Awww - you decided to expand the story! That's wonderful! There are decidedly not enough Boromir stories in the world! I liked it how everyone heard the Horn of Gondor at the beginning, although most of them didn't know what to make of it. And Boromir meeting the Rangers was great. So, he didn't recognize Adunaic other than the language of Umbar? Interesting...

Author's reply

Yes, I was finally moved to expand it. And you can thank Raksha for these, considering the next story in this series was written particularly for her, and I found it demanded to be introduced by these. And I've wanted to expand on that drabble for some time. No, I doubt Boromir learned to speak Adunaic, although he undoubtedly recognized the speech of Umbar. And I like to think he would see the similarities between these Men and those who served under his brother. Thanks!

Ohh, I like where this is going. What a long, frustrating, difficult journey for Boromir. And I often wonder what he thought about walking all the way home!

Author's reply

Learning he would again walk home must have felt terribly like deja vu! Am glad you like it, Shirebound.

Oh my! What a great start! I love Boromir's POV in this! If I'm not mistaken, this is the first time you've written very much of his POV--I like the way you show his mind working: figuring out some things, puzzling over others, and missing some things altogether (such as the idea that Rivendell=Imladris).

Author's reply

No, I've never written much about Boromir. But Raksha's birthday request, which will be the next story in this series, led to these two chapters, as I felt they needed to be posted first to lead into that one. Each can stand on its own, I think; but the whole may eventually be a full story in its own right. But Boromir is learning.

lwarren · 27 October 2008 · Chapter 1: The Arrival

He had one hard time finally getting to Imladris, didn't he? This story does an excellent job of detailing the trials he faced on the way to find Elrond. Well done, Larner! I'm loving this (and Boromir is not one of my favorite characters - you make him very appealing in his search for answers). linda

Author's reply

Oh, I agree, Linda--he had little if any idea where he was going or what to expect once he got there, and must deal with the idea that the world is not everywhere as it is in Gondor. This is a learning experience for him. Boromir's never been my favorite character, either, although I always pitied him. Sean Bean, however, did a good deal to make him come alive and be more sympathetic, particularly considering those passages in the book that show his competency and his compassion for the others. And Baylor's writing also made me like him better (I've alwsys loved her "Care and Feeding of Hobbits).

I loved Boromir's confusion as to why there would be Nazgul in the north since there weren't any armies there! So characteristic of him!

Author's reply

I suspect Boromir, as the consummate warrior and Captain-General of Gondor's forces, would always think in terms of armies; that there were other policies and prizes the Nazgul might be sent to pursue would probably escape him. And I felt he'd need to be aware that the Black Riders had passed him, were heading northward for reasons of their own even if he could not fathom those reasons.

lwarren · 27 October 2008 · Chapter 0: Prologue

Oh, I like the idea that the members of the Fellowship were fated somehow to be together. And Irmo warning Gandalf! Cool! I will enjoy seeing Boromir's perspective of how everything played out. (The board is set...the pieces are moving...) Yeah! linda

Author's reply

I have always loved Gandalf seeing the war against the Enemy as a great, dreadful, dangerous game of chess; that he would see this true from the start just seemed likely. And as I've rarely included Boromir in my stories, I thought I'd try him--although I admit these first two chapters were written to lead to the third, and you can blame Raksha for that! Heh!

harrowcat · 27 October 2008 · Chapter 1: The Arrival

A great expansion Larner. I especially like Boromir's meeting with the Rangers. Yet another view to fill in the grand story. You are making me think of 'A leaf by Niggle'.

Author's reply

I think all of us who dabble in Tolkien's world are our own part of "Leaf by Niggle." Excellent analogy. And I like to think that there was a reason why Boromir would recognize Aragorn as a Ranger, and would come in many ways to compare him to both his father and his brother. Since I wrote the drabble "Arrival" for AIG I've felt it was just too short to fully convey what I'd wished to tell. Reading it again, I was struck by how commonplace it sounded. He arrived, had to tell his mission to the Elves who blocked his path, and much of the tension I believed he should feel was lost due to the necessary brevity of the telling. This gave me a chance to describe so much that was missed in the first one, and to better express Boromir's frustration that once again, here in sight of his goal, he's being held up and possibly turned away. Thanks for the feedback.

Agape4Gondor · 27 October 2008 · Chapter 0: Prologue

Bravo! Awesome beginning - needless to say, I'll be looking forward to reading more of this. I absolutely adored the thought that the members of the Fellowship might, indeed, have heard the Horn's call. *shivers* Excellent beginning.

Author's reply

Oh, yes, the board is being made ready now, and the call for the game to begin given, sounded by Boromir himself! Those who will be part of the Fellowship are being warned, even if only Gandalf so far understands of what.

harrowcat · 27 October 2008 · Chapter 0: Prologue

I do love the way that you take a small snippit from the Master and run with it in all sorts of logical directions. Of course Boromir would have sounded his horn before setting out from Minas Tirith. Dying to hear more of this.

Author's reply

Oh, thank you! Good to hear from you here! Hope all is going calmly with your folks. This all started with Raksha's birthday request.... Anyway, yes, Boromir said he'd sound his horn ere he started out, so I figured he must have done so then. And what might the others have been doing at that moment? Had to speculate....

eiluj · 26 October 2008 · Chapter 0: Prologue

Great idea for opening the story!

Author's reply

Thanks so, ieluj! I hope this series finds favor!
