Yep! I don't think I would be too fond of surprises after the one Maeglin pulled on Gondolin either!
I was wondering if any of Finrod's companions had been released and now we know.

· Chapter 59: A Surprise Reunion
Hi Fiondil. Thanks for another chapter with some food for thought. I am reminded again that the Valar do live up to their promises, but not when and how one might expect.
I recall that Finrod once asked Irmo if the companions that died with him had been released from Mandos.
"Most have," Irmo said, "but you must not seek them out. Let them come to you." "Why?" Finrod asked.
"Each of them took oath to you, didn’t they?" Finrod nodded. "Their oaths will lead them to you when the time is right for them to do so. Until then, it is best not to intrude into their lives."
So now we know Irmo decided this was the right time, and still it is very difficult meeting for Finrod to endure, at first.
Glorfindel's retort to Sador's question shows that he (Glorfindel) is not always being difficult for no reason. Though Sador's experience could be said to be just as horrific as Glorfindel's, all react in different ways to the things that happen to them. Glorfindel had his entire world torn from him hour by hour, and I can understand his dislike of surprises. They present him with situations in which he has no control, and after Gondolin, I'd say that's understandable.
Still looking forward to the end of the preparation for and beginning of the Progress and wondering what other surprises are in store!
Joanne
Author's reply
Hi Joanne. I'm glad you remembered that conversation between Finrod and Irmo. And as you say, the Valar always keep their promises, just not in the way most of us would expect.
Glorfindel hates not being in control (can you tell? *grin*) and surprises to him are a manifestation of that, since he has no control over the surprise. Of course, he's not above surprising others, but that's the way it is. We're all full of contradictions and Glorfindel is no different.
One more chapter dealing with preparations and then they will be ready to leave for Tol Eressëa.

· Chapter 59: A Surprise Reunion
It seems that Glorfindel’s distaste for surprises (when it is not he who surprises somebody else, that is) is rubbing off on Finrod. Not that these four surprises were _bad_ surprises, just that two of the surprises were, well, surprising. To Finrod, at least. :-)
It is obvious that Mithlas’ mother is well on the way to recovery since she sent Mithlas off with the declaration that he was getting underfoot. And he might well have been hovering in his anxiety over her fading. Which would no doubt prevent her from having proper girl talks with the other ellyth in Lórien.
Heh – is it smart putting all those Reborn in rooms so close together? It is hard enough to predict what they are going to do with only one or two, and that problem only seems to increase with numbers. But I notet that it was _Sador_ who evidently arranged for the rooms. So if there are any raids on the kitchens – or other events of a similar nature – he will likely be up to his neck in whatever-it-is. ;-)
Author's reply
I think the last thing Finrod was expecting was to see people out of his past that way. I think he probably figured the Reborn he knew about would show up so it wouldn't have been a surprise for him. Evidently, Irmo had other plans. *grin*
And I suspect you are correct about Mithlas' mother. She probably couldn't take him hovering over her in his anxiety and was glad for the excuse to get rid of him for a while. I'm sure the separation will do them all a world of good.
Well, Sador being Sador.... you just never know. *grin*
Thanks for reading and reviewing, Sunny. I really appreciate it.

Ah, glad that Laurendil and Manwen are coming, too - really would have missed them. And they are going to be parents? YAY!
Ha, I kept wondering if one or two of the Reborn might have belonged to Finrod's companions who died with him, and I was right! :) Though Finrod obviously didn't expect it. Poor ellon, that was quite a shock for them, but I am sure he will be happy to have another one with him whom he can trust implicitly. And I remember the story about Eregil *grin* Guess he will fit in well with the other troublemakers ;)
Do I need to mention that I am glad Mithlas is with them, too, and that his mother and sister are getting better - well enough, in fact, to throw him out, as Finrod put it? And Celepharn is with them, too! Good. Now only Gilvagor and Haldir are missing, which hopefully will wait on Tol Eressëa. Maybe even with more of the ones who went with Finrod and Beren? And I hope there will be a few of the other Amaneldi warriors we got to know at the Tournament. I love to have everyone together :)
Very nice chapter, Fiondil!
Author's reply
Hi Kitty. Yes, Gilvagor and Haldir are waiting for them on Tol Eressëa. They are in fact coordinating things from that end. Who else shows up remains to be seen. Actually, I'll have to go back to the Tournament to refresh my memory as to who competed to see if they happen to be available for the Progress. *grin*
I was rather surprised the number of people reviewing the last chapter asking for Celepharn as one of the Reborn, so I was happy enough to include him in the party. I think he will play a central role in the Progress but I'm not entirely sure. We'll just have to wait and see.
Glad you liked the chapter. Thanks for reviewing. There will be one more "Tirion" chapter before they finally set off for Tol Eressëa.

So we´re seeing Earnur again: the fun is about to start.
And maybe if they´re joined by Celepharn... but we´ll see, I guess
I´ve been wondering about Arafinwe´s epesse since its first appearance. Do you think your Muse might tell you where it came from?
One aspect of that name seems obvious though: hounds are excedingly loyal creatures
It´s small wonder that Glorfindel´s heart wasn´t really in the festivities. Getting over something takes time: one always seems to be alternating between wanting to huddle up somewhere and never come out again
screaming/yelling at someone
resignation
feeling happier and more free than in a long time...
Well, I´m already looking forward to the next chapter
(and the first of the Tales from Vaire´s Loom!)
Greetings, Thalanee
Author's reply
Hi, Thalanee. We'll see who Irmo sends in the next chapter. There will be a surprise or two, I think. *grin*
I've known for some time about Arafinwë's epessë and why he was given it. It will be revealed in another story though that one won't be posted for some time yet. You'll just have to be patient. *grin*
I think Glorfindel will eventually come to terms with things and the Mid-summer festivities won't be too onerous for him in the future, at least while he's in Aman. When he returns to Middle-earth and sees that Beleriand is truly gone then the reality will hit him all over again, hence the Tapestry story "BLUE: Mid-Summer Memories".
Anyway, I'm glad you're looking forward to the next chapter and also the first of the Vairë's Loom stories. I will be posting that sometime during the first week of June.

· Chapter 58: Preparations and Problems
Glad to know the Maiar enjoyed their time with Glorfindel! Must have been a nice diversion from their usual duties.
In some ways Glorfindel's remark about The Amanians, even those who fought in the War of Wrath, have less experience in the fine art of treachery is pretty sad, but I can see where he and his otornor are coming from. Amanian warriors would be more trusting than the ones who have fought in the wars of Beleriand, and considering what has happened before, it is understandable that they want to make sure their guards are prepared for everything. Melkor certainly left his taint everywhere ...
Oh, if we can't have Laurendil, then I am glad Eärnur seems to be the one to accompany them; I really liked him.
Singly, they’re bad enough, but together..." he shook his head and gave Eärnur a sly smile and a wink. "I keep expecting to wake up some morning to find Tirion has disappeared or something. *ROTFL* Our dear Arafinwë is under no illusions, eh?
Hm ... Ingwë still feels uncomfortable about Ingoldo and his fellows? Should I take that as a hint that the ones not imprisoned in Formenos might plan something, too? *looks suspicious*
"Hmph," Eärnur said. "It’s been my experience that even if there is only one elleth in the group, it’s the ellyn who are outnumbered." *lol* So much about the supposedly 'weak' gender :D
And Finrod is right about the powers of the Valar. It's unimaginable what they are able to do in comparison to the Elves, not to mention us poor mortals.
Oh, poor Glorfindel. No wonder he feels so depressed at the moment! So far he had barely had time to come to terms with his past, and it is understandable that it just hit him fully now. I was very glad that Arafinwë was so understanding and that he and Finrod were there for him, giving him the feeling he has not to go through this alone.
"According to Sador, you’ve taken all the fun out of stalking you, and Beleg is just plain disgusted." *grin* Like that!
Author's reply
Glorfindel and Finrod, especially, have had experiences of treachery, beginning with Fëanor deserting them and burning the ships. There has been a long history or treachery among those who fled to Beleriand and Glorfindel as least can claim that his own death was a direct result of Maeglin's treachery. The Amanians really have no clue about it.
As for Ingwë... he may simply be being cautious but he doesn't rule out the possibility that some trouble may come from that quarter, either directly or indirectly and wants to make sure that he is able to minimize any trouble if it occurs.
While Glorfindel hasn't had time to come to terms with things, he is maturing enough that he doesn't pull what he did at Mid-winter and is willing to talk about what is troubling him. And at least Arafinwë has had enough experience with Finrod being a Reborn to know when to press and when not to yet still let Glorfindel know that he's there for him if needed.
A couple of more chapters detailing the preparations for the Progress and then we'll be on our way to Tol Eressëa. *grin*

The Elves having to take armed guards when visiting another city is so sad to me. I never could understand why they felt they had to attack and maybe kill each other. Could it be that a bit of Melkor’s malice dwells in Aman? I certainly hope not.
Glorfindel’s willingness to face the past and try to get past it once again shows how he is maturing.
Author's reply
Well, considering what happened earlier, they're not taking any chances. As for the Kinslayings.... that was a product of madness and despair and on more than one occasion I've had one of the Valar point out that since Melkor's evil permeates all of Arda, even Aman is not completely free of his evil, though it's less affected by it than the rest of the planet.
Glorfindel is indeed maturing though he's not there yet.

· Chapter 58: Preparations and Problems
It is good to see that Glorfindel is able to talk to Arafinwë even just a little bit about what he is feeling. I think it shows Glorfindel has taken great strides in maturity. One can only imagine how difficult it would be to assimilate the experience of the ending of Gondolin as well as one's own death and rebirth. It is also good that Arafinwë is understanding and does not demand more from Glorfindel than he give during this time. It must make it even more difficult, as even we humans know, when a traumatic loss occurs at the time of a holiday. It's hard to ignore, and the "holiday" celebration around one can only serve to make one's loss, by contrast, harder to deal with. Very heartening that Glorfindel has such an understanding father and brothers.
And two chilling notes: one the appearance of the word "treachery" and the second Ingwion and Finrod's discussion of the real powers of the Valar and Maiar. Easy at times to forget that their power is always (thankfully) tempered by their great love of the First-born.
Now to finish the preparations for the Progress. I'm sure Irmo will delight in surprising us all!
Joanne
Author's reply
Hi, Joanne. Yes, I think we see Glorfindel acting more maturely here. Certainly he learned his lesson with Ingwe at Mid-winter. It's a good thing Arafinwe has experience dealing with Reborn. No doubt when the first anniversary of Finrod's death came around, he and Earwen had to deal with Finrod's reactions to it, so he's aware of what Glorfindel must be feeling at this time.
'Treachery'.... it's always been the bane of everyone's existence in Middle=earth. I think Gandalf speaks of it after the Battle of the Pelennor Fields as having plauged the history of Arda from the beginning.
And it is easy to forget just how powerful the Valar and Maiar truly are and that they only show a small portion of that power to the Elves. ~Beings who can bring the entire universe into existence are not cutesy cherubs looking gushy. We all need to remember that.
Irmo's 'answer' to their request will come soon and it will indeed be surprising.

So Irmo sends Eärnur instead of Laurendil. I wonder who are the Reborn he will send and if some of them are known to the four. Looks like Irmo is also up to something.
If the Progress will lead to something time will tell. All in all I share Glorfindels and Finrods misgivings about the whole thing.

Hi, Hel. The story behind 'Pityahuan' will have to wait until I start posting the story of the Darkening, since that is when the Valar began calling him that.

Oh, meldonya!
I loved this chapter. I can't wait to see the royal progress!
"Pityahuan"...I love that. :)
I think my other favorite lines were "When ellith are around, the ellyn are always outnumbered...", the part about Tirion disappearing when Arafinwe's not looking, the part about Nienna's house always changing and the disappearing library (reminds me of the Chapel of Stars, being there only when needed), and the part about the Midsummer festival being held. Yes, it was heart-wrenching, but I appreciated its neat tie-in with the last Tapestry chapter. And I'm so glad Finrod was there!

Author's reply
I don't think that Glorfindel moped every Mid-summer while living in Aman, but I think that when he sailed to Middle-earth, and obviously sailing over drowned Beleriand to reach Lindon and the Grey Havens, the reality of it must have hit him hard. It would be one thing to know intellectually (because he wasn't present when it happened) that Beleriand (and therefore Gondolin) was no more, it would be another thing to see the evidence for himself as he sails across what should have been dry land. So, when he came to Middle-earth, all that came back with a vengeance. I'm sure with the help of Erestor and Elrond and the sympathetic support of Gil-galad and Cirdan, that he was able to put his 'moping' aside after awhile and go on with his (new) life.

Hi Fiondil,
I found this chapter most interesting, not least because of Glorfindel's comments regarding the origin of the Houses of Gondolin. If the head of a House was elected from within its members, that would mean that Glorfindel was elected to his position as Lord of his House. So in spite of his "pranks" with Ecthelion, Idril and Tuor, he must have had qualities that his house felt would make him a good leader for the House. That may seem self-evident, but I have speculated for a while as to the origin of the Houses of Gondolin and always thought of them having a hereditary leadership. I think we would all agree that Glorfindel must have been more than able to do the job to survive as he did, but being elected, in my view, would be even more gratifying and humbling than coming to the posiiton through heredity. Your solution to this question is eminently sensible on many levels.
Now to see Glorfindel's defense plans take shape. One hopes that his brothers will begin to see a bit of the sense and maturity he has within himself, even as he keeps his sense of play and mischief.
It will be interesting to see how the Tol Eressëans react to a visit not just from two kings, but Finrod and Glorfindel as well.
Thanks Fiondil for a most interesting chapter.

I wanted to shout out for someone to send you this review, but I'm sure it won't work, so better to write one for you...
I'm thinking that all this Reborn elves (the ones that will be bodyguards) are in a cross path, most of them should have been in Tol Eressëa if not for the fact that they went to Mandos, I'm sure that in the island are a lot of their own people, how can they fight againts them? The elves from mainland do not welcome them either, so I will see their loyalties going to Tol Eressëa people. And you will think that Glorfindel, Beleg and Finrod presence in the delegation will convince a lot of the island elves to at least listen to the Kings, Those three were legend in Middle Earth, I'm sure that they will be impress and maybe surprise to see them
Now, the Valars are a little responsible for the situation, they haven't learn yet how to deal with the other children, the fact that they took the Firstborn to Valinor before their time has contribute a lot to this mess, they should be a little less cryptic and more helpful, at least more friendly...
Now, for last, I can understand a little bit the Noldors that do not welcome the exiles, we really don't know what happened in Valinor after that, I'm sure that wasn’t easy for anybody and for them the worst...they live with the guilt of what their people did, they live with grief for what they lost and I'm pretty sure that the other elves blame them and isolate them too, it is a normal behavior to vent the frustrations with the survivors...
Thanks for this wonderful tale, I'm waiting for the time that Glorfindel meet Earendil and when he is ready to leave, I want to see the reactions...I would like to see some stories about them learning about Glorfindel in Middel Earth from elves arriving to Aman, I know that you did one whit Erestor and I loved it, OK, I finished my shopping list, I'll have another one ready by the next chapter
Author's reply
Hi Fantasia. You set out some interesting points about the Tol Eresseans and the Reborn, especially the fact that Glorfindel, Finrod and Beleg are all legends to the Tol Eresseans. It remains to be seen just how everyone reacts to them and to the Royal Progress.
I'm glad you are beginning to understand about the Noldor. It is my hope to actually write about what happens to those Elves who remained in Aman during the Darkening, including those of the Noldor who turned back with Arafinwe. Hopefully, I will have something to post before the end of the year.
I'm glad you are enjoying this tale. Your suggestion about writing some stories about Finrod and the others learning about Glorfindel from Elves who come to Aman during the Second and Third Ages is a good one and perhaps there will be such (short) stories in the future. It all depends on the Muse.

Interesting debate and explanations for the noble houses of Gondolin--most expedient as a form of organization and protection for the various groups. Turgon did well in that, at least. And the concern for the safety of the two kings is well expressed.

Arafinwë and Olwë _are_ going to Tol Eressëa. That is quite clear, and they are not going to change their minds about it unless the Valar were to tell them not to go. Which they won’t.
But Finrod, Glorfindel and Beleg _are_ going to have their say about the security arrangements. And I suppose that since Arafinwë and Olwë have put their feet down about going at all, they sort of have to let those paranoid – I mean _security-conscious_ ellyn have their say about their safety. And they have decided that they should pick reborn warriors as guards – which makes sense if there are those among those who otherwise would have been picked as guards would actually be considered part of the problem the kings are going off to try to solve.
*grins widely* It is quite an interesting way Glorfindel has of sending a message to one of the Valar. But since they do not have cell phones or mail, I suppose it will have to do.
Author's reply
There are many things to consider about this trip to Tol Eressëa and what they hope to accomplish there. I think at this point Arafinwë and Olwë are merely looking for answers, to learn what it is that the Tol Eressëan want before making their own suggestions. They know that they cannot force a decision on them, but some kind of decision needs to be made. There needs to be some type of strong leadership among the Tol Eressëans to give them a viable direction for their lives.
I think Glorfindel was just showing off with his shouting out the window. As Arafinwë points out, even *he* could have done that. *grin*

Just going and shouting out of the window to get a message via Maiar to the Valar ...
trust Glorfindel to try a thing like that. And as there are always some Maiar near him this will work too. I wonder if some of them retaliate against him for beeing used as a message-runner.
It´s good that Arafinwë listens to the four concerning the security of the group. But some of the Amanians will shurely be offended when the guard of the kings is assembled of Reborns. On the other side the people of Tol Eressëa will maybe react possitive to it.
But I can´t see a point in the visit of the two kings and their try to help one group to form a kind of leadership or governmet. Should the visit really lead to the forming of a government, most Tol Eressëans will resent it just because the Amanian kings were involved in the forming. Maybe even as a try of the Amanians to control them via a puppet-regime.
And I´m not surprised that it were those Noldor who went back who are resenting the Returnees the most. No one likes to be reminded of the mistakes one made. And the graver the mistake the more resentment agaist the person who brings the memories back. I wonder if one reason the Telri are not against the returning elves is that they have a guilty conscience for not aiding their Sindarin kin and that the Sindar on Tol Eressëa will reproach them for staying away.
Author's reply
I think at this point Arafinwë and Olwë aren't interested or willing to make governmental decisions on behalf of the Tol Eressëans. This is more of a fact-finding trip (even if some of the Tol Eressëans don't see it in that light) and they are more interested in hearing the views of the people on the island than in deciding what's best for them. Ultimately, of course, it's in everyone's best interest for there to be a real governing body on the island, whether it's a single person, like a king, or a group of people acting as a council.
As Glorfindel points out with regards to the resentment of the Noldor who returned with Arafinwë, guilt can cause extreme reactions in people. I'm sure a number of the Noldor who turned back still have ambivalent feelings about the whole thing.
Anyway, thanks for your thoughts on this, Hel. I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know what you think.

Hm..I'm not very sure about what I'm going to say, but I've been told, quite recently, about something canonical concerning a debate between the Ainur and the Elves remaining in Valinor, debate having as topic whether the Exiled Noldor (and perhaps other Elves from Beleriand) should be allowed to return. If you know something about this, I'd be very grateful to find out more, since I don't have access to the volumes of "The History of Middle-earth". Especially, because, as you've said, that debate became at one point very heated. I personally am very interested to know who else believed itself righteous enough for actually having the right to open its mouth.
Small wonder regarding the feelings of the people living in Tol Eressea. Willingly or not, I suppose the Amaneldi were rubbing in the Noldor's faces their deeds (and, undoubtly, with a bit of exaggeration) on a daily basis. Therefore, Finrod and the rest are right; the Noldoran's intervention would be viewed as some need to fling in their faces his superiority and his goodness of the heart. At first. Then, I guess it's up to Finarfin..As for the Sindar..their issue it's even more difficult. Caught in a war not of their making, their Telerin kin is unable to understand them and Beleg's own experience might be the best proof.
A good chapter, Fiondil. Glorfindel's antics got me smiling and I liked much your idea of having Reborn warriors assigned to guard Finarfin. Reading about them, alive and hale, I should be able to wipe off my head the gruesome image of their deaths.
"But where does their Peace end and our responsibilities begin?" My question exactly.

I have no idea if there is a canonical reference to such a debate, to tell you the truth. The debate stated here is based on the storyline and the conflicts between the various groups, something that I think must have happened at some point though by the time Elrond and Galadriel sail at the end of the Third Age, it is hoped such conflict has been put to rest.
This story has been as much about the Tol Eressëans and the Reborn finding acceptance from the Amaneldi as it has been about Glorfindel's personal journey towards maturity as he prepares for his return to Middle-earth as the emissary of the Valar.
How both these issues are treated is the main focus of this story. And, of course, there is always the Valar and their agendas to consider as well....
