*Sigh*
What's wrong between the twins? It seems Elladan can't wait to be off exploring and away from Elrohir - while Elrohir doesn't seem to know what he wants, and is fading by the day.
Initially Elladan seemed more reluctant to sail, but has adjusted well - but is Elrohir feeling guilt at dragging his brother along against his will?
Author's reply
I think Elrond shares your thoughts. He is equally perplexed.. and feeling quite helpless. Poor peredhil.

Poor Elrohir. Poor Elladan and poor Elrond. They are all suffering and I'm confused as to what is going on with Elrohir! I hope he finds what he needs to heal.
Glad to see Elladan seems to be recovering nicely. I think he needs a little time away.
You have created a great story and I'm enjoying it.

Poor Elrond. There's nothing worse than seeing one's children suffer, wanting to help, and being rebuffed. No wonder he's frustrated. I'm glad to see that Elladan is having a good time anyway.
This reads very fast. The prose and storytelling are slickly done.
Author's reply
I do feel bad for Elrond. As we've discussed, this is the power of POV, too, as the story is more compellingly told from his perspective. This has been good to write. :D

I liked the idea of the twins bringing certain items west, chronicles of the life of their sister and brother, and the grandchildren their parents would never meet.

Hmmmmm, a mystery: What turned them off course? What did Elladan say? And for what did he ask forgiveness from Elrohir?
Poor Glorfindel had to suffer anxiety over where to go once they hit land. No worries oh great balrog slayer - you are loved by everyone!
"Glorfindel laughed again, but he ceased from his fun. “Is it not good to know that this voyage does not require any great skill on our part? It gives me hope that Legolas and his dwarf also managed the trip.”" *snicker* I'm sure Gimli complained all the way!
Never been a fan of Celebrian, but I'm glad to see she his healed. And Elrond deserves all the happiness he can get.
I'd love to see a reunion with Legolas in this story - to compare their sea journeys if nothing else!

You tell me about not liking Celebrian in every story, and I laugh because I wonder what there is to dislike? She isn't in the stories, per se, just an entry in the Tale of Years.
But, I'm glad you are enjoying the tale and wondering what is happening. I hope I can bring this to an artful conclusion. :D

Great Chapter! A few things that stood out for this reader were Idril and Tuor - yay!, Elladan beseeching the Valar - dang!, Celeborn defending Gimili - ha!, Glorfindel's dilemma - hoorah!, and A New Baby! - woohoo!
However, such are the mysteries of being Peredhil that the human imperative to procreate does not go away. ;) Very accommodating for an elleth that really does not want to settle for just grandchildren.
But now, tricksy author that you are, after cloaking the details, I am pondering over exactly who it was that Elladan made his petition for... be cool and never tell us! ];}
So glad there is some more to come!

I've loved your stories for years and I was thrilled beyond belief to see a new story (or several!) from you! This is bittersweet and absolutely lovely, and the perfect fix for my honors thesis-induced stupor.
I really liked your description of Glorfindel's reunion with Turgon. It's always interesting to see fun-loving Glorfindel turn serious, and I loved the hesitation between his heart and his loyalty. I hadn't realized that Glorfindel (& Elrond) would be uncertain of Glorfindel's place in Aman, since he was returning home. It really brought home the idea from HL that Elrond & Glorfindel, lacking family for a variety of reasons, had really built a life and family in Imladris. I think you captured that dynamic of this reunited family very well.
Would love to see more of Galadriel & Celeborn, pretty please?

I will be doing some of the story from Celeborn's perspective, so he will be there! I am glad you are enjoying this - it is a thrill when I see a story so clearly like this.

How beautifully resolved! That there is joy and pain mixed in every choice is a truth we tend to forget, but I really liked to see how much all of them had to look forward to, despite the painful loss that they brought with them.
The wake at Elrond's was well done, I think, and I mostly liked the image of Nienna and Este walking among the guests and sharing comfort... and also Glorfindel's joy in being sailing home at last.
And most of all I liked that terrifying moment by the Meneltarma, when they thought the Road was closed to them! All lovingly wrapped up... and the family reunited as they were meant to be, with hope still alive. Looking forward for more!
Author's reply
Interesting how expectations change, isn't it? What one thought was needed for happiness changes with circumstance, and what one took for granted is less so. There are still a few mysteries to be resolved!

A very nice read...Loved it!
Glorfindel really likes to irritate Celeborne here, and I like how you have developed both of these characters.
Elladan seemed to aske forgivness from Elrohir and I wonder what needed forgiven. I also was curious as to why the ship ssemed to be taken off course and water tower over them and what Elladan said to cause it to stop.
Keep up the great work...Absolutely love this...

OK wow. You sure didn't pull any punches with the opening scene. I can't imagine any bigger shock than waking in Paradise with your beautiful wife at your side with the knowledge that your daughter is dead. All the difficult farewells and painful partings and sea crossings and hundred-year-waits couldn't prepare a parent for that.
So thank goodness for comic relief!Glorfindel. I was laughing my tail off at him, half-worried he'd take the wheel and they'd end up on Gilligan's Island or something. Wonderful. Now, Elrohir was another matter and you had me really worried about him for a while, but I was glad to find that what he was worried about was something anybody who knows Celebrian (and we do, we do!) would know was silly. Understandable, I would have felt the same way. You didn't want the reunion to be like this, you're reminded of why there's a necessity to have one in the first place, but you know, we all need to just hug now. OK? Everybody hug. Yay.
Author's reply
Glorfindel decided he needed to live up to Tolkien's description of him. Though, I don't know if he'll annoy Osse and Ulmo again any time soon.

I was really worried that Elladan wasn't going to sail, and then that he wasn't going to be able to get in! I don't even know where else to comment, everything was so vivid. Glorfindel finding Turgon was particularly poignant, though I was glad to see him back bickering with Erestor. ... and a baby?!?!?! Oh my.

That was such a bittersweet chapter. First of all there was Elrond and Celebrian's sorrow with the passing of Arwen. I'm glad they didn't have too long to wait before Elladan and Elrohir arrived after that. All the reunions brought a lump to my throat. I especially liked Celeborn's reunion with Celebrian. I'd been so focussed on the twins' reunion with their mother that I'd completely forgotten that Celeborn must have been missing his daughter terribly. I'm glad you put that in.
There are still some unanswered questions - I still want to know what happened between Elladan and Elrohir before they boarded the ship. And what did Elladan do to enable them to get through to Tol Eressea? I'm sure you'll reveal the answers in your own good time.
And finally a new daughter for Elrond and Celebrian - how wonderful! A much better idea than waiting for the twins to give them grandchildren :)
Author's reply
The scene with E&C making babies was written near the start of HLIII, lOL. I needed to see them happy again before I could even write the story. But it didn't fit in that story. It wasn't until Elladan looked at his baby sister that I knew she was indeed meant to be there and not simply fanciful thinking on my part. :D

The twins continue to be intriguing, tuned in to one another and shutting everyone else out. I'm so glad for their parents, though. The loss of Arwen must have been painful. And those words are inadequate. As a parent, I can't imagine anything worse. But they can still feel joy in the arrival of their sons and the creation of new life.
Still, it's Glorfindel who was most surprising to me in this chapter. He was "full of joy" on the boat. That made me laugh. And I hadn't thought about his difficult choice of houses.
This was a fun read, even the third time. :-)

· Chapter 1: The Passing of the Evenstar
'He could see the thousands of eyes glistening with tears as they watched the only Queen they had known ride away with dignity and grace, and a grief so profound it pained all those who had dared to look upon her.'
'But his eyes had beseeched his great-grandfather and uncles, and he had relinquished her to their final care.' Oh! I love this... poor Eldarion!
'let none delay her with comfort' ... 'the gates to Caras Galadhon were open and in disrepair' ... 'The sea longing rages within him' ... 'I wish the Three had never been made!' ... 'He reminds me of Elros before he made his… choice.”
Elrohir means to intervene,” said Celeborn dully.'
And this paragraph was the final straw that broke my ill-made wall and brought me to tears...
'Celeborn felt rather than heard the small cry from Elladan as he went to his brother. “She will be cold,” Elrohir choked out as Elladan wrapped his arms around him. His heart nearly broke as Elrohir shook; grief, sorrow, frustration and despair radiating from him in waves so intense that Celeborn felt his mind flooded. “She will not have enough to eat soon.” '
Glorfindel kissed her brow. “Estel is waiting.”
I could not post a review besides just pasting the words that moved me to tears... An incredible tale so far. Just breaks my heart and I am not an 'Elf-lover' so to speak.
Well - title is definitely NOT what I would have guessed of the tale that it belongs to. I am hoping that it foreshadows the last chapter of this magnificent tale.
I see Radbooks has already nominated this for the MEFA's - I've put it on my wish list to review!
Author's reply
Thanks, Agape. I am pleased the story moved you. For the peredhil, it seems there are no perfectly happy endings. But then, one of the things I moved loved about Tolkien was that everyone didn't live happily ever after as the fairy tales so often end. They may find happiness, but it takes time and may not look like they once thought happiness would. But then, that is probably true for all of our lives.
Thanks for reading.

Wow! Good to have you back!
This story is so full of sentiment! It is painful to try and stand in the elves' shoes while they try to understand and support one of them going through such ordeal and not kowing what it really was for her to fight her own nature...! Glorfindel was right to send them away, or the wait would have killed the three of them, but it also cost him his strenght...
Arwen's pain and suffering made me thing of FIrod's words to Adreth, something like elves kew that such uions between mortal and inmortal could oly brig great pain, ad so they shied of them out of wisdom, or something like that... And ELrond did kow, did't he? SO it as anoter part of the sacrifice, so that the three lines were united, and it seems to me that Luthien's fate and idril, must have been somehow easier than Arwenn's.
I had to look twice to make sure that both had taken ship, you know... :-)
Author's reply
I can't imagine what it would be for someone over 3000 years old to have to make that choice and go. She did need time and space to do it, but oh, the pain of those who had to watch! Finrod's words to Andreth were wise - there is only pain in such unions. Elves and Men are both children of Iluvatar, but they are not made for each other.
Thanks for reading :>)

· Chapter 1: The Passing of the Evenstar
Elrond's family is so bound up in the fate of ME, and have paid such a high price along the way, that Arwen's lot seemed to me to be the final payment (or so I hoped) to Middle Earth - of course that is a mortal view, as the elves would continue to feel that separation. I had always imagined (because I'm happier that way) that the Twins would be together (and sail), as a sort of sign of gratitude to Elrond from beyond, a gift for losing Elros and as a completion of the circle, so although I'm delighted Elladan and Elrohir are both on the ship, I'm worried/intrigued at what may follow.
Arwen's last journey was heart-breaking, and Elrond and Celebrian must have felt her passing and grieved anew, so I wonder what they are feeling/thinking of the twins at this point. The delay she made always seemed "right" to me, she had lost (hopefully not forever) Aragorn, represented a Middle Earth without an obvious continued eleven presence, and mourning the loss of her family (for the last, although probably not the first, time) and going to an unknown destination.
I'll stop now (it is nearly 0130).
Thank you, looking forward to the next chapter!

Just beautiful, Nilmandra, and terribly sad. Losing Aragorn was hard enough, but for Gondor and Arwen's family to witness her grief, then stand aside as she left, must have been almost too much to bear. Celeborn, Glorfindel, and her brothers had the hardest job. It was like sitting watch at a love one's deathbed. I felt their despair and the hollowness of the finality with them. Each reacted in their own way.
For a few minutes there I wondered if Elladan would decide to stay. I reread the last few lines several time to reassure myself I had read correctly. I felt relieved, but I also felt bad for both twins. The struggle doesn't appear to be over, but together and with the help of friends and relatives, there's hope they'll find peace.
Absolutely wonderful chapter. I look forward to more...though I don't know whether to be happy you made me cry or be mad at you that you ate my heart out first thing this morning.

I already reviewed this on fanfiction.net but I had to tell you again how much I love this story. I always pictured Elladan and Elrohir staying with Arwen to the end. How torn they must be...to lose both their sister and their brother to mortality. What a horrible decision lies before them; I'm sure they never ever wanted to cause their parents pain and yet how could they not follow their hearts? And to leave each other if they make different choices...heartbreaking is the only word to describe it. I take some comfort from the title of your story. I truly hope all involved DO live happily ever after.
Author's reply
It struck me as I considered the dual natures of the peredhil that restlessness and discontent was their fate. A part of them is tied to the earth - to their people and the land - and another part of them is always seeking beyond the circles of the world. What a fate! And to have to choose? It is one thing to choose between options where one seems wholly better than the other, but what if both choices seem good?

I'm glad that Glorfindel and Celeborn were there, not just for Arwen, but also for the twins.
