What a funny story! Only Pippin would find himself in this situation. Not only would he gladly eat all the cake given to him (at first), but he would be too polite to hurt anybody's feelings by refusing the cake once he became too uncomfortable! That's our Pip!

Author's reply

At first I was going to write this as Pippin just over-doing it because he could but then I decided that this was better since he is all grown up now. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Katherine-The-Crowned · 28 September 2007 · Chapter 1: Let Him Eat Cake

I love it. Hilarious! I especially loved Merry's little side comments. "No, you threw up on my foot and now you must suffer." Wonderful job!

Author's reply

Thanks so much. I am very glad that you enjoyed it. It's something that could probably only happen to Pip!

Periantari · 29 July 2007 · Chapter 1: Let Him Eat Cake

hilarious as usual! that was soooo funny! what a clever idea that was... I love your dialogue and your humor is always on the spot funny! Poor Pippin with the cake.. and you would think he would get sick from drinking nto sick from eating too much cake! lol... so funny he keeps on trying to eat more for the sake of Diamond. And so cool that Merry's with him at the end to be there for him when he gets sick. Poor Pippin! ¡°Merry, tell them I got drunk. Tell them you knocked me out. Tell them I left town,¡± Pippin said. ¡°But don¡¯t tell anyone that I ate too much cake. Please?¡± LOL! yes, mightly embarassing to be sick from too much cake. lol! Thanks for a wonderful laugh, GW! ♥

Author's reply

I got the idea from a story that Dreamflower wrote and she allowed me to use the little plot bunny to write this one. I could so see this happening to Pippin! I'm glad it made you laugh. Thank you for stopping by to read. Are you still in China? If so then I hope you are having a great time!

Lindelea · 20 July 2007 · Chapter 1: Let Him Eat Cake

Your hobbits are so very hobbity! Bless Pippin for his heroic effort. Do you think he'll want birthday cake next year, or will he perhaps beg for brambleberry tart? *g*

Author's reply

I think tarts might be a very nice change for Pippin after this. LOL Thank you for stopping by to read and review. I know how very busy you keep.

harrowcat · 19 July 2007 · Chapter 1: Let Him Eat Cake

Aw Pippin! You managed to make me feel ill too and I can eat cake for England! But when a lad is feeling sick then Mum is best, however old you are!

Author's reply

Hey, I knew sooner or later I'd write something that would make people sick! I guess this was it. LOL Thanks for reading and if you ever do get a chance to eat cake for England, let me know. I wanna see that!

Elemmírë · 6 July 2007 · Chapter 1: Let Him Eat Cake

ROTFL!!!!! Poor Pippin! He's really done it to himself this time! I absolutely adored the ending with Pippin and Eglantine! *sighs happily* “You may be all grown up now and be a Knight and live all the way out at Crickhollow away from your family and be in love but now and again a lad needs his mum.” “I asked Merry to go and get you,” Pippin said softly as he drifted off to sleep A son is never too old to need his mother. ~Elemmírë~ p.s. So does Saradoc continue his new tradition with his nephew on future birthdays, or does Pippin somehow get out of partaking in it after this latest mishap with cake? LOL!

Author's reply

As the mother of a grown son I do agree that they are NEVER too old to need their mother now and again. I imagine that is true for daughters as well. : ) As to Saradoc and his tradition, well, I am guessing that the memory of this birthday and the cake incident will have faded a bit by then. I can't imagine a Hobbit giving up cake, can you? LOL Thank you for reading and I'm very glad that you enjoyed it!

peri an · 3 July 2007 · Chapter 0: The reason for this story

Your disclaimer cracked me up. :D

Author's reply

Since everyone knows that these are all Tolkien's characters I do like to have fun with the disclaimer. Thank you and I'm very glad it gave you a laugh.

Golden · 2 July 2007 · Chapter 1: Let Him Eat Cake

Ohh...poor Pip! It really feels like dying ( well like I assume dying might feel, cause I have not died yet) to have something like this. And Merry is a great friend. But I had to laugh imagine his face, when Pip throws up on his foot. *L* Poor Merry as well. Also one really never is too old to have ones Mama beside the bed, when one feels terribel. Very sweet scene! :) P.S. *looks at breakfast* But somehow I am now not hungry anymore.

Author's reply

LOL So sorry that I made you lose your apatite with this one. I may have gone a bit over board with the cake. Thank you so much for reviewing and I hope you did get breakfast at some point in time!

PIppinfan1988 · 1 July 2007 · Chapter 1: Let Him Eat Cake

“Mum?” “Yes, darling?” “Next year on my birthday I don’t want any cake,” Pippin said. LOL Oy, oy, oy! Now *that* was priceless! :-) I think by the time Merry met up with the poor birthday lad out in the garden, I was ready to get sick right along with him. I thought this was hilarious and the ending as sweet as the cake. ;-) PF

Author's reply

I'm glad you liked it. I could just see Pippin winding up doing something different for his coming of age than the usual getting pleasantly drunk bit. Dreamflower's bunny was lots of fun to write and it was finished in time for her birthday. Thank you for the sweet review!

PIppinfan1988 · 1 July 2007 · Chapter 0: The reason for this story

LOL! I remember that scene and I'm glad somebody's running with it! I'm eager to read the results. :-D And a happy birthday to Dreamflower! PF

Author's reply

When I frist read it I nudge the bunny to Dreamflower who said that it didn't fit in her universe at this time and so I asked her permission to take the bunny home and see what might happen and this story is the result.

Antane · 1 July 2007 · Chapter 1: Let Him Eat Cake

Cute! Oh, poor Pippin, first afraid everyone was going to take his cake before he could really enjoy it and then over-indulging and being hopeful there wouldn't be celebrations when he got older. And who says Frodo wasn't there in some way? Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author's reply

Yes, Pippin had a rather rough night of it didn't he? I do like to think that Frodo was watching it all from somewhere. That makes me happy. Thank you for reviewing!

Pearl Took · 1 July 2007 · Chapter 1: Let Him Eat Cake

Fantastic, as always, dear GW. Funny and sweet all in one. You're so very good at these wonderful stories. “I was pretending that I didn’t need anyone here,” Pippin said. “I thought it was the adult thing for me to do. Do you mind staying?” “Of course not,” Eglantine said looking pleased to be asked. “You may be all grown up now and be a Knight and live all the way out at Crickhollow away from your family and be in love but now and again a lad needs his mum.” “I asked Merry to go and get you,” Pippin said softly as he drifted off to sleep." That is so very true! Especially when the lad is sick, hehehe. Mewd - as always!

Author's reply

Thank you! Dreamflower's plot bunny was fun to write and I am very glad that she gave me permission to give this one a go. This is one of those mother and son moments and as the mother of a son I am certain that you know all about this sort of thing. : ) Oh and thank you for the Mewd! Now that I know what it means I am very pleased to have you post it! Thank you! LOL

Larner · 1 July 2007 · Chapter 1: Let Him Eat Cake

Too much cake even for poor Pippin? And Diamond helping load him up on it? Oh, how wonderful! Poor, poor lad! Now--he can pretend to be just a lad and have his mum hold his hand and love him as mum's do, and relax--and by the end of the week he'll be loving cake once more! I suspect his mother's right on that count! Thanks for the laughs.

Author's reply

So glad you enjoyed this one. I thought it was a bit different then allowing Pippin to get drunk with Merry for his coming of age. And I could see this happening to Pippin. Thank you for reviewing. As to Eglantine, I think this let her know that her youngest would always need her. : )

Larner · 1 July 2007 · Chapter 0: The reason for this story

A wonderful tribute to another lovely writer. Now, to enjoy the humor!

Author's reply

Sometimes you just read something in someone else's story and it set you on an idea and this was one of those times. It worked out perfectly as a birthday surprise and since the subject is cake that works all the more. LOL

Garnet Took · 1 July 2007 · Chapter 1: Let Him Eat Cake

This is such a sweet story, and I mean that in all it's meanings.:) I knew fairly early on that poor Pippin was in trouble, but it was interesting to see how his difficulty unfolded. I felt so sorry for him when Merry found him. I'm glad, though, that it was Merry and not some other well-meaning relative offering him more cake. The last bit with Pippin and his mum was so loving. Just what a young adult needs most, his mum to be close when needed, but willing to let him be as grown up as he wants to be. Great job GW.

Author's reply

It was pretty clear where this one was going, wasn't it? LOL When I read Dreamflower's story I thought it would be funny if rather than getting drunk from drinking the toasts to his health at his coming of age party if Pippin just ate too much cake like a much younger hobbit might have done. I didn't want it to be for childish reasons so I had to give him an adult reason to over-indulge, not wanting to hurt anyone's feelings. Thank you for reading and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Baggins Babe · 1 July 2007 · Chapter 1: Let Him Eat Cake

Oh dear, poor Pip! Even the legendary Peregrin Took's appetite for cake has been defeated! And how typical of Merry to go out and tell the assembled guests that Pip is drunk rather than beaten by cake. At least Diamond won't have to be offended. A lovely story and so typical of our Pip.

Author's reply

Yes leave it to Merry to cover up things well. He has had a bit of experience so he should make a fine show of it. As to Pippin's appetite for cake, well I guess everyone, even Pippin has a limit! LOL

Lindelea · 1 July 2007 · Chapter 0: The reason for this story

Hurrah, another GW prologue for me to comment on! And here it is, July, and starting on the morrow I shall have the luxury of a whole hour or two of daily reading time! Hurrah for summer! Hurrah for Pippin! Hurrah for Dreamflower! Hurrah for birthdays! Hurrah for GW!

Author's reply

And Hurrah for Lindelea for reviewing the prologue so it won't feel left out! Enjoy your summer!

elanor winterflowers · 1 July 2007 · Chapter 1: Let Him Eat Cake

Oh, I liked this! And I wonder if anybody will ever believe that Pippin ate all that cake just to make other people happy. Well, I think he's going to make a lovely a grown-up and I hope his mama's potion works quickly! Happy Birthday to Dreamflower!

Author's reply

Thank you. Pippin might have trouble making anyone believe that he was only eating some of that cake for the sake of others. LOL And I am certain that Eglantine might have believed it. Glad you liked this one!

shirebound · 1 July 2007 · Chapter 1: Let Him Eat Cake

This is a darling story, and what a wonderful gift for Dreamflower. Pippin certainly is learning "Watch out what you wish for, you might get it!" But I especially loved this... did enjoy the cake. The truth was he enjoyed making her happy far more than he enjoyed the cake. That was a bit troubling Awwww.

Author's reply

Thank you. I suspect that any time a hobbit thinks of anything or anyone before they think of food then it's a sign of something important. LOL

SlightlyTookish · 1 July 2007 · Chapter 1: Let Him Eat Cake

LOL! This is very funny and sweet. I especially liked the bit where Merry says that in his mind, Pippin will never be older than ten years old. And the last bit with Pippin and Eglantine was just adorable!

Author's reply

Merry's line comes from something that happens to me. I seem to have trouble realizing that younger family members are all grown up at times. I have an age for them and for some reason when I think of them they are always at that age when I picture them in my mind. LOL Glad you enjoyed this and I do hope that you have a bit of time to write more yourself soon. I miss your lovely tales!

harrowcat · 1 July 2007 · Chapter 1: Let Him Eat Cake

Aw that last bit was so sweet! And I gave up trying to count....

Author's reply

Thank you for the review and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Dreamflower · 1 July 2007 · Chapter 1: Let Him Eat Cake

Oh, GW, this was adorable!! I do love the fact that Pippin was *planning* to not really eat all that cake, but he just couldn't stand to hurt anyone's feelings! That's such a Pippish thing to do. And Merry was perfect in this, figuring out what had happened, and giving Pippin a good excuse to be sick, and teasing him just enough to get his mind off his misery, but not enough to really upset him! And I am quite sure that somewhere on Tol Eressea, Frodo and Bilbo were looking in a palantir, and chuckling over Pippin's birthday, and drinking his health. *grin* I love it very much, and it's a lovely birthday present! *here's a big hug!*

Author's reply

Awww, thank you for the big hug and thank you for sparking the idea that resulted in this story. I do hope that you had a lovely birthday. I didn't want Merry to actually admit that he would NEVER tell any of this because I can imagine him telling it to Pippin's children at some future date when they've had too much cake. I did think that Merry could be trusted to keep quiet about it for a few years though. LOL As to Bilbo and Frodo, that is one of the many reasons I enjoy your story that inspired this; Frodo has a future among the hobbits in it! : )
