This is fantastic! So much fun. :-) A murder of crows? I don't think that's actually the real term, but it's fun to use... :-P

shirebound · 18 March 2012 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

I just wanted you to know that I still read your lovely stories, I still enjoy them immensely, and I'm so happy you wrote them.

Author's reply

Thanks, Janet! To be honest, I rarely come to SoA unless it's to read your fics and I've completely dropped the ball on reposting anything here. I'm glad to know someone is still reading them, though!! That makes me happy.

Cairistiona · 26 May 2011 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

What a delightful vignette! I can very much see this, you've written it so eloquently and vividly and so true to all characters. Hobbitpile it may be according to Gandalf, but I think I prefer Aragorn's "a larder of hobbits"! What fun you must have had, writing this. It definitely started my day with a smile.

layne · 25 March 2010 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

That was a very delightful read. I was just about to say "a pile of hobbits!" when Gandalf beat me to it :DD I love Aragorn seeing Boromir's obvious affection for Faramir, and how it softened him every which way!

Dreamflower · 16 January 2010 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

I just revisited this delightful fic, reminded of it by a post by LilyBaggins at her LJ! It is *still* just as warm and funny and delightful as I remember it being-- thought you'd like to know it made my morning to re-read it!

Author's reply

Aw, thank you! *beams* I'm so happy to hear that! It definitely brightened my day to get this comment from you!!

julchen11 · 23 May 2008 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

Oh this one made me giggle, sweetie. I don't know the book but I'm sure it's wonderful reading it, right? "Not even for such delights as a ‘knot of toads’ or a ‘thunder of oliphaunts’ am I willing to sacrifice my sleep.” Priceless! I love Gandalf ... and Boromir with tears of laughter, too. Thank you, honey!

Author's reply

It is wonderful reading, so imaginative and clever. I hope there were some light moments on the Road, and it was fun to write about one of them. Thanks, sweetie! *hugs*

Illyria · 2 January 2008 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

Oh, this is lovely, and at the same time heartwringing. The image of Boromir and Aragorn having a lighthearted moment, sharing a common memory, and Boromir's evident love for his brother, is all the more precious because we know what happened to Boromir later. And I love Gandalf's dry interjection, the Men's embarrassed silence and the sleepy murmur from the pile of hobbits. :D Personally I like a tangle of halflings better, I don't know why. :D Thank you so much for the wonderful read.

Linda Hoyland · 25 March 2007 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

Both funny and touching.

Oshun · 4 May 2006 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

I adore this story--what touching characterizations: Aragorn, Boromir, Faramir, Gandalf, etc., etc. You have done so much with so little here. You are so convincing that I find myself wishing I could get a copy of that book!

Author's reply

Thank you so much Oshun! And you may be happy to know that the book really does exist, and most libraries probably own a copy. It's a lot of fun to read, and you'd probably enjoy it. Thank you again for your kind comments!!

Silvae · 24 March 2006 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

Loved it, especially the 'unkindness of ravens'. I have to read that book! This was hilarious. Poor old Gandalf, all those terminology discussion must be so irritating. Oh, and Legolas' "bright dark eyes" were a treat, even though I'm not sure it was deliberate... Cheers, Sil

Author's reply

It's a very fun book- you should definitely read it. I'm glad you enjoyed the story! Thank you for commenting :)

Bodkin · 24 March 2006 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

Such fun to see Boromir and Aragorn bonding over something so silly. Love them sniggering while Gandalf casts up his eyes and asks 'why me?'

Author's reply

I'm glad you enjoyed the silliness. Even Boromir and Aragorn are entitled to a little schoolboyish behavior from time to time, I think :)

SlightlyTookish · 22 March 2006 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

This is adorable! An excellent way for Boromir and Aragorn to pass the time, and I love that Gandalf was the one to spoil their fun (and that he gave Faramir the book!). Excellent! :)

Author's reply

Thank you so much, SlightlyTookish. This was a lot of fun for me to write!

perelleth · 22 March 2006 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

Wonderful! Amusing! and so well documented! I'm sure you had great fun writing this! The book sounds like one of those compendia which remind us that there are other worlds where there is a particular, specifical word for each minute difference or each occurrence in nature or at work! Such richness! Everyone is so in character! but I loved best Gandalf's intrusion. Of course he would know! That was lovely!Adn both men laughng helplessly like children! priceless! And btw, as I was reading the other reviews, please tell eiluj, the other librarian, that in Spanish "lime" is lima and "lemon" is limón, two different words for two different fruits, and that there aren't two words for peaches, but a "pine of words" for slightly different varieties of fruits resembling "peaches":-) Good work!

Author's reply

Thank you so much for this lovely review. I appreciate your comments so much, and I did have fun writing this. And I did tell eiluj your information about limes, lemons and peaches :)) Thank you for providing it!

Grey Wonderer · 21 March 2006 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

Loved it! Enjoyed seeing Aragorn and Boromir have a few light moments together.

Author's reply

Thank you so much, Grey Wonderer! I wanted to give them a light moment, and a chance to know each other better.

eiluj · 21 March 2006 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

Hello from a fellow librarian. I liked that it was Gandalf who realized that book would be perfect for Faramir, and had a copy made for him in Rivendell. And I very much enjoyed your possible terms for hobbits. A murder of crows: that would certainly suit the crebain. My own word musings at work are more likely to be along the lines of why Spanish has two words for peach, yet there is no way to differentiate between lemon and lime. Or why the word used for "overdue" also means defeated in battle.

Author's reply

Hello back to a fellow librarian! Thank you for your kind comments. I have also a message for you from someone else who left me a review: "And btw, as I was reading the other reviews, please tell eiluj, the other librarian, that in Spanish "lime" is lima and "lemon" is limón, two different words for two different fruits, and that there aren't two words for peaches, but a "pine of words" for slightly different varieties of fruits resembling "peaches":-)"

meckinock · 21 March 2006 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

This was so warm, clever and funny. I was enjoying Aragorn and Boromir's discussion thoroughly, but Gandalf's gruff interjection really made me grin. Wonderful!

Author's reply

Thank you! I thought Gandalf might be rather grumpy at that point, and he does seem to have a gruff side at times in the LotR :)

Baggins Babe · 21 March 2006 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

I really enjoyed this story and I love the group names for different species - my favourite has always been an unkindness of ravens and a murder of crows. Love 'a nestle of halflings' but a hobbitpile is a great description. I liked Gandalf's crankiness and Boromir's affection for his brother. Very sweet story.

Author's reply

There are so many wonderful group names that I had trouble narrowing down the ones I used in the story- I would have liked to use many more! Thank you very much for your kind comments. I'm so glad you liked the story :)

Eruanneth_Luin · 21 March 2006 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

Such fun jaunt into the world of animals group names, even though the creatures in question have not a clue that they are in the subject of interest. I liked the fondness you showed of Boromir for his brother, Faramir, and the thought that, yes, they did have some hours and many moments for a bit of friendly interchange. My personal favorite is the ‘nestle of haflings'. Thank you for an amusing little tale.

Author's reply

Thank *you* so much for your comments. I appreciate them very much. 'Nestle of halflings' seems to be the favorite of most people- I guess that means Boromir won the competition :-))

Raksha The Demon · 21 March 2006 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

Quite a charming story! I love the hobbit's murmured 'pass the butter, please' and Boromir's fond memories of his brother; and most of all, Gandalf's cantankerous, very credible reaction to the Men's conversation. And of course, Gandalf was the one who gave Faramir the book!

Author's reply

Thank you very much for your kind words, and especially for finding Gandalf's reaction credible. I hoped it would be. It seemed in character for him.

Arwen of Lorien · 21 March 2006 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

Hehe! How delightful. I can clearly imagin the amusing night you described. You dont see very much, if any light talk between Aragorn and Boromir, so this was nice. They probably needed a few laughs. I loved it when Ganalf woke and chewed the young men out with his knowledge, I think I laughed most then. Yes, Legolas was probably bewildered that his mellon nin suddenly started talking like an elfling. Hehe. :) Hobbitpile! I shall have to tell my friends about this. Namarie & God bless, Arwen

Author's reply

Thank you so much, Arwen. I'm very glad you enjoyed the story, and I'm sure you're right that they needed a few laughs along the way!!

Radbooks · 21 March 2006 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

Oh, a most wonderful and enjoyable story! I, too, think that there had to be lighter moments on the way and I love little moments between Aragorn and Boromir like this.

Author's reply

Thank you! I love little moments like this, too, and very much enjoyed the chance to write about one.

harrowcat · 21 March 2006 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

Ah I see that I am not the only one to be captivated by the image of a hobbitpile, although I prefer the more alliterative 'heap of hobbits! *g* I loved this and it is going on my faviourite list immediately. Now just what is the collective noun for Hobbit-loving Authors on SOA?

Author's reply

Aw, thanks so very much. I'm delighted you enjoyed it! Now I'll have to think about the collective noun for Hobbit-loving Authors on SOA :D

Mum's the Word · 21 March 2006 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

Oh, this is priceless! Each term is appropriate, and I love the lighthearted moment that you've pictured so well. Good characterization and dialogue! Is Lipton's delightful-sounding book available to the public? I'll make a note to check with our library. Blessings and brownies (but don't tell the halflings), Mum

Author's reply

Thank you so very much! I hope the Fellowship did have a few light moments to counteract the dark ones. Yes, you should be able to find the book in your library. It's pretty widely known. I hope you enjoy it if you check it out!

Larner · 21 March 2006 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

A most appropriate exploration of the venery of Hobbits. "Pass the butter, please" indeed! And this is the Hobbit's own term for it, is it? A most amusing example of fanon.

Author's reply

Thank you! I did have fun with this, and hobbitpile is a widely used fandom term, so it seemed appropriate to incorporate it into the tale!

RS · 21 March 2006 · Chapter 1: An Exaltation of Larks

"A hobbitpile"!! I just about died laughing. This is hilarious! "Pass the butter please". Oh my gosh. I thoroughly enjoyed this. I love this moment between Aragorn and Boromir. Very lovely. This just brightened my mood! Splendid story!

Author's reply

Aw, thanks. I'm so glad it brightened your mood. I had fun writing this and thinking of the hobbit names.
