Lovely take on that scene. I especially like that Boromir doesn't see what the hobbits concern truly is. His understand at the revelation is a great character building moment. Thank you for posting this.

First, I offer *my* apologies for not reading this sooner. The notice for this came while I was in St. Louis for a fiddle lesson and got lost in the shuffle of emails when I got home. I was cleaning out old emails today and found it. I immediately came and read it. Wonderful!! I had never really thought much on that wee bit, and Elrond's "suggestion" that Boromir be cautious about winding the horn again any too soon. Leave it to our dear hobbits to set him right :)

Grey Wonderer · 25 June 2006 · Chapter 1: Pride Goeth...

I thought I'd reviewed this! Anyway, I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed it. I love the Hobbits' efforts to make Boromir understand exactly what he's done wrong. I also liked the fact that Boromir feels as if the Hobbits need cheering up or reassuring. I do like it when he is protective of the Hobbits. I loved the bit about blowing the horn to announce Boromir's bath.

Marigold - this was a beautiful little story, I loved it! And it featured my favorite human character along with my favorite hobbits. It's great to see you posting a story of your own! Please do it more often, Cathleen

Author's reply

Thanks Cathleen, I am so glad that you liked it! Have you read Baylor's story "Concerning Hobbits"? This story was styled a bit after that story, and if you liked this one you will love hers : ) I'd love to write more often, but I think I am so much better at poking other people, lol! Thank you again!

sarah · 16 June 2006 · Chapter 1: Pride Goeth...

I love the different POV here! I've never seen Boromir's leaving Rivendell written like that before.

Author's reply

Thank you Sarah! I had never seen it either, and it had always bothered me, so I decided to write it myself : ) I am so glad that you enjoyed my story!

Sam · 15 June 2006 · Chapter 1: Pride Goeth...

Yay, an understanding Boromir story! I really love stories that show Boromir's good side. I really enjoyed the part "They have hearts bigger than their stature". That is so true. I'm so glad you wrote this story, it's always a treat to read a Marigold Story :)

Author's reply

Thank you Sam! I am so glad that you like the story! Since seeing Boromir in the film I like him a lot better than I did before. Hobbits have the biggest hearts of all I think! : ) I hope that you will always think it is a treat to read one of my stories! I'll do my best to make it so!

Awww just lovely! Really nice Boromir pov there. Love that guy really, he's a dear! And the hobbits' voices are beautifully differentiated as well. Great job, just had to tell you! ~~~{~@

This is so good for so many reasons it's impossible to list them all, but if I had to choose one reason it would be this: subtext. It is that thing which tells the deeper story, and often reveals the depth of a writers skill in understanding the craft. Everthing else is spot on, no doubt, from plot to characterization to denoument to story and character arc, yet still, it is the subtext which shines forth. I am reminded of the brushstrokes of an artist. This was simply splendid.

I have no reply to this other than "Wow" and "thank you"! What a wonderful and thoughtful review, and I feel quite speechless! Especially knowing how much you love Boromir, and Merry and Pippin. You are so sweet and kind, and I appreciate your words very, very much! Rhank you Pipkin!

Blossom · 15 June 2006 · Chapter 1: Pride Goeth...

What a lovely little story, you've captured the essence of the hobbits perfectly. I always thought Boromir was a bit silly sounding that horn in Rivendell, so good to see such a perfect story about it. Keep up the writing Marigold! But don't stop badgering the others or they'll never finish their stories :)

Author's reply

Thank you Blossom, I am so glad that you liked my story! Boromir was just too vain and silly, and I have always wondered what the hobbits thought about his showing off that way, just when they are supposed to be secretly leaving their safe haven and heading into danger. I hope to keep writing as much as I can! And don't worry, I won't ever stop poking and badgering everyone else into writing stories! It's my calling!

pipspebble · 14 June 2006 · Chapter 1: Pride Goeth...

Wonderful! I'd always thought that sounding of the horn rather pretentious and foolish. Glad to see your take on it.

Author's reply

Thank you Pips! I am glad that you agree with me! I can't think of many things sillier than what Boromir did : )

rabidsamfan · 14 June 2006 · Chapter 1: Pride Goeth...

*chuckle* Boromir deserved that! And I do love the hobbits teasing him at the end. Thank you!

Author's reply

Thank *you*! Boromir was pretty dense and self-centred there, silly man, lol! I am glad that you liked the hobbits too!

Dreamflower · 14 June 2006 · Chapter 1: Pride Goeth...

This is wonderful--I'd never wondered before what the reactions of the others must have been towards Boromir's gallant but foolhardy gesture! I love your Boromir voice, so dignified, and unselfconsciously proud, and yet--when he realizes what he's done, so humble and willing to admit his fault. This is the brother that Faramir can look up to with so much love and admiration in spite of his father's favoritism.

Author's reply

Thanks Dreamflower! Boromir blowing his horn just when they are trying to sneak away quietly into the darkness has always bothered me. I wonder what Gandalf thought...I can just imagine Film Gandalf rolling his eyes and shaking his head in disgust : ) I am glad that you liked the way Boromir came out in this. I see him just as you said, and I am *so* glad that came through in the story. And I see him as always willing to learn from his mistakes, as any good commander must be, and all things point to Boromir being a good commander.

SurgicalSteel · 14 June 2006 · Chapter 1: Pride Goeth...

Just lovely, Marigold! I liked how the hobbits turned things around on Boromir!

Author's reply

Thank you! The hobbits have a lot more common sense than men do about many things! I am so glad that you read and liked my story!

shirebound · 14 June 2006 · Chapter 1: Pride Goeth...

The depth of my blindness stuns me and I tell them so, and learn something else about this race so foreign to me. They have hearts much bigger than their stature. They forgive me immediately, the moment the words “My friends, I am so very sorry,” leave my lips and they can see that I understand at last what I have done. Pippin nearly has me over in an enthusiastic hug, and Merry claps my arm as firmly as any comrade in Gondor’s army. I find I am relieved most of all to be back in their good graces, as these two have become dear to me. I do love it when the Fellowship members learn new things about one another! This is an adorable and very perceptive little story.

Author's reply

Thank you Shirebound! I am really glad that you liked it!

SlightlyTookish · 14 June 2006 · Chapter 1: Pride Goeth...

*sigh* This is lovely, a wonderful presentation of Boromir. You captured him so well, and also the hobbits - I heard their voices clearly. And I love how the hobbits' moods change so quickly, from anger to teasing. Very wonderful work!

Author's reply

This is a very wonderful review! Thank you so much ST! I am so glad that you liked it!

maripo5a · 14 June 2006 · Chapter 1: Pride Goeth...

Oh Marigold, this is lovely! Fresh and clear, and it makes an excellent canon point as well. *applauds* Gorgeously done. The writing is also very Tolkienish and flowing.

Author's reply

Eee! Tolkienish! I tried very hard to make Boromir sound Tolkienish so I really appreciate you saying I managed it! I am so glad that you liked it Maripo5a, and I hope that you are hard at work on your own writing! : )

Lily · 14 June 2006 · Chapter 1: Pride Goeth...

fter some good-natured arguing over whether or not they should say “good night” or “good morning” *LOL* This is so typical for the hobbits! I liked this a lot. I don't usually read anything about Boromir but you really captured him well. And what an embarrassment for a bold warrior to be put into place by hobbits :)

Author's reply

Thank you Lily! I am so glad that you think that I captured Boromir well. And the hobbits! I appreciate your comments very much! : )

harrowcat · 14 June 2006 · Chapter 1: Pride Goeth...

Oh this is great Marigold. I always did think Boromir was a bit silly sounding that horn but Tolkien needed us to know he had it or the second sounding would not have been as effective. I have often wondered if Faramir heard that first winding as he did the second but probably not as it was not 'on the borders of Gondor'.

Author's reply

Thanks! His doing that has always bothered me...they are leaving under cover of darkness, trying to be stealthy and secret, and he announces their departure! Can you imagine if Pippin had done any such thing! They would have sent him home tied up in that sack : ) I agree that it was a good way for Tolkien to introduce the importance of Boromir's horn, and I also think that his blowing of it here really expanded on the image that we already had of him, from his behaviour at the council. Thank you for reviewing!
