Interesting turn of events, this hunt. Certainly not anything I had expected, knowing Glorfindel and Finrod are in another dimension (something, of course, Ingwion and the others can't know). Well, at least you have me wondering into what trouble they will get this time. I don't even dare to hope that nothing happens ;-)
Author's reply
Of course nothing will happen. NOT! LOL The next couple of chapters should prove very interesting (I hope).
Ohmygosh meldonya!!!!!
Ingwion before the Valar...a Hunt...oh, oh, what is going to happen now? And we finally get to hear the tale of Vorondil, only not, because you ended the chapter! I'm back from 'the Void', with a new email address no less, lol. Tell, tell!!! *can't wait to hear the story*
Namarie for now and congrats on an excellent chapter,

Author's reply
Oh, we'll learn about Vorondil Sr. eventually, don't worry. Glad you liked the chapter. The next couple of chapters will be sticking with Ingwion and the others before we go back to Finrod and Glorfindel.

I love it when Námo has to serve punishments - he brings so much humor and fun to them! And it really serves to see the other side of him - I guess most elves see him as the stern Lord of Mandos without seeing his 'softer' side.
The more you write of Vorondil the more I like him. A big 180 degrees from the time when he hurt Glorfindel. Then I didn't really care what happened to him. But he's really become a favorite.
Ces
Author's reply
Námo serving punishments, and some of them self-inflicted... it is a rather amusing picture and it's fun to write him as not the Vala most likely to win the Doom and Gloom award every year. And I'm glad you like Vorondil as well. I didn't like him either at first but then he messed with both Glorfindel and Finrod and the results are...well, quite different from what one would expect. He's become one of my favorite OCs.

Ah, I see, Aldundil and Vorondil finally start to play! And I have to admit, their games are rather fitting for mischievous elflings. I am sure all the Valar and Maiar around have a lot of fun, even if they don’t show it.
Hm ... you mean Námo wants to play with them? Very suspicious. I wonder what they will get into *now*?

Meldonya,
Greetings to you from that part of the *wry grin* Void known as Bismarck. Really, it's not as Void-like as you painted it, Fiondil, I'm ashamed of you. *chuckles and gives you Nienna-like pointed look*
As you can see, there's even Internet access in the hotel's lobby!!! What do you know! *grins* So here I am, reading and reviewing and snickering at this chapter (and since I all but told Atto to leave me alone whilst I checked email, he doesn't know what in the name of Lord Namo I'm laughing at)!!
THANK YOU so much for adding more to EI!
And...well, poor Tiutalion! *laughs* Covered in dirt by two "naughty elflings". What next?
*snicker* Poor aforementioned elflings, trying to figure out Nienna's mixed messages! Love it, meldonya! More?

· Chapter 9: Playing at World's End
Oh, I haven't laughed so hard in such a long time!
This was a lovely break from the distress and pain of the former chapters (even though you've got humorous bits in them, this chapter is truly funny!).
I love the opening scene where Aldundil and Vorondil start breaking out of the roles they'd been molded into by their lives as a family. Aldundil is becoming an Atto and not just being called that by his son.
I know exactly how surprised Vorondil must have felt when his father said "let’s see what kind of mischief we two can get into before they catch us." It's not exactly the kind of thing you'd expect a responsible adult to say. *grin* Sneaking after sweets in the kitchen! At first I thought that Aldundil should have known that they were being allowed to get to their goal of the sweets cupboard, then remembered that until very recently, he probably had very little direct contact with the Maiar. It's easy to forget that most elves probably have never directly interacted with one of the Valar or Maiar--at least knowingly--since the main characters in this tale are thrust into situations where they are pretty much continually associating with them.
Nienna must spend a lot of time trying to hide her amusement when she's dealing with the elves. But what I liked best was how she dealt with Vorondil's fear after they were "caught."
"So... which one of you was Lúthien?"
*It can’t be Vorondil,* he [Námo] exclaimed, nearly incapacitated with laughter, *he has the wrong color eyes.*
Mwhahahahahahahahaha! That was so funny! And having to help make more sweets was an appropriate punishment.
What a sad statement about Aldundil's life that he hadn't felt as happy as he did when Nienna praised his early efforts of illumination since before Vorondil was born. I have to say that I am much more sympathetic to him now than I originally was when he hacked off Vorondil's hair after the trial.
Hmmm. Will we ever find out just what Arafinwë did to get sent to Nienna's? I'm assuming that it was when he was Lord Manwë's apprentice after he returned to Tirion and became the Noldoran.
I've exchanged dirt clods with my siblings during my childhood, but never with a parent. The mental image of Aldundil acting like an elfling with his son was so lovely and funny and poignant. One gets the impression that neither of them has had much fun in their lives together. And, yes, Tuitalion did make a mistake in what he told them. *giggle* Another prize image is of him crowned with the lump of dirt and the weed. *another giggle*
It is very obvious that Vorondil has learned a lot from Finrod, even to the issue of "appropriate" (albeit unusual) punishment. Of course, now that they've trashed the cloister, the weeding is an appropriate punishment. Vorondil still needs to work on forethought, doesn't he? *grin*
I'm certain that the other Maiar will lovingly tease Tiutalion a bit, but then probably share their own stories of silly things that happened to them.
"What would you like to wager?" Oops... I should have known... Hee! I have a feeling that the expert on the right kind of mischief is going to be the one to teach Aldundil and Vorondil the most.
By the end of this chapter, it is clear that father and son have begun to learn more about each other, and to strengthen their love with knowledge of each other. They have a long way to go, but, somehow, I feel a lot more hopeful for them than I had been.
BTW, I noticed that neither of them even mentioned Finrod and Glorfindel's current predicament, or asked about it. Does Vorondil even realize that they are still alive and relatively safe? Or is he refusing to even contemplate their fate? Or has Nienna quietly diverted him from thinking about it in detail?
Excellent chapter!
Author's reply
Aldundil and Vorondil are learning what it means to be a real Atto and a real Yondo to one another, which was the whole idea of sending them to Nienna in the first place. It really had nothing to do with "punishment".
I think we will see why Arafinwë was sent to Nienna and what happened there when I finally get the Darkening story written. Once I finish up The Last Messenger and Stirrings of Shadow I plan to start on that story though I probably will not post it until after Elf, Interrupted: Book Two is finished or nearly so, as I don't want to spoil certain plot surprises in that story.
BTW, I noticed that neither of them even mentioned Finrod and Glorfindel's current predicament, or asked about it.
In the previous chapter, Aldundil did ask if Finrod and Glorfindel were alive and was satisfied, or at least accepeted, Nienna's answer about them. Vorondil, when he woke up immediately asked about Finrod and was assured by Nienna that Finrod was fine and that someday Vorondil would see him again. Vorondil has had enough dealings with the Valar through Finrod to accept what they say and not question it. And I'm sure Nienna is keeping him busy enough so he's not constantly thinking about it.
Tnanks for reviewing. I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter.

(laughing gleefully) Oh, now I am wondering what Aldundil and Vorondil did to get in trouble after Námo and Nienna made the bet! This was such a nice bit of comic relief after the stress of the earlier chapter and as usual you timed its presence just perfectly.
My ribs ache now and its all your fault, meldonya! (grin). Of course, now my imagination is running rampant about the trouble the THREE of them are going to get into. Thanks for the laughter. Really.
Eru bless,

Author's reply
We'll probably never know for sure what they did and it could've been something as innocuous as getting into a food fight or dumping sand in the courtyard. At any rate it will be amusing to see just what kind of trouble the THREE of them get into and if Aldundil and Vorondil survive the oredeal. LOL

Luthien and Beren after the Silmarils huh, Marillian's(sp) cookies must be extra special and Tiutalion deserved to get embroiled in their games, he needs to loosen up a bit. I did like Vorondil's rationalisation though, making the punishment fit the crime!:<)

Glad you hear the pacemaker implant went well. A stressful time indeed and I'm glad this chapter helped to unstress you a bit. Tiutalion isn't as straight-laced or as uptight as you may think, but getting attacked by two Elves, after having done battle against Balrogs and other minions of Melkor has to be somewhat embarrassing for him. *grin* AndI thought Vorondil's rationalization was quite amusing. I'll like to see that happenning! I Aldundil and Vorondils' case is really sad....Vorondil never really sees Aldundil as a proper ada does he?
Author's reply
On the contrary, it is Aldundil who doesn't see himself as a proper ada; Vorondil loves his ada dearly and idolizes him, though his perspective is skewed and it needs to be straightened so he can admire his ada in a correct manner. The love has always been there, as we saw when he thought Finrod had killed Aldundil.

“Your son, hideously impulsive though he may be” -- *shakes head*
"Calm down, Vorondil.... There’s no need to get excited, child. Findaráto and Glorfindel are fine and someday you will see them again” -- I notice that Nienna carefully avoids the issue of where Finrod and Glorfindel *are* and when they’ll be able to return....
“We’ll work something out for you to do, Aldundil” -- Hopefully Aldundil will come out of this with a new profession that suits him better than the Exchequer.
Just wondering how it would bollix things up if Aldundil or Vorondil Jr. learn that Vorondil Sr. has already been released from Mandos....
Author's reply
The Valar never lie but they're very careful with the truth, so everything Nienna says to Vorondil is the truth, not just the whole of it.
We'll find out in the next chapter what Aldundil ends up studying. And it will be some time before Vorondil Sr. is ready to be released into the general public. At the moment he is still figuring out how to move his fingers now that he has them again. He'll be staying in one of the Gardens of the Reborn for a while yet and then he has to continue on to Lórien. It'll be some time before Aldundil even learns that his brother has been re-embodied.

Yes, it's a very broken family, but hopefully Nienna (with a little help from her brothers) will be able to mend some of the pieces together, if not all of it. *wondering how Finda and Glorfi are doing in the tenth dimension*
Author's reply
Yes, Aldundil's brother, Vorondil, Sr., has been released from Mandos and if you re-read the chapter you will see that Námo tells Nienna that he released him the moment that Calalindalë entered his wife Vairë's domain. He's presently residing in one of the Gardens of the Reborn and it will be some time before he's sent to Lórien, so it will be a while before he's released into the general Amanian society. By then, it is hoped that Aldundil and his son, Vorondil, Jr., will have come to terms with everything and will no longer be under Nienna's care.
Finda and Glorfi are doing fine in the tenth dimension. It'll be a few more chapters, though, before we get back to them.

Marilliën spent all of five minutes putting your meal together. We wouldn’t want to disappoint her now, would we? *LOL* Can I borrow her? It takes me so much longer to do the same!
Anyway, interesting ‚punishment’ for Aldundil – to play with his son. But maybe they can catch up with what they missed earlier on in this way.
Valië of Last Resort? *snort* Oh yes, that’s like Námo! On the other hand, I do understand Nienna only to well that she wants to drown not only certain elves, but her own brother sometimes. So Námo has released the older Vorondil? That will be interesting – and I have to admit, I am a bit worried about what will happen, in spite of all my curiosity. This was a glorious chapter and I loved the title!!!
I laughed out loud when the Maiar started playing hide and seek.
It was great to have this 'Lindorille's chapter' - great break from the monumental mess that was before! I loved her courage, her boldness, her temerity, her tenacity... what a great character. When she sat before the Valar - so woebegone - I wanted to cry!
One phrase that tickled - 'half of Lorien knew where she was...'
And sending the two 'adult' elflings to the Reborn was brilliant!
Sad, sad ending.... *goes away to sob quietly*
Author's reply
Thanks, Agape. I'm glad you found this such a glorious chapter and that you loved the title. I thought it was inspired, myself. *grin*
Lindorillë is quite the elfling, isn't she? I'm sure all the Maiar in Lórien admire her boldness, courage, tenacity and temerity, even if they know it's all misplaced. And I'm sure they are all concerned for her that she's beginning to fade out of despair.
And I'm glad you think sending Sorondil and Oromendil to the Reborn was a brilliant idea. I think both sides can learn from one another.
