What a great story! The last part, with Arwen and Eowyn wondering why no one is drinking, is very funny; as is Legolas' wry line about the bowl being big enough for a hobbit to bathe in! And nice characterisation of Faramir, who is Steward of Gondor now but will wait for his turn in the public bathing chamber just like any soldier. Loved it.

Thank you! When Marigold mentioned the idea this was just what came from it. We were looking at the Royal Punch Bowl at that point and discussing Hobbits, of course. LOL I've always loved Faramir but I haven't written much for him. I think of him as being the sort who would lead by example and to that end, would not want special treatment. I also think he would be trying to do what he believed Boromir might have done. I'm so glad you enjoyed that part of it. Thank you.

Reminds me of bathing my son, when he was a baby, in the kitchen sink at my Mum's house, many, many years ago! Lynda

Author's reply

That's sweet. I didn't think about that comparison but it totally works here. Thanks for reading!

pippinsgirl · 26 April 2008 · Chapter 1: The Ernil i Pheriannath Takes a Bath

I LOVE this. it's so funny! I can't believe that Pip would think..... wait I can believe that he would think he is dreaming the entire time

Author's reply

Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I could see Pippin being so tired and so confused by the 'royal treatment' that he just assumed it *had* to be a dream. It was, after all, too good to be true. Thank you for reading!

GamgeeFest · 23 November 2007 · Chapter 1: The Ernil i Pheriannath Takes a Bath

“It’s a punch bowl. It’s part of the royal set. There is a ladle.” Faramir was still rather pale. Hehehe. Pippin always seems to find himself in the middle of embarrassing situations. I loved that he was convinced it was just a dream, until Merry and Frodo dunk him. How dare they treat royalty that way! The ending was priceless. Arwen and Éowyn will have a fit of hysterics once their husbands explain why no one was drinking the punch. :)

Author's reply

Glad you liked it. Seeing that punch bowl in person and getting this little plot bunny from Marigold just set me to writing at once! I could just see Pippin bathing in the punch bowl.

Bodkin · 10 November 2007 · Chapter 1: The Ernil i Pheriannath Takes a Bath

I hope the woman who provided the special bath didn't get into any trouble! And, really, Estel! After half a lifetime as a Ranger, eating dirt and wallowing in mud, I'm sure that you shouldn't reject the punch made in the well-washed golden receptacle! You've probably consumed far worse.

Author's reply

Since she was just trying to make one of the Fellowship a bit more comfortable I doubt that she got into trouble and you are right about Aragron. He really should have gone ahead and braved the punch. LOL

Mysterious Jedi · 4 November 2007 · Chapter 1: The Ernil i Pheriannath Takes a Bath

Funny and well written. Nice work.

Author's reply

Thank you! I owe this one to Marigold who gave me the idea and took me to see the Crown Jewels which include a certain punch bowl! Thanks for reading!

Envinyatar · 3 November 2007 · Chapter 1: The Ernil i Pheriannath Takes a Bath

I'm wondering if this is the punch bowl: Royal punch bowl

Author's reply

That's it! I don't know how you did it but thank you for finding it. I'll put a link to it at the end of the story. I do think it's more effective if folks can see it. Thanks so much for finding it!

Lindelea · 2 November 2007 · Chapter 0: What have we here?

You do write the best Prologues of anybody I know.

Author's reply

Maybe I could get a job writing disclaimers for real authors! Wonder what a thing like that would pay? LOL I am so glad you like them. You are one of the folks that I keep writing them for since you always read the prologues and comment. Besides, it had now become a challenge to see if I can top the last one.

elanor winterflowers · 2 November 2007 · Chapter 1: The Ernil i Pheriannath Takes a Bath

Well, THAT was just splendid! I loved it! I especially loved the moment when Faramir said, "There's a ladle." That was superb! I'm still giggling.... And I bet at some point the Thain DID get a "royal" bathtub for the Smials. :)

Author's reply

Poor Faramir! He was a bit stunned by the use of a family treasure in such a matter. When Marigold gave me the idea I was thrilled with it. It is so very Pippin! I can see Pip getting himself a royal bath! LOL

TopazTook · 2 November 2007 · Chapter 1: The Ernil i Pheriannath Takes a Bath

This is hilarious! I knew it was something from the kitchens, but I didn't figure out it was the punch bowl until someone said. That ladle probably would have been handy if someone had been helping him with the bath: much easier to pour rinse water that way!

Author's reply

You should have seen the 'real' royal punch bowl! That thing is huge and it really is big enough to bath a small hobbit in! Now, I will confess that I did not see a ladle but I am just thinking that it had to have one! How else could you get the punch out? LOL

Mum's the Word · 2 November 2007 · Chapter 1: The Ernil i Pheriannath Takes a Bath

What fun! That must have been some big punch bowl! But what a lovely dream Pippin had! (Poor Seth...) Lovely and fun, as always, Grey Wonderer! *hugs and brownies*

Author's reply

The royal punch bowl is huge! It is a wonder they can use it for anything. I am told that it weighs about a ton and is solid gold. In any case, it is lovely. When Marigold gave me this plot bunny I was thrilled with it. Glad you enjoyed it and thank you again for those delicious brownies!

Mum's the Word · 2 November 2007 · Chapter 0: What have we here?

I just love your prologues! The "ahem" at the beginning of the story, I think A.A. Milne called a prologue. Yours are too much fun to miss, so those prologue non-readers don't know what a good time they've not had. *hugs you* *leaves you brownies* *hurries on to read the story*

Author's reply

A A Milne was right I think. Most folks want the story, not the 'story of why I wrote the story or the disclaimer.' I like trying to see how strange I can make the disclaimer and still make it work as an actual disclaimer. Thanks for the brownies and I do hope you enjoy the story!

Andrea · 2 November 2007 · Chapter 1: The Ernil i Pheriannath Takes a Bath

LOL!!! That was wonderful! I especially liked the lad who was standing guard! Poor boy, there he gets the chance to speak to the Ringbearer, but has to speak "around" the main subject. “When did you see him last?” Merry asked, knowing a near lie when he heard one. He’d told enough of this sort to be able to know one when he heard it. Haha! I can very well imagine that! I can't remember the golden punch bowl, but on my next trip to London I will most certainly have a look at it - and think of Pippin taking a bath :)

Author's reply

I do think that lots of folks were wanting a chance to speak to Frodo but afraid to do so. It was a shame that poor Seth's one chance at it resulted in having to explain about that mysterious bath! And I am guessing that Merry was quite talented at little white lies, don't you agree? LOL I really wanted to find a link to a photo of the punch bowl but was never able to find it. When I did a search for one all I kept getting were photos of crowns! Next trip look at it closely and see if you can imagine Pippin bathing in it!

Andrea · 2 November 2007 · Chapter 0: What have we here?

LOL!!! Your disclaimers are great, G.W.! So, now that Tolkien's characters safely found their way into your story, it's time to start reading it ;-)

Author's reply

Thanks for dropping by. Glad you enjoy these little odd disclaimers.

SurgicalSteel · 2 November 2007 · Chapter 1: The Ernil i Pheriannath Takes a Bath

That was absolutely hilarious. Just lovely!

Author's reply

That you! Marigold has some great story ideas!

Envinyatar · 2 November 2007 · Chapter 1: The Ernil i Pheriannath Takes a Bath

This was great fun to read. I particularly liked Faramir's reaction: "It has a ladle" made me giggle. Thanks for this.

Author's reply

Faramir must have been very shocked to see the royal punch bowl used in such a way. Someone else pointed out that the ladle would have been good for rinsing soap out of Pip's hair! That might have killed Faramir! Thank you for reading!

Larner · 2 November 2007 · Chapter 1: The Ernil i Pheriannath Takes a Bath

Nonsense! If they scalded the bowl afterwards it should be perfectly ready for its intended purpose! But the idea of Pippin bathing in it and the others ducking him under in that way is priceless--truly priceless! Wonderful! I have been giggling much of this chapter, even. Ah, it could ONLY happen to Pippin!

Author's reply

I think that since the bowl was solid gold that it really would have been very easy to clean it and see to it that no hobbit bath germs out into the punch! LOL Glad you got a giggle out of it. That dunking bit just 'had' to happen. I suspect that Merry and Frodo simply could not let that bit about the Thain needing a royal bath pass without some action being taken.

Larner · 2 November 2007 · Chapter 0: What have we here?

No, we wouldn't dream of blaming them for any misteaks. Even your prologues are a work of art, child! Hehehehe!

Author's reply

I hate writing the same disclaimer every time and so I've got to the point where I'm trying to make each of them a little different. It's fun. Glad you like them.
