This was sweet, but not too sweet! Well, now Finrod can cross the Elflings off his 'To Do List'!
Now to find out why Glorfindel changed his mind about coming to Lorien.
Eonwe, just has too much fun with that book of his!:<)
More please,
Lynda
Author's reply
We'll learn more about why Glorfindel is in Lórien in the next chapter. I'm glad you liked the chapter. I tried not to make it to saccharine.
What a lovely thing to wake up to a new chapter of one of my three most favorite fics! (The other two belong to you as well...)
I loved Ingwion delivering "messages" from his parents to Lindorille about her fading, the scolding and the kiss, and then giving his own words and kiss to her.
The whole scene between Finrod, Glorfindel, Ingwe and the young elleth was so very touching, and I liked how I could see the changes in her as well, in her reactions to them.
And, of course, the way Veryandur reminded them that it was time to eat was perfectly apt for a small child. My own youngest child would tell me that his stuffed toy was hungry when, in fact, he was himself but didn't want to sound selfish by demanding I feed him immediately.
What a change in Sorondil and Oromendil that they would be relieved and happy to be staying in Lorien instead of going to Arafinwe in Tirion! Who would have believed it even a few short weeks ago? :)
How tactful of Finrod to refer to Lindorille's fading as an illness. I can just see how glum her expression was when the kitchen was mentioned. I love being in a kitchen when it's my idea, but having to do kitchen duty as a punishment is definitely not a preferred activity.
The unclad Maiar "peanut gallery" was quite amusing as was Eonwe's unclad appearance with the Book of Oaths. I'll not bother asking for details of what Finrod said other than to ask whether it was in Sindarin or Dwarvish. *grin*
It's quite obvious that Lindorille is still very fragile emotionally, but I'm sure that Finrod, Glorfindel and Ingwion are quite aware of that as well, and will give her the opportunity to finish healing, along with gentle affection and love.
The secretarial job is a terrific solution (and, hey! Maybe Finrod will write to Amarie more now that Lindorille will be there to nag him about it.... *snicker*) More seriously, it's a wonderful idea, and I would have liked to have been among the unclad Maiar to have been able to see the smile that was the result for real and not just in my imagination.
I think I'm going to go read your Erestor story again, to see our young elleth all grown up...
As always, well done! :)
Author's reply
Hi Rhyselle. All the elflings have changed in many ways (mostly positive) since we first met them, especially, I think, Sorondil and Oromendil. They've come a long way from the little whining brats we saw in Book One.
I'm not sure what Finrod said myself, but it obviously wasn't what one said in polite company. *grin*
Finrod's solution to Lindorillë I think was the right one and I think it is the beginning of her squirehood though no one is thinking that far in advance at this time. What the others end up doing I have no idea though perhaps someday we will see what they are like when all grown up.
Thanks for reviewing. I've been missing your long reviews. I hope this one is not a fluke. *grin*
So now the elflings are somewhat settled and can move on, These experiences will very much shape the adults they become, they are very much bridges to the future. Always enjoyable when the Maiar show up, especially Eonwë! Maybe Finrod thought he'd slip that one by? Not a chance...*grin*
Author's reply
These elflings are the first step towards bridging the gap between the Amanian elves and everyone else. If Finrod and the others can show these children the correct way to go they will in turn teach their own peers and so on. Or at least that's the theory but one has to start somewhere.
Oh, meldonya! Wonderful, brilliant work as always! Thank you for giving me this little gift to brighten my Saturday...something nice to think about during the dumb mandatory meeting that was scheduled today. It's also my Anatar's birthday, so after the ridiculously early meeting, we're heading out of town for the day. I'm glad I read it now, then...I'd have missed it were I to not be online!
Poor Lindorille, being scolded by Ingwi. But at least she got a kiss from him...I wouldn't mind a kiss from Ingwi, or Finda, myself. *grin* And she got compared to Alassiel!
Alassiel not an elfling, hmmmm? Sure she's not. Right. *laughs*
I'm glad Lindorille's feeling so much better...AND she gets to be Finda's new secretary, yay! And the elflings will all stay with Finda! *more cheering* YAY!!!
~Kaylee!
Author's reply
Thanks, Kaylee. I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter and that you got to read it before real life took over for the day. *grin*
Ingwion was great here – first scolding Lindorillë from Ingwë, then giving her a kiss from Elindis, and then tell her he’s glad she’s still there.
Very sensible decision to keep all the children in Lórien, I think. Particularly for Sorondil and Oromendil it is important to stay here – they’re learning a lot about the Reborn, and something very different from the rubbish their parents told them. This would be a valubale lesson for them. And Glorfindel is right, Finrod has a new admirer. I hope Vorondil isn’t upset when he returns and feels he has been replaced!
Really, I’d love to see Finrod as father, and Glorfindel, Ingwion and Sador as well. They all have such a great way with elflings.
Author's reply
Ingwion surprised me as I didn't expect him to take such an active role with Lindorillë, but he was obviously acting as the Crown Prince of the Vanyar and technically Lindorillë's liege rather than as Námo's apprentice or Finrod's cousin.
I think Finrod realized that as soon as the children were all brought to Lórien the original plans for them had to change especially when it was left to others to decide their fates while he was... er... away. *grin*
As for Vorondil... I think he probably looks upon all the younger elflings as the younger siblings he never had and so will take Lindorillë's infatuation in stride.

I never expected it to be Irmo's tent that they painted!
Yes, quite a change for Artelemnar! Is he in love with Region? That would be ironic, since I assume he was also a participant in the kin-slaying at Doriath ... not that RL isn't ironic....
Ingil was a hoot! And I loved the Maiar audience, also Irmo’s reaction. They’ll be recounting that story -- well, forever.
'"I wish I could’ve helped paint," Veryandur said with a pout. "All I got to do that day was pull weeds"' -- They should at least let the poor elfling plant some bean seeds. Radishes show a quick result and are almost fool- or elfling-proof as well (and come in various colors for additional child-appeal).
Well, at least they left Finrod’s pavilion alone....
Now the picky-proofreader part (hey, my great-grandmother wrote English grammar texts -- it’s not my fault):
"not caring about sleeping Valië" -- Even though Estë is only one Valië, as the sentence is written, the noun should be plural (try it with some English nouns; it’s more obvious with words that are made plural by adding “s”). If you prefer a singular noun, add an article.
There's also a Region in Book 1, though a different elleth. I'm not saying there couldn't have been two ellith with the same name -- just bringing it to your attention in case you didn't realize.
Author's reply
Thanks for the grammar correction. It's sometimes hard to keep it all straight when writing in two different languages at the same time. *grin*
Region, I think, might be a common name (it translates as 'Holly') among the elves, so it's not surprising there are two ellith with that name.
I'm sure the other elflings were allowed to paint something... Lord Irmo wouldn't have wanted any jealous feelings to fester between them.
I think in the end the Maiar, Irmo and Este enjoyed the entire incident very much.

Your Reborns live their new lives to the extreme. Burning down half of the garden indeed! Can you mention that story in the next chapter? I desprately need a good laugh!

Well that story won't show up in the next chapter but it might be told in a later chapter, you never know. *grin*

(Tries to smother giggles)
“ …And so, a new readition was established, that any white surface within the Gardens of Lórien would be an invitation to those who dwelt therein that they might express the essence of their fëar upon it, in colors that rivaled those of the rainbow, or those of Yavanna’s flowers.” Fits your Valar-universe, doesn’t it? :-D
And Irmo did _so_ invite it, didn’t he? He did, after all pick the rainbow as his crest. BEG
Such a pity this site doesn’t support fancy fonts or multicolor graphics – I should have loved to use both in this little comment, well, people will just have to use their imaginations (which, I suppose can be lurid enough)
(Still tries to smother giggles)

Hi Sunny. I'm glad you liked this chapter. It was a lot of fun to write. I'm sure Irmo and Este were hoping someone would do something like what these Reborn and elflings did. *grin* Thanks for reviewing.

It seems that elflings are just like human children. The minute adults are out of the picture; they look for mischief to get into, firmly believing they will never get caught. They do not even consider the possible of the Maia being around to watch their every move.
How gracious Lord Irmo was. I’m sure his pavilion was quite beautiful. I think most of us sometimes act like children. Who wants to grow up completely anyway? Not me. And having them paint all the other pavilions along the lake will certainly keep them out of mischief for a while. (The Maia joined in. LOL)
Author's reply
Children are children whatever their race... when the adults aren't around... and of course these children aren't quite used to the idea of Maiar hanging around unclad watching everything. I don't think the Reborn think about that either.
Irmo was indeed quite gracious and probably found the entire thing amusing, except of course for the rope. *grin*

Ooh colourful painting with no artistic skill required. May I join in - pleeeeese? *Looks around bed-sit and wonders about the magnolia walls.*
Loved this Fiondil. It begs the question; Is graffitti art or merely vandalism? I suppose it depends on the viewpoint.
Author's reply
Hi harrowcat. I don't think the elves have the concept of graffitti, and they would be more artistic about it anyway. Glad you enjoyed this chapter. Thanks for letting me know.

Back again, spotted a typo, you are missing an 'n' in the 4th section, 'The three ellyn, (n)ow splattered with differant colored paints,----'.
Also in chapter 21, 4th section, shouldn't it be three elflings and not four when they are agreeing that the herbal teas thay have been given taste horrid?
Sorry to be so picky but this sort of thing bugs me, makes me want to grab a blue pencil and go in and correct it!
More please,
Lynda
Author's reply
Thanks for pointing out the typo. Not sure how that got missed. As for the elflings... you've left off Eruanna in your counting. She doesn't say anything (much) in the chapter but she is there, so it's four elflings agreeing about the herbal teas and not three.
Author Reply: Oops! My bad. You're right. It should be the three other elflings agreeing. I misread what you were saying. It's been corrected. Thanks again for your eagle-eyes. *grin*

Thank you so much for sharing! I'm glad Lord Irmo liked the idea of painting pavilions *grin* although he prefers his grass to be green, huh? At least they didn't paint it black or something, though maybe Namo would like that...*grins*

· Chapter 22: The Great Paint Job Incident
Having children playing with the reborn makes sense. In my eyes beeing reborn is a bit like having a second childhood. And children like to play with other children rather than with adults. And is has the efect that the children will get used to the reborn and accept them so that in the end they are more readily accepted into society.
So Gwindor is not sad, he is bored. Bored elflings in combination with paint can only lead to chaos.
I wonder how many others also thought that Lorien needed more colour and just don´t dared to do anything?
" "We’re not elflings," protested Gwindor as Region and Celepharn nodded in agreement. " - No, they are not elflings they just behave like elflings.
" Ingil nodded, giving them a mischievous look. "Which is probably why she immediately ordered every pavilion in the groves set aside for the Reborn painted. The elves were quite enthusiastic about it and even some of the Maiar helped." " - To have the feeling that Lorien needs more colour seems to be a rather widespread.
I´m glad that Celepharn is behaving much nicer now. I really liked to know more about the lessons he got. But I also want to know about him the nearly burning down the gardens.
Great chapter. As was the chapter before.

Wondering why Glorfindel needs to be in Lórien. "Do not take your eyes off him for a second." Hm. Or is that SOP with Glorfindel? And if it isn't, it probably should be....
"'They’ve been giving us these herbal teas every day. Horrid stuff. They said we had to take them because we’ve been sad.' / 'We were a lot sadder whenever we had to drink them'" -- I love the fanon motif of horrid-tasting teas and potions. Don't know why: I can remember several different nasty things I had to drink as a child that certainly weren't in the least amusing at the time!
"'When dealing with the Reborn... and elflings, one learns to take certain behavior in stride.' / Both Finrod and Glorfindel nodded, their faces wreathed with wide grins at the memories of their own time in Lórien" -- You've been remiss in not telling us more of those incidents....
A belated welcome back.
Author's reply
I think the Valar are beginning to understand that not taking their eyes off Glorfindel for a second should be SOP with him. *grin*
Well, I remember all the horrid stuff that was foisted on me as a child whenever I was sick and frankly it hasn't changed much even as an adult, so the horrid teas and potions here are quite appropriate and true to life.
Perhaps someday if the Muse is kind I will write little snippets about their stay in Lórien and some of their own 'adventures in living'. We'll see....

Hmmm ... I like Meneldil’s idea to bring more elfings to Lórien to play with the Reborn. I think they’re good for them.
And I see these two elflings are learning themselves that the Reborn don’t deserve the contempt their own parents have for them. Very good!
Ah, they want to paint rainbows on the pavilions? As that’s the emblem of Irmo, the idea isn’t that bad *lol* And the two Maiar discussing about interfering or not was fun, too. It’s true – they are under order to keep out of things, after all :)
Of course I was snickering through half the chapter. To watch them painting and realising that all these Maiar were watching was so hilarious. And then Irmo turning up ... *LOL* I could imagine how they felt at this point!
I think Lórien will going to be much more colourful and lively in the future *snicker* It *really* needs more elflings!
Oh, and I am glad to know Artelemnar got around to be a much nicer elf than the one we got to know earlier when he was so nasty to Sador. I had already wondered what might have happened with him.
Thank you – that chapter was great!

Hi, Kitty. Glad you liked this chapter. It was a lot of fun to write, especially having the elflings and Reborn think they were actually getting away with it. *grin* We'll see more of Celepharn/Artelemnar in a subsequent chapter. · Chapter 21: Reclaiming Elflings
‘The Great Paint Job Incident’. The mere name makes me wish I had access to a time machine so that I could go ahead to next week and read about it...
A small nitpick: Míriel Serindë, Finwë's _first_ wife, is the one described in the Silmarillion as being particularly skilled at needlework. Nothing much is said about Indis, apart from her being a blonde. There was certainly nothing in the Silmarillion about her being more skilled than the average elleth at using a needle and thread. On the other hand, there is nothing said about her being _less_ skilled, either. Yet I sort of got the feeling when reading the Silmarillion that the two of them were sort of Yin and Yang, very much opposites in terms of personality and interests.
You may have read it differently, or something might be said about the possibility that Indis might have consciously tried to model herself after Míriel, including trying to become as similar to her, both in personality and interests, as possible. (Not a very healthy attitude, IMHO.)
Perhaps there is something for a future story here?
Author's reply
While Míriel Serindë was known for her needlework, that is not to say that other ellith were not as accomplished and with all the ages of Arda at their disposal it seems odd that Indis would not be able to excell in the same sort of activities as others. As I have Indis in Lórien and all it just seemed natural that she would take over the tutelage of Eruanna in the art of embroidery, a skill which most ellith would learn as a matter of course. Beyond that I have no real clue as to her personality, not having been introduced to her yet. Perhaps if Finrod takes up her offer to visit we'll learn more about her.
