Shield-maiden of Rohan · 27 April 2025 · Chapter 2: Shared Blessings

The last line got me. Sad and regretful.

Baggins Babe · 16 February 2007 · Chapter 3: For the Dwarves, Gimli

Ooops! If I was in Gloin's boots I'd be packing my belongings in a spotted hanky on a stick by now! I don't think Nandi is going to be impressed when she hears about this Quest - and her son's new friends! I have a very bad feeling about this........... I too would love to see the moment when Gimli does arrive home - with his new best friend in tow!

Author's reply

Yes, there's going to by all kinds of explaining being done in that household. Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment!

Baggins Babe · 16 February 2007 · Chapter 2: Shared Blessings

Dear Gimli, sharing his socks with the Man of Gondor. I'm sure Boromir was suitably grateful, not just to Gimli but also to the mother who packed them.

Author's reply

Poor Boromir! I'm sure he felt a twinge of sorrow and loneliness for the mother he lost so young. and what a tribute to Nandi, to have raised a son of such compassion and generosity.

Baggins Babe · 16 February 2007 · Chapter 1: Mama's Big Boy

I loved this - we tend to forget that even Gimli has a Mum somewhere, fretting and worrying. Bless her for putting in those extra socks - and the salted pork too. “Now, Nandi, don’t get your beard all knotted. *snert* Any man who can say that to his wife - and get away with it...........

Author's reply

Loving mothers are the same the world over, aren't they? Thanks for reading and commenting!

Sarah · 13 February 2007 · Chapter 3: For the Dwarves, Gimli

Just wanted to add that I love Gimli's mother and I'm also glad you showed that it was difficult for Gloin, too.

Author's reply

I don't envy poor Gloin at all, trying to explain exactly where Gimli went, and why, and with who... Thanks for taking the time to read and comment!

Sarah · 13 February 2007 · Chapter 3: For the Dwarves, Gimli

Wonderful! I think this is exactly how a mother would think. I feel so much for her!

Author's reply

Thank you for the kind words. Mothers are the same all over the world, aren't they?

Aranel · 13 February 2007 · Chapter 2: Shared Blessings

Lovely! I like how you write Gimli. And I feel for Boromir. I love the title. Blessings are best when shared. Great drabble!

Author's reply

Thank you so much! These three drabbles just popped into my head out of nowhere, but I enjoyed writing and sharing them.

Anonymous · 13 February 2007 · Chapter 1: Mama's Big Boy

Lovely and I think very much like a mother! I love the ending!

Author's reply

Mothers are all quite the same, aren't they? Glad you enjoyed this, and thank you for commenting!

Jay of Lasgalen · 13 February 2007 · Chapter 3: For the Dwarves, Gimli

These are great! I like them all - and can even see myself in the first one. It doesn't matter if your children are all grown up - you still fuss over them. Gimli offering to share his socks with Boromir was touching - whatever nurse/nanny/maid looked after Boromir and Faramir after their mother's death could never replace Finduilas. I wonder what Gimli's mother will say when he turns up safe and well after the quest with an elf in tow - and the Elvenking's son, no less!! Jay

Author's reply

It doesn't matter if your children are all grown up - you still fuss over them. Yes, indeed! This very conversation took place in my house, MANY times. whatever nurse/nanny/maid looked after Boromir and Faramir after their mother's death could never replace Finduilas. Are you familiar with Edoraslass's "Under My Wing" series, posted here? She writes Boromir and Faramir's Nanny, from the time Boromir was a newborn, until - well, for a very long time. Check them out - I think you'd enjoy them very much. And thanks so much for your thoughtful comments here.

Dís · 13 February 2007 · Chapter 2: Shared Blessings

It is quite clear that Boromir misses his mother, the shared socks is a token of the love both mothers feels for their children.

Author's reply

Something as small and mundane as thick, warm socks can certainly symbolize a great deal to a child (no matter what their age.) Poor Boromir, to be so affected! And wonderful Gimli, for understanding and making his generous offer!

Dís · 13 February 2007 · Chapter 1: Mama's Big Boy

Mothers are alike no matter what kindred they belong to. *giggles* Always a little extra for the journey.

Author's reply

*giggles with you* Yes, always a special little treat for their darling.

SlightlyTookish · 13 February 2007 · Chapter 3: For the Dwarves, Gimli

All three of these are wonderful. It's so nice (and very unique!) to see the perspective of Gimli's mother. I enjoyed these very much.

Author's reply

Thank you! She's not all that different from any other mother *g*. It's amusing to think of gruff Gimli as someone's darling little boy, though!

Larner · 12 February 2007 · Chapter 3: For the Dwarves, Gimli

Oops--Mom just realized her son is NOT necessarily in a safe situation, and all are likely to pay. Not a good position for a Dwarf father to be in, admitting he agreed to such a disposition for his son. As usual, Ann, a series of wonderful tales. Thanks so much!

Author's reply

Oh dear, it certainly didn't take Nandi long to put two and two together, and come up with "trouble". Thank you for your generous comments! I really enjoyed spending time with Gimli and his loving family.

Branwyn · 12 February 2007 · Chapter 3: For the Dwarves, Gimli

Yup, I think Gloin will be sleeping in the forge. Those other dwarves are quietly edging away to make their escape before all hell breaks loose. Wait til she hears the nature of the quest and the small size of the party. Another fine drabble! Thanks for sharing it.

Author's reply

Poor, poor Gloin! He has a lot of tough explaining to do. I'm glad you enjoyed these - I had much fun writing them. I haven't completely resolved my writer's block issues, but I'm feeling a bit more hopeful that I haven't lost all my words.

Branwyn · 12 February 2007 · Chapter 2: Shared Blessings

Squee! I knew you would manage to sneak Boromir in! many horrifying tales of, shall I say, overexuberant protectiveness One can only imagine. Especially with the first child. Despite the vast difference in height, I'll bet those socks fit Boromir's shapely feet because the dwarves probably have huge feet. Gimli's generous offer is right in character because he often acts against the stereotype of dwarves as greedy and secretive.

Author's reply

Squee! I knew you would manage to sneak Boromir in! Well, how would anybody know it was my story, without Boromir? I think these two gruff and burly warriors would have regarded each other at first with suspicion, then with growing respect and ultimately, affection. Sharing their meager supplies would just be a small part of the way they demonstrated the depth of their friendship without words. *tear*

Branwyn · 12 February 2007 · Chapter 1: Mama's Big Boy

I love the title! Proving that mothers are the same everywhere, especially where the youngest child is concerned. Poor Gimli is used to the fussing, no doubt. don’t get your beard all knotted I admit that I still can't deal with the women having beards, though people have shown me the references in canon. Gloin is so going to be in trouble...

Author's reply

I keep hearing Gimli's line, in John Rhys-Davies' voice: "Thhhrrree pairrrs, motherrrr, and the extra hood, toooo..." Hahahahaha! *wipes tears* Bearded women, of any kind, distress me somewhat, but I suppose it can't be helped. Glad you enjoyed this!

MithLuin · 12 February 2007 · Chapter 3: For the Dwarves, Gimli

Mothers would never see quests the same way a father would! LOL, very well done.

Author's reply

LOL! Fathers think: "Honor!Glory!" Mothers think: "Trouble!Danger!" Thanks for reading and commenting!

grumpy · 12 February 2007 · Chapter 3: For the Dwarves, Gimli

Gimli had a mother, of course he had a mother, and I love her. She made sure he had extra socks and a snack. Of course the moment her back is turned he goes off on some kind of quest, with a elf too.

Author's reply

That's what she gets for letting Dad watch him - off he goes! Thanks for reading and commenting!

Bodkin · 12 February 2007 · Chapter 3: For the Dwarves, Gimli

Ahh! I'll bet Gloin thought twice about going home with news of that particular honour on his lips! I love the idea of Gimli with a protective mother, providing him with extra socks and salt pork. (And Gimli's awareness of his own good fortune, when faced with Boromir's long past loss of his own mother.)

Author's reply

They're such a nice pair, Gimli and Boromir; really quite similar in terms of gruff exteriors concealing hearts of pure gold, aren't they? Thanks for heartwarming comments!

Lamiel · 11 February 2007 · Chapter 3: For the Dwarves, Gimli

Nice to see Gimli getting his fair share of the spotlight. Yes, even tough Dwarven warriors have mothers to worry about them. And just think, he'll journey places no Dwarf has seen in centuries, come through the War with hardly a scratch, best an Elf at Helm's Deep, and forge the greatest friendship between Elf and Dwarf since the time of Narvi and Celebrimbor. Well done for mama's baby boy. Personally I'd credit the socks.

Author's reply

Personally I'd credit the socks. Well, they do say, "If your feet aren't happy, the rest of you can't be happy", so maybe the socks did have a lot to do with those worldshaking events! Thanks for reading and commenting!

docmon · 11 February 2007 · Chapter 3: For the Dwarves, Gimli

Nicely done! Great interactions between the characters, brief though it is. What a nice gesture on Gimli's part, for Boromir. And I can just see the fierceness of the dwarven mother in those closing lines. Certainly not one to mess with! Just as I would imagine them. Well done! docmon

Author's reply

Thank you! These drabbles were written purely on a whim; I'm quite pleased to see how well they have resonated with readers. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Larner · 11 February 2007 · Chapter 2: Shared Blessings

Oh, how very sweet, being willing to share socks and the love of mothers!

Author's reply

I always imagine that these gruff warriors, once they overcame their initial mistrust, would find that they had much in common. I'm very glad you enjoyed reading these!

Larner · 11 February 2007 · Chapter 1: Mama's Big Boy

Mothers are mothers, aren't they? Love it!

Author's reply

And none of them are any different, in the ferocity of their love for their sons. Thanks for reading and commenting!

sheraiah · 11 February 2007 · Chapter 3: For the Dwarves, Gimli

It's so lovely to see good Gimli stories! I don't usually read drabbles, but I am so glad that I read these. I have a particular soft spot for the dwarf. More, please?

Author's reply

Thanks! I don't write Gimli often, but when I do I enjoy interacting with him very much, quite different from the Men of Gondor and Rohan that I usually write. There may be one more drabble coming along to go with this. I also have another story in which Gimli is a major protagonist: Too Few Words. Thank your for taking the time to read and comment!

meckinock · 11 February 2007 · Chapter 3: For the Dwarves, Gimli

I am really glad Gimli survives the quest, because I would not want to be the one to bring this woman bad news.

Author's reply

"And though she be but little, she is fierce." Poor Gloin had a LOT of explaining to do! Thanks for reading and commenting - I'm quite pleased and surprised to see such an enthusiatic response to three little drabbles.
