SurgicalSteel · 29 August 2007 · Chapter 8: Lake Evendim

*happy sigh* I love this - the imagery of Elladan singing to greet the dawn, and sunrise over a large lake, the stars reflected in the lake - it's just gorgeous. And the gentle teasing between Aragorn and Frodo is charming as always.

Author's reply

Thank you. This chapter made me feel very peaceful.

WhitewolfofDarkness · 23 August 2007 · Chapter 7: The Bounds

awww! I still can't wait to whats next our hobbit and his little dog too!

Author's reply

I can't wait to see what's next, too! Thanks, Whitewolf.

grumpy · 20 August 2007 · Chapter 7: The Bounds

Love the vision Elladan had of Estel and his children, superimposed over Aragorn and Frodo. Things to come. Nice to see that Aragorn is a worried about Frodo's first trip, as the twins were at Estel's first time.

Author's reply

Thanks, Grumpy. I like finding similarities between people and events, especially if it involves Frodo. :)

harrowcat · 20 August 2007 · Chapter 7: The Bounds

Loved every word as usual Shirebound! Good of Aragorn tobesoconcerned for Frodo's emotional health and great to put it in perspective with his own first foray into the wider world. Frodo couldn't have better guardians for his first steps. And the foresight vision! Wow!!!!!

Author's reply

Aragorn isn't *always* sure of himself, and I can imagine that escorting a hobbit OUT of the Shire would be more than a little out of his own comfort zone. It's interesting to explore little moments like that. Glad you're enjoying! :)

lbilover · 16 August 2007 · Chapter 7: The Bounds

Eek, I am a little late in reading and commenting on yet another wonderful chapter. So many things to love here: Aragorn's worry at taking Frodo outside the Shire, Elladan's foresight and understanding that Frodo is a very remarkable hobbit, the tug-of-war with Scamp (awwwww!!!), and Frodo's increasing ease with Elladan. I hope the next chapter isn't far off!!

Author's reply

Every parent needs to pack their child's (or pet's) favorite toys for a trip, and Frodo is no exception! I just knew that rag-rope had to make an appearance sometime. I'm so glad you're enjoying this. I certainly hope to have time soon to work out the details of chapter 8. :)

Antane · 16 August 2007 · Chapter 7: The Bounds

I know I must have said it before - but love sweet, lovely, innocent, happy Frodo! It's so nice just to see him that way before he had to embrace what he was created for, though of course I love him then too!:) Namarie, God bless, Antane

Author's reply

Thank you, Antane. Wherever we can ease Frodo's path, and bring him happiness, friendship, and love, it's such a joy to do so.

Glory Underhill · 15 August 2007 · Chapter 7: The Bounds

This is such a beautiful, warm, and exciting adventure that I can hardly say what I love most about it. When it's all done, I will certainly be going back to read it all again!

Author's reply

Oh Glory, thank you so much! What a lovely thing to say.

Linda Hoyland · 15 August 2007 · Chapter 7: The Bounds

Another truly delightful chapter. I loved Aragorn's concern for Frodo here and their playfulness together.

Author's reply

Thank you, Linda. Visiting with hobbits is always good for Aragorn's spirit.

Cuthalion · 15 August 2007 · Chapter 7: The Bounds

How thrilling that you give us the chance to peer into Elladan's head - and his foresight makes me both, happy and sad. And this halfling... Yes, this halfling indeed... his fate interwoven with that of Aragorn, but not with the bright future that lies ahead of Isildur's heir. *small sigh* Beautiful.

Author's reply

I'm so glad you're enjoying this. With all the injury and weariness ahead for Frodo, writing this series of gentle, happy stories helps me to bear it.

Larner · 15 August 2007 · Chapter 7: The Bounds

Yes, human and elvish blood, and his own nieces and nephew. I so with Frodo, too, could have seen those children.

Author's reply

I like the idea from The Silmarillion (I believe) of the "master stone" palantir permanently housed on Tol Eressea; perhaps it was able to show Frodo quite a bit. (Or at least, it was a concept I played with in "Sing Me Home".)

Andrea · 15 August 2007 · Chapter 7: The Bounds

“Do you recall your first patrol? You did not know it, but Elrohir and I were uneasy about taking you beyond protected borders Great reply, Elladan! And wise! There will always be a certain day in the life of a young man (or hobbit, in this case) when you have to release him and let him explore his surroundings more freely! However, for a hobbit it is something very special when it comes to the outside world. That Elladan called Frodo "remarkable" is indeed - remarkable ;-) His vision showed him that the lives of Aragorn and Frodo will be interwoven in the future. He should never underestimate his own abilities. Last but not least, the little episodes with Scamp involved make this story even more lovable :) Thank you!

Author's reply

He should never underestimate his own abilities I love it when the Big Folk learn something about themselves because of their interactions with hobbits. I tried to weave that theme into the original story, "Quarantined", and it seems to have followed me ever since. I'm so glad you're enjoying this, and our wee pup! Writing and sharing these gentle adventures make me very happy. :)

EllyBaggins · 15 August 2007 · Chapter 7: The Bounds

Before they left, Bilbo had scribbled there only ‘Lake Evendim’ – tantalizing words holding a promise of what lay... outside - i love this line! Estel's concerns are a nice character touch, and Elladan talking about that first patrol adds an interesting bit of history to his life. i'm really enjoying this story so far :)

Author's reply

Thanks, Elly. It's fun to find little details to make the journey as real as possible.

aprilkat · 15 August 2007 · Chapter 7: The Bounds

The idea of this very special hobbit stepping "off the map" with his human and elf companions is wonderfully presented. And the way Elladan's foresight evidences itself has such resonance and deepens everything.

Author's reply

Thank you, Aprilkat. I was taken by the passage in FOTR that Shire maps in general just show white space beyond the borders.

Dreamflower · 15 August 2007 · Chapter 7: The Bounds

Such a lovely and gentle adventure they are having so far, and yet I can easily understand Estel's trepidation about taking Frodo out of the Shire. And I am loving your Elladan more and more. I know you don't write Elves often, but I think some people who do would be very approving of your interpretation of him: he's solid and reliable, yet at the same time there is something very ethereal and fey about him as well. His flash of insight near the end of the story was perfect--exactly right, without being overdone. (By the way, the little conversation about Bandobras was amusing. It made me remember a fic I recently read, in which Elladan and Elrohir were actually *witnesses* to the Battle of Greenfields, and have to relay an account of it to their father. It's by Dagdad, called "More Than Meets the Eye", in case you haven't come across it--quite funny, and it really gives hobbits their due! http://www.henneth-annun.net/stories/chapter_view.cfm?stid=6698&SPOrdinal=1)

Author's reply

I really appreciate what you say about how I'm writing Elladan. You're right, Elves don't come that easily for me. Thank you for the story link!

Gentle Hobbit · 15 August 2007 · Chapter 7: The Bounds

This vision of Elladan's was interesting. I wonder what it was that made him think that Aragorn's future was interwoven with that of Frodo's: just the fact that the vision happened with Frodo in one part? Or was there some other quality about the second image that you haven't revealed to us yet? I'd like to fall asleep around a campfire, someday, after listening to ancient stories told by Aragorn. Frodo is a lucky lad.

Author's reply

Yes, I think the fact that he saw that vision overlapped with Frodo gave Elladan the insight that Aragorn and Frodo are linked in the present *and* the future. I'd love to camp out with these three, or with my hobbity friends! What bliss.

SurgicalSteel · 15 August 2007 · Chapter 7: The Bounds

This is just lovely. Aragorn's sudden realization that he's taking Frodo outside of 'safe territory,' Elladan realizing that hobbits have battled Orcs in their own lands before. Elladan calling Frodo 'remarkable' - I think he feels that Aragorn's rather remarkable, too. And the glimpse of the future - just lovely. And - I think it's actually somewhere in 'Unfinished Tales' that the elves who knew both felt that Aragorn bore a stronger resemblance to Elendil than any of his other descendants. Very, very nicely done, Frodo dreaming of Elendil. Can you tell I liked this? :)

Author's reply

Yay, thank you. (And... thank you for clarifying for me the relationship between Bandobras and Gerontius.) Frodo's dreams are such a fascinating touch by the Professor. I like to weave in that unique ability whenever I can.

Lily · 15 August 2007 · Chapter 7: The Bounds

*grins* So much comfort and peace, and still a little piece of the mind can't help but worry. I love the little glimpse of the future.

Author's reply

"Comfort and peace" sums up this story very well. Thank you, Lily.

Cuthalion · 7 August 2007 · Chapter 6: A Glimpse of Distant Lands

My dear, this is beyond beautiful. Now I'll spend the day longing for that song you described so poetically, and the last sentence wll make me smile whenever I think of it. Thank you so very much for the sweetness and comfort of your writing, always. *hugs you, just because* Mona

Author's reply

*wriggles happily in Mona's hug* I seem to have an insatiable need to make my hobbity world 'sweet and comforting', so I do thank you very much for such lovely words.

grumpy · 6 August 2007 · Chapter 6: A Glimpse of Distant Lands

Elladan is a great brother to Estel, I love the way they treat each other, also Elladan talking to the tree. Wouldn't want any limbs falling on them overnight.

Author's reply

I'm really enjoying writing this journey, and imagining what might happen along the way. If Dorothy had asked permission of the trees in Oz to take some apples, maybe they wouldn't have become so upset!

Mysterious Jedi · 6 August 2007 · Chapter 6: A Glimpse of Distant Lands

Just as sweet as all your stories. Keep up the good work. Will we be seeing Elrohir in this story?

Author's reply

Thank you very much. No, there will only be one Elf in this story. :)

harrowcat · 4 August 2007 · Chapter 6: A Glimpse of Distant Lands

Hmm! It was worth being out of internet range to come back to such a lovely chapter.

Author's reply

What a lovely thing to say. :)

Andrea · 2 August 2007 · Chapter 6: A Glimpse of Distant Lands

Frodo sat transfixed, as spellbound as the rest. Elladan’s voice was unlike anything he had heard before – almost as if more than one melody was coming from his throat, the notes liquid as a waterfall, as bright as the stars. He could almost see what Elladan was singing... Beautifully written, shirebound! I wished I could listen to an Elf singing! And I enjoyed Frodo's questions a great deal! They are very clever ones. Elladan and Elrohir have indeed the job of Rangers. Have I ever told you how much I like your Tolkien quote at the beginning of each chapter? Great job :)

Author's reply

Thank you, Andrea; don't we all wish we could hear that! And I appreciate you mentioning the quote. I started that awhile back, for some stories, to tie the more 'AU' tales in with canon... but I enjoyed doing it so much, now I preface nearly every chapter of my stories with some type of quote.

Idril Celebrindal · 2 August 2007 · Chapter 6: A Glimpse of Distant Lands

shirebound, Wonderful chapter, thoroughly enjoyed the inn scenes and the descriptions of Scamp's part of the adventure. Idril

Author's reply

Thank you so much, Idril! :)

Baggins Babe · 2 August 2007 · Chapter 6: A Glimpse of Distant Lands

Ooooh! This made my day! How lovely to find this chapter this morning. I loved all of it, particularly Elladan singing, the love between him and Estel and Frodo being responsible (and being praised for it). I giggled at his question to Estel - "Do you get paid for Rangering?" *snert* All this and Scamp too! *happy sigh*

Author's reply

Your happiness makes *me* happy, BB. Frodo's come a long way from the uncertain child in "Quarantined", but continues to bloom when given words of praise and loving friendships -- as do most of us.

Jane · 1 August 2007 · Chapter 6: A Glimpse of Distant Lands

But an Elf, now, here was a rare sight. Lamps had been lit in the common room, and the hearth crackled with bright flame, but he would swear this Elf carried his own light with him, a strange radiance that you could almost see if you didn’t quite look at him... Wow, what a great description! It would be lovely to see an Elf. *sighs dreamily* I've seen Elladan and Elrohir in a rather long and pleasant dream...I'll never forget that dream! *sighs once more* Elladan’s voice was unlike anything he had heard before – almost as if more than one melody was coming from his throat, the notes liquid as a waterfall, as bright as the stars. He could almost see what Elladan was singing... Oh, how beautiful. I would absolutely LOVE to hear him sing. I can just imagine it... The conversation with the tree was intreging (sp?) too. And I love the brotherly love between Elladan and Aragorn! P.S: Are we going to meet Elrohir? Just wondering.

Author's reply

Thank you, Jane. My, what lovely dreams you have! Maybe the twins will sing to you some night. I don't believe Elrohir will be making an appearance in this fic, but both twins play a major role in "Mind to Mind", if you wish to check out that story.
