You know... I really adore your writing. Years after leaving the 'fandom' I find myself back again and you are *still* the first fanfic author I recommend when asked about Tolkien-verse stories and the first one I go to when I want to read really engaging ones for my own enjoyment.
And then I open this one today and just like that, I'm sucked into your world again!
So now I'll skip off to immediately read my absolute favorites (the EI series) because this one brought back that full nostalgia... and even though it's YEARS later I'll quietly continue to hope that the muse inspires more Erestor. Because it's so very hard to find good Glorfindel and Erestor friendship stories and I'd love to see how all of Glorfindel's 'new' family take to Erestor!

Hello Laurelas. What a lovely review, especially after all this time. I may write some more Glorfindel/Erestor friendship stories in the future. You never know. Thanks for reading my stories. I appreciate you letting me know how much you enjoy them. And welcome back to the Tolkien fandom.

Hi, Fiondil, it's me again. I slipped back into rarely-reviewing mode, but ... well, it's the editor in me. Sorry.
"Finrod knew him to be a competent councillor and administrator to his friend Beren’s great-grandson, Elrond, who was also Finrod’s nephew-by-marriage as well as his first cousin twice removed."
Through Dior, Finrod and Elrond are *second* cousins twice removed (Eärwen and Lúthien being first cousins).
Also, through Nimloth, Finrod and Elrond are second cousins three times removed.
And through Celeborn, they are second cousins once removed by marriage.
Hope that's right. [I finally had to make separate charts for all the ways people are related to each other (especially Elrond), because otherwise I couldn't remember them all. I'm obviously not a hobbit.]
Bumped into this story on a search for something else; it's just as enjoyable the second time around.
Author's reply
Hi. I will have to recheck my own chart. I probably misread it and there are a couple of different ways to denote relationships between cousins and terminology is not always the same. Thanks for the heads-up, though. I am glad you found this just as enjoyable the second time around. Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate it very much.

Hello!
Loved the story! Poor Erestor always seemed to get shunned out, I am really happy he got a star role! :)
Aw, Erestor and Estel...Cuteness abounding. I hope the Muse directs you toward a more *specific* shot with stories about Estel being told to the elves in Valinor. ;)
As always, great job and looking forward to more!
Author's reply
Hi MP. I am glad you loved this story. Someday, the Muse willing, I may write more about Erestor and Estel. We´ll have to see.

Can we have some more Beginnings please? I would like to read the story of Sador's courtship and marriage! Do Erestor and the beautifull Lindorille have a future or is it just a dance floor romance!?
More please,
Lynda
Author's reply
At the moment I have no plans to expand on this story though that's not to say that it won't be at some point in the future. It all depends on the muse. As for Sador... we might see something of that in "Elf, Interrupted, Book Two" but again I make no firm promises. *grin*

One never thinks of Erestor as being other than one of Elronds advisors. This glimpse into his early life is fascinating, would he have ended up with Elrond if he had not met Glorfindel?
You would think Elves would be above that sort of thing, but prejudice is a pervasive part of the history of Middle Earth, those that went, looked down on those that stayed and those that made it over the mountins, looked down on those that did not!
Sad to say we are not much better today, no matter how much we try. Sometimes I think we try to hard.
Sorry this is bit off topic but some of your stories are very thought provoking!
Lynda
Author's reply
Hi Lynda. I'm glad you find this (and my other stories) thought provoking. It's one of my goals as a writer to get my readers thinking and re-evaluating old prejudices and seeing things in a different light than what they are used to.
Erestor is an interesting character whom I would like to write more about, perhaps even expand on this story some more at a later time. Thanks for reviewing.

Glad to see Erestor making some new friends as he awaits Glorfindel to join him. I loved your version of how those two met.
And Erestor mentions Estel; how sweet. Let's hope he got the chance to tell some stories of him.
Another wonderful tale from you. Thanks!
Author's reply
I'm sure Finrod, Arafinwë and Ingwë heard many tales from Erestor about Glorfindel and Estel. Glad you liked the story.

Ohhh, I love this. I'm just now rereading Elf Interrupted, so I knew immediately what Erestor was talking about when he talked of the incident Glorfindel told him about. I like your Erestor and hope you have more chapters of this story soon.
Author's reply
Thanks, obsidianj. At the moment this is just a one shot (originally a gift fic for a friend who's mad on Erestor *grin*) but you never know where the muse will take you and so perhaps someday I may continue this. I'm sure a number of readers would like to see if Erestor gets the elleth.

Beautiful, really beautiful. And you mentioned Estel! And Turgon and... I love it when there are hints and references to other stories - when I know them, of course. :o)
Author's reply
Thnaks, Hanci. I'm glad you liked this. I like dropping hints and references to other stories or in some way connect them as much as possible so that they are interconnected within my particular version of Middle-earth. Like Tolkien, I like to offer vistas of a deeper past than what we encounter on the surface, thus giving my stories (hopefully) more depth.

Not only Glorfindel, neither you have ever mentioned his family (the first one, not the adopted one).
It's wonderful to meet everyone again and to see them through Erestor's eyes.
Author's reply
Thanks Hanci... since Tolkien never specifically stated what Glorfindel's parentage was I've hesitated doing so myself. I am simply assuming that he is at least part-Vanyarin because of his golden-hair, but that's as much as I've been willing to go.

this is delightful! It's so interesting to see the side of Glorfy we know from LOTR juxtaposed with the Glorfy with the history from Elf Interrupted. Most enjoyable and I hope Erestor gets the girl.

Oh my goodness! I just love seeing how Erestor and Glorfindel became friends. Over an elleth! LOL! A pretty bad apple of one from the looks of things. Glad Erestor had Glory to help him in that regard.
Love the fact that Erestor is short. I forgot to mention that last chapter. I just find his insecurities over it so endearing and sweet. I want to hug him! *grin*
I'm glad Finrod was able to get those two dancing at the end.
Great story! I simply adore it!

I'm only 5'8" myself so I know how frustrating it is to have to look up at people. Even here in China there are plenty of people who are taller than I am, so making Erestor not as tall as the average elf just made him more endearing for me. *grin*
I think Erestor and Glorfindel proved very good for one another. Erestor became Glorfindel's first real friend in Lindon and Glorfindel helped Erestor to see himself as someone of worth and that his mixed heritage was more an asset than a curse.
Finrod as matchmaker... well, it just fit. *grin* I'm sure he's going to do all in his power, short of issuing an order, to faciliate a romance between those two 'youngsters'. LOL
Thanks for reviewing.

Thank you so much for writing this, my friend! I simply LOVE IT! Your version of a shy Erestor is just perfect and so endearing. And I loved seeing Finrod playing matchmaker. *grin* Love seeing characters we know from EI so far into the future. I was saddened to see that there is still some unresolved feelings on Ingwe's part. I hope one day the two of them will finally be able to put that behind them.
Great chapter! I just love this. I think it will be one of my favs of yours. *grin*

Thanks, NiRi. I'm happy you like the story. Erestor isn't someone I know very well, so I wasn't sure if I got him quite right. Maybe he'll be a little more forthcoming about himself and I may write more about him.
I'm sure when Glorfindel returns to Aman he and Ingwë will have the chance to work things out.

Quite a story, and now we know the history of the one for whom Aragorn's mother was named? Not perhaps the most propicious of omens.
And thanks for the translation for Nimmeril. I will have to remember that!
Author's reply
Actually, I made an error in that. The elleth's mame was always Nimmeril, but for some reason I had a memory lapse and threw in Gilraen's name instead. I thought I had made the change in all places. I'll have to go back and check. Glad you enjoyed the story. Thanks for reviewing.

· Chapter 2: Lindon
Goodness, meldonya, Erestor certainly has self-esteem problems doesn't he? I can just see him there behind the potted fern looking wistful. Too bad the object of his would be affections is such a... ahem... No I won't use such language on a public forum.
I did find it a bit funny that Erestor had seemed slightly affronted and surprised to find out that Lindorillë was the daughter of a baker in the previous chapter and then to see him agonising over the fact that he is the son of a guard and a kitchen maid in this one. Of course, it's amazing what several millenia's experience will do to your reactions to things, isn't it?
Glorfindel was wonderful here. Well, he's wonderful all the time in my opinion but here he's at his best, lending an ear, giving advice and helping out someone who's having a hard time. I'm sure that he noticed the parallels in the way Erestor feels about being Pervoredhel admist Gil-galad's court and the way he felt being not only Reborn but an exilic Noldor in Aman.
Of course, Erestor needs to learn (at this point in time at least) to watch what he's saying and not let his feelings run away with his tongue. If someone other than Glorfindel had heard him say that Gil-galad only knew or cared about him because Erestor's father had saved his life, it could have caused him a lot of trouble.
Good for Glorfindel for jumping on Erestor's self-denigration. And yes, it would have been rather hypocritical of Turgon and his people to have been prejudiced towards someone in Erestor's situation, wouldn't it? What's a bit a Noldo-sindarin inter-relations when the King's daughter is wed to a Mortal after all?
Lovely touch with Glorfindel's comment about Sador marrying a Vanyar lady. What's her name BTW or do I have to wait until you get done iwth Elf, Interrupted Part Deux to find out? And him telling Erestor of Sador's acceptance in Aman was very nice, too.
"I don’t know about you, but I recognize an order when I hear one." Snicker! I hope that Erestor and Lindorillë are able to become friends if not more. At least Lindorillë is not a vapid, spoiled prejudiced airhead like Nimmeril was!
And why do I get a feeling htat Finrod has an inner matchmaker that he has to indulge periodically?
This is going to be so much fun to read...I assume that Erestor is going to have more stories to tell the royal family and others about Glorfindel... I hope there will be.
Take care and enjoy your break from teaching!
Edlyn
Author's reply
Well, I'm sure there were several Noldo-Sinda pairings in Beleriand, and they were probably more accepted in some places rather than others. Erestor seems to have been in a place where the Noldor clearly thought themseves better than the Sindar, thus his self-esteem problems. Luckily, he has Glorfindel there to help him. I think Erestor was more surprised at Finrod's revelaion that Lindorille was the daughter of bakers than actually afronted, as he probably figured the same social snootiness he endured growing up in Fingon's court in Beleriand would exist in Aman.
As to whether there will be other stories, I do not know. As far as I know, this is a single one-shot, but you never know when or how the muse will strike. Perhaps there will be other such tales for Erestor to tell Glorfindel's friends in Aman as they wait for him to return from Middle-earth himself.
Thanks for reviewing.

A new story! Hurrah! And one with Erestor! How wonderful to find it this morning when I came online (I was studying my Latin yesterday and didn't go online at all except to check something about declining third declension adjectives and i-stem nouns--I think I now know how certain Sindarin-speaking elflings in Rivendell must have felt about learning Quenya!).
It's nice to see Lindorillë grown up and I do hope that she treats Erestor kindly. Poor Erestor, he's like a teenager at his first dance! He's very lucky that Finrod has taken him under his wing.
I'm not at all surprised that Erestor broke down weeping at the mention of Glorfindel. Leaving that loveable "blond streak of aggravation" (as another friend of mine who writes Glorfindel stories calls him) must have been as much if not more of a wrench than leaving Arwen, Elladan, Elrohir and Estel in Ennorath.
I wasn't surprised that Erestor who was essentially a non-combatant reacted the way he did when brought into the antechamber. Nor am I surprised that Ingwë recognised what his subtle actions meant. Even non-combatants living under the threat of attack will develop the same defensive mechanisms as a warrior. In fact, I suspect that as a non-combatant, Erestor actually suffered more from the situation of living constantly under seige than someone like the Twins or Glorfindel who have the means to effectively do something tothe threat that a non-warrior would not.
It was good to see Ingwë, Arafinwë, Ingwion, and Sador again. But why does Ingwë think that Glorfindel still hates him? I thought they had gotten things sorted out between them (literally) ages ago.
I know I'm going to enjoy this story, meldonya. On to chapter two!
Edlyn
Author's reply
Thanks, Edlyn. I'm glad you liked this chapter. I think Ingwe is suffering from residual guilt, or perhaps the manner in which Erestor told the story made him think that Glorfindel still hated him. Who really knows? Hopefully, Erestor will disspell any residual guilt Ingwe may have as he shares his memories of Glorfindel with the High King.
Erestor may have been a non-combatant but that doesn't mean he didn't see action. Being a scout during the War with Saruon in the middle of the Second Age, he would've had several run-ins with the enemy. That's a given. Of course, he has given all that up to be Elrond's Chief Councillor and Administrator but that doesn't mean he's forgotten how to be a scout and how to be aware of his surroundings at all times. I think it's telling that Ingwe, who apparently has never experienced combat, reognizes this in Erestor. That what makes him such a great High King.
Thanks for reviewing.

What a fantastic take on Glorfindel’s and Erestor’s friendship. How strange, to become friends, ~because~ of a woman! That is rather amusing :)
I have a hard time imaging Erestor to be nervous and unsure of himself; fancy being put on the spot like that! I hate it, when you don’t even realise that something is expected of you, and everyone else is waiting for you to do it. Weird, but I also have a hard time imaging Glorfindel and Elrond as anything other than very good friends; that has been the vain of most stories that I have read, so it’s quite unusual. ah well. i can well imagine the snooty attitudes of some of the Elves of Lindon. the Noldor do seem to be categorically arrogant, don't they?
Will there be more story telling? I would like to hear more about their friendship. What year are the memories set in? after WoW, certainly.
And he’s dancing with her! I was rather worried that she would reject him for a moment. i'm so glad she didn't
Lovely :)
Author's reply
I think over time Elrond and Glorfindel did indeed become friends, but this ise arly in their relationship (Glorfindel had only just arrived from Aman a few decades earlier), so their relationship is still somewhat more formal, especially as Glorfidel no doubt takes his role as Elrond's protector seriously and Elrond may be resenting this at the time. It will take time for them both to trust one another far enough to become friends.
The memory of Glorfindel describing stealing a horse, which is mentioned in chapter 1, is set in the early years of the Third Age. As to whether any more stories come to light... only the muse knows.
I'm glad you enjoyed this story. Thanks for reviewing.

Hm .. I suppose you realise that I now want to know more about Sador's wife? Could it be Alassiel? And you finally hinted at Glorfindel's origin! Half Vanyarin makes sense, as he is Noldo, but with blonde hair - and that would leave only other possibility, that he was a close relative to Finrod (and then Finrod and the kings should know it in your universe). At least that is what I always thought.
Loved the story how Erestor and Glorfindel became friends over this arrogant elleth. And I was glad Glorfindel gave Erestor a bit more confidence; he needed that!
Thank you, that was fun to read!

We may well learn of Glorfindel's exact parentage in EI2, though perhaps not. Anyway, as to Sador's wife... not telling. *sticks out tongue* Glad you liked the story of how Glorfindel and Erestor became friends. I think Glorfindel was very good for Erestor's self-esteem. Thanks for reviewing.

Even if you've taken a break from 'Elf interrupted', you can't leave all of them for long ;-) It was so nice to see the Kings of Aman again, and Lindorillë - she seems to have improved quite a bit.
When Erestor approached her I was torn between amusement and pity. The poor guy still feels rather unsure of himself, what's probably only to be expected. And of course, now I'm hoping for a bit of romance.
Even if Erestor misses him, I am somehow glad Glorfindel remained behind for now, as I hope that means he'll drag the twins to Aman in the end (I still have a bone to pick with the Professor for hinting it could be otherwise instead of making it crystall clear that they sailed!)
Anyway, I hope it will help Erestor to be able to talk to someone who loves Glorfindel as much as he does. And the Amanians will probably be happy to have someone who tells them stories about the 'impossible golden-haired ellon'.
Author's reply
I am having fun in "projecting" these characters from "Elf, Interrupted" intothe future to see what has happened to them, especially without Glorfindel making things interesting for them. *grin* I think the kings had a double purpose in asking Erestor for tales of Glorfindel... to learn more about one whom they all love and miss and to help one who was also a friend of Glorfindel find his way in new surroundings. I suspect Finrod and maybe even Elrond put them up to it, not that they really needed an excuse to ask Erestor for news about Glorfindel, but it's nice that they go out of their way to make him feel welcome because of his friendship with " that impossible golden-haired ellon". *grin*
Glad you enjoyed this little tale. Thanks for reviewing.

I like your Erestor. Poor elf, having to face all the kings of Aman -- and the formal dance, too!
And Glorfindel has suddenly revealed Vanyarin ancestry -- now that there are no Vanyar nearby to hear about it. Hm.
Of course I'm curious about Sador's wife. And IIRC Netilmirë's husband was a Vanya?
[A question, because I'm confused: Does the object of Erestor's affections in this chapter have two names? In the seventh paragraph, a "Nimmeril" is mentioned: is that Lord Araminas's daughter or someone else? (Later Lord Araminas's daughter is referred to as "Gilraen.")
Also, in the notes, "Mornedhel" has a couple of letters reversed.]
This story was a nice change of pace, as just when I'd finished searching for pics and descriptions of the very *last* of the hundred-plus Shasta daisy cultivars on my list, I found a web site with the names of thirty-one more! [I'm trying to find the variety we had in California forty-plus years ago for my mother; it doesn't seem to exist.] And the alternative to Shasta daisy sites is a large pile of veggie seed and tree catalogs ... fanfic is a lot simpler. (Wondering if any elves in the Undying Lands are spending their immortal lives hybridizing daisies or breeding a truly blue daylily....)
Author's reply
OopsQ and no one caught that about the two names for the elleth. Thanks for pointing that out. Even I had forgotten I'd given her another name earlier. Just goes to show, I'm not crazy about her either. LOL
Yes, you are correct, Netilmire's husband was a Vanya. We will learn more about Sador's wife in the next book of "Elf, Interrupted".
As for the horticulture... sorry, not a clue. LOL

Very well done! I really enjoyed the bit of romance between Erestor and Lindorille. I'm very glad that she turned out better than how she was in "Elf Interrupted." Is Sador's wife a character we met in Elf Interrupted? I also liked how you delved into the relations between the Noldor, the Sindar, and those of mixed heritage and how all of them were treated. Thanks for writing!
Author's reply
Hi, Alqualondë. We will most likely learn more about Sador's wife in "Elf, Interrupted: Book Two". I won't say any more than that so as not to spoil it. I figured that in some circles, especially among the Fëanorians, the superiority complex of the Noldor would make itself manifest and they would treat their Sindarin vassals rather poorly. Some of these problems I think disappeared over time in Middle-earth but early in the Second Age some of the resentments are still there. Glad you like this little tale. Thanks for reviewing.

Oh, a wonderful short story! I needed something fun to read today because I've been so sick the last few days. :( It was interesting how they wanted to hear about Glorfindel from a friend and not from his lord... it's a different relationship altogether, though I think Elrond and Glorfindel were friends as well.
Anymore stories like this you want to share would be wonderful as far as I'm concerned. I'd like to see if Erestor and Lindorille get together too. And if you ever want to include Gil-Galad in a story that would be wonderful, after Glorfindel he is my second favorite elf... though I do think that Finrod is inching past him now! :)
Thanks again!

Cute little story. Interesting to see Erestor trying to fit in at a new environment. What I found particularly curious was that Ingwe still doesn't feel forgiven, which seems to suggest that he and Glorfindel don't get much of a chance to talk it out before Glorfy heads back to Middle Earth. Hints, hints...
Author's reply
Thanks, Nikara. This was a little piece that NiRi requested for a shy Erestor. I figure the poor ellon would feel pretty shy when he got to Aman. I think Ingwë and Glorindel continued having issues over what happened, but they still remained friends. We will see more of that in the next book of Elf, Interrupted. Thanks for the review.
