· Chapter 3: Will He Find My Grave?
His voice was muted and defeated. "Pippin? Are they going to bury me?"
"No, indeed!" Pippin took Merry's face in his hands and spoke quietly but firmly, "they are going to heal you, I promise!"
Awww! *sniff, sniff...sigh* I'm so glad you got this bit in there. It compliments everything else you have so far. :-)
Éomer, ignoring the faint protests of Trwystan and Gwirion, gently scooped Merry up into his arms, cradling his head against his mighty chest. "Be at peace Rider of Rohan," he spoke firmly to Merry's incoherent murmurings, "Lord Aragorn is within and he has brought succour to my sister, just as he will to you."
I was so waiting for this scene! The image of Éomer carefully taking beloved Merry into his arms was beautiful...just beautiful. Merry's own despair is heart-wrenching - and poor Pippin is so worried about him.
Brilliant story! There *has* to be more coming...right?

Thanks Pippinfan,
I was waiting for this scene too - that's why it just had to be written!
Thanks for reviewing. More is on the way!

PJ should be taking lessons from you. :-) You have taken this part of the movie to a whole new level with Éowyn's despair more intense and clearer than in the movie, and poor Merry all but forgotten by the Men. I'm eager to watch Merry be 'borne in honour into the city'.

Hi Pf
Well poor old PJ had a lot to fit in and I suppose it's hard to get all that across in a film. But I must say I thought he could have made a *bit* more of poor Merry!
Thanks for reviewing.

Pippin smiled down, "Yes Merry, the haymaking is all finished and we have to get home." At least Merry's mind seemed to be wandering in happier fields now. "Tea will be ready and it's a long way across the lower pasture."
Ah, yes - I remember this beautiful gem. This is another of my favourite lines; it puts it all on par with Frodo in Sam's arms on Mt. Doom in the movie! I dearly love this!

Haymaking is a cherished childhood memory of my own - as is tea! So not surprising that it crept in here. And you're right, it is very much like Sam's reminisences.
Glad you liked it!
Just wanted to review this again. I found the way Pippin answered Merry's questions, even though Merry was disoriented, to be very caring. Pippin didn't insist on any one reality for Merry but reassured him within the thoughts that seemed real to Merry at that time. Pippin's love for Merry is so evident in this. Beautiful!
Author's reply
No one understands Merry quite like Pippin does.
Thanks for re-reviewing! Always a boost to get nice feedback.

Thank heavens for Eomer! I was not certain what Pippin was going to do. Those first two were really no help at all save to get Merry down from Shadowfax. In fact, they seemed more concerned about Shadowfax than about Merry. I love the intelligence of Shadowfax. He is such a lovely character in his own right. Beautifully done and now Eomer and Pippin will be able to see to it that Merry gets proper attention.

Hi GW,
To be honest, private joke between me and me and any Welsh speakers who happen to be reading, Trwystan and Gwirion's names are Welsh for "awkward" and "silly". Oh except Trwystan has an extra "y", it should be "trwstan".
Shadowfax really does know his business, doesn't he!
Thanks for reviewing, more soon.

I like Aragorn's calm acceptance that Merry is indeed alive based on Gandalf's actions alone. It shows how very much he trusts Gandalf. Later he shows his faith in Merry when he cautions, ("Do not underestimate the fortitude of the halflings," Aragorn assured both brother and sister, "the entire fate of Middle-earth now rests with two such halflings. If we were to lose faith in Frodo and Sam, then all is lost.) He knows that Merry is not to be under-valued. I do hope there is more soon. I am anxious for Merry to arrive at the Houses of Healing.

Hi GW
Nor should any of us ever underestimate a hobbit! Only at our peril!
I mean, look what they've done to our lives! Yes, I used to have a life, but it's getting hard to remember.
Thanks for reviewing,
