by the time he helps with harvest. Perhaps I should have indicated that more than just by inferance. The healers have him getting up and about in the house before the first week is out and then outside the week after that, so he was already past the first week when he and Diamond have their dance in the garden. It is later in the second week that the girls have their prank. I really don't indicate but it is a while after that that he's helping with the harvest, not later that day nor necessarily even the day after.
I'm also going by Tolkien seeming to have hobbits recover from things quickly. He has Frodo up and alert at the Council of Elrond the day after he first wakes up from his wound. He has Frodo and Sam waking recovered enough to attend a day of celebrating and feasting the very day they awake after needing only two weeks to recover from all their deprevation and injuries from the last part of the Quest. He has Pippin up and waiting table at the feast then later Gimli mentions that Pippin had only first been "up and abroad" the day before, also having had only two weeks to recover from being squashed.
Yes, he has a bit of a challenge ahead of him with Diamond. But he's made great inroads already. It's hard for her not to fall for the hobbit of her dreams :) How different for him though to have a lass he actually needs to pursue!
Thank you so much, Bodkin, for reading and responding so faithfully :) :)

I love the way Pippin handled the lasses prank! A true master of pranks indeed! Now, I think handling the business of getting Diamond to the dance in his company will be a bit more tricky. I do hope he has a good idea for that one.
Author's reply
Hehehehe, he knows good potential when he sees it :)
He has a wonderful plan - he's clever and in love ;)

"He was surpassed in all Hobbit records only by two famous characters of old; but that curious matter is dealt with in this book.”
I remember reading that same passage, and I am one of the folks who take it literally. And don't forget the "One for the Road" Ent-draught Pippin and Merry drank on the way home. ;-)

I had, in fact, forgotten that one. Thank you for reminding me. Apparently that is the one that pushes them over the top (so to speak), allowing Sam's comment at Cormallen to be more correct.

Oh, my gosh, you had me rolling as much--if not more--than the first time, Pearl!! Pippin is such a mischief maker! I needed a good laugh today--and you know why. Thank you!

Interesting. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't it say somewhere in the book that Frodo was 3 foot 6?
God bless,
Ellie
Author's reply
Not that I'm aware of. I hate to admit it, but I don't know where, if ever, Tolkien uses the 3 foot 6 figure. I haven't read any of the History of Middle-earth nor the Lost Tales etc. so it may be in there.

· Chapter 999999: Author's Notes
As Tolkien equated greatness with height, I always figured Frodo was fairly close to four feet in height, and the others shorter than he until the ent draughts. I'd forgotten how tall Bandobras was supposed to be, myself, and appreciate the information. Have four editions of ROTK--one of the original Ace paperbacks, a second edition from the late sixties, the Redbook slipcased edition of LOTR, and the Alan Lee edition. It's been fascinating to see how the story evolved over the years.
Author's reply
Yes, for all that he had his heros be the hobbits, and the hobbits be short, he did seem to equate greatness with height. So it makes sense that he had the Fallohides being taller than the other groups of hobbits and that they were the leaders amoungst the race.

Clever Hobbit, Peregrin Took. And Aster certainly deserved the scare, although I wouldn't have given her more on how to do better next time, myself.
Author's reply
Indeed he is :) I think he wouldn't mind helping her better her skills even if she should ues them on him again. Most pranksters enjoy being the victim nearly as much as being the perpatrator.

Yes, some people have to grow up fast and in that day and age in particular, it would have hindered her socializing. Lads and lasses can both be so blind.

Pippin is kind, certainly, and generous, but still a little famed, I think, for skimming over the surface of life. It'll do him no end of good to look at it from Diamond's perspective.
I don't know that dancing just then was the best thing for him physically just then, but it was definitely good for Diamond. And having aroused his protective nature is a good thing too. For the whole family, I suspect. And she didn't do it on purpose! She's no seductive party lass out to win the future Thain.
Author's reply
No, she's no "party lass". Yes, arousing his protective nature is a very good thing, especially as he knows he was one of those who let her down. He would be moved to make it up to her out of kindness, kinship and friendship even if he didn't feel anything else for her.

Well - some good care there at Long Cleeve. Even to making him a new bed! (Though the struggle to transfer him into it could have been nasty.)
Although you can't do anything after dark, Isengrim, that you can't also do in daylight. And you can't do any of those things while you're unconscious. Except possibly if you sleepwalk.
It'll do Pippin good to spend some time flat on his back getting to know a normal girl rather than wasting time on those light-minded lightskirts - and it seems as if he's already inclined to like Diamond.
Author's reply
Ah, yes - but you never know how might know and talk spreads like wild fire in such a close community as the Shire ;)
Yes, it will do him good to meet someone in a different setting than at parties.

"But then again, there was Diamond. Pippin closed his eyes and smiled a little. Of all the relatives in the North Farthing . . . that he should end up at Long Cleeve Farm, that he would be in Diamond's home. His smile deepened as he fell asleep."
Ooooh! I don't remember this from old version...very nice! :-) The idea that Pippin knew of Diamond before his excursion to the Northfarthing. :-)
The whole scene of the siblings dragging poor Pippin from one bed to the other had me rolling! The healer and his apprentice was the cherry atop a very hobbity chapter (in a very hobbity tale!).
I am thoroughlyy enjoying this wonderful story! Now to get those two together... ;-)

My...I see you've changed a bit more things in this chapter! I so enjoyed the former version, but I absolutely LOVE this one! It flows so smoothly from one scene to the next, everything seeming so real. As I read your tales, I always have this sense of actually being there--witnessing first-hand the events taking place. This shows what a gifted writer you truly are. :-)

Well - he clonked his head, but still remembered who he was! And Diamond knows him. But he might require a bit of recovery time here to unscramble his brains. A lavender pillow might help. And he will (I hope) get a chance to know the kind of girl who doesn't believe that showing her cleavage and enticing him into compromising positions is the best way to win his interest.
