Andrea · 1 April 2009 · Chapter 2: Beyond the Bounds

Why didn't he listen to the old woman? She's the one who knows about the barrows, not Hildifons! And I think you are right when you say that Hildifons was more innocent and trustful than Frodo when he started his journey. The fact that the first member of the race of men he met was a nice old gammer didn't alter his attitude in the least. I'm really curious to find out what will happen at the Barrow Downs! On the other hand I fear for the poor hobbit.

Author's reply

Well, he was impatient to be on his way--and he probably thought he was still too near the Shire for comfort. We shall soon see what will happen!

FantasyFan · 1 April 2009 · Chapter 2: Beyond the Bounds

Ooo, what a great last line for this chapter! I'm glad Hildefons' first encounter with big people was a pleasant one. Of course, he should have been wary: of evil men, of the barrows, of the many dangers of the wild; but then, this is long before four adventurous hobbits learned so much about the dangers of the world. He's as innocent as Frodo was when he first set out.

Author's reply

In some ways, he's even *more* innocent! Frodo, at least, had Bilbo's experiences drilled into him, so he was not *totally* clueless! Of course, his adventure was much darker, but at least he knew that there *were* dangers!

Elflingimp · 1 April 2009 · Chapter 2: Beyond the Bounds

Ack! How could you leave it there??? I shudder to think of what may happen to him, I like all your descriptions of his travel and that vegetable soup sounds sooo.. yummy. Whaa! I wanna go there! anyway no more of that, I am realy enjoying your story. Hugs The Imp

Author's reply

Because I'm an evol author who likes cliffies? I had fun describing his journey--I was looking at the map from the Shire to Bree, and all the scary stuff was to the south of the road, but it didn't really show anything of the other side! And I love to describe food--after all, a hobbit is a hobbit! I'm glad you are still enjoying it!

shirebound · 1 April 2009 · Chapter 2: Beyond the Bounds

Oh my, what will happen at the 'shuddersome' barrows? *frets*

Author's reply

You won't have to fret too long, I hope!

Antane · 31 March 2009 · Chapter 1: Unlucky at Love

I am sorry for his pain, but he is right, all of this as it happened was meant to be and I am intrigued with his adventures soon to begin. I love his sisters reactions to his being rejected. I would love to sleep under the stars. That sounds neat. I hope he is able to reach his family though at some point because they would be worried. I love also the not knowing what it was right or not that his brother didn't pursue the idea of going with him. That is how life is. We make choices and don't know all the consequences. Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author's reply

We make choices and don't know all the consequences. Indeed, and that's really going to be a factor in Hildifons' adventures. He's young and impulsive and a Took.

GamgeeFest · 31 March 2009 · Chapter 1: Unlucky at Love

Poor Hildifons! To be jilted so, and worse, everyone else saw it coming except him. He shouldn't have bereaved himself over such an unworthy lass, but it's easier said than done. It was a rather hasty decision to leave, one it seems he regrets now. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Author's reply

It was the "everyone else saw it coming except him" part, I think, that hurt him most. Gardenia was very unworthy of him, but he wouldn't be the first lad to have that happen to him. He *was* impulsive. But then he was also a Took!

GamgeeFest · 31 March 2009 · Chapter 0: Prologue: An Unexpected Discovery

Very interesting! No wonder the elves were so prepared for Bilbo's retirement! But Hildifons had decided to quit the Shire, and didn't want anyone told about him? Bilbo might find that journal more difficult to read than he is expecting.

Author's reply

Yes, I think you are quite right about it being difficult for Bilbo to read.

Andrea · 30 March 2009 · Chapter 1: Unlucky at Love

Poor Hildifons! It's hard to be jilted like that. On the other hand, a Sackville? It wouldn't have worked out! And now I know why Frodo, Merry and Pippin were always so fond of playing pranks. It lies in the family, on the Took side, of course ;-) I wonder what Hildifons will find in Bree! A “rag-tag conjurer”? Sooner or later they will meet again.

Author's reply

Ah, no. But breaking up is hard to do. I think pranks must have run among several hobbit families--apparently JRRT was fond of a good practical joke himself from time to time! I am quite sure they will meet again.

Larner · 30 March 2009 · Chapter 1: Unlucky at Love

Sackvilles were involved? Ah, the poor lad--he did not choose well at all, did he? And love Belladonna's reaction to the news--glad not to have to pretend to be nice to Gardenia any more! Now, how on earth did our Hildifons become "Trotter"?

Author's reply

Yes, and though it does not enter into this story, Gardenia was aunt to Camelia. LOL! Hildifons younger siblings were certainly indignant on his behalf! You will find out eventually. *grin*

Elflingimp · 30 March 2009 · Chapter 1: Unlucky at Love

This is a very interesting story, I don't usually read alot of Hobbit stories but I have gooten pulled in by this one. Kudos to you! Hugs The Imp

Author's reply

Why thank you! I hope you continue to enjoy Trotter's adventures!

shirebound · 30 March 2009 · Chapter 1: Unlucky at Love

Poor broken-hearted one! And so his Adventure begins.

Author's reply

Yes, he was quite devestated to be jilted like that! But it sent him off into Adventure, as you say!

Raksha The Demon · 29 March 2009 · Chapter 0: Prologue: An Unexpected Discovery

How wonderful that Trotter is going to have his own fanfiction story; and what a great way to start it! Of course he had to be a Took.

Author's reply

Of course he did! I have to say, the Trotter of JRRT's early drafts was my inspiration, but his origins are entirely mine, and you will notice he lives in quite a different timeline. But I could not get away from the idea of Trotter, the hobbit Ranger.

Antane · 29 March 2009 · Chapter 0: Prologue: An Unexpected Discovery

This should be interesting and I look forward to more! Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author's reply

Well, I hope to keep the story moving! I have an eight-week deadline!

Rhapsody · 29 March 2009 · Chapter 0: Prologue: An Unexpected Discovery

Oh dear Bilbo, I just love him in this prologue! His reaction to finding such an important tone, marching down the halls to Elrond and yet still so much that curious hobbit with his thirst for knowlegde! I am so curious what happened to Hildifons!

Author's reply

He is still very curious about things--you and Bilbo will find out together all about his uncle!

Larner · 29 March 2009 · Chapter 0: Prologue: An Unexpected Discovery

Ah--at last the story of Hildifons! Hooray!

Author's reply

*grin* Yes. At last. This story has been brewing in my head since 2007.

Andrea · 29 March 2009 · Chapter 0: Prologue: An Unexpected Discovery

“Oh my stars!” he exclaimed. That was my reaction, too ;-) Hildifons Took, the brother of Isengar, who went away never to return. Their generation was even more adventurous than others, it seems. I'm looking forward to finding out why Hildifons never came back, which is rather untypical for hobbits who love their homeland dearly!

Author's reply

Yes, it was, wasn't it? Gerontius, I suspect, and his friendship with a certain wizard, might have had a hand in that. It is, and you will discover the reasons, along with Bilbo!
